Nainital and Mussoorie are the two hill stations of Uttarakhand that Ahmedabad families ask about most, and they are often treated as one trip. They are not next door to each other. Nainital sits in the Kumaon hills to the east, with Bhimtal, Ranikhet and Jim Corbett nearby; Mussoorie is in Garhwal to the west, an hour above Dehradun and close to Rishikesh and Haridwar. The road between them takes nine to ten hours. Choosing one loop, or joining both with a sensible link, is the first decision that shapes your budget and comfort.

This page is written for travellers leaving from Ahmedabad. It covers per-person costs for each loop, the flights to Delhi and Dehradun and the direct train to Haridwar, why Pantnagar and Kathgodam matter for Nainital, day-wise plans for the Kumaon loop, the Garhwal loop and the combined trip, the school-vacation crowds that clog Mall Road, Corbett's zone calendar, and how easy Gujarati and Jain food is in each town. Packages listed here show live prices. Every trip is private: your dates, your own car and driver, and a pace set by your family.

Getting there from Ahmedabad, extra: return airfare to Delhi usually runs ₹6,000 – 11,000 per person and to Dehradun ₹8,000 – 14,000 when booked four to six weeks ahead. Fares climb for the May vacation, Diwali and the Christmas week. A 3AC berth on the train to Haridwar costs far less, if you book the day reservations open.

Paid locally unless you want them included: Naini Lake boating, the Snow View ropeway in Nainital, the Gun Hill ropeway and Kempty Falls entry in Mussoorie, Corbett jeep safari (permit, vehicle and guide), river rafting in Rishikesh, the Surkanda Devi ropeway near Dhanaulti, pony rides and lunches. Each appears on your quote with a current estimate.

What makes one quote higher than another: a lake-view room on the Mall in Nainital or a hotel walking distance from Mussoorie's Library end costs much more than a property 3 km out, where you rely on the car in traffic. Corbett resorts on the Kosi river near Dhikuli also carry a premium over those in Ramnagar town.

How to get from Ahmedabad to Nainital and Mussoorie

Flights from SVPI (AMD)

  • Ahmedabad – Delhi (DEL): many non-stop flights a day, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Delhi suits a Nainital trip (about 310 km, 7–8 hours by road) and gives the widest choice of timings and fares.
  • Ahmedabad – Dehradun (DED, Jolly Grant): IndiGo operates non-stop flights several days a week as of October 2026, in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Jolly Grant is the best gateway for Mussoorie (about 60 km, 2 hours), Rishikesh (35–40 minutes) and Haridwar (about 1 hour).
  • Pantnagar (PGH): the closest airport to Nainital, about 65 km and 2 hours away, but it is small with limited flights, mostly from Delhi, and no non-stop from Ahmedabad. We use it only when a Delhi–Pantnagar connection fits your schedule.

Trains from Ahmedabad

  • To Haridwar: the daily Yoga Express starts from Sabarmati and runs to Haridwar and on to Yog Nagari Rishikesh in about 24–26 hours. It is the most direct rail link for the Mussoorie side; from Haridwar station Mussoorie is about 2½–3 hours by car.
  • To Dehradun: the weekly Okha–Dehradun Uttaranchal Express no longer runs through Ahmedabad; Mahesana and Palanpur are the nearest stops for Ahmedabad families.
  • To Kathgodam: there is no convenient through train from Ahmedabad. The usual plan is a flight or train to Delhi, then the overnight Ranikhet Express or a day train to Kathgodam, from where Nainital is only about 35 km, a little over an hour uphill.

Distances inside Uttarakhand

Kathgodam – Nainital1 – 1¼ hours

Nainital – Ranikhetabout 2 hours
Nainital – Jim Corbett (Ramnagar)about 2 hours
Corbett – Haridwar5 – 6 hours
Dehradun – Mussoorie1 – 1½ hours
Mussoorie – Dhanaultiabout 1 hour
Rishikesh – Haridwar45 minutes – 1 hour

Kumaon or Garhwal: which loop suits your family

  • Nainital loop (Kumaon): a lake town with boating, the Naina Devi temple and ropeway views, plus the quieter lakes of Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal. Add Ranikhet for pine forests and the army cantonment, Mukteshwar for Himalayan views, Kainchi Dham for the Neem Karoli Baba ashram, and Jim Corbett for a tiger-reserve safari. Best for families with children who enjoy water and wildlife.
  • Mussoorie loop (Garhwal): the Mall Road, Gun Hill, Kempty Falls, Landour's quiet lanes and the Dhanaulti forests, paired with Rishikesh and Haridwar. Best for families who want a spiritual element – the evening Ganga aarti, a dip at the ghats – alongside the hill station.
  • Both (8–9 nights): fly into Delhi for Nainital and out of Dehradun after Mussoorie, linking the two through Corbett and Haridwar so that no single drive exceeds about six hours.

For grandparents, the Mussoorie side has the edge: shorter drive from the airport, flat ghats in Haridwar and Rishikesh, and ropeways that replace climbs. In Nainital, stay on or near the Mall so the lake promenade is a short walk.

Extended families from Ahmedabad often travel as a private group on their own dates in a Tempo Traveller, with rooms on the same floor and Jain dinners arranged ahead.

School vacation crowds and Corbett zones

From mid-May to the third week of June, Nainital and Mussoorie are among the busiest hill towns in North India. Gujarat's summer break overlaps with holidays in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, and both Mall Roads become slow-moving on weekends. Police regularly divert vehicles to parking areas outside Nainital on peak days, with shuttles into town, and the Mussoorie road from Dehradun backs up near Kempty Falls.

  • Travel midweek: arrive on a Sunday or Monday and leave before Friday evening; the difference in traffic is large.
  • Stay central: a hotel within walking distance of the Mall saves hours sitting in the car.
  • Use the shoulder weeks: the first week of May and the last week of June are cooler at home than you expect and calmer in the hills.
  • Diwali: Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Gujarat schools usually break for about three weeks around it. Clear skies, crisp mornings and Himalayan views make this an excellent window, with fewer crowds than May.

Gujarati and Jain food, and tips for the trip

  • Haridwar and Rishikesh: the easiest food stop of the entire trip. Both towns are vegetarian by local custom, with Gujarati thalis, dhabas and ashram kitchens; many places cook without onion and garlic.
  • Mussoorie: several pure-veg restaurants on the Mall Road serve Gujarati and Rajasthani thalis, and hotels adapt dinners for Jain guests with notice.
  • Nainital: plenty of vegetarian restaurants along the Mall and near the Tallital end; Jain meals are possible in most hotels when booked ahead.
  • Corbett: resorts serve buffets with vegetarian sections and cook Jain meals separately when told in advance. Simple choice on safari mornings – carry snacks.

Your meal plan is written on every hotel voucher. Carry thepla and khakhra for the Delhi–Nainital and Corbett–Haridwar drives, where highway stops are mixed.

Practical notes

  • Pack a warm jacket even in May for the evenings; from November to February, thermals, caps and gloves.
  • Hill roads wind for the last hour into both towns – motion-sickness tablets before the climb help children and grandparents.
  • Uttarakhand temples such as Naina Devi and Mansa Devi have long queues on festival days; go early in the morning.
  • Carry ID for every traveller: Corbett permits, ropeways and hotel check-ins all ask for it.

Nainital & Mussoorie tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Nainital & Mussoorie tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Nainital & Mussoorie packages currently start at ₹17,000 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Nainital & Mussoorie packages fall between ₹25,000 and ₹40,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Dehradun?

Yes. As of October 2026 IndiGo flies non-stop from Ahmedabad to Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport several days a week, in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Jolly Grant is about two hours from Mussoorie and under an hour from Rishikesh and Haridwar. On other days we route you through Delhi.

How do we reach Nainital from Ahmedabad?

Most families fly to Delhi, about 1 hour 45 minutes, and drive roughly 310 km to Nainital in seven to eight hours. Another option is Delhi to Kathgodam by train, then an hour by road. Pantnagar airport is closer but has few flights and none non-stop from Ahmedabad.

Is there a direct train from Ahmedabad to Haridwar?

Yes. The daily Yoga Express runs from Sabarmati in Ahmedabad to Haridwar and on to Yog Nagari Rishikesh, taking about 24 to 26 hours. From Haridwar station Mussoorie is around two and a half to three hours by car. Book on the day reservations open for May and Diwali dates.

Can we cover Nainital and Mussoorie in one trip?

Yes, but allow eight or nine nights. The two towns are nine to ten hours apart by road, so we link them through Jim Corbett and Haridwar, flying into Delhi for Nainital and out of Dehradun after Mussoorie. With five or six nights, choose one loop instead.

Which is better for a family from Ahmedabad, Nainital or Mussoorie?

Nainital suits families who want lake boating, several small lakes nearby and a Corbett safari. Mussoorie suits those who want a shorter airport drive and a spiritual side trip to Rishikesh and Haridwar. Seniors usually find the Mussoorie and Haridwar loop slightly easier.

Are Nainital and Mussoorie crowded in May?

Yes. Mid-May to mid-June is peak season, with summer holidays across North and West India. Weekends bring heavy traffic and parking diversions in Nainital. Arrive midweek, stay close to the Mall Road and book hotels by March for the best rooms and fair prices.

Is Jim Corbett open during Diwali?

Yes. Jhirna, Dhela and Garjiya zones are open through the year, and Bijrani usually reopens in mid-October. Dhikala, the core zone with forest rest houses, normally opens on 15 November, so it may open just after Diwali week. Safari permits are limited daily, so share ID details early.

Will we get Jain and Gujarati food in Nainital and Mussoorie?

Yes. Both Mall Roads have pure-veg restaurants serving Gujarati and Rajasthani thalis, and our hotels cook Jain meals with notice. Haridwar and Rishikesh are vegetarian towns, so food is easiest there. We print your meal preference on every hotel voucher.

Does it snow in Nainital and Mussoorie?

Light snowfall happens in some winters, usually between late December and February, in Nainital, Mussoorie and especially Dhanaulti. It is not guaranteed and may last only a day. If snow is the main goal, we suggest Auli or a Himachal trip instead, or a flexible January plan.

How many days are ideal for a Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar trip?

Five nights works well: three in Mussoorie including a Dhanaulti day, one in Rishikesh and one in Haridwar for the evening Ganga aarti. Families flying the non-stop to Dehradun reach Mussoorie the same afternoon, so no day is lost to travel at the start.

Is a Nainital trip safe in the monsoon?

It is possible, but July and August bring heavy rain and occasional landslides on the hill roads, which can delay drives. Views are often lost in cloud. For a first trip with children or seniors, we recommend March to June or late September to November instead.
