Best Places to Visit in May in India (2027 Guide)

May is the busiest holiday month of the year for Gujarati families. Here is where the weather is right, which mountain roads usually open in time, and how to avoid paying peak prices for a crowded week.

The best places to visit in May in India are the ones high enough to escape the heat. By May, Ahmedabad regularly touches 42–45°C, the Rajasthan desert and the Deccan plateau are worse, and even the coasts feel heavy with humidity. Up in the Himalaya the opposite is happening: the last snow is melting off the passes, the Border Roads Organisation is clearing the high roads one by one, and the Char Dham temples open their doors for the season. Down south, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar sit at 15–25°C while the plains below them bake.

May is also the month when Gujarat goes on holiday together. The Gujarat board academic calendar for 2026–27 gives schools a 35-day summer vacation from 3 May to 6 June 2027, so flights out of Ahmedabad, hill-station hotels and Char Dham helicopter seats all fill at the same time. This guide is written with that reality in mind: a verdict table with honest costs, the roads and temples that usually open during May (and the years they did not), the places to avoid, and a booking calendar so you are not paying last-minute prices for the most crowded week of the year. Dates in this guide are as of November 2026; rules change – we check before you book.

May at a glance: verdicts and costs per person

Costs below are per person on twin sharing for a private car, standard-to-deluxe hotels, breakfast (and dinner where meals are usually included, such as Kashmir and Char Dham) and sightseeing. Flights or trains are not included. May is peak season in every hill station, so these ranges are higher than the same trip in April or September; the upper end applies to the 15 May–5 June rush.

For a quick sense of airfare: return economy fares from Ahmedabad to Srinagar, Leh, Bagdogra or Port Blair in May are often ₹14,000–28,000 per person when booked eight to ten weeks ahead, and can double for the first weekend of the vacation if left late. We quote live fares; no fixed figure holds in May.

Which mountain roads and temples open in May (and how reliably)

Most May disappointments in the Himalaya come from a road or temple that opens a week or two later than the traveller assumed. These are the openings we track, with what actually happened recently. All are decided by the Border Roads Organisation, district administrations or temple committees each year, so treat them as patterns, not promises.

Road or siteWhat decides itRecent openingWhat it means for a May trip
Srinagar–Leh road over ZojilaBRO snow clearance, avalanche risk1 April in 2025; mid-April in 2026 (one-way convoys in places into May)Usually open by May, but a fresh snowfall can stop traffic for a day or two

Kedarnath and BadrinathDates fixed by the temple priests: Kedarnath on Mahashivratri at Ukhimath, Badrinath on Basant Panchami22 and 23 April in 2026The 2027 dates are not announced yet as of November 2026; they come out in February–March 2027
Hemkund SahibGurudwara trust and the Army clearing the trail23 May in 2026Very end of May at best; Valley of Flowers itself opens on 1 June

Rohtang permits are issued per vehicle online in limited daily numbers; in 2025 the limit was 1,200 vehicles a day and the pass was shut on Tuesdays for maintenance. We book the permit with the car, so you do not need to deal with it. For a Ladakh trip, the sensible May plan is to fly into Leh, rest for 36–48 hours, and drive out to Manali only if the highway is open on your date. Our Ladakh tour packages from Ahmedabad are built that way.

Kashmir in May: the best balance of weather and ease

If one destination had to carry the whole of May, it would be Kashmir. Srinagar is warm by day and cool at night, Gulmarg's meadow is green with snow still on Apharwat above it, Pahalgam's Aru and Betaab valleys have full rivers, and Sonamarg's Thajiwas glacier is reachable on foot or pony. Days are long – sunset is after 7.30 pm – so even with an unhurried breakfast you get a full day out.

  • How many nights: six works best: two on a Dal Lake houseboat or Srinagar hotel, one or two in Gulmarg, two in Pahalgam, with Sonamarg as a day trip.
  • For Gujarati families: Srinagar has several pure-veg restaurants and most hotels cook a simple Gujarati thali on request. Jain food without onion and garlic is possible with notice; we confirm it in writing with each hotel.
  • Seniors: skip the Phase 2 Gondola if anyone has breathing or heart issues; Phase 1 at Kongdori is enough for views and snow patches.
  • Crowd warning: Gondola tickets sell out daily in May; we book the online slot as soon as the hotel is confirmed.

See Kashmir tour packages from Ahmedabad for day-wise plans and live prices.

Ladakh and Spiti in May: early-season rules

Ladakh is worth going to in May only if you accept that it is early season. Leh, Sham valley, Nubra and Pangong are all reachable by road from Leh, and the light is clear, but nights at Pangong and Tso Moriri are still close to or below freezing and some camps open only in the last week of May. In return, you get emptier monasteries and more hotel choice than in June.

  • Acclimatisation is not optional. Leh is at about 3,500 m. Spend the first full day resting, and the second on short local sightseeing. Anyone over 60, or with blood pressure or heart conditions, should check with their doctor before booking.
  • Food: Leh has pure-veg and Gujarati-friendly options; in Nubra and Pangong, camps serve simple dal, rice and sabzi. Jain meals are basic but possible with notice.
  • Spiti: in May, enter from Shimla via Kinnaur (Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, Kaza). The Kaza–Manali exit over Kunzum depends on the opening, which in 2026 came around 20 May; Chandratal lake road usually follows later.

Families who want snow with less altitude should look at Manali and Sissu instead: see Manali tour packages from Ahmedabad and Shimla tour packages from Ahmedabad.

Char Dham in May 2027: start of the yatra season

Because Akshaya Tritiya falls on Sunday 9 May 2027, Gangotri and Yamunotri should open that day, and Kedarnath and Badrinath around the same time. The exact Kedarnath date is traditionally declared on Mahashivratri at the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath, and Badrinath's on Basant Panchami; neither had been announced as of November 2026. We do not fix hotels for the first week until those dates are out.

  • Registration: every Char Dham pilgrim needs the Uttarakhand government's yatra registration before travel; we complete it with your ID details.
  • Helicopter seats for Kedarnath go on sale on the official portal in batches and sell out within hours for May. Have a backup plan (pony, palki or walking with an overnight at Kedarnath) in case seats are not available.
  • Pacing for seniors: the full Char Dham by road needs 10–11 nights. Do-Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath) in 6–7 nights is easier and more common for grandparents travelling with grandchildren.
  • Food: pure-veg is the norm along the yatra route; most dhabas avoid onion and garlic on request, which suits Jain pilgrims.

Read the Char Dham Yatra package from Ahmedabad page for routes, registration and costs.

Sikkim, Darjeeling and the North East in early May

The eastern Himalaya gets its rain earlier than the west. Gangtok and Darjeeling are lovely in the first three weeks of May – rhododendrons still out at Yumthang and Tsomgo, tea gardens bright green – but by late May afternoon showers are daily and Kangchenjunga hides behind cloud more often than not.

  • North Sikkim: Lachung and Yumthang are usually open, Zero Point depends on snow. Landslides can close the North Sikkim road for a day or longer after heavy rain; we keep one buffer day.
  • Permits: Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim need permits, which our local team applies for with your photo ID.
  • Meghalaya and Assam: Kaziranga normally closes for the monsoon around the end of April or early May, and pre-monsoon storms are strong in Meghalaya. If the North East is the goal, go in March–April or embrace the rain in June.

See Sikkim and Darjeeling packages from Ahmedabad or North East packages from Ahmedabad.

South Indian hills and the Andaman Islands

Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal

The Nilgiris and Palani hills are the easiest May trip for grandparents and toddlers: a two-hour flight to Coimbatore or Bengaluru, then a gentle drive up to 2,000 m where afternoons stay in the low twenties. Ooty's flower show at the Government Botanical Garden is held in May, which brings Tamil Nadu and Karnataka families too, so roads up the ghat are slow at weekends. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train between Mettupalayam and Ooty is booked out weeks ahead in May. See Coorg and Ooty packages from Ahmedabad.

Coorg and Munnar

Both are pleasant until about the last week of May, when pre-monsoon showers arrive and the south-west monsoon follows around 1 June in Kerala. Munnar is the better half of a Kerala trip in May; the backwaters and coast are hot and humid. Details on Kerala packages from Ahmedabad.

Andaman: go early

The first half of May is the last good window before the south-west monsoon reaches the Andaman Sea, usually in the second half of the month. Until then, Havelock and Neil have calm water and good snorkelling visibility. After that, ferries run on a weather-dependent schedule and water sports operate only on calm days. If your dates are after 20 May, keep a buffer day before your flight home. See Andaman packages from Ahmedabad.

Places to avoid in May, and what to do instead

  • Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer): 42–47°C. Desert camps close. Save it for October to March and see Rajasthan packages from Ahmedabad for winter plans. Udaipur and Mount Abu are the only Rajasthan stops we would suggest in May.
  • Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Khajuraho, Hampi: monument days in May mean heat exhaustion for children and seniors. If a pilgrimage to Varanasi or Ayodhya cannot wait, sightsee before 10 am and after 5 pm.
  • Goa: fine for a pool-and-resort break in early May, but the monsoon usually arrives in the first or second week of June and the sea gets rough in the last week of May. Shacks start packing up from late May.
  • Kutch and Saurashtra: very hot; Gir is open until mid-June and good for lion sightings at dawn, but keep it to one morning safari a day.
  • Rohtang on a weekend in late May: permit limits and traffic make for a long day. A weekday, or Sissu instead, is far calmer.

May vacation from Ahmedabad: a booking calendar

The Gujarat board summer vacation runs from Monday 3 May to Sunday 6 June 2027. Std 9–11 annual exams finish on 20 April, and CBSE and other boards have similar windows, so the whole city tends to leave in the same three weeks. From what Ahmedabad families ask us each year, this is how to plan it without overpaying:

WhenWhat to bookWhy
December–JanuaryFlights for 1–15 May, Gulmarg and Pahalgam hotels, Ooty and Kodaikanal family roomsGood-value fares and the larger family rooms go first
February–MarchChar Dham hotels once Kedarnath and Badrinath dates are announced; yatra registration when it opensGuptkashi and Sitapur hotels fill within weeks of the announcement
As soon as the portal opensKedarnath helicopter seats, Nilgiri toy train, Gulmarg GondolaFixed daily quotas
8–10 weeks beforeLadakh camps, Andaman ferries, Sikkim permitsLimited capacity in each
Two weeks beforeRoad-opening check for Manali–Leh, Rohtang and KunzumDecides whether we keep the drive or switch to flights

Choosing the week

  • 3–15 May: best value of the vacation; good for Andaman, Sikkim and the south.
  • 15 May–5 June: peak crowds in Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand, but the best road access for Ladakh and Spiti.
  • Last week of the vacation: the monsoon reaches Kerala around this time, so the south gets wet; the Himalaya stays dry. The best places to visit in June in India guide covers that shift in detail.

Travelling with grandparents

Pick one base for two or three nights instead of a new hotel every night, keep drives under five hours, ask for ground-floor or lift-access rooms, and avoid altitude above 3,000 m for anyone with heart or lung issues. Kashmir, Ooty and Shimla do this better than Ladakh or Spiti. Every trip we plan is private, on your own dates, with your own car and driver; large families travel as a private group, not with strangers.

Short on leave? Two or three nights at Mount Abu or Saputara by road, or one of the weekend getaways from Ahmedabad, works too. For broader hill ideas, our older hill stations in India article lists more options.

Why plan your May trip with Vibrant Holidays

  • Road and temple checks: we follow BRO, Rohtang permit and temple committee announcements and tell you plainly if your plan depends on an opening that has not happened yet.
  • Peak-season inventory: we start holding May rooms in winter, so families who book early get the hotel they chose, not the one that was left.
  • Pure-veg and Jain meals requested in advance and confirmed in writing, with honesty about places like Pangong or North Sikkim where choice is basic.
  • Senior-friendly pacing: fewer hotel changes, shorter drives, pony or helicopter options on the yatra.
  • 11 years on C G Road, Ahmedabad: meet us at the office Monday to Saturday or plan on WhatsApp and phone, with 24×7 support on the trip. IATA-accredited; member of TAAI, TAFI, ADTOI and IATO; recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

Best Places to Visit in May in India: FAQs

Which is the best place to visit in May in India?

Kashmir is the most reliable choice in May: 12 to 26 degrees, all valleys open and long days. Ladakh is excellent from late May, Shimla and Manali suit first-time hill holidays, and Ooty or Kodaikanal are the easiest for seniors and toddlers. The Andaman Islands work only in the first half of the month.

Which places should I avoid in May in India?

Avoid Rajasthan desert cities, Delhi and Agra sightseeing, Hampi, Khajuraho and Kutch, where temperatures cross 42 degrees. Goa beaches get rough by the last week of May as the monsoon approaches, and Kaziranga is closed for the season. Andaman water sports become unreliable after about 20 May.

Is Ladakh open in May?

Leh is reachable by flight all year, and sightseeing around Leh, Nubra and Pangong is possible in May. The Srinagar to Leh road usually opens by April, but the Manali to Leh highway often opens only in mid or late May; in 2026 it opened to light vehicles on 14 May. Plan road trips for late May onwards.

Is Rohtang Pass open in May?

Usually from mid or late May, after snow clearance. In 2026 it opened to tourists on 15 May. Vehicles need an online permit issued in limited daily numbers, and in 2025 the pass was closed on Tuesdays for maintenance. If Rohtang is not open, Sissu through the Atal Tunnel gives a similar snow experience.

When does the Char Dham Yatra 2027 start?

Gangotri and Yamunotri traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on 9 May 2027. Kedarnath and Badrinath dates are announced by the temple priests on Mahashivratri and Basant Panchami, and had not been declared as of November 2026. Expect all four temples to be open by mid-May 2027.

When is the Gujarat school summer vacation in 2027?

According to the Gujarat board academic calendar for 2026 to 2027, the summer vacation runs for 35 days from 3 May to 6 June 2027. Std 9 to 11 annual exams end on 20 April. Many private schools follow similar dates, but check your own school circular before booking.

Is May a good time to visit Kashmir?

Yes, it is one of the best months. Srinagar is 12 to 26 degrees, Gulmarg is green with snow visible on the peaks above, and Sonamarg and Pahalgam are fully open. It is also peak season, so book flights, houseboats and Gulmarg Gondola tickets well in advance and expect higher hotel rates.

Can we see snow in May in India?

Yes, but only at height. Rohtang Pass, Sissu and Baralacha La in Himachal, the upper Gulmarg Gondola and Thajiwas glacier in Kashmir, Zero Point in North Sikkim and the passes of Ladakh usually still have snow in May. Hill towns such as Shimla, Manali and Nainital will not.

Is Andaman good in May?

The first half of May is still good, with calm seas around Havelock and Neil and decent snorkelling visibility. The south-west monsoon usually reaches the Andaman Sea in the second half of the month, after which ferries and water sports depend on daily weather. Keep a buffer day if you travel late in May.

Which hill station is best for senior citizens in May?

Ooty, Kodaikanal and Srinagar are the easiest: moderate altitude, short drives and hotels with lifts. Shimla is good if you avoid steep walks. Ladakh and Kedarnath need medical clearance for older travellers because of altitude. Choose one base for two or three nights to reduce packing and unpacking.

How early should we book a May holiday from Ahmedabad?

For travel between 15 May and 5 June, book flights and hill hotels four to five months ahead, ideally in December or January. Char Dham hotels should be held as soon as temple dates are announced. Kedarnath helicopter seats, the Ooty toy train and Gulmarg Gondola tickets open on fixed portals and sell out within hours.

Is Sikkim good to visit in May?

The first three weeks of May are good, with rhododendrons at Yumthang and mild weather in Gangtok and Darjeeling. Showers increase towards the end of the month and mountain views become less frequent. North Sikkim roads can close after heavy rain, so plan one spare day in the itinerary.
