Good forFamilies, senior citizens, vows and mundan, temple circuits

For many families in Ahmedabad, a Tirupati trip is a promise to keep – a vow after a wedding, a child's first mundan, or a parent's wish to see Venkateswara Swamy on the Tirumala hills. The trip itself is short: two or three nights are enough. What decides whether it goes smoothly is everything around the darshan – which ticket you hold, when the quota opens, how you reach a town that has no non-stop flight from Ahmedabad, and how much walking and queuing grandparents can manage.

This page is written for travellers from Ahmedabad and Gujarat. It explains the flight and train routings that actually work, the darshan options and TTD booking windows as of October 2026, three day-wise itineraries, a section for senior citizens and wheelchair users, the nearby temples worth adding, a month-by-month guide and what a Tirupati package really costs. One point upfront: no travel agent can guarantee a darshan slot. Tickets are issued by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in each pilgrim's name, and every plan is subject to TTD's quota. What we do is plan the trip around the ticket you hold.

How to reach Tirupati from Ahmedabad

As of October 2026 there is no non-stop flight between Ahmedabad and Tirupati. That leaves four sensible routings:

RoutingTime (approx.)Best for
One-stop flight Ahmedabad–Tirupati (TIR) on IndiGo, via a southern hub4½–6 h on the better connections; some take much longerShort 2-night trips; lands 15 km from Tirupati town
Non-stop Ahmedabad–Chennai (about 2½ h), then car to Tirupati (about 140 km)2½ h flight + 3–3½ h driveFamilies wanting more flight times and fares; combines with Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram
Non-stop Ahmedabad–Hyderabad (about 1¾ h), then flight or overnight train to TirupatiHalf a day to overnightTrips adding Hyderabad or Srisailam
Non-stop Ahmedabad–Bengaluru, then car (about 250 km)2¼ h flight + 5 h driveCombining with Mysuru or Coorg

By train

There is no daily direct train. As of October 2026, a few weekly services from Ahmedabad – including trains towards Chennai and Tiruchirappalli – stop at Renigunta Junction, 10 km from Tirupati, after about 26 hours, and weekly trains from Okha via Ahmedabad reach Tirupati station in 35–38 hours. Running days change, so we check IRCTC when you fix dates. The train suits senior groups doing the trip as a yatra; we add a rest night in Tirupati before darshan.

Up to Tirumala

The temple is on the Tirumala hills, about 22 km and 45–60 minutes up a one-way ghat road from Tirupati, with a separate road down. Private cars are checked at the Alipiri toll gate; hairpin bends are gentle but those prone to motion sickness should sit in front. Two-wheelers and private vehicles have restricted hours on the ghat road; your driver knows the current timings.

Tirumala darshan options, explained simply

All details below are as of October 2026; TTD revises rules, quotas and counter locations often, and we recheck them in the week before you travel.

  • ₹300 Special Entry Darshan (SED): the ticket most families should aim for. It is booked only on TTD's official website or app, in each pilgrim's name with Aadhaar or passport details, for a dated time slot. Quotas are released about three months ahead, usually around the 24th–25th of the month at 10 am – for example, the December 2026 quota opened on 24 September 2026 – and popular dates go within minutes. Report about an hour before your slot with the original ID used for booking. Total time inside is typically two to four hours.
  • Sarva Darshan (free): anyone can join. Free Slotted Sarva Darshan tokens are issued in person in Tirupati – at Vishnu Nivasam near the railway station, Srinivasam near the bus stand and Bhudevi Complex at Alipiri – on a first-come basis, and they cut the wait sharply. Without a token, waits run long: TTD's bulletin on 9 October 2026 put them at around 8–12 hours.
  • Footpath (Divya) darshan: pilgrims who climb on foot get a limited number of free tokens against their Aadhaar. The Alipiri path has about 3,550 steps (three to five hours); the shorter, steeper Srivari Mettu path has about 2,400 steps (one and a half to two and a half hours) and starts near Srinivasa Mangapuram. TTD carries your luggage up free. At times TTD has restricted children's timings on the footpaths after wildlife sightings, so check on the day.
  • Senior citizens and the differently abled: TTD runs a free darshan quota for pilgrims above 65 and for those with a disability certificate, with a booked daily slot; companion rules vary, so we confirm them when booking. It is released online around 3 pm on a set day each month and fills fast. Originals of age proof or the certificate must be shown at entry.
  • Parents with infants under one year: a separate entry with a short wait; carry the birth certificate.

Dress code and what to leave behind

  • For SED, seva and special darshan: dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men (formal trousers and shirt are often accepted); saree, half-saree or churidar with dupatta for women. No shorts, sleeveless tops or ripped jeans.
  • Mobile phones, cameras, bags and footwear are not allowed inside. Free deposit counters are near the queue complex; keep the token safe.
  • Every pilgrim who completes darshan usually receives a free small laddu; extra laddus can be bought at the laddu counters, subject to daily limits.

We do not sell darshan tickets or use agents' "VIP" routes. We help you book the official ticket in your own name the day the quota opens and plan the hotel, car and timings around it. If no SED is available for your dates, we tell you honestly and plan a midweek free-darshan visit with a token instead.

Three Tirupati itineraries from Ahmedabad

2 nights / 3 days – darshan, Padmavathi and Srikalahasti

  • Day 1: One-stop flight Ahmedabad–Tirupati, or fly to Chennai and drive. Check in; evening visit to Sri Padmavathi Ammavari temple at Tiruchanoor, 5 km from town. Early dinner and early sleep.
  • Day 2: Drive up to Tirumala for your darshan slot. Tonsure at Kalyana Katta if part of your vow, darshan, laddu collection; Akasa Ganga and Papavinasanam if energy allows. Return to Tirupati.
  • Day 3: Srikalahasti temple (about 36 km), known for the Vayu lingam and the Rahu-Ketu puja; then the airport or Chennai for the flight home.

3 nights / 4 days – Tirupati with Kanipakam and Vellore's Golden Temple

  • Days 1–2: As above, with darshan on day 2.
  • Day 3: Kanipakam's Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple (about 70 km), then the Sripuram Golden Temple near Vellore (Mahalakshmi; strict dress code and no phones). Night in Tirupati or Vellore.
  • Day 4: Srikalahasti on the way to Tirupati airport, or drive to Chennai for a wider choice of flights to Ahmedabad.

4 nights / 5 days – Chennai in, Tirupati, Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram

  • Day 1: Morning flight Ahmedabad–Chennai; drive to Tirupati; Tiruchanoor in the evening.
  • Day 2: Tirumala darshan; afternoon rest.
  • Day 3: Srikalahasti, then drive to Kanchipuram for Kamakshi Amman, Ekambareswarar and Varadaraja Perumal temples; silk-saree shopping.
  • Day 4: Mahabalipuram's Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas; evening at a beach resort on East Coast Road.
  • Day 5: Fly Chennai–Ahmedabad.

Adding Srisailam: the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga at Srisailam is about 215 km from Hyderabad and far from Tirupati, so we plan it from Hyderabad – one night at Srisailam, back to Hyderabad, then the overnight train or a short flight to Tirupati. It suits families completing a Jyotirlinga circuit.

Every itinerary is private and customised: your own car and driver, your own dates, and darshan day set by your ticket rather than a group schedule.

Tirupati for senior citizens and wheelchair users

  • Book the right quota: parents above 65 should use the senior-citizen quota where possible; it avoids the long queue complex. If it is full, an SED slot early in the morning is the next best option.
  • Stay in Tirupati, not Tirumala, for comfort: TTD cottages on Tirumala are clean and cheap but basic and hard to get; a hotel in Tirupati with a lift and a car to drive up for the slot is easier for most seniors. For very early slots we sometimes book one night on the hill.
  • Getting around Tirumala: TTD runs free buses on the hill and keeps wheelchairs and battery vehicles at main points, subject to availability; we ask your driver to drop you as close as permitted.
  • Avoid the heat: Tirupati town touches 38–42°C from April to June. Keep darshan to the morning or evening and carry water and ORS.
  • Medicines and food timing: the queue can take longer than planned. Diabetics should carry snacks that are allowed and keep medicines in a small transparent pouch.
  • Do not attempt the footpath with knee or heart problems. Family members who wish to climb can do so while seniors take the car up.

Best time to visit Tirupati from Ahmedabad

MonthsWeather in TirupatiCrowds and notes
January – FebruaryPleasant, 18–30°CGood; Vaikuntha Ekadasi period (December or January) has special Vaikuntha Dwara darshan with separate tokens and huge crowds
March – JuneHot, up to 40°C and aboveSouthern school holidays make May and June the busiest of the year; Gujarat's vacation (3 May – 6 June 2027) overlaps
July – AugustWarm with some showersModerate crowds midweek
September – OctoberWarm, humidSrivari Brahmotsavam; in 2026 the Navaratri Brahmotsavam ran 11–20 October, when privileged darshans including senior-citizen slots were cancelled
November – DecemberCooler, north-east monsoon rainGood for Gujarat's Diwali vacation (5–25 November 2026); heavy rain can slow the ghat road

Weekends, public holidays and auspicious days draw the largest crowds. A Tuesday-to-Thursday darshan is usually calmer, and the ₹300 quota for weekdays is easier to get.

Food and practical tips for Gujarati pilgrims

Vegetarian and Jain food

Tirumala is entirely vegetarian, and alcohol, meat and tobacco are banned on the hill. TTD's Tarigonda Vengamamba annaprasadam complex serves free meals to thousands of pilgrims daily. In Tirupati town there are many pure-veg South Indian restaurants and a few North Indian and Gujarati-style thali places near the railway station and on the main roads. Jain food (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) is simpler to arrange at hotels than in restaurants; we brief the hotel in advance and print it on your voucher. Carry theplas, khakhra and dry snacks for the travel day and the queue.

Practical points

  • Book TTD accommodation on Tirumala and the darshan ticket on the same quota days if you want to stay on the hill; rooms are released online separately.
  • Carry the original ID used for each booking; photocopies are not accepted at entry.
  • Pack traditional clothes, a light shawl for early mornings on the hill, and comfortable footwear you are happy to leave at the counter.
  • Beware of touts offering quick darshan; buy only from TTD.
  • Combine the trip with other southern holidays on our South India packages, such as Kerala from Ahmedabad or Coorg and Ooty from Ahmedabad.

How much does a Tirupati tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Tirupati packages currently start at ₹13,500 per person for 1 nights. Most of our Tirupati packages fall between ₹24,000 and ₹50,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Tirupati?

Not as of October 2026. IndiGo connects Ahmedabad and Tirupati with one stop, taking about 4 hours 20 minutes on the best connection and much longer on others. Many families instead fly non-stop to Chennai in about two and a half hours and drive around three hours to Tirupati.

How do I book the ₹300 special entry darshan ticket?

Only on the official TTD website or app, in each pilgrim's name with Aadhaar or passport details. Quotas open about three months ahead, usually around the 24th or 25th of the month at 10 am, and sell out quickly. We help you prepare details in advance and book on release day, subject to TTD quota.

Can you guarantee a darshan slot at Tirumala?

No, and nobody honest can. Every darshan ticket is issued by TTD in the pilgrim's own name and depends on its quota. We plan the trip around the ticket you hold, and if no paid slot is available we arrange a midweek visit with a free Slotted Sarva Darshan token instead.

How many days are enough for a Tirupati trip from Ahmedabad?

Two nights cover Tirumala darshan, Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanoor and Srikalahasti. Three nights add Kanipakam and the Golden Temple near Vellore. Four or five nights let you include Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram via Chennai, or Srisailam via Hyderabad.

Is there a train from Ahmedabad to Tirupati?

There is no daily direct train. As of October 2026, a few weekly trains from Ahmedabad stop at Renigunta Junction, 10 km from Tirupati, after about 26 hours, and weekly trains from Okha reach Tirupati in 35 to 38 hours. We check running days on IRCTC when you fix dates.

What is the dress code for Tirumala darshan?

For special entry and seva darshan, men should wear a dhoti or kurta-pyjama, though formal trousers with a shirt are often accepted, and women a saree, half-saree or churidar with dupatta. Shorts, sleeveless tops and torn jeans are not allowed. Phones, cameras and footwear must be deposited before entering.

Is there special darshan for senior citizens at Tirupati?

Yes. TTD offers a free darshan quota for pilgrims above 65 and for people with disabilities. It is released online every month and fills fast, and the original age proof or disability certificate must be shown at entry. During Brahmotsavam and some festivals these slots are suspended.

Should we climb the steps to Tirumala?

Only if you are fit. The Alipiri path has about 3,550 steps and takes three to five hours; Srivari Mettu has about 2,400 steps and takes under three hours. Climbers can get limited free darshan tokens. Start before sunrise, carry water, and let senior family members go up by car.

Which temples can be visited near Tirupati?

Sri Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanoor is 5 km away, Srikalahasti about 36 km, Kanipakam Vinayaka temple about 70 km and the Sripuram Golden Temple near Vellore about 120 km. Kanchipuram is a half-day drive towards Chennai. Srisailam is best visited from Hyderabad.

Is Jain food available in Tirupati?

Tirumala and Tirupati are strongly vegetarian, so pure-veg food is easy. Jain food without onion, garlic or root vegetables is easier to arrange at hotels than in restaurants. We inform hotels in advance, print the requirement on your vouchers, and suggest carrying theplas and khakhra for the queue.

When is the best time to visit Tirupati?

September to February is the most comfortable. May and June are the most crowded because of school holidays across South India, and Tirupati is very hot from April to June. Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadasi are spiritually special but extremely crowded. A Tuesday to Thursday visit is usually the calmest.
