For a Gujarati family, Sikkim and Darjeeling are the Himalaya at their most welcoming: snow peaks on the horizon, monasteries and tea gardens, quiet towns where children can walk the promenade in the evening, and hotels used to hosting families from western India. Distance used to be the catch, but non-stop flights from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport reach Bagdogra in under three hours, which makes a week in the eastern Himalaya as easy to plan from Ahmedabad as Manali or Kashmir.

This page is written for travellers leaving from Ahmedabad and the rest of Gujarat. It sets out realistic per-person costs, how the flights and the long train journey to New Jalpaiguri actually work, an altitude ladder that explains why the order of the route matters for grandparents, three day-wise plans, the permit rules for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, the Diwali and May vacation crunch, and where you will find Gujarati, Marwari and Jain food in the hills. Packages listed on this page carry live prices, and every trip is private, with your own car and driver.

What a Sikkim and Darjeeling trip from Ahmedabad costs (2026)

Today the lowest live price among our Sikkim packages is ₹17,999 per person, and 24 packages are open for booking. Use the bands below to judge any quote. They are per person with two adults in a room, without the Ahmedabad–Bagdogra flight, and include hotels with breakfast and dinner, full board in Lachung, a private vehicle from Bagdogra and back, sightseeing as listed and the routine permits for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim.

RouteStandardDeluxePremium
6 nights: Gangtok 3, Darjeeling 3 (no North Sikkim)₹16,000 – 21,000₹22,500 – 30,000₹38,000 – 56,000
7 nights: Gangtok 3, Lachung 1, Darjeeling 3₹19,500 – 25,500₹27,000 – 35,500₹45,000 – 66,000
8 nights: Gangtok, Pelling, Darjeeling at an unhurried pace₹21,500 – 28,000₹30,000 – 40,000₹50,000 – 75,000
9 nights: the full loop with Lachung and Pelling₹25,000 – 33,000₹35,000 – 47,000₹58,000 – 88,000

Flight from Ahmedabad: a return ticket to Bagdogra on a non-stop flight usually costs ₹11,000 – 19,000 per person when bought five or six weeks out. Diwali week, the Christmas break and the last week of May can push that to ₹22,000 – 30,000, because the non-stop seats are limited and sell first. One-stop itineraries through Kolkata, Delhi or Mumbai are often cheaper on peak dates but add three to six hours.

Paid on the spot unless you ask us to include it: the Nathu La supplement for vehicle and permit, the Zero Point extension above Yumthang, the toy train joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum, the early-morning Tiger Hill vehicle, the Gangtok ropeway, hired snow boots and coats at Tsomgo, Pelling skywalk and monastery tickets, lunches and tips. Each one appears as a separate line on our quote with a current estimate.

The quiet driver of price is group size. A 4×4 or Innova costs the same for two passengers as for five, so a couple pays more per head than a family of four.

Getting from Ahmedabad to Bagdogra, NJP and Gangtok

Flying from SVPI (AMD) to Bagdogra (IXB)

  • Non-stop: as of October 2026, Akasa Air and SpiceJet each fly Ahmedabad–Bagdogra non-stop on most days, in about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. Schedules change with each season, so we confirm the operating days when we price your trip.
  • One-stop: IndiGo and Air India connect through Kolkata, Delhi or Mumbai. These are the fallback when the non-stops are full, and they give more choice of departure time.
  • Timing: a late-morning or midday departure lands you in Bagdogra in the afternoon. Gangtok is 4½–5 hours away and the last part of the road is in the dark by early evening in winter, so on afternoon arrivals we often suggest a first night in Siliguri or Darjeeling (3 hours) instead.
  • Pakyong: Sikkim's own airport near Gangtok has no scheduled commercial flights as of October 2026. Service has started and stopped several times since 2018, and fog and short runway rules make it unreliable even when it runs. We plan every Ahmedabad trip through Bagdogra.

By train from Ahmedabad (Kalupur) to New Jalpaiguri

A few long-distance expresses from Saurashtra and Kutch to Assam run through Ahmedabad Junction and stop at New Jalpaiguri (NJP). Most run once or twice a week and take about 40–44 hours, crossing Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is a long ride, but some retired couples and large joint families enjoy it and save on airfare. A sensible mix is train one way and the non-stop flight the other. If you choose the train, we time the NJP pick-up to its arrival, which on several of these services is in the small hours, and book a room in Siliguri so nobody has to start a hill drive half asleep.

Road distances once you land

StretchApprox. drive
Bagdogra – Darjeeling (via Rohini or Pankhabari road)3 hours
Bagdogra – Gangtok (NH10 along the Teesta)4½ – 5 hours
Gangtok – Lachung6 – 7 hours
Gangtok – Pellingabout 5 hours
Pelling – Darjeeling (via Jorethang)4 – 5 hours
Darjeeling – Bagdogra for the flight home3 – 3½ hours

Sikkim's rules mean the car that drives you around Gangtok, Tsomgo and Lachung must be a Sikkim-registered vehicle with a permitted driver, while Darjeeling sightseeing uses a West Bengal car. You will therefore change vehicles once, usually at the Sikkim–Bengal border or in Gangtok. We send both drivers' names and numbers on WhatsApp the evening before each handover.

The altitude ladder: why the order of the route matters

Ahmedabad is about 50 m above sea level. Within two days of landing you can be standing at over 4,000 m at Nathu La, and that jump is what tires older travellers, not the walking. We therefore climb in steps and keep the highest days in the middle of the trip.

PlaceHeight (approx.)How it feels for most visitors from Gujarat
Siliguri / Bagdogra120 mPlains; warm and humid most of the year
Gangtok1,650 mComfortable; steep streets but escalators and lifts on MG Marg
Darjeeling2,050 mCool; slopes on the Mall make for slow walking
Pelling2,100 mQuiet; best mountain views from the hotel itself
Lachung2,700 mCold nights; basic heating; a long drive in
Yumthang Valley3,550 mThin air noticed on any climb; day visit only
Tsomgo Lake3,750 mShort visit; walk slowly around the lake
Nathu La4,300 mBreathless on stairs; not advised for heart or lung patients
  • Start in Gangtok, not at a high point: keep the first full day for local sights so bodies adjust before Tsomgo.
  • Put Lachung in the middle: by then everyone has two nights at 1,650 m behind them, and the long drive is not stacked against the flight.
  • End in Darjeeling or Pelling: gentler days, tea gardens and the toy train make a calm finish before the drive to Bagdogra.
  • Grandparents can skip the top: on the Nathu La or Zero Point day, older members can stay in Gangtok for Rumtek and the flower show, with the car returning for them.

Three Sikkim and Darjeeling itineraries for Ahmedabad travellers

7 nights / 8 days – first trip with Lachung

  • Day 1: Non-stop flight Ahmedabad–Bagdogra. Drive to Gangtok along the Teesta; dinner and an early night.
  • Day 2: Gangtok at an easy pace: Enchey Monastery, Ganesh Tok, the Flower Exhibition Centre, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, the ropeway, MG Marg in the evening.
  • Day 3: Tsomgo Lake and Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir; Nathu La if the permit is issued (Wednesday to Sunday only).
  • Day 4: Drive north to Lachung via Seven Sisters Falls and Naga Falls. Full board at a warm guesthouse.
  • Day 5: Yumthang Valley after breakfast; Zero Point optional and weather-dependent. Return to Gangtok by evening.
  • Day 6: Drive to Darjeeling via the Teesta viewpoints; walk to Chowrasta.
  • Day 7: Tiger Hill sunrise, Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop; afternoon toy train joy ride and Happy Valley tea estate.
  • Day 8: Drive to Bagdogra for the flight to Ahmedabad.

8 nights / 9 days – senior-friendly, no North Sikkim

  • Day 1: Fly to Bagdogra and drive to Darjeeling (3 hours), the shorter first-day drive.
  • Days 2–3: Darjeeling in two half days: zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (zoo closed Thursdays), Japanese Peace Pagoda, a tea-garden visit with tasting. Tiger Hill only if everyone is keen on a 4 am start.
  • Day 4: Drive to Pelling; rest.
  • Day 5: Pelling: Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse ruins, the Chenrezig statue with its skywalk, Kanchenjunga Falls. Khecheopalri Lake only if the walk suits.
  • Day 6: Drive to Gangtok via Ravangla's Buddha Park.
  • Day 7: Tsomgo Lake for those fit for the height; Rumtek and Banjhakri Falls for those who stay lower.
  • Day 8: Free day in Gangtok for shopping and rest.
  • Day 9: Drive to Bagdogra; afternoon flight home.

Every trip here is a private, customised itinerary. Large Gujarati families travel as a private group on their own dates, usually in two Innovas or a Tempo Traveller, with hotels picked so that everyone stays in the same building.

Permits for Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim in plain words

  • Who applies: the Sikkim government issues these permits only through registered tour operators and drivers. Our Gangtok partner files them for you; you cannot walk up and get one yourself.
  • Documents: a photo ID for every person, including children (Aadhaar, voter card, passport or driving licence – PAN is not accepted), and two passport photographs each. WhatsApp clear scans to us about ten days before you fly, and keep the originals in your cabin bag.
  • Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir: applied a day ahead; usually possible on most days unless snow or landslides close the road.
  • Nathu La: for Indian nationals only, and closed to tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays. Daily numbers are capped, so in Diwali and Christmas weeks we cannot promise it; Tsomgo goes ahead regardless.
  • Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point: the permit is processed in Gangtok, usually the day before. North Sikkim shuts after heavy rain or landslides, sometimes for weeks in the monsoon. We confirm the road is open when you book and recheck in the week of travel; if it closes, we move the night to Pelling or Ravangla.
  • Lachen and Gurudongmar: access has been interrupted many times since the 2023 Teesta flood. We include it only when permits are actually being issued on your dates.
  • NRIs and foreign passport holders: need a separate Sikkim permit and cannot visit Nathu La. Tell us at the enquiry stage if anyone travelling holds a foreign or OCI passport.

Diwali, May vacation and the best months from Gujarat

Two holiday windows decide when most Ahmedabad families can travel. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, and Gujarat schools usually close for about three weeks around it. That lines up well with the eastern Himalaya: the monsoon has gone, the air is clear and Kanchenjunga is visible on most mornings. The summer vacation from early May to early June is the other window, with rhododendrons in North Sikkim and relief from 44 °C afternoons at home.

  • Diwali bookings: lock hotels and the non-stop flight by August. Kolkata's Puja crowd leaves the hills by late October, but Diwali brings visitors from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, so good Gangtok hotels with lifts go early.
  • May: mornings are clear but cloud builds in the afternoon; expect fewer full Kanchenjunga views than in autumn. Book Lachung early, as rooms there are few.

Gujarati, Jain and pure-veg food in Gangtok and Darjeeling

Families from Gujarat are often surprised by how easy vegetarian food is in these hills. Both towns have long-settled Marwari trading families, and that shows in the restaurants.

  • Gangtok: several pure-veg bhojanalayas and thali restaurants around MG Marg and Lal Bazaar serve rotli, dal, sabzi and rice, and some will cook without onion and garlic if asked. Hotels that host many Gujarati guests keep a Jain menu on request.
  • Darjeeling: a handful of pure-veg restaurants near the Mall and Chowk Bazaar; hotel kitchens adjust dinners with a day's notice. Bakeries and tea rooms suit breakfast.
  • Pelling: hotel dining only, with simple Indian veg dishes. Jain food is possible but plain.
  • Lachung: fixed homestyle meals in the guesthouse. Pure-veg is easy; strict Jain needs advance notice and will be basic – rice, dal and a vegetable without root items.

We write your meal requirement – pure-veg, Jain, or no onion and garlic – on every hotel voucher, so it is not left to a phone call from the reception desk.

Packing for a Gujarati family

  • Warmer than you think: even in Diwali week, Lachung and Tsomgo drop near freezing. Thermals, a proper jacket, woollen cap, gloves and socks for each person; heavy snow coats and boots can be hired at the snow points.
  • Water bottles: Sikkim restricts packaged bottled water and single-use plastic in many places; bring refillable bottles.

Sikkim & Darjeeling tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Sikkim & Darjeeling tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Sikkim & Darjeeling packages currently start at ₹17,999 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Sikkim & Darjeeling packages fall between ₹32,499 and ₹45,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Bagdogra?

Yes. As of October 2026 Akasa Air and SpiceJet operate non-stop flights from Ahmedabad to Bagdogra on most days, taking roughly 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. On busy dates we also use one-stop flights through Kolkata or Delhi. We confirm the operating days when we quote, since airline schedules change every season.

Can I fly from Ahmedabad to Gangtok directly?

No. Pakyong airport near Gangtok has no scheduled commercial flights as of October 2026, and services there have been on and off for years. Every Sikkim trip from Ahmedabad lands at Bagdogra, about four and a half to five hours by road from Gangtok and three hours from Darjeeling.

Is there a train from Ahmedabad to New Jalpaiguri?

Yes, a few weekly long-distance trains from Gujarat to Assam stop at Ahmedabad Junction and New Jalpaiguri. The journey takes about 40 to 44 hours. Many families take the train one way and fly back. We match the NJP pick-up to the arrival time and can add a Siliguri night if the train arrives very late.

How many days should we plan for Sikkim and Darjeeling from Ahmedabad?

Six nights covers Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and Darjeeling. Seven nights adds a night in Lachung for Yumthang Valley, and eight or nine nights allow Pelling and a slower pace for grandparents. Because the flight from Ahmedabad takes most of a day with the drive, avoid anything shorter than five nights.

Is Sikkim suitable for senior citizens from Gujarat?

Yes, with the right order and pace. Gangtok, Darjeeling and Pelling sit at about 1,650 to 2,100 metres and are comfortable for most seniors. Tsomgo and Nathu La are much higher, so anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure concerns should ask their doctor first. We plan lower alternatives for that day.

Will we get Jain food in Gangtok and Darjeeling?

Mostly yes. Gangtok and Darjeeling have pure-veg restaurants run by Marwari families, and our hotels prepare Jain dinners when told in advance. In Lachung and Pelling meals are simpler and Jain food will be basic. We print your meal requirement on every voucher and suggest carrying thepla and khakhra for long drive days.

Which days is Nathu La closed?

Nathu La is closed to tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays, and it can close on other days after heavy snowfall or for security reasons. It is open only to Indian nationals and permits are capped daily. Our Gangtok partner applies a day ahead, and if Nathu La is not possible, Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir still go ahead.

Is a Diwali trip to Sikkim a good idea?

It is one of the best times. Late October and November bring clear skies and the best Kanchenjunga views after the monsoon. Demand from Gujarat is high, so book the non-stop flight and Gangtok hotels by August. Travelling after Labh Pancham is usually quieter and cheaper than the days around Diwali itself.

What documents do we need for Sikkim permits?

Each traveller, including children, needs a government photo ID such as Aadhaar, voter card, passport or driving licence, plus two passport-size photographs. PAN cards are not accepted. Send scans on WhatsApp about ten days before travel and carry the originals in your cabin bag for checkpoints on the Tsomgo and Lachung roads.

Can we see snow in Sikkim during May vacation?

Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. In May you may find leftover snow at Zero Point above Yumthang and occasionally near Nathu La, while the valley itself is covered in rhododendrons. Fresh snow at Tsomgo is most likely between December and March. We tell you the latest conditions a week before departure.

Do we need to change cars between Sikkim and Darjeeling?

Yes. Sikkim requires locally registered vehicles with permitted drivers for Gangtok, Tsomgo and North Sikkim, while Darjeeling sightseeing uses a West Bengal vehicle. We arrange both, send the drivers' details the evening before, and make the changeover at a convenient point so your luggage moves without fuss.
