Good forSenior yatris, families, Shiv bhakts completing all 12

Gujarat is a lucky place to start a Jyotirlinga yatra. Somnath, the first of the twelve, and Nageshwar near Dwarka are both in Saurashtra, a day's drive from Ahmedabad. Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain and Omkareshwar on the Narmada are roughly the same distance in the other direction. The three Maharashtra shrines – Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar and Bhimashankar – sit within a long drive or a short flight. That means a family in Ahmedabad can complete seven of the twelve without ever boarding a plane, and only the far north, east and south need flights.

Most of the yatris we plan for are parents or grandparents doing the Jyotirlingas as a lifetime vow, usually with a son or daughter who has limited leave. So this page is practical rather than poetic. It sets out realistic circuits, a distance and hours table from Ahmedabad for all twelve, the booking rules that catch people out (Bhasma Aarti at Ujjain is the big one), the dress and phone rules at each temple, the season pattern at Kedarnath, and the dates that matter in 2027: Maha Shivratri on 6 March and the Shravan month in July–August. Packages listed on this page show live prices.

How to group the twelve Jyotirlingas from Ahmedabad

Trying all twelve in one trip means three to four weeks and several flights, which is exhausting for elders. We plan them in phases. The first three phases can all be done by road from Ahmedabad.

6. SouthMallikarjuna (Srisailam), Ramanathaswamy (Rameswaram)5–6Fly to Hyderabad for Srisailam; Madurai for Rameswaram

About the disputed shrines: some traditions place Nageshwar at Aundha in Maharashtra or at Jageshwar near Almora, and Baidyanath at Parli Vaijnath in Maharashtra rather than Deoghar in Jharkhand. Many Gujarati families follow the Dwarka and Deoghar list, while Maharashtrian families often visit Aundha Nagnath and Parli. Both Aundha and Parli are about five hours from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), so we add them to Phase 3 if your family's tradition counts them.

All twelve over a year

A pattern that works well for retired couples: Saurashtra and Ujjain–Omkareshwar in the winter, Kashi and Deoghar in February, Kedarnath in late May or September, the Maharashtra trio after the monsoon and the south in December or January. We keep a record of which shrines you have completed and plan the next phase around the season.

Temple rules, bookings and seasons as of October 2026

Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti, Ujjain

  • Booked on the temple's official website (shrimahakaleshwar.com). Advance booking opens roughly a month ahead and fills fast; a small quota opens a day before. Original photo ID is checked at entry against the booking.
  • Reporting is in the small hours, roughly 1:30–2:30 am, for an aarti that begins around 4 am. Phones are not allowed past security, so carry a printed pass.
  • Devotees who go close to the sanctum must follow the dress code: unstitched dhoti for men, saree for women. Others watch from the Nandi hall.
  • The process has changed several times in recent years, so we recheck it before your dates. We never promise a Bhasma Aarti seat; normal darshan through Mahakal Lok is always possible.

Other shrines

  • Somnath: mobile phones, cameras and bags must be deposited before security; lockers are free. Aartis are at about 7 am, noon and 7 pm.
  • Grishneshwar: by tradition men remove shirts and vests to enter the sanctum.
  • Trimbakeshwar: the Simhastha Kumbh Mela began in Nashik–Trimbakeshwar on 31 October 2026, and its bathing days through 2027 bring very large crowds and traffic restrictions. We check the official calendar before fixing your dates.
  • Bhimashankar: about 230 steps down from the parking to the temple and back up. In the monsoon the forest road is foggy and slippery; we prefer October to March.
  • Kedarnath: the doors usually open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and close on Bhai Dooj after Diwali; the 2027 opening date is traditionally announced on Maha Shivratri. Uttarakhand requires online yatra registration for every pilgrim.
  • Kashi Vishwanath: a paid Sugam darshan slot on the temple website shortens the queue; phones are not allowed inside.

Dates for 2027

  • Maha Shivratri: 6 March 2027. Every Jyotirlinga is at its busiest; queues of six hours or more are common at Ujjain, Somnath and Kashi. Beautiful for the devotion, hard for elders.
  • Shravan 2027: in the Gujarati and Marathi calendar it runs roughly from 2 to 31 August, with Mondays on 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 August. At Ujjain, Kashi and Deoghar, which follow the northern calendar, it begins about two weeks earlier, in mid-July. Shravan Mondays draw enormous crowds and Mahakal's sawari processions; book three months ahead and expect darshan rules to tighten.

Food, pace and comfort for senior yatris

  • Gujarati food is easy for the first seven. Somnath and Dwarka have Gujarati thali everywhere, and the Somnath Trust's bhojanalaya is popular. Ujjain and Omkareshwar have many pure-veg Marwari and Gujarati restaurants; Nashik and Shirdi serve Maharashtrian and Gujarati thalis, and Jain food is available with a little notice.
  • Further away it needs planning. At Srisailam and Rameswaram food is South Indian vegetarian, with little Gujarati choice; at Kedarnath it is basic North Indian. We book hotels that will cook simply without onion and garlic and tell you honestly where to carry theplas and khakhra.
  • Drive limits: we cap road days at about seven hours for elders and break the long Ahmedabad–Nashik and Ahmedabad–Ujjain runs with tea stops every two hours.
  • Night darshan versus sleep: Bhasma Aarti and Dwarka's mangala darshan both mean very early mornings. We plan a rest afternoon after each and never schedule a long drive on the same day.
  • Steps and queues: wheelchairs are available at Somnath, Mahakal Lok and Kashi Vishwanath; Bhimashankar and Kedarnath are the physically hard ones and need honest discussion before booking.

Why yatris choose Vibrant Holidays for the Jyotirlingas

  • Bookings handled, no false promises: we apply for Bhasma Aarti, Sugam darshan and yatra registrations and tell you honestly what is confirmed and what is not.
  • Meals and rooms confirmed in writing: pure-veg or Jain food and ground-floor or lift rooms are printed on vouchers.

Jyotirlinga tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Jyotirlinga tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Jyotirlinga packages currently start at ₹11,000 per person for 1 nights. Most of our Jyotirlinga packages fall between ₹20,500 and ₹38,500 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Which Jyotirlingas can we visit by road from Ahmedabad?

Seven of the twelve are practical by road: Somnath and Nageshwar in Saurashtra, Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, and Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar and Bhimashankar in Maharashtra. Somnath and Ujjain are each about 400 km away. The other five need a flight for at least one leg.

How many days are needed for Somnath and Nageshwar from Ahmedabad?

Three nights is comfortable: Somnath on the first evening, the coastal drive to Dwarka on day two, Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka on day three, and the drive home on day four. Two nights is possible for fit travellers but means long drives back to back.

How do we book the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar?

It is booked on the temple's official website with photo ID for each person, usually opening about a month ahead, with a small quota released a day before. Reporting is around 2 am and a dress code applies near the sanctum. We apply on your behalf but cannot guarantee a seat.

Is Ujjain to Omkareshwar a long drive?

It is about 140 km and three hours by car. Most families do Mahakaleshwar on day one, Bhasma Aarti or morning darshan on day two, and drive to Omkareshwar the same afternoon. Indore airport lies between them if you want to fly back to Ahmedabad.

Which is the twelfth Jyotirlinga, Deoghar or Parli Vaijnath?

Traditions differ. Many Gujarati and North Indian families count Baidyanath at Deoghar in Jharkhand, while Maharashtrian tradition counts Parli Vaijnath. Similarly, Nageshwar is placed at Dwarka, Aundha or Jageshwar. We plan whichever list your family follows, and some yatris visit both.

When is Maha Shivratri in 2027?

Maha Shivratri falls on 6 March 2027. It is the most crowded day of the year at every Jyotirlinga, with very long queues and restricted special darshan. If the date itself is not important to you, visiting a week before or after gives a far calmer darshan.

When does Kedarnath open and close?

Kedarnath usually opens around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and closes on Bhai Dooj, a couple of days after Diwali. The opening date for the next season is traditionally announced on Maha Shivratri. May–June and September–October are the comfortable windows; the monsoon months carry landslide risk.

Is it a good idea to visit Jyotirlingas in Shravan?

For devotion, yes; for comfort, no. In 2027 Shravan runs roughly through August in the Gujarati calendar and from mid-July in the northern calendar. Mondays are packed, special darshan is often suspended and hotels cost more. Seniors usually prefer October to March.

Can we travel to Ujjain from Ahmedabad by train?

Yes. Several trains run from Ahmedabad to Ujjain via Ratlam, the Sabarmati Express among them, taking roughly eight to ten hours. Many families take an overnight train, use a car locally for Ujjain and Omkareshwar, and return by train or a flight from Indore.

Is Bhimashankar difficult for elderly travellers?

It is the hardest of the Maharashtra three. The temple is about 230 steps down from the parking, which means climbing back up, and the forest road is winding. Most seniors manage slowly in dry months. In the monsoon fog and slippery steps make it risky, so we plan it from October to March.

Is Jain food available on Jyotirlinga circuits?

On the Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra circuits, yes, with a day's notice at hotels and at several bhojanalayas. At Srisailam, Rameswaram and Kedarnath it is harder, and meals are simple vegetarian. We confirm your requirement in writing with each hotel and suggest dry snacks for the remote stops.
