The Ujjain circuit is among the cheapest trips we sell; tiger safaris are the most expensive part of any Madhya Pradesh holiday because each jeep permit, guide and gate fee is charged per safari. The bands below are per person on twin sharing with breakfast and a private car, excluding travel from Ahmedabad; safari packages include two jeep safaris.

Add for travel from Ahmedabad: 3AC train fares to Ujjain or Indore are about ₹900–1,400 per person; Ahmedabad–Indore flights ₹3,000–6,000 one way; Ahmedabad–Nagpur (for Pench and Kanha) ₹4,500–8,000; Jabalpur and Khajuraho are usually reached via Delhi or Mumbai. How to reach Madhya Pradesh from Ahmedabad

• Our usual plan for the Ujjain circuit: overnight train Ahmedabad–Ujjain, two or three days in a private Innova, and the return train from Indore – or a car from your doorstep in Ahmedabad for a family of four to six, which is often cheaper than six train tickets and gives you Mandu on the way.
• Senior groups: we add a night in Indore to break the journey and keep each day to one Jyotirlinga.
• Safari circuits: plan Pench from Nagpur, and Kanha or Bandhavgarh from Jabalpur; Kanha and Bandhavgarh together need a 5-hour transfer between them.

Best Madhya Pradesh itineraries from Ahmedabad

2 nights / 3 days – Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Indore (Jyotirlinga darshan)

• Day 1: Arrive Ujjain by overnight train or morning drive. Mahakaleshwar darshan, Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani ashram; evening Shipra aarti at Ram ghat. Early night – Bhasma Aarti is at 4 am.
• Day 2: Bhasma Aarti (pre-registered), breakfast, drive to Omkareshwar (about 3 h). Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga darshan, optional Narmada parikrama of the island (about 7 km) or boat ride; drive to Indore (2 h). Dinner at Sarafa Bazaar's night food street.
• Day 3: Indore – Khajrana Ganesh, Rajwada, Lal Bagh palace, Chappan Dukan; afternoon train or flight to Ahmedabad.

3 nights / 4 days – Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Mandu (family)

• Day 1–2: as above, ending in Omkareshwar for the night instead of Indore.
• Day 3: Drive to Maheshwar (1½ h) – Ahilya fort, Narmada ghats, boat ride, Maheshwari sari weavers; on to Mandu (1 h) for Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal and Roopmati's pavilion at sunset; back to Indore (2½ h) or stay in Mandu.
• Day 4: Indore sightseeing and food, return to Ahmedabad.

6 nights / 7 days – complete Madhya Pradesh with a tiger safari

• Day 1–2: Ujjain and Omkareshwar.
• Day 3: Drive to Bhopal (4 h) via Sanchi stupas; Upper Lake sunset.
• Day 4: Bhimbetka rock shelters and Bhojpur's Bhojeshwar temple in the morning; afternoon drive or train to Jabalpur (5–6 h); Bhedaghat marble rocks boat ride if time permits.
• Day 5: Drive to Kanha or Bandhavgarh (3½–4 h), afternoon safari.
• Day 6: Morning safari, rest, optional evening nature walk or tribal village visit.
• Day 7: Drive to Jabalpur, fly home via Delhi or Mumbai. Travellers with two more nights add Khajuraho (5–6 h from Bandhavgarh) and Orchha.

Heritage lovers: 4 nights Khajuraho, Orchha and Gwalior

Two nights in Khajuraho for the western and eastern temple groups, the sound-and-light show and a Raneh falls or Panna safari half-day; drive to Orchha (3½ h) for the Betwa riverside, Jahangir Mahal and Ram Raja temple; and a night in Gwalior for the fort, Jai Vilas palace and Tansen's tomb, flying or training home from Gwalior.

Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti – how to register, what to wear, when to arrive

The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar is the reason most Gujarati pilgrims come to Ujjain, and the single most common question we get. Here is the process as it works today; rules change from time to time, so we re-confirm before every trip.

1. Register online. Permits are issued free through the Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir Samiti's official website in limited numbers, against a photo ID for every person (including children). Registration usually opens a few days before the date and slots go within minutes, so we apply the moment they open. A limited number of offline permits are also issued at the temple counter the previous day on a first-come basis.
2. Dress code. To enter the Nandi Hall for the aarti, men wear a dhoti (sola) with bare upper body or a shawl, and women wear a saree. Those not in this dress watch from the outer area. Dhotis and sarees are available for hire near the temple if you do not carry them.
3. Timing. The aarti begins at about 4 am and lasts about two hours; entry gates open around 2:30–3 am and you should be in line by 3 am with your permit printout and the matching ID. Book a hotel within a short drive of the temple – we do this by default.
4. Rules. No mobile phones, cameras or bags inside; lockers are available. Water and a shawl for the early-morning chill are sensible.
5. If you miss the permit. Regular darshan runs through the day and is itself a moving experience; a shighra darshan ticket (a nominal paid line) cuts the queue, and the evening Shipra aarti at Ram ghat is a good alternative ritual to attend.
6. Crowd days. Mondays, Shravan month (usually July–August), Mahashivratri (usually February–March) and Nag Panchami bring very large crowds; a Tuesday to Thursday visit is far more comfortable.

Simhastha 2028: Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela once in twelve years; the next is expected in April–May 2028. It will be the largest religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh's history and hotel supply will be impossible at short notice – if you want to attend, speak to us in 2027.

Kanha, Bandhavgarh or Pench – which tiger reserve should you choose?

Two safaris (one afternoon, one morning) are the minimum; three or four give a realistic chance of a tiger at Bandhavgarh or Kanha. Satpura (near Pachmarhi) and Panna (near Khajuraho) are quieter reserves that combine well with those circuits.

Best time to visit Madhya Pradesh – month by month

For Gujarati families, Diwali week and the long weekends of October–March are the natural time for the Ujjain circuit. For a tiger, choose March–April and book permits two months ahead. Keep April–May 2028 in mind for Simhastha.

• Ujjain: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and its Bhasma Aarti, Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani ashram and the Shipra ghats – one of the seven moksha-puris.
• Omkareshwar: the Jyotirlinga on an Om-shaped island in the Narmada, with Mamleshwar on the opposite bank and a 7-km island parikrama.
• Maheshwar: Ahilyabai Holkar's fort and ghats on the Narmada, Maheshwari saris and a boat ride at sunset.
• Mandu: Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal and Roopmati's pavilion on a plateau above the Narmada valley – spectacular in the monsoon.
• Indore: Khajrana Ganesh, Rajwada, Lal Bagh palace and the Sarafa and Chappan Dukan food streets of India's cleanest city.
• Bhopal, Sanchi and Bhimbetka: the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi, prehistoric rock paintings at Bhimbetka and the unfinished Bhojeshwar temple.
• Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench: three of India's finest tiger reserves, with Satpura and Panna as quieter alternatives.
• Khajuraho: the UNESCO-listed Chandela temples, the evening sound-and-light show and Raneh falls nearby.
• Orchha: Bundela palaces and chhatris on the Betwa, the Ram Raja temple where Ram is worshipped as king, and river rafting.
• Gwalior: the hilltop fort, Sas-Bahu temples, Jai Vilas palace and Tansen's tomb.
• Pachmarhi: Dhoopgarh sunset point, Bee falls, Jata Shankar and Pandav caves in the Satpura hills.
• Bhedaghat: marble rocks and Dhuandhar falls on the Narmada near Jabalpur; boating on a full-moon night is unforgettable.

Food, hotels and tips for Gujarati travellers

• Pure-veg and Jain food: the Ujjain–Indore belt is a vegetarian heaven – Indore has a large Jain community, Gujarati thalis, Jain-friendly poha-jalebi and Sarafa snacks, and Ujjain's temple-town restaurants are all vegetarian with Jain options. Omkareshwar and Maheshwar are simple but fully vegetarian. Safari lodges at Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench cook to order and we confirm pure-veg or Jain menus in writing. Khajuraho and Orchha have Indian restaurants that manage Jain meals with a day's notice.
• Hotel categories: Ujjain has good 3-star hotels within a few minutes of Mahakaleshwar and a handful of 4-star; Indore has full 4- and 5-star choice; Omkareshwar and Maheshwar offer heritage and riverside stays plus simpler guesthouses; safari lodges range from comfortable 3-star resorts to luxury camps with a naturalist. Khajuraho has several 5-star properties; Orchha has riverside resorts and a heritage palace hotel.
• Pack: dhoti and saree for Bhasma Aarti (or hire locally), a shawl for 4 am, neutral-coloured clothes and a warm jacket for winter safaris, binoculars, sunscreen and a hat for summer drives.
• Money and connectivity: UPI works in towns and temple shops; carry cash for boats, safari tips and village stalls. Signal is weak inside the reserves and parts of Mandu.
• Timings to remember: Bhasma Aarti at 4 am with permit; tiger reserve cores closed July–September and Wednesday afternoons; Khajuraho temples open sunrise to sunset; Mandu monuments close at sunset.
• Driving from Ahmedabad: the Godhra–Dahod–Jhabua road to Indore is good; leave Ahmedabad by 6 am to reach Ujjain for the evening aarti.
