Packages from₹12,000 per person
Best timeMarch to June for pleasant weather; late December to February for snow chances
Ideal trip3–4 nights Shimla, or 6 nights with Manali
From AhmedabadNon-stop to Chandigarh about 1 h 45 min, then 3½–4 h by car
Good forSenior citizens, families, first hill holiday, honeymoon

Shimla is often the first mountain holiday a Gujarati family takes, and it is a good one to start with. The town sits at about 2,200 m on a ridge above deodar forest, roughly 115 km from Chandigarh airport, so you can be on the Mall Road on the day after you leave Ahmedabad without a single overnight bus. Three or four nights cover Shimla, Kufri and a day out to Chail or Narkanda; six nights let you add Manali. Unlike Manali, Shimla is a town built for walking, with a car-free Mall Road, colonial buildings and the toy train – which makes it especially popular with parents and grandparents, provided the slopes are planned for.

This page is for travellers starting from Ahmedabad. It gives realistic package costs by trip length and hotel class, how the current Ahmedabad–Chandigarh flight timings shape the first and last day, train options including the Kalka–Shimla toy train, three day-wise itineraries, a month-by-month guide with Gujarat's Diwali and summer vacation dates, advice for senior citizens on Shimla's steep lanes, and the food details that matter. The packages listed show live prices.

Shimla package price guide from Ahmedabad (2026)

Our Himachal packages that include Shimla currently start at ₹12,000 per person, across 24 packages. The table shows the usual per-person band on twin sharing, excluding flights or train from Ahmedabad, with hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a private car for all transfers and sightseeing. Figures are indicative and checked against current hotel rates.

TripStandard (3★)Deluxe (4★)Premium (5★ / heritage)

Extra on the ground: toy-train tickets (modest in ordinary class, higher for the chair-car and vistadome coaches), the Jakhu ropeway, pony or yak rides at Kufri, the Himalayan Nature Park entry, Viceregal Lodge tickets, ice skating in season, snow clothes and ski lessons at Narkanda, lunches and tips. Your quote lists each as a separate line.

Why the bands are wide: a three-star hotel on Cart Road and a heritage property a short walk from the Ridge are very different stays; Christmas–New Year and the May vacation weeks run 25–40% above March or September; and an Innova costs more than a sedan but is far kinder on hill roads with four adults and luggage.

Flights from Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad–Chandigarh return fares are usually ₹9,000–15,000 per person booked four to six weeks ahead, and higher for the Diwali and May vacation dates. Connecting via Delhi is sometimes cheaper and gives more timing choices. We book flights with the package so the car is waiting when you land.

How to reach Shimla from Ahmedabad

Fly to Chandigarh (most of our clients)

As of October 2026, IndiGo flies non-stop from SVPI Airport to Chandigarh once a day, about 1 hour 45 minutes. The outbound flight leaves Ahmedabad in the evening and lands at night, and the non-stop flight back leaves Chandigarh in the late afternoon and reaches Ahmedabad around 7.30 pm. Schedules change, but this pattern matters for planning:

  • Day 1 is a travel evening: we book a hotel in Chandigarh or Zirakpur, 15–20 minutes from the airport, rather than driving the hills at midnight.
  • Day 2 starts fresh: a morning drive of 3½–4 hours up the four-lane highway via Pinjore and Parwanoo, or the toy train from Kalka.
  • The last day works well: leave Shimla after breakfast and reach Chandigarh comfortably for the afternoon flight.

If you prefer to arrive in Shimla on day one, fly a morning flight to Delhi and connect to Chandigarh, or drive from Delhi (about 350 km, 7–8 hours).

Shimla's own airport

Jubbarhatti airport is about 22 km from town, with small-aircraft flights, mainly from Delhi, run by Alliance Air. The airstrip is short and services are often affected by weather and payload limits, so we treat it as a bonus, never the plan for seniors or anyone with a fixed return.

By train

  • Ahmedabad–Chandigarh: a daily express that starts at Gandhinagar Capital and calls at Ahmedabad reaches Chandigarh the next morning, about 21–22 hours (as of October 2026). From Chandigarh it is 30 minutes by road to Kalka, or 3½–4 hours to Shimla.
  • Via Delhi: overnight trains from Ahmedabad reach Delhi in 13–16 hours; the morning Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kalka is usually timed to connect with a midday toy train to Shimla.

The Kalka–Shimla toy train

The 96 km narrow-gauge line, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Mountain Railways of India, climbs through about 100 tunnels and hundreds of bridges in 5–6 hours, with a tea halt at Barog. It is slow and that is the point. Book seats on IRCTC as soon as dates are fixed – the morning trains sell out in May and October. We send your luggage up by car, so you travel light and the car meets you at Shimla station. For children who get restless, we suggest taking the train only for the Kalka–Barog or Barog–Shimla stretch and driving the rest.

Three Shimla itineraries from Ahmedabad

4 nights / 5 days – Shimla with the toy train (families and seniors)

  • Day 1: Evening flight Ahmedabad–Chandigarh; night in Chandigarh or Zirakpur.
  • Day 2: Short drive to Kalka; toy train to Shimla while your luggage goes by car. Evening on the Ridge and Scandal Point.
  • Day 3: Kufri (Himalayan Nature Park, pony ride to Mahasu Peak for those who want it), Fagu viewpoint, and Mashobra's apple orchards. Return for dinner.
  • Day 4: Jakhu Temple by ropeway, Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre, the Viceregal Lodge lawns; Lakkar Bazaar for wooden souvenirs.
  • Day 5: Drive to Chandigarh (stop at Pinjore Gardens if time allows) for the afternoon flight home.

5 nights / 6 days – Chail, Shimla and Narkanda (honeymoon or second visit)

  • Day 1: Fly to Chandigarh; overnight near the airport.
  • Day 2: Drive to Chail (about 3 hours via Kandaghat). The Maharaja of Patiala's palace, the high-altitude cricket ground and deodar walks; one of the quietest nights in Himachal.
  • Day 3: Chail to Shimla (45 km). Afternoon and evening on the Mall Road; candle-light dinner.
  • Day 4: Drive to Narkanda (about 2½ hours) through Theog and apple orchards. Hatu Peak and its wooden temple at about 3,400 m; snow in winter, wildflowers in spring. Night in Narkanda.
  • Day 5: Drive down to Kasauli (about 5 hours with stops). Sunset at Gilbert Trail or Sunset Point.
  • Day 6: Kasauli to Chandigarh (about 1½ hours) for the flight.

6 nights / 7 days – Shimla and Manali with a slower start

  • Day 1: Fly to Chandigarh; night near the airport.
  • Days 2–3: Drive to Shimla; Kufri, Mall Road and Jakhu over two relaxed days.
  • Day 4: Shimla to Manali via Tattapani hot springs on the Sutlej or via Mandi and Pandoh Dam (about 8 hours with halts; we break it at lunch and tea).
  • Days 5–6: Manali: Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu when open, Hadimba Temple and Old Manali.
  • Day 7: Drive Manali–Chandigarh (8–9 hours) for an evening connection, or add a night in Chandigarh for a calmer exit.

For the Manali half in detail, see Manali tour packages from Ahmedabad. Every itinerary is private and customised: your own car and driver, your own dates, and day plans we change on the spot for weather.

Shimla for senior citizens: slopes, the lift and where to stay

Shimla's charm is also its difficulty. The Mall Road and the Ridge are closed to private vehicles, and the town is built on steep lanes. Most complaints we hear from parents about other trips come down to a hotel that "was on Mall Road" but needed a 15-minute climb. How we plan it:

  • Hotel with car access: for seniors we choose properties where the car can reach the door, on Cart Road, near the Lift, or on the Circular Road, rather than hotels reachable only on foot.
  • The Mall Road lift: a public lift near the Cart Road taxi stand takes you up to the Mall level for a small fee, avoiding the steepest stretch. Queues build on summer evenings, so go before 5 pm.
  • Jakhu Temple: take the ropeway rather than the steep footpath; mind the monkeys and keep spectacles and bags zipped.
  • Kufri: the pony track to Mahasu Peak is rough and muddy; seniors can enjoy the view from the lower area and the nature park instead.
  • Altitude: at about 2,200 m, Shimla causes no altitude problems for healthy travellers, but carry regular medicines, and a light walking stick helps on wet slopes.
  • Toy train: seats are narrow and toilets are basic; book the vistadome or chair-car class and limit the ride to part of the route if needed.

Best time to visit Shimla from Ahmedabad: month by month

Snow honesty: Shimla town gets a few snowfalls in most winters, usually between late December and February, but no one can promise snow on fixed dates. Kufri and Narkanda, higher up, are more reliable; if snow is the main goal, add a night at Narkanda or plan Manali's Solang and Sissu as well. See our snow holiday packages.

Gujarat school dates are taken from the Gujarat board academic calendar 2026–27 as announced in May 2026; private and CBSE schools may differ slightly.

Day trips and stays around Shimla

  • Kufri (16 km): the classic family day out – pony rides, the Himalayan Nature Park with Himalayan birds and animals, and snow play in winter.
  • Mashobra and Naldehra (12–22 km): apple orchards and pine forest; Naldehra's nine-hole golf course is among the oldest in India.
  • Chail (about 45 km): a former royal summer retreat with a palace hotel and a cricket ground among the highest in the world; ideal for a quiet night.
  • Narkanda and Hatu Peak (about 65 km): apple country, skiing in January–February and wide views of the high Himalaya.
  • Tattapani (about 50 km): sulphur hot springs on the Sutlej and gentle river rafting in season.
  • Kasauli (about 70 km): a small cantonment hill town 1½ hours from Chandigarh, good for the first or last night of the trip.
  • Sarahan: the Bhimakali temple, for travellers heading towards Kinnaur in summer; a full day's drive each way.

Food and practical tips for Gujarati travellers in Shimla

Veg and Jain food

Shimla is an easy town for vegetarians. The Mall Road and Lower Bazaar have several pure-veg restaurants serving North Indian and Gujarati thalis, and a couple will make Jain food on request. Hotels prepare Jain breakfast and dinner with a day's notice, and we print the requirement on your hotel vouchers. Try the Himachali dham, a vegetarian festive meal of rice, rajma, madra (chickpeas in yoghurt) and meetha bhaat. On Kufri and Narkanda days, carry theplas or packed snacks; roadside choice is mostly maggi and parathas.

Practical points

  • Shimla bans plastic bags and fines littering and smoking in public places on the Mall Road.
  • Pack layers: even in May, evenings drop to 14–15°C. From December to February, carry thermals, gloves and shoes with grip for icy lanes.
  • Motion sickness is common on the Chandigarh–Shimla road; sit in front, eat lightly and carry medicine.
  • Mobile data works well in Shimla town; patchy around Chail and Narkanda.
  • Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study) runs guided tours at fixed times and closes on some days; we check before the visit.

Shimla tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Shimla tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Shimla packages currently start at ₹12,000 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Shimla packages fall between ₹21,999 and ₹42,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Shimla?

No. As of October 2026 there is no flight between Ahmedabad and Shimla. Most travellers fly non-stop to Chandigarh in about 1 hour 45 minutes and drive 3½ to 4 hours to Shimla. Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport has small, weather-dependent flights mainly from Delhi, so we do not rely on it.

How many days are enough for Shimla from Ahmedabad?

Three nights covers Shimla town and Kufri; four nights adds the toy train and a relaxed first night in Chandigarh after the evening flight. Five nights lets you include Chail and Narkanda. With six or seven nights you can combine Shimla with Manali comfortably.

What time does the Ahmedabad to Chandigarh flight land?

As of October 2026 the one non-stop IndiGo flight leaves Ahmedabad in the evening and lands in Chandigarh at night, so we book the first night near the airport and drive to Shimla next morning. Flights via Delhi offer daytime arrivals if you prefer. Airline schedules change, and we check them when booking.

Is the Kalka to Shimla toy train worth it?

Yes, once. The 96 km UNESCO-listed line takes 5 to 6 hours through about 100 tunnels with a halt at Barog. Families with small children or seniors who tire easily can ride only part of the way. Book on IRCTC as soon as dates are fixed, especially for May and October.

When does it snow in Shimla?

Shimla town usually gets a few snowfalls between late December and February, but snow on specific dates cannot be promised. Kufri and Narkanda, which are higher, see more reliable snow. If snow is the main reason for your trip, add Narkanda or Manali to the itinerary.

Is Shimla good for senior citizens?

Yes, with the right hotel. The Mall Road is closed to cars and the lanes are steep, so we choose hotels that cars can reach and use the public lift up to the Mall and the ropeway to Jakhu Temple. One drive a day and an early dinner keep the pace comfortable.

Shimla or Manali: which is better for a first trip?

Shimla is better for a relaxed, walkable hill town with colonial sights, the toy train and short drives, and suits seniors. Manali has more snow and adventure at Solang and Sissu. Most first-time families from Ahmedabad do both in six or seven nights, starting with Shimla.

Can we get Jain and Gujarati food in Shimla?

Yes. Several pure-veg restaurants on the Mall Road and in Lower Bazaar serve Gujarati and North Indian thalis, and some make Jain food on request. Our hotels prepare Jain breakfast and dinner with notice, and the meal plan is printed on your vouchers.

Can we travel from Ahmedabad to Shimla by train?

Yes. A daily express from Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad reaches Chandigarh the next morning in about 21 to 22 hours, and from there Kalka is 30 minutes by road for the toy train. You can also take an overnight train to Delhi and the Kalka Shatabdi, which connects with a midday toy train.

Is Shimla a good choice for the Diwali vacation?

Yes. Late October and November bring clear skies, crisp 5 to 18 degree weather and good Himalayan views from Kufri and Narkanda. The Gujarat Diwali vacation runs from 5 to 25 November 2026, and Diwali week is the busiest, so book hotels and flights early.

Is a Shimla package private or a group tour?

Every Vibrant Holidays trip is private and customised: your own car and driver, your own dates and hotels you choose. Extended families and friends can travel together as a private group on their own dates, with a Tempo Traveller or two cars.
