Good forFamilies, seniors, honeymoon, second South India trip

Coorg and Ooty is the South India holiday for families who have already done Kerala, or who want cool hills without a long flight north. In one week you can stay in a coffee-estate cottage in Coorg, see the Tibetan Golden Temple at Bylakuppe, spend an evening at the illuminated Mysuru Palace, drive through the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests, and ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Coonoor and Ooty. It works well for Gujarati families because the drives are short, Mysuru and Ooty have plenty of vegetarian food, and the weather suits a Diwali or May vacation trip.

The trip is shaped by geography rather than by the flight. Coorg is in Karnataka, Ooty is in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, and the natural loop starts at Bengaluru and ends at Coimbatore, or the other way round. This guide covers flights from SVPI Airport, a road distance table, the Ooty e-pass rule for vehicles, how to fit the toy train into the plan, three itineraries, month-by-month weather and the food reality in each stop.

Coorg Ooty package prices from Ahmedabad (2026)

Our live Karnataka and Tamil Nadu hill packages start at ₹13,500 per person, with 24 on sale today. The bands below are per person on twin sharing, excluding flights from Ahmedabad. They include hotels or estate stays with breakfast, a private AC car with driver for the whole loop, sightseeing as per itinerary, tolls, parking and the driver's allowances.

TripStandard (3-star / homestay)Deluxe (4-star / estate resort)Premium (luxury plantation resort / heritage)
4 nights Mysuru + Coorg₹13,500 – 17,500₹19,000 – 25,000₹34,000 – 52,000
5 nights Mysuru + Coorg + Ooty₹17,000 – 22,000₹24,000 – 31,000₹42,000 – 64,000
6 nights adds Coonoor₹20,000 – 26,000₹28,000 – 37,000₹50,000 – 76,000
7 nights adds a Kabini or Bandipur jungle stay₹26,000 – 34,000₹36,000 – 48,000₹65,000 – 1,00,000

What changes the price: Coorg is where the gap is widest. A clean homestay near Madikeri and a resort with an infinity pool above a coffee valley can differ by ₹15,000 a night. Jungle lodges near Kabini include safaris and all meals, which is why the 7-night line jumps. An Innova Crysta instead of a sedan adds roughly ₹2,000–3,000 per day to the car cost, but is worth it for five or more people.

Not included unless stated: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway ticket, Mysuru Palace entry, Dubare elephant camp activities, jeep safaris at Bandipur or Mudumalai, Ooty boat rides, lunches and dinners outside the meal plan, and the Nilgiris green tax collected at the checkpost.

Flights from Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad–Bengaluru non-stop return fares typically fall between ₹8,000 and ₹15,000 per person when booked a month ahead. Flying home from Coimbatore costs a similar amount on the non-stop days, and a little more with a connection.

Getting there: flights, trains and the best way in

By air from SVPI Airport

  • Ahmedabad – Bengaluru (BLR): several non-stop flights a day, about 2 hours. Kempegowda airport is north of Bengaluru, so allow 3½–4 hours to Mysuru by road, or start the trip with a night in Mysuru.
  • Ahmedabad – Coimbatore (CJB): IndiGo started a non-stop service in late 2025 on a few days a week, about 2½ hours, with an evening departure from Ahmedabad. On other days the route connects via Bengaluru, Mumbai or Chennai. Coimbatore is the closest airport to Ooty, about 3 hours away.
  • Mysuru (MYQ): a small airport with limited connections; there is no non-stop from Ahmedabad, so it rarely saves time.
  • Best pattern: fly into Bengaluru and out of Coimbatore (or reverse). It avoids driving back the full loop and saves a day. If the Coimbatore non-stop does not suit your dates, we route the return through Bengaluru instead.

By train

Ahmedabad has weekly and bi-weekly trains towards Bengaluru and Coimbatore from Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur), taking roughly 30–40 hours. They suit larger families travelling on a budget or seniors who dislike flying, but they cost two days of holiday each way. A common compromise is flying one way and taking the train the other.

Road distances inside the loop

RouteDistance (about)Drive time (about)Road note
Bengaluru airport – Mysuru180 km3½–4 hoursBengaluru–Mysuru expressway after the city
Bengaluru city – Mysuru145 km2½–3 hoursFast on the expressway; stop at Srirangapatna en route
Mysuru – Coorg (Madikeri)120 km3 hoursVia Kushalnagar and Bylakuppe
Coorg (Madikeri) – Ooty240–260 km6½–7½ hoursBack through Mysuru or Hunsur, then Bandipur and Mudumalai forests
Mysuru – Ooty125 km3½–4 hoursForest roads closed at night; steep Kalhatti ghat with 36 hairpins
Ooty – Coonoor19 km45 minutesOr by toy train
Ooty – Coimbatore airport90 km2½–3 hoursDown the Mettupalayam ghat

The forest stretch through Bandipur and Mudumalai is closed to most traffic at night, usually from 9 pm to 6 am, to protect wildlife. Coorg to Ooty is therefore a daytime drive, and we break it with lunch in Mysuru or Gundlupet.

The Ooty e-pass and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

E-pass for vehicles entering the Nilgiris

Since May 2024, following directions from the Madras High Court, tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris district (Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri) need an e-pass from the Tamil Nadu government portal. Vehicles registered in the district, government buses and essential services are exempt. Daily caps have been applied, reported at about 6,000 vehicles on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends, with passes issued first come, first served. The pass itself is free; the green tax is paid separately at the checkpost.

  • For our packages the driver or the car operator applies for the e-pass in the vehicle's name with your travel and hotel details. You do not need to do anything, but we need the final dates and hotel names early.
  • On long weekends and in May the cap can be reached. Booking hotels and the car early, and entering on a weekday, avoids the risk.
  • Rules have been revised several times since 2024, including changes to which checkposts verify passes. This is as of October 2026; rules change – we check before you book.

Riding the toy train

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty with a steam-hauled rack section up to Coonoor. The full uphill run leaves Mettupalayam early in the morning, about 7.10 am, and takes around five hours. Seats sell out weeks ahead in season.

  • Option one, the full ride: drive to Mettupalayam (stay overnight in Coimbatore or near the station), board the morning train, and have the car meet you in Ooty.
  • Option two, the short ride: take the train between Coonoor and Ooty, about 1¼ hours, which runs several times a day and gives the tea-garden views without the early start. This is what we suggest for seniors and young children.
  • First class has cushioned seats; second class is busier. We book through IRCTC as soon as the reservation window opens and keep the drive as a fallback.

NovemberFresh and clearCool, some rain earlyVery good, fewer crowds
December – JanuaryPleasant, 12–25°CCold nights, 5–8°C, frost possibleExcellent; carry woollens for Ooty
FebruaryDry, coffee picking season endsClear skiesBest weather overall
March – AprilWarm; coffee blossom after first showersPleasant, 15–25°CGood; Ooty starts to fill
MayWarm with pre-monsoon showersPeak season; flower show at the Botanical GardenGujarat summer vacation – book 6–8 weeks ahead; e-pass caps matter
June – SeptemberVery heavy monsoon; some roads and waterfalls restrictedRain and fog, but coolerOnly for travellers who want rain; landslide closures possible in Coorg

Coorg receives some of the heaviest rain in Karnataka between June and September. Plantation stays are atmospheric in the monsoon, but sightseeing shrinks and we keep a day spare. Ooty is busiest in April–May, when hotel rates nearly double; October to February gives better value and clearer views.

Food and travel tips for Gujarati and Jain travellers

Vegetarian food, stop by stop

  • Mysuru: the easiest stop. Udupi-style vegetarian restaurants everywhere, North Indian thalis, and Mysore pak from the original sweet shops near the palace.
  • Coorg: local Kodava cuisine is meat-heavy, so honest advice: rely on your resort or homestay. Most cook good vegetarian meals, and resorts handle Jain requests with a day's notice; small homestays manage simple Jain food if told in advance. Madikeri and Kushalnagar have a few pure-veg restaurants.
  • Bandipur / Kabini: lodges serve set buffets with vegetarian options; we pass Jain requirements in writing.
  • Ooty and Coonoor: plenty of vegetarian restaurants on Commercial Road, including Gujarati and Rajasthani thali places that serve visiting families every summer. Jain food is easier here than in Coorg.

Practical tips

  • The Kalhatti ghat road into Ooty and the Mettupalayam ghat are full of hairpin bends; anyone prone to motion sickness should take medicine and sit in front.
  • Pack a sweater for Coorg evenings and a proper jacket for Ooty from November to February.
  • Leeches appear on plantation trails in the wet months; wear socks and carry salt.
  • Mobile signal is weak in the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest and in parts of Coorg.
  • Plastic bottles and single-use plastic are restricted in the Nilgiris; carry a steel bottle.
  • Buy coffee in Coorg, sandalwood and silk in Mysuru, and tea and homemade chocolate in Ooty.

Why plan Coorg and Ooty with Vibrant Holidays

  • Two states, one plan: we handle the Karnataka permit for the car, the Nilgiris e-pass and green tax, and the toy-train booking, so the state border is invisible to you.

  • Meals in writing: pure-veg and Jain preferences are printed on every hotel and lodge voucher, with honest notes where options are thin.

Coorg and Ooty tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Coorg and Ooty tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Coorg and Ooty packages currently start at ₹13,500 per person for 1 nights. Most of our Coorg and Ooty packages fall between ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

What is the best way to reach Coorg and Ooty from Ahmedabad?

Fly non-stop from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru, about two hours, and drive to Mysuru and Coorg with your own car. Finish in Ooty and fly home from Coimbatore, three hours away. Coimbatore has a non-stop from Ahmedabad on some days; otherwise we route the return through Bengaluru. Neither Coorg nor Ooty has its own airport.

How many days are enough for Coorg, Mysuru and Ooty?

Five nights covers the main loop: one night in Mysuru, two in Coorg and two in Ooty. Six nights adds Coonoor and a slower pace for couples. Seven nights lets families add a jungle lodge at Kabini or Bandipur and keeps every drive under four hours except the Coorg to Ooty day.

Do I need an e-pass to visit Ooty?

Tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris district need an e-pass from the Tamil Nadu government portal, a rule in place since 2024 following Madras High Court directions. For our packages the car operator applies on your behalf with your dates and hotel details. Daily vehicle caps can fill in May and on long weekends. This is as of October 2026.

How far is Coorg from Ooty?

About 240 to 260 km, which takes six and a half to seven and a half hours by road. The route runs through Mysuru or Hunsur and then the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests, which close to most traffic at night. We start after breakfast and stop for lunch on the way so that you reach Ooty before dark.

Can we ride the Ooty toy train on a package?

Yes. Families with time can ride the full Mettupalayam to Ooty route, which leaves early in the morning and takes about five hours. Most of our travellers prefer the shorter Coonoor to Ooty section, about an hour and a quarter, which runs several times a day. Seats sell out in season, so we book as soon as reservations open.

Is Jain food available in Coorg and Ooty?

In Ooty and Mysuru, yes, with several vegetarian and thali restaurants. Coorg is harder because the local cuisine is non-vegetarian, so we rely on resorts and homestays that cook Jain meals on notice. Jungle lodges need advance instructions. We print your meal preference on every voucher and tell you honestly where choices are limited.

Which is the best month for a Coorg Ooty trip?

October to February has the most comfortable weather for both, with cold nights in Ooty from December. March and April are pleasant too, and May is Ooty's busiest month with the flower show. June to September is heavy monsoon in Coorg, good only for travellers who want rain and can accept closed viewpoints.

Is a Coorg and Ooty tour suitable for senior citizens?

Yes. Most sights involve little walking, and we choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms. The long Coorg to Ooty drive is the one tiring day, so we can break it with a night in Mysuru. The short toy-train ride from Coonoor to Ooty is easier than the full climb from Mettupalayam.

Can I take a train from Ahmedabad to Coorg or Ooty?

There is no railway in Coorg, and Ooty is reached by the mountain railway from Mettupalayam. From Ahmedabad Junction, a few weekly trains run towards Bengaluru and Coimbatore in about 30 to 40 hours. It suits large families on a budget, though most travellers fly one way at least to save holiday days.

Can Coorg and Ooty be combined with Kerala?

Yes. From Ooty it is about five to six hours to Kochi or a little less to Wayanad, so a ten or eleven night trip can cover Mysuru, Coorg, Ooty and Kerala's backwaters. You would fly into Bengaluru and out of Kochi. We plan the drives so that no day exceeds six hours on the road.

What should I pack for Coorg and Ooty?

Light woollens for Coorg evenings, a warm jacket for Ooty between November and February, comfortable walking shoes for plantation trails, an umbrella in any season, motion-sickness tablets for the ghat roads, and a steel water bottle because single-use plastic is restricted in the Nilgiris. Carry some cash for small shops and the checkpost.
