Kerala Trip Cost: The Complete 2026 Budget, Flights Included
Airfare or train fare, hotel nights in Munnar and Thekkady, one night on a backwater houseboat, the car and driver, park tickets, meals and tips – counted in rupees for couples, families and friends.
The short answer: a Kerala trip cost for two people is roughly ₹56,000 to ₹88,000 for a careful 5-night trip, ₹87,000 to ₹1.43 lakh for the comfortable version most couples choose, and ₹1.6 lakh upward for valley-view resorts, a luxury houseboat and full-service flights. Those totals cover return economy flights from a major Indian city, four hotel nights with breakfast, one houseboat night with all meals, a private car and driver for six days, park and show tickets, lunches and dinners, and tips. Shopping for spices, tea and saris is left out.
Most prices you see online for Kerala are land-only and per person on twin sharing, often for the cheapest week of the monsoon. That is useful for comparing packages – our Kerala tour packages show live land prices – but it does not tell you what the holiday costs your household from the day you book the tickets to the day you are home. This guide adds every line, shows how the total changes with trip length and group size, and flags the places where Kerala budgets usually go wrong. Rates are as of November 2026; houseboat and hotel tariffs move with the season, and we check them again for your dates.

Kerala trip cost at a glance (5 nights, two people)
Route used for all the figures below: Kochi in, Munnar two nights, Thekkady one night, an Alleppey houseboat one night, Kochi one night, Kochi out. Dates are outside 20 December – 5 January and Diwali week, with flights booked four to six weeks ahead.
| Style | What the money buys | Total for two | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Low-cost flights, clean 3-star hotels in town, a deluxe-class houseboat, AC sedan with driver, main parks and one cultural show, local restaurants | ₹56,000 – 88,000 | ₹28,000 – 44,000 |
| Mid-range | Better flight timings, 4-star resorts with a view in Munnar and Thekkady, a premium houseboat with a private upper deck, sedan or small SUV, a jeep ride, an Ayurveda massage | ₹87,000 – 1,43,000 | ₹43,500 – 71,500 |
| Premium | Full-service airline, tea-estate or jungle luxury resorts, a glass-fronted luxury houseboat, Innova Crysta, private guides and resort dining | ₹1,60,000 – 2,93,000 | ₹80,000 – 1,46,500 |
The two lines that decide where you land are the hotel class (₹10,000 or ₹1,00,000 for four nights) and the houseboat (₹7,000 or ₹40,000 for one night). The car, tickets and food together rarely differ by more than ₹40,000 between a modest and a lavish trip.
Getting to Kerala: flight and train costs by city
Kerala has four airports. Kochi (COK), at Nedumbassery north of the city, is the one almost every first trip uses: about an hour to Fort Kochi, 1½ hours to Alleppey and 3½ – 4 hours to Munnar. Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) suits Kovalam and Varkala, while Kozhikode (CCJ) and Kannur (CNN) serve Wayanad and the north. Flying into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram usually costs about the same as a return to Kochi and saves a long drive back.
| From | Usual way in (November 2026) | Return economy per person |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Non-stop to Kochi, about 3¼ hours | ₹10,000 – 18,000 |
| Mumbai | Non-stop to Kochi, about 2 hours | ₹7,000 – 13,000 |
| Bengaluru | Short non-stop to Kochi, or the overnight train to Ernakulam | ₹4,500 – 9,000 |
| Chennai | Non-stop to Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, or an overnight train | ₹5,000 – 10,000 |
| Hyderabad | Non-stop to Kochi, under 2 hours | ₹7,000 – 13,000 |
| Kolkata | Non-stop to Kochi on most days, otherwise one stop | ₹11,000 – 19,000 |
| Ahmedabad | Non-stop to Kochi, about 2¾ hours | ₹9,000 – 16,000 |
| Pune | Non-stop to Kochi, mostly late-night departures | ₹8,000 – 14,000 |
Peak weeks – Diwali, 20 December to 5 January, and the April–May school break – can add 40 – 80% to these fares. Trains are a real option from Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai: a 3AC berth to Ernakulam costs roughly ₹1,000 – 2,500 one way depending on distance, against a journey of 11 hours from Bengaluru or about a day from Mumbai. From Delhi or Kolkata the train takes nearly two days, which costs more in lost holiday than it saves. Each departure city has its own detailed page: Kerala from Delhi, from Mumbai, from Bengaluru, from Chennai, from Hyderabad, from Kolkata and from Pune.
Hotel costs in Munnar, Thekkady, Kochi and the beaches
Per room per night for two adults with breakfast, outside the Christmas fortnight, tax included. Since 22 September 2025, rooms with a tariff up to ₹7,500 a night carry 5% GST; costlier rooms carry 18%, so check whether a quote says "plus taxes".
| Tier | Munnar | Thekkady | Kochi | Kumarakom / Marari | Kovalam / Varkala |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget (3-star, town location) | ₹2,500 – 4,000 | ₹2,500 – 3,800 | ₹2,500 – 4,000 | ₹3,500 – 5,000 | ₹2,500 – 4,500 |
| Mid-range (4-star, valley or garden view) | ₹5,000 – 9,000 | ₹5,000 – 8,500 | ₹5,000 – 8,000 | ₹7,000 – 12,000 | ₹5,500 – 10,000 |
| Premium (5-star, tea-estate or lake resort) | ₹12,000 – 25,000+ | ₹11,000 – 22,000 | ₹10,000 – 20,000 | ₹15,000 – 35,000+ | ₹12,000 – 28,000 |
- Munnar location matters more than stars. A cheap hotel in Munnar town looks onto a busy market; a mid-range resort 10 – 20 km out in Chithirapuram, Pallivasal or Anachal gets the tea-hill view people travel for. That one change is usually worth ₹2,000 – 3,000 a night.
- Thekkady: stay within walking distance of the Kumily–Periyar road if you plan the early boat ride; resorts far out save money but add morning driving.
- Kochi is the cheapest place to sleep: if your flight lands late, a night near the airport or in Fort Kochi costs less than reaching Munnar after dark.
Houseboat cost: what each class gets you
The houseboat is the one Kerala experience that has no cheap substitute, and its price range is wide. An overnight cruise usually boards around noon, cruises until about 5:30 pm, anchors for the night and returns by about 9 am. Lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast are cooked on board and included. Rates below are per boat per night, as of November 2026, for Alleppey (Alappuzha).
| Class | What it usually means | 1 bedroom | 2 bedrooms | 3 bedrooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | Wooden boat, AC in the bedroom (often only at night), simple deck | ₹7,000 – 10,000 | ₹11,000 – 15,000 | ₹15,000 – 19,000 |
| Premium | Newer boat, AC through the day, upper deck or larger lounge | ₹12,000 – 18,000 | ₹15,000 – 22,000 | ₹19,000 – 26,000 |
| Luxury | Glass-walled lounge, bathtub or jacuzzi, more crew | ₹20,000 – 40,000 | ₹30,000 – 50,000 | ₹40,000 – 60,000 |
- Kumarakom costs more. There are far fewer boats on Vembanad lake than in Alleppey, and equivalent boats usually run 15 – 25% dearer.
- Christmas–New Year is the expensive fortnight. Between about 20 December and 5 January, owners often charge up to double the normal rate, and the best boats are booked months ahead. Weekends and Onam week also carry a surcharge.
- Day cruise instead of a night: about ₹5,000 – 9,000 per boat for roughly 11 am to 5 pm with lunch. A shikara (small canopy boat) through the narrow canals costs about ₹500 – 1,000 an hour and reaches villages the big boats cannot.
- Sharing houseboats, where you take one cabin on a boat with other guests, exist at lower prices, but the boat is not private. We book only private boats.
- Veg and Jain meals on board are possible when the boat is told in advance; the cook works from a small kitchen, so a Jain menu is simple – dal, rice, vegetables without root vegetables, chapati.
Car, driver and local transport costs
Kerala's hill roads are narrow and slow, and the main sights are spread across three districts, so a private car with a driver is the practical way to travel. Prices are for the whole trip, including fuel, the driver's allowance, tolls and parking, from a Kochi pick-up to a Kochi drop.
| Vehicle | Seats comfortably | 5 nights / 6 days | 7 nights / 8 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC sedan (Dzire, Etios class) | 2 – 3 adults with luggage | ₹15,000 – 20,000 | ₹20,000 – 26,000 |
| Ertiga or similar | 4 adults | ₹17,000 – 23,000 | ₹22,000 – 30,000 |
| Innova Crysta | 4 – 6 adults | ₹24,000 – 32,000 | ₹31,000 – 42,000 |
| Tempo Traveller (12 seats) | 7 – 11 people | ₹30,000 – 40,000 | ₹39,000 – 52,000 |
A loop that ends at Thiruvananthapuram instead of Kochi adds a one-way positioning charge of about ₹2,500 – 4,500. Inside Munnar, the jeep to Kolukkumalai or a remote viewpoint is a separate cost of about ₹2,500 – 3,500 per jeep. In Kochi, ferries between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi cost a few rupees and the Water Metro is cheap too; app cabs and autorickshaws work well in the city. Self-drive cars are available in Kochi but few visitors want to drive the Munnar ghats themselves.
Park tickets, shows and activities
Approximate adult prices for Indian visitors, as of November 2026. Forest Department fees change without much notice; we confirm them before you travel.
| Ticket or activity | Where | About per person |
|---|---|---|
| Eravikulam National Park, with the park bus to the tahr area | Munnar | ₹200 – 300 (closed roughly February to March for Nilgiri tahr calving) |
| Tea museum or estate factory visit | Munnar | ₹150 – 250 |
| Periyar lake boat ride, 1½ hours | Thekkady | About ₹450 on the KTDC portal, plus park entry and shuttle |
| Spice plantation walk with guide | Thekkady | ₹150 – 400 |
| Kalaripayattu or Kathakali evening show | Thekkady, Munnar, Fort Kochi | ₹300 – 600 |
| Bamboo rafting or a guided forest trek (Forest Department) | Periyar | ₹1,500 – 3,000 (limited seats) |
| Ayurvedic full-body massage, 60 minutes | Anywhere | ₹1,500 (local centre) – 4,500 (resort spa) |
| Jatayu Earth's Centre with cable car | Near Varkala | ₹500 – 1,000 |
For a couple, the standard set – Eravikulam, a tea museum, the Periyar boat, a spice walk and one show – comes to about ₹3,000 – 5,000. Add a jeep ride, one massage each and a Kathakali performance in Fort Kochi and it becomes ₹7,000 – 12,000. Periyar boat tickets sell out early in season, so book the first departure the moment your dates are fixed.
Food costs, and what vegetarians should know
- Local restaurants: a Kerala meals plate (rice, sambar, two or three vegetables, rasam, curd) costs about ₹100 – 200; appam with vegetable stew or a masala dosa ₹80 – 180.
- North Indian and multi-cuisine restaurants in Munnar, Kumily and Kochi: about ₹350 – 700 per person for a full meal.
- Resort restaurants: ₹900 – 2,000 per person per meal plus tax.
- Sadya, the vegetarian banana-leaf feast, is served daily at some restaurants and widely during Onam, at about ₹250 – 500.
- Jain food: hotels in Munnar, Thekkady and Kochi will cook without onion, garlic and root vegetables when told in advance; smaller restaurants on the road usually cannot. We confirm it in writing with every hotel and the houseboat.
Daily food budget for two, breakfast already included at hotels: about ₹1,200 – 2,000 eating at local and North Indian restaurants, ₹2,500 – 4,000 mixing restaurants with one resort dinner, and ₹5,000 – 9,000 eating mostly at resorts. The houseboat day costs nothing extra for food unless you order seafood such as karimeen or prawns, which the crew buys and charges separately.
Line-by-line budget: Kerala for a couple, 5 nights
All figures are for two people together, same route as the at-a-glance table.
| Cost line | Budget | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return flights for two | ₹14,000 – 26,000 | ₹18,000 – 32,000 | ₹26,000 – 45,000 |
| Hotels, 4 nights with breakfast | ₹10,000 – 16,000 | ₹20,000 – 36,000 | ₹48,000 – 1,00,000 |
| Houseboat, 1 night with all meals | ₹7,000 – 10,000 | ₹12,000 – 18,000 | ₹22,000 – 40,000 |
| Car and driver, 6 days | ₹15,000 – 20,000 | ₹17,000 – 24,000 | ₹24,000 – 32,000 |
| Tickets and activities | ₹3,000 – 5,000 | ₹7,000 – 12,000 | ₹15,000 – 30,000 |
| Lunches and dinners (4 days) | ₹5,000 – 8,000 | ₹10,000 – 16,000 | ₹20,000 – 36,000 |
| Tips, insurance, small extras | ₹2,000 – 3,000 | ₹3,000 – 5,000 | ₹5,000 – 10,000 |
| Total for two | ₹56,000 – 88,000 | ₹87,000 – 1,43,000 | ₹1,60,000 – 2,93,000 |
Tips on a Kerala trip are modest but expected: about ₹300 – 500 a day for the driver and ₹500 – 1,000 for the houseboat crew as a whole are common.
How the total changes from 4 to 7 nights
A 4-night trip drops Kochi or shortens Munnar; the 6th and 7th nights usually add Kumarakom or a beach – Marari, Kovalam or Varkala – with the flight home from Thiruvananthapuram.
| Trip length (two people, flights included) | Budget | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 nights / 5 days | ₹49,000 – 77,000 | ₹75,000 – 1,25,000 | ₹1,35,000 – 2,45,000 |
| 5 nights / 6 days | ₹56,000 – 88,000 | ₹87,000 – 1,43,000 | ₹1,60,000 – 2,93,000 |
| 6 nights / 7 days | ₹62,000 – 98,000 | ₹98,000 – 1,62,000 | ₹1,85,000 – 3,40,000 |
| 7 nights / 8 days | ₹68,000 – 1,08,000 | ₹1,10,000 – 1,82,000 | ₹2,10,000 – 3,90,000 |
Each extra night costs about ₹6,000 – 10,000 for a budget couple, ₹11,000 – 19,000 mid-range and ₹25,000 – 47,000 at the top end, because the airfare does not change. Seven nights is where Kerala stops feeling rushed: drives of three to four hours between stops are easier to absorb when you are not checking out every morning.
Family and friends: what a bigger group pays
Family of four (two adults, two children under 12), 6 nights, mid-range
| Cost line | For the family |
|---|---|
| Return flights, four tickets | ₹36,000 – 64,000 |
| Hotels, 5 nights in a family room or two connecting rooms | ₹35,000 – 60,000 |
| Two-bedroom premium houseboat, 1 night | ₹15,000 – 22,000 |
| Ertiga or Innova Crysta, 7 days | ₹22,000 – 32,000 |
| Tickets and activities (children pay less at most parks) | ₹8,000 – 14,000 |
| Lunches and dinners | ₹16,000 – 26,000 |
| Tips and extras | ₹4,000 – 6,000 |
| Total | ₹1,36,000 – 2,24,000 |
Families save most by asking for a family room (one large room with an extra bed) rather than two rooms – many Munnar resorts have them – and by flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday during school holidays.
Six friends, 5 nights, budget
| Cost line | For the group | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights, six tickets | ₹42,000 – 78,000 | ₹7,000 – 13,000 |
| Three rooms, 4 nights | ₹30,000 – 48,000 | ₹5,000 – 8,000 |
| Three-bedroom deluxe houseboat | ₹15,000 – 19,000 | ₹2,500 – 3,200 |
| Tempo Traveller, 6 days | ₹30,000 – 40,000 | ₹5,000 – 6,700 |
| Tickets, jeep ride, activities | ₹9,000 – 15,000 | ₹1,500 – 2,500 |
| Food | ₹15,000 – 24,000 | ₹2,500 – 4,000 |
| Extras | ₹4,000 – 6,000 | ₹700 – 1,000 |
| Total | ₹1,45,000 – 2,30,000 | ₹24,000 – 38,500 |
A group of six pays less per head than a couple on the same plan, mainly because the vehicle and houseboat are shared. Five friends fit an Innova Crysta with soft bags, which saves about ₹6,000 – 8,000 over a Tempo Traveller. Groups still travel privately, on their own dates; nothing here is a shared tour.
Season and dates: the hidden multiplier
| Period | Effect on the budget | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| June – August | Lowest hotel and houseboat rates of the year, often 25 – 40% below winter | Heavy rain, misty Munnar, traditional Ayurveda season; some treks closed |
| September – mid-December | Normal rates; Onam week and Diwali week higher | Green after the monsoon, waterfalls full |
| 20 December – 5 January | The most expensive fortnight: hotels and houseboats up to double, fares at their highest | Resorts may add a compulsory gala dinner on 24 or 31 December |
| January – March | Normal to slightly high | Dry and pleasant; Eravikulam usually closed for part of this period |
| April – May | Flights up for the school break; hill hotels busy, plains quieter | Hot on the coast, comfortable in Munnar |
If your dates are flexible, moving a trip from Christmas week to the second half of January commonly saves a couple ₹25,000 – 50,000 with no change in hotels. For families tied to school holidays, Diwali and May are when to book three months ahead. For more on choosing dates, see our guides to family holiday destinations in India and honeymoon destinations in India.
Ten ways to bring a Kerala trip cost down
- Spend on one view, save on the rest. A valley-view resort in Munnar matters more than a fancy room in Kochi, where you mostly sleep.
- Choose the houseboat class deliberately. Deluxe is fine for one night if the AC hours suit you; luxury is for honeymoons and celebrations.
- Book Alleppey, not Kumarakom, for the houseboat if price matters, and use Kumarakom only for a lake resort night.
- Skip the beach on a first trip shorter than six nights. Hills, spice country and backwaters already fill five nights.
- Pick the car to fit the group. Two people do not need an Innova; five people in a sedan is uncomfortable on ghat roads.
- Fly into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram on longer trips to avoid paying for a day of driving back.
- Use the train from Bengaluru, Chennai or Mumbai if you have a day to spare; it can halve the travel cost for a family.
- Eat Kerala meals at lunch. A ₹150 plate at noon and a proper dinner keeps the food budget comfortable.
- Book the Periyar boat and Eravikulam online early so you are not tempted into a pricier private alternative.
- Ask for a quote with named hotels and the houseboat class written down, so that two "5-night Kerala" offers can actually be compared.
How Vibrant Holidays prices a Kerala trip
- Every line visible: flights or train, named hotels with the room type, the houseboat class and number of bedrooms, the car model, and which tickets are included.
- Private and customised: your own dates, your own car and driver throughout, and the pace you choose – shorter drives for senior citizens, a slower day after the houseboat.
- Pure-veg and Jain meals arranged with hotels and the houseboat and confirmed in writing; we tell you plainly where roadside options are limited.
- 11 years of planning from our office on C G Road, Ahmedabad, with travellers booking from any city on WhatsApp or phone, PDF vouchers and 24×7 support during the trip. IATA-accredited; member of TAAI, TAFI, ADTOI and IATO; recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
- Two options when the budget is tight – for example a premium houseboat with 3-star hotels, or 4-star hotels with a deluxe boat – so you decide where the money goes.

How much does a Kerala trip cost for a couple?
For 5 nights, two people usually spend about ₹56,000 to 88,000 on a budget trip, ₹87,000 to 1.43 lakh mid-range and ₹1.6 lakh or more with luxury resorts. These totals include return flights from a major city, hotels, one houseboat night with meals, a car and driver, park tickets, food and tips, but not shopping.
Is ₹50,000 enough for a Kerala trip for two?
It is possible for 4 nights if you live in Bengaluru or Chennai, travel by train or a cheap flight, stay in 3-star town hotels, take a deluxe houseboat and eat at local restaurants, outside peak weeks. From Delhi or Kolkata, or with a valley-view resort, plan for at least ₹70,000 to 90,000.
What is the houseboat price in Alleppey per night?
As of November 2026, a one-bedroom deluxe houseboat costs about ₹7,000 to 10,000 a night, premium about ₹12,000 to 18,000 and luxury ₹20,000 to 40,000, with lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast included. Kumarakom is about 15 to 25% dearer, and 20 December to 5 January can cost up to double.
How much does a Kerala trip cost per person?
With flights from a major Indian city, a 5-night trip costs about ₹28,000 to 44,000 per person in the budget style and ₹43,500 to 71,500 mid-range, on twin sharing. Groups of four to six pay less per head because the car and the houseboat are shared.
What is the cheapest time to visit Kerala?
June to August, the monsoon months, have the lowest hotel and houseboat rates, often 25 to 40% below winter, except during Onam. It rains heavily, but the hills are green and it is the classic season for Ayurveda. The most expensive period is 20 December to 5 January.
How much does a car with driver cost in Kerala?
For a typical 5-night trip starting and ending in Kochi, an AC sedan with driver costs about ₹15,000 to 20,000 including fuel, driver allowance, tolls and parking. An Innova Crysta costs about ₹24,000 to 32,000, and a 12-seat Tempo Traveller about ₹30,000 to 40,000.
What is the Eravikulam National Park ticket price?
As of November 2026, Indian adults pay roughly ₹200 to 300 including the Forest Department bus, which is the only way to reach the Nilgiri tahr area. The park usually closes for about six to eight weeks between February and March for the calving season, so check before planning a visit then.
How much is the Periyar boating ticket in Thekkady?
The 1½-hour Periyar lake boat ride is listed at about ₹450 per person on the KTDC booking portal as of November 2026, with park entry and the shuttle bus charged separately. The early-morning departure is the best for wildlife and sells out first in season.
Is it cheaper to go to Kerala by train?
From Bengaluru, Chennai or Mumbai, yes. A 3AC berth to Ernakulam costs roughly ₹1,000 to 2,500 one way, against ₹2,500 to 6,500 for a one-way flight. From Delhi or Kolkata the journey takes close to two days, so flying usually makes more sense once you count the holiday days lost.
Is a Kerala package cheaper than planning myself?
Not always. Agents often get better hotel and houseboat rates in peak season, and the car is vetted. In the monsoon, public hotel deals can be just as good. Compare quotes on the same hotel names, houseboat class and car model; those three lines explain most price differences.
How much should I budget for food in Kerala?
With breakfast included at hotels, two people spend about ₹1,200 to 2,000 a day at local and North Indian restaurants, or ₹5,000 to 9,000 eating at resorts. Houseboat meals are included. Pure-veg food is easy to find; Jain meals need advance notice to hotels.
