Jagannath darshan, the Sun Temple at Konark and dolphins on Chilika lake – 18 Odisha packages from Ahmedabad for families, parents and pilgrims.

For most Gujarati families, Odisha begins and ends with one name: Jagannath Puri. The darshan at the Shree Jagannath temple, the Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar and a sunrise on Puri beach are reasons enough for the trip. But the state rewards an extra two or three days – the Sun Temple at Konark is an hour away, Bhubaneswar's Lingaraj temple and the Khandagiri caves are another hour, and the dolphins and migratory birds of Chilika lake are a morning's drive. Together they make the best-value pilgrimage-plus-holiday in eastern India.

All 18 packages below are live with current prices. Further down you will find our price guide, flight and train options from Ahmedabad, three day-wise itineraries, a darshan etiquette and Rath Yatra planning guide that no other page gives you, the month-wise planner and where to find Gujarati food near Swargadwar.

Odisha tour package price guide (2026)

Odisha packages on this page start at ₹6,700 per person. Odisha is one of the most affordable states we sell – hotel rates in Puri and Bhubaneswar are low outside Rath Yatra and the Christmas week – so a 4-star trip here costs what a 3-star trip costs in Goa. Bands are per person on twin sharing with breakfast, private AC car and sightseeing, excluding flights or train fares.

Add for flights: Ahmedabad–Bhubaneswar return fares are typically ₹9,000–14,000 per person when booked 4–6 weeks ahead; higher around Rath Yatra, Diwali and Christmas. Usually extra on the ground: Konark Sun Temple and museum tickets, Chilika boat hire (shared or private), Nandankanan zoo and safari tickets, special darshan or panda (temple priest) fees at Puri, Mahaprasad purchases, lunches and dinners unless a meal plan is chosen. Each quote spells these out.

How to reach Odisha from Ahmedabad

  • By air (recommended): Bhubaneswar (BBI) is the only practical airport. Non-stop flights from Ahmedabad take about 2 hours 15 minutes on the days they run; one-stop options via Hyderabad, Delhi or Mumbai take 5–6 hours door to door. Puri is a 1 hour 30 minute drive from the airport on a good four-lane road, so most of our itineraries go straight to Puri on arrival and keep Bhubaneswar for the last day.
  • By train: Ahmedabad has direct trains to Puri and Bhubaneswar that take roughly 36–40 hours. For parents who dislike flying, or for a large family who want to keep costs down, we book 2AC or 3AC berths and arrange the pickup at Puri station; the train journey across central India is comfortable but long, so budget two extra days.
  • Getting around: every package has a private AC car (Dzire for couples, Innova Crysta for families, Tempo Traveller for extended families travelling together) with an Odia driver who knows the temple-town parking rules. Odisha's coastal roads are good and distances are short.

Odisha itineraries – darshan weekend, family circuit and the complete coast

3 nights / 4 days – Jagannath Puri darshan with Konark and Bhubaneswar (parents and pilgrims)

  • Day 1: Fly Ahmedabad–Bhubaneswar, drive to Puri, check in near Swargadwar; evening darshan at Shree Jagannath temple and the Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar.
  • Day 2: Early darshan again for those who want it (the temple is quietest around 6 am), then Gundicha temple, Lokanath temple and the Narendra tank; afternoon on Puri beach or at the Raghurajpur artists' village with its pattachitra painters.
  • Day 3: Drive along the Marine Drive to Konark – the 13th-century Sun Temple, its museum and Chandrabhaga beach; continue to Bhubaneswar for Lingaraj temple (viewing platform for non-Hindus), Mukteswar and Rajarani temples; stay in Bhubaneswar.
  • Day 4: Khandagiri and Udayagiri Jain caves – an important stop for Jain families – and Dhauli peace pagoda; fly home in the afternoon.

4 nights / 5 days – family Odisha with Chilika lake

  • Day 1: Arrive Bhubaneswar, drive to Puri; evening at the temple and the Grand Road (Bada Danda).
  • Day 2: Morning darshan, then a full beach day – camel and horse rides, the sand-art displays, the lighthouse at sunset.
  • Day 3: Drive to Satapada on Chilika lake for a boat ride to the sea mouth to spot Irrawaddy dolphins (best November–February); back to Puri by afternoon, Raghurajpur village en route.
  • Day 4: Konark Sun Temple and Chandrabhaga beach, then Bhubaneswar; Nandankanan zoo's white tigers and the botanical garden for children; stay in Bhubaneswar.
  • Day 5: Lingaraj temple, Khandagiri–Udayagiri caves, Odisha State Museum; fly home.

6 nights / 7 days – complete Odisha with mangroves or a second beach

Follow the 4-night family route, then choose one of two endings. Bhitarkanika: two nights near Gupti for boat safaris through mangrove creeks with saltwater crocodiles, kingfishers and the Gahirmatha turtle coast (open roughly October to May). Or Gopalpur-on-Sea: two slow nights at a quiet beach resort south of Chilika with Taptapani hot springs as a day trip – the better choice for seniors. Both end with a drive back to Bhubaneswar airport.

Honeymooners usually take the 4-night plan with a sea-facing room in Puri and one night at a Chilika lake resort at Barkul or Rambha.

Jagannath Puri darshan guide – etiquette, Mahaprasad and Rath Yatra planning

Temple etiquette and rules

  • Entry: only Hindus are permitted inside the Shree Jagannath temple. Non-Hindu family members can view the temple from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite the Singhadwara (Lion Gate).
  • Not allowed inside: mobile phones, cameras, leather items (belts, wallets, bags), footwear and umbrellas. Lockers and footwear counters stand outside the gates; we show you the reliable ones. Dress modestly – traditional Indian clothes are ideal, shorts and sleeveless tops are turned away.
  • Darshan timings: the temple opens around 5 am and closes around midnight, with closures during rituals. The quietest darshan is between 6 and 8 am; late afternoon before the evening dhupa (meal offering) is the busiest. We give you the day's ritual schedule the evening before.
  • Pandas: temple priests offer to guide you and perform special pujas for a fee. Agree the amount beforehand; our Puri partner can introduce you to a known panda if you want a guided darshan or a puja for parents.
  • Four deities, four gates: Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshana sit on the Ratna Singhasana; the Nilachakra atop the temple is visible from the beach and is itself worshipped.

Mahaprasad – the vegetarian highlight of the trip

Mahaprasad is cooked in earthen pots over wood fires in the temple's kitchen – said to be the largest in the world – and sold at Ananda Bazaar inside the temple complex every afternoon. It is entirely satvik: no onion, no garlic, no potatoes or tomatoes, and dozens of preparations of rice, dal, vegetables, khichdi and sweets. For Gujarati vegetarians it is the most memorable meal in Odisha; eat it seated on the floor with the family, as pilgrims have for centuries. Sellers quote by the pot; a lunch for four costs a few hundred rupees.

Rath Yatra – planning the chariot festival

  • When: Rath Yatra falls on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, usually in late June or July; the deities return in the Bahuda Yatra about nine days later. Exact dates change each year with the lunar calendar – ask us for the current year's date before you plan leave.
  • What happens: the three chariots are pulled by hand along the 3 km Grand Road from the main temple to Gundicha temple, with a crowd that runs into lakhs. The pulling starts in the afternoon; the chariots often reach Gundicha the next morning.
  • Where to be: we book rooms or rooftops on the Grand Road months in advance so parents can watch seated rather than stand in the crowd. Hotels anywhere in Puri sell out for the week and charge 40–80% more; book by March.
  • For seniors and children: the darshan on the chariots (no entry rules apply on the chariots) is possible on the days the deities rest at Gundicha; the pulling day itself is for the fit and patient. Carry water, a cap, ORS and a copy of your ID; mobile networks are overloaded.
  • Snana Purnima and Anavasara: in the fortnight before Rath Yatra the deities are not on view in the main temple. If you travel in late June, check this with us so you are not disappointed.

Places to visit in Odisha

  • Shree Jagannath temple, Puri: one of the Char Dham of Hindu tradition and the reason most families come; darshan, Mahaprasad and the Grand Road.
  • Puri beach and Swargadwar: sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, sand art, camel rides and the Gujarati bhojanalayas and dharamshalas a few lanes behind the sea.
  • Konark Sun Temple: the 13th-century chariot of the sun god with its 24 carved wheels, a UNESCO World Heritage Site an hour from Puri.
  • Chandrabhaga beach: the clean, quiet beach near Konark – a better swim than Puri's crowded shore.
  • Chilika lake, Satapada: Asia's largest brackish lagoon; boat rides for Irrawaddy dolphins and, from Mangalajodi or Nalabana, lakhs of migratory birds from November to February.
  • Lingaraj temple, Bhubaneswar: the great 11th-century Shiva temple; non-Hindus view it from a platform. Mukteswar, Rajarani and Parasurameswar temples are nearby.
  • Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves: 2nd-century BCE Jain rock-cut caves and a Jain temple on the hilltop – a meaningful stop for Jain families from Gujarat.
  • Dhauli: the Shanti Stupa and Ashokan edicts where the emperor turned to Buddhism after the Kalinga war.
  • Nandankanan zoo: white tigers, a lion safari and a botanical garden – the children's favourite in Bhubaneswar.
  • Raghurajpur: the heritage crafts village near Puri where every house paints pattachitra and carves palm leaf.
  • Bhitarkanika National Park: mangrove creeks, saltwater crocodiles and the Gahirmatha turtle nesting coast.
  • Gopalpur-on-Sea and Chandipur: quiet beaches – Gopalpur for resorts in the south, Chandipur for the sea that recedes 5 km at low tide in the north.

Food, hotels and tips for Gujarati travellers

  • Gujarati food in Puri: Puri has hosted Gujarati pilgrims for generations, so several Gujarati bhojanalayas and community dharamshalas sit within a few minutes of Swargadwar and the temple, serving thali, dal-bhat-rotli-shaak and Jain options. We give you the current list and a map with your vouchers. Bhubaneswar has pure-veg restaurants near Master Canteen and Saheed Nagar; Marwari and South Indian vegetarian places are easy to find.
  • Odia vegetarian food worth trying: dalma (dal with vegetables), santula, pakhala (fermented rice, good in summer), chhena poda (baked cheese dessert) and rasagola – Odisha's original. Most Odia restaurants cook fish too, so for strict vegetarians we point you to the pure-veg places.
  • Jain meals: the Mahaprasad itself has no onion, garlic or potato. Hotels prepare Jain meals on a day's notice; we confirm in writing. Khandagiri's Jain temple area has a Jain bhojanshala on some days.
  • Hotel categories: in Puri, choose between the temple side (walking distance to darshan, simpler hotels) and the Marine Drive or Swargadwar sea-facing stretch (3★ to 5★ with pools). Bhubaneswar has good business hotels from 3★ to 5★. Chilika has one or two lake resorts; Bhitarkanika has eco-lodges only.
  • Pack: cotton clothes that cover knees and shoulders for temples, a cloth or jute bag (no leather at the temple), a cap and sunscreen, light woollens for December–January mornings, and your ID for hotel and darshan counters.
  • Money and connectivity: UPI is accepted in Puri and Bhubaneswar, including by most pandas and bhojanalayas; carry some cash for Chilika boatmen and village stops. Networks are fine except on the lake.
  • Timings: Konark is open roughly sunrise to sunset; Lingaraj temple closes mid-afternoon for a few hours; Nandankanan is closed on Mondays; Chilika boat rides for dolphins are best before 10 am when the water is calm.

Odisha tour packages – frequently asked questions

How much does an Odisha tour package cost from Ahmedabad?

Odisha packages on this page start at ₹6,700 per person. A 3-night Puri–Konark–Bhubaneswar package with 3-star hotels, breakfast and a private car costs ₹11,000–15,000 per person excluding flights; sea-facing 4-star hotels take it to ₹18,000–25,000. Ahmedabad–Bhubaneswar return flights add roughly ₹9,000–14,000 per person.

How do I reach Puri from Ahmedabad?

Fly Ahmedabad to Bhubaneswar – about 2 hours 15 minutes non-stop on days it operates, or 5–6 hours with one stop – then drive 1 hour 30 minutes to Puri. Direct trains from Ahmedabad to Puri take roughly 36–40 hours and suit parents who prefer not to fly; we book 2AC or 3AC berths and arrange the station pickup.

What are the rules for darshan at Jagannath temple?

Only Hindus may enter. Mobile phones, cameras, leather items, footwear and umbrellas are not allowed inside – use the lockers at the gates. Dress modestly; traditional clothes are ideal. The temple opens around 5 am and the quietest darshan is between 6 and 8 am. Agree any panda (priest) fee in advance; we can introduce a known panda if you want a guided darshan.

What is Mahaprasad and is it suitable for Gujarati vegetarians?

Mahaprasad is the food cooked in the temple kitchen and sold at Ananda Bazaar inside the complex each afternoon. It is completely satvik – no onion, garlic, potato or tomato – with rice, dal, vegetables, khichdi and sweets. It is ideal for Gujarati vegetarians and most Jain travellers, and eating it seated with the family is a highlight of the trip.

When is Rath Yatra and how early should I book?

Rath Yatra falls on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, usually in late June or July, with the return Bahuda Yatra about nine days later; the exact date changes yearly. Puri hotels sell out and rates rise 40–80%, so book by March. We arrange rooms or rooftop seats on the Grand Road so parents can watch the chariots seated.

When is the best time to visit Odisha?

November to February – dry, pleasant weather, dolphins and migratory birds on Chilika, and the Konark Dance Festival in early December. October to November suits Diwali-week darshan trips but carries a small cyclone risk, which we monitor. May is hot but has the lowest hotel rates and works with early-morning sightseeing.

How many days are enough for Odisha?

Two nights covers Puri darshan and Konark. Three nights adds Bhubaneswar's temples and the Khandagiri Jain caves. Four nights lets you add Chilika lake for dolphins and Nandankanan for children. Six nights is right for the complete coast with Bhitarkanika mangroves or a quiet beach stay at Gopalpur.

Is Gujarati food available in Puri?

Yes. Several Gujarati bhojanalayas and community dharamshalas within a few minutes of Swargadwar and the temple serve thali, dal-bhat-rotli-shaak and Jain options, and have done so for generations of Gujarati pilgrims. We share the current list with your vouchers. Bhubaneswar also has pure-veg and Marwari restaurants.

Is Odisha suitable for senior citizens?

Very suitable. Drives are 1–1.5 hours, roads are good, and Puri hotels near the temple let seniors walk to darshan. We arrange early-morning darshan to avoid queues, keep one free afternoon, and book hotels with lifts. For Rath Yatra we book seated viewing on the Grand Road rather than a place in the crowd.

Can Jain families visit anything specific in Odisha?

Yes – the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves near Bhubaneswar are 2nd-century BCE Jain rock-cut caves built under King Kharavela, with a Jain temple on the Khandagiri hilltop. Jain meals are arranged at hotels on a day's notice, and the Mahaprasad at Puri contains no onion, garlic or root vegetables.

When can we see dolphins and birds at Chilika lake?

Irrawaddy dolphins are spotted on boat rides from Satapada all year, with the best sightings on calm mornings from November to February. Migratory birds arrive in lakhs at Mangalajodi and Nalabana between November and February. Boat rides are best before 10 am; we arrange a private boat so seniors and children are comfortable.

What is usually not included in an Odisha package?

Flights or train fares unless added, lunches and dinners unless a meal plan is chosen, Konark and museum tickets, Chilika boat hire, Nandankanan tickets, special darshan or panda fees, Mahaprasad purchases, tips, personal expenses and GST at 5%. Our quotes list every inclusion and exclusion side by side.
