The Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – is the pilgrimage most Gujarati families promise their parents and keep postponing, because the logistics look hard: mountain roads, a 16-km climb to Kedarnath, registration portals, a season that lasts only six months. It is hard if you do it alone. Done with a plan, it is eleven or twelve days of the most rewarding travel in India, and it is entirely possible for fit travellers in their sixties and seventies.

This page lays the plan out. All 17 packages below are live with current prices. After them: the price guide by category, how to reach Haridwar or Dehradun from Ahmedabad, the full 11-night itinerary with altitudes, a practical block on registration, the Kedarnath ascent (pony, palki, helicopter) and senior fitness, the Do Dham and helicopter variants, and the month-wise table for the yatra season. Every trip is a private, customised itinerary – your own vehicle and driver, your own dates.

Char Dham Yatra package price guide (2026)

Char Dham packages on this page start at ₹19,500 per person. Prices depend on the vehicle (a Tempo Traveller shared by one extended family is far cheaper per head than an Innova for two), the hotel category in the hill towns – where "deluxe" means clean, heated and with attached bathrooms rather than luxury – and whether Kedarnath is done on foot or by helicopter. Bands are per person on twin sharing from Haridwar or Dehradun, with breakfast and dinner, excluding train or flight fares from Ahmedabad.

TripStandard (clean budget hotels, Tempo Traveller)Deluxe (best available 3★, Innova Crysta)Premium (top hotels where they exist, heli for Kedarnath)
Do Dham – Kedarnath + Badrinath, 6N/7D by road₹18,000 – 24,000₹28,000 – 36,000₹55,000+
Char Dham 9N/10D by road (brisk)₹26,000 – 33,000₹38,000 – 48,000₹70,000+
Char Dham 11N/12D by road (recommended pace)₹30,000 – 38,000₹44,000 – 56,000₹80,000+
Char Dham by helicopter from Dehradun, 5N/6D––₹1,90,000 – 2,50,000
Do Dham by helicopter from Dehradun, 1–3 days––₹1,00,000 – 1,40,000

Add for travel from Ahmedabad: train fares to Haridwar run about ₹1,500–3,500 per person each way in 3AC or 2AC; Ahmedabad–Dehradun flights are typically ₹7,000–12,000 return via Delhi or on the non-stop when it operates. Usually extra on the ground: pony, palki or helicopter for the Kedarnath and Yamunotri climbs, VIP darshan or special puja fees, lunches, Kedarnath hotel supplements (rooms up there are basic and dear), hot-water buckets in some hill hotels, and any extra night caused by a road closure. We print all of this on your quote.

How to reach the Char Dham from Ahmedabad

The yatra begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh (by road) or Dehradun (by air or helicopter). Ahmedabad has good links to both.

  • By train to Haridwar (most families): Ahmedabad is connected to Haridwar by daily or near-daily trains that take roughly 24–28 hours, arriving the next morning or afternoon. We book 3AC or 2AC berths for the whole family together, and your vehicle and our Haridwar partner meet you at the station. The train suits parents who prefer not to fly and keeps the budget down; it also gives a rest day in Haridwar before the hills begin.
  • By air to Dehradun: Ahmedabad–Dehradun (Jolly Grant) is about 1 hour 45 minutes on the non-stop when it operates, or 4–5 hours via Delhi. Jolly Grant is 35 km from Haridwar and 20 km from Rishikesh; you can be on the yatra road the same afternoon. This is the route for helicopter yatras, which all leave from Dehradun's Sahastradhara helipad, and for families short of leave.
  • By air to Delhi plus road: Ahmedabad–Delhi flights (1 hour 30 minutes) followed by a 5–6 hour drive to Haridwar – useful when Dehradun fares are high or you want a Delhi stop.
  • Getting around: your own vehicle throughout – a Tempo Traveller for 8–12 travellers, an Innova Crysta for up to 6 – with a hill-experienced driver who stays with you for the full circuit. Roads are mountain highways with ongoing all-weather road works; expect 30–35 km/h averages.

  • Day 12 – Depart: train from Haridwar or flight from Dehradun to Ahmedabad.

With a 12th night we add a rest day at Guptkashi after Kedarnath, which seniors appreciate; with a 13th, Haridwar's Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples by ropeway.

6 nights / 7 days – Do Dham: Kedarnath and Badrinath

Haridwar – Guptkashi (Day 2) – Kedarnath (Day 3) – Guptkashi (Day 4) – Badrinath (Day 5) – Rudraprayag (Day 6) – Haridwar/Dehradun (Day 7). The two highest and most-visited shrines in a week of leave; the right choice for a first yatra or when Yamunotri and Gangotri were done earlier.

5 nights / 6 days – Char Dham by helicopter from Dehradun

Fly Ahmedabad–Dehradun; helicopter from Sahastradhara to Kharsali (Yamunotri – 6 km trek or pony/palki, or a short heli-shuttle where offered), Harsil (Gangotri by road, 25 km), Sersi or Guptkashi (Kedarnath by shuttle helicopter) and Badrinath, with nights at comfortable hotels or camps near each helipad; priority darshan arranged at all four. For HNI families and for parents who cannot manage long road days, this turns twelve days into six. Weather holds are part of helicopter travel; we build a buffer day in and explain the refund terms before booking.

Yatra registration, the Kedarnath climb and a senior fitness checklist

Registration – mandatory for every yatri

  1. The Uttarakhand government requires every Char Dham pilgrim to register before darshan. Registration opens a few weeks before the shrines do and is free.
  2. Register online on the Uttarakhand Tourism yatra registration portal or its mobile app with each traveller's name, mobile number, ID (Aadhaar is accepted here) and travel dates per dham; or offline at counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh and along the route. We do the online registration for every traveller on our packages and send you the registration letter and QR code before you leave Ahmedabad.
  3. Daily darshan numbers per shrine are capped in peak weeks, so dates matter – book the package and register together.
  4. Carry a printout or screenshot of the registration, plus the same ID, to each dham; it is checked at Barkot, Hina (Gangotri road), Sonprayag and Pandukeshwar.
  5. Kedarnath helicopter tickets are sold only on the official IRCTC heli-yatra portal and require a valid yatra registration first; they open in batches and sell out within hours, which is why we hold your registration ready before the heli window.

The Kedarnath ascent – your four options

OptionHow it worksIndicative cost per personBest for
On foot16–18 km from Gaurikund, 6–8 hours up, 4–5 hours down; tea stalls and medical posts along the routeFreeFit adults under 55 with trekking experience
Pony / muleGovernment-registered ponies from Gaurikund, about 5–6 hours upAbout ₹2,500 – 3,500 each way at official ratesMost parents and children over 10
Palki (dandi) or pithuFour bearers carry a chair (palki); one porter carries a child or light adult in a basket (pithu)Palki about ₹6,000 – 9,000 each way by weight; pithu ₹3,000 – 5,000Seniors who cannot ride; small children
HelicopterFrom Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi helipads to Kedarnath in 8–10 minutes; return the same day or next morningAbout ₹6,000 – 9,000 return at government-regulated fares; private charters cost many times moreSeniors, heart or joint patients, anyone short of time

Yamunotri is a shorter climb – 5–6 km from Janki Chatti – with ponies at about ₹1,500–2,500 each way and palkis available. Gangotri and Badrinath involve no trekking; the vehicle reaches the temple town.

Senior fitness checklist – read this before you book for your parents

  • Travellers above 60, or with heart, blood-pressure, diabetes or lung conditions, should take a doctor's fitness note before the yatra; health screening camps on the route may check pulse and oxygen and can stop anyone who is unwell from going higher. We recommend the helicopter or a palki for Kedarnath in these cases.
  • Start walking 30–40 minutes a day two months before departure; climbing stairs helps more than flat walking.
  • Kedarnath and Badrinath are above 3,000 m. Headache, breathlessness and poor sleep on the first night are common; drink water, avoid alcohol, and tell your driver or our partner if symptoms persist. Our 11-night route gains altitude gradually, with nights at lower towns between the high shrines.
  • Carry your regular medicines for the full trip plus a week, a pulse oximeter, ORS, paracetamol, motion-sickness tablets for the hill roads, and your prescriptions. Pharmacies exist in Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Joshimath, not at the shrines.
  • Pack proper walking shoes with grip, a rain jacket, thermal layers, a woollen cap and gloves even in May – Kedarnath nights fall near freezing in any month – a torch, and a small day-pack for the climb.
  • Keep one rest day in the plan. Families who try the yatra in eight days with seniors are the ones who end up missing a dham.

Best time for the Char Dham Yatra – month by month

The four shrines open on dates set by the temple committees each year – Yamunotri and Gangotri on Akshaya Tritiya (late April or early May), Kedarnath and Badrinath a few days later – and close around Diwali: Kedarnath on Bhai Dooj and Badrinath in mid-November, with Yamunotri and Gangotri a little earlier. Ask us for the current year's dates; they shift with the lunar calendar.

MonthsWeatherGood forPrices and crowds
Late April – MayCold at the shrines (0–12°C), pleasant in the valleys; snow still beside the Kedarnath path in the first weeksOpening-week darshan, Gujarat May-vacation families; dependable weatherHighest crowds of the year – hotels and heli seats sell out; book by February
JuneWarm in the valleys, 5–15°C at the shrines; pre-monsoon showers from mid-monthSecond-best window; crowds thin after school reopening in GujaratHigh until mid-June, easing later
July – August (monsoon)Heavy rain, landslides and road closures common; Kedarnath trek slipperyNot recommended – we do not sell road yatras in these months except to experienced pilgrims who accept delaysLowest; cancellation risk high
SeptemberRain easing, clearest mountain views of the season, 3–12°C at the shrinesOur favourite month for parents – fewer yatris, good weather, roads repairedModerate
October – early NovemberCold and dry; Kedarnath nights below freezing by late OctoberDiwali-time yatra, closing ceremonies, photographersModerate, rising in Diwali week; Kedarnath hotels close early
Mid November – AprilShrines closed; deities worshipped at winter seats (Ukhimath for Kedarnath, Joshimath for Badrinath, Kharsali, Mukhba)Winter Char Dham darshan at the winter seats, Haridwar–Rishikesh tripsLow

For Gujarati families the May vacation is the natural slot, and it is also the busiest. If leave allows, mid-September to mid-October gives the same darshan with half the queue and clearer skies.

Places to visit on the Char Dham route

  • Yamunotri: source temple of the Yamuna at 3,290 m; cook rice in the Surya Kund hot spring to take home as prasad.
  • Gangotri: the Ganga's source shrine at 3,100 m amid deodar forest; Harsil's valley on the way is the prettiest stretch of the yatra.
  • Kedarnath: the highest Jyotirlinga, standing at 3,580 m against the Kedar dome – the emotional peak of the yatra.
  • Badrinath: the Vishnu shrine between the Nar and Narayan peaks; Tapt Kund hot spring, Mana village and Vyas Gufa alongside.
  • Haridwar: Har ki Pauri Ganga aarti, Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi ropeways – the start and finish of the yatra.
  • Rishikesh: Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat aarti, the Beatles ashram; river rafting for the young in the family.
  • Uttarkashi: Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Nehru Mountaineering Institute town.
  • Guptkashi and Ukhimath: Ardhanarishwar temple, and the winter seat of Kedarnath at Omkareshwar temple.
  • Panch Prayag: Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandprayag and Vishnuprayag – the five confluences on the Badrinath road.
  • Joshimath and Auli: the Adi Shankaracharya math and, by ropeway, Auli's meadows with Nanda Devi views.
  • Chopta and Tungnath: the meadow on the Guptkashi–Badrinath road and, for the fit, the 3.5 km trek to the highest Shiva temple in the world.
  • Tehri lake: the reservoir on the Uttarkashi–Guptkashi road with a lunch halt and boating.

Food, hotels and tips for Gujarati yatris

  • Food is vegetarian throughout. The entire Char Dham route is vegetarian by law and custom; onion and garlic are also avoided at the shrine towns. Haridwar and Rishikesh have Gujarati thali restaurants and Gujarati dharamshalas, and the hotels we use in Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Badrinath cook a simple North Indian vegetarian dinner – dal, rice, roti, sabzi, kheer – with Gujarati or Jain adjustments on request, confirmed in writing. At Kedarnath food is basic (khichdi, dal-roti, Maggi) and expensive; carry theplas, khakhra, dry fruit and chikki from Ahmedabad for the climb days.
  • Jain yatris: Jain food is manageable at Haridwar, Rishikesh and the valley towns on notice; at Kedarnath and Badrinath expect dal-rice-roti without root vegetables rather than a full Jain menu.
  • Hotel reality: Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun have 3★ to 5★ hotels. In the hill towns the best hotels are clean 2–3★ properties with attached bathrooms, geysers or hot-water buckets and room heaters on request; at Kedarnath, GMVN and private lodges are dormitory-style or very basic rooms, and we book them months ahead. Badrinath has a few better hotels with heating. Set expectations with parents accordingly.
  • Pack: layers for 0–30°C, rain protection, walking shoes, torch, power bank (electricity is intermittent at Kedarnath), a cloth bag for temple visits, copies of IDs and registration, and a small first-aid kit.
  • Money and connectivity: carry cash – ATMs are scarce beyond Uttarkashi and Guptkashi, and UPI fails when the network drops. BSNL and Jio work best in the hills; expect no signal on the Kedarnath trail for stretches.
  • Timings: shrine darshan runs roughly 6 am to 8 pm with afternoon closures; Kedarnath's helicopters fly only in the morning on most days; vehicles are not allowed on hill roads after dark and gates on some stretches close around sunset, which is why our drives end by 6 pm.
  • Weather and cancellations: landslides and heli weather holds happen. Our packages carry a day of buffer, our Haridwar partner re-routes the same day, and extra-night costs caused by closures are at actuals with no agency margin – we tell you this before you book, not after.

Why book your Char Dham Yatra with Vibrant Holidays

  • 11 years, Ahmedabad office: plan at C G Road or on WhatsApp with a consultant who has done the yatra and will tell you plainly whether your parents should take the helicopter.
  • Live prices, no bait: the "from" price on this page is a package on sale today, and every quote shows pony, palki and heli costs as separate lines so nothing appears at Gaurikund.
  • Gujarati pure-veg and Jain meals arranged with our hotel partners at Haridwar, Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Badrinath, confirmed in writing.
  • Train or flight from Ahmedabad booked with the package, registration done for every traveller, and your vehicle waiting at Haridwar station or Dehradun airport.
  • 24×7 on-tour support from our Ahmedabad team and our Haridwar ground partner, with same-day re-routing when a road closes. IATA-accredited; member of TAAI, TAFI, ADTOI and IATO; recognised by the Ministry of Tourism.

Char Dham Yatra packages – frequently asked questions

How much does a Char Dham Yatra package cost from Ahmedabad?

Char Dham and Do Dham packages on this page start at ₹19,500 per person. A complete 11-night Char Dham by road with clean budget hotels and a Tempo Traveller shared by the family costs ₹30,000–38,000 per person excluding train or flight fares; the deluxe category with Innova and the best available 3-star hotels is ₹44,000–56,000. Helicopter Char Dham from Dehradun costs ₹1,90,000–2,50,000.

What is the easiest way to reach Haridwar from Ahmedabad?

By train: daily or near-daily services from Ahmedabad reach Haridwar in roughly 24–28 hours, and we book 3AC or 2AC berths for the family together. By air: Ahmedabad–Dehradun takes about 1 hour 45 minutes non-stop when it operates, or 4–5 hours via Delhi; Dehradun airport is 35 km from Haridwar. Helicopter yatras start from Dehradun.

When does the Char Dham Yatra open and close?

Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya, in late April or early May, and Kedarnath and Badrinath a few days later. They close around Diwali – Kedarnath on Bhai Dooj and Badrinath in mid-November, Yamunotri and Gangotri slightly earlier. Dates are fixed yearly by the temple committees; ask us for the current year's schedule.

Is registration compulsory for the Char Dham Yatra?

Yes, for every pilgrim. Registration is free on the Uttarakhand Tourism portal or app, or at offline counters in Haridwar and Rishikesh, and daily numbers per shrine are capped in peak weeks. We complete the online registration for every traveller on our packages and send you the registration letter and QR code before departure; carry it with the same ID to each dham.

How difficult is the Kedarnath trek, and what do pony, palki and helicopter cost?

It is 16–18 km from Gaurikund with about 1,600 m of climb – 6–8 hours on foot. Registered ponies cost about ₹2,500–3,500 each way, palkis about ₹6,000–9,000 each way by weight, and the helicopter from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi about ₹6,000–9,000 return at regulated fares, booked on the official IRCTC portal. Most parents take a pony or the helicopter.

Is the Char Dham Yatra safe for senior citizens?

Yes for seniors in reasonable health who prepare. We recommend a doctor's fitness note, two months of daily walking beforehand, the 11-night pace with nights at lower towns between high shrines, a pony or helicopter for Kedarnath, and carrying regular medicines plus a pulse oximeter. Health posts on the route may check anyone who appears unwell before allowing them higher.

What is a Do Dham Yatra?

A Do Dham covers two of the four shrines, almost always Kedarnath and Badrinath – the two highest and most visited. By road it takes 6 nights from Haridwar; by helicopter from Dehradun it can be done in one to three days for ₹1,00,000–1,40,000 per person. Families often do Do Dham first and return later for Yamunotri and Gangotri.

How does the helicopter Char Dham package work?

You fly Ahmedabad–Dehradun, then travel by helicopter from Sahastradhara helipad over 5 nights to helipads near each shrine, with priority darshan arranged, comfortable hotels or camps, and short road or pony transfers where helipads are not at the temple. Weather holds are possible, so we include a buffer day and explain refund terms before you book. Cost is ₹1,90,000–2,50,000 per person.

Is Gujarati or Jain food available on the Char Dham route?

The whole route is vegetarian, and shrine towns avoid onion and garlic. Haridwar and Rishikesh have Gujarati thali restaurants and dharamshalas; in Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Badrinath our hotel partners cook simple North Indian vegetarian dinners with Gujarati or Jain adjustments on notice. At Kedarnath food is basic, so carry theplas, khakhra and dry fruit for the climb.

What is the best month for the Char Dham Yatra?

May and early June have dependable weather and suit the Gujarat school vacation but are the most crowded. Mid-September to mid-October is our recommendation for parents – clear skies, repaired roads and far fewer yatris. July and August bring landslides and closures and are not advised. The shrines close around Diwali.

What happens if a road closes or the helicopter cannot fly?

Landslides and weather holds are part of the Himalaya. Every itinerary carries a buffer day, our Haridwar partner re-routes or re-times the same day, and any extra hotel night caused by a closure is charged at actuals with no agency margin. Helicopter operators refund or re-schedule cancelled sectors under their own terms, which we share before booking.

What is usually not included in a Char Dham package?

Train or flight fares from Ahmedabad unless added, pony, palki or helicopter for Kedarnath and Yamunotri, VIP darshan and special puja fees, lunches, Kedarnath room supplements, hot-water charges in some hill hotels, extra nights caused by road closures, tips, personal expenses and GST at 5%. Every quote lists inclusions and exclusions side by side.

Can I do the Kedarnath darshan by helicopter?

Yes. Helicopter shuttles fly from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi to Kedarnath in 8–12 minutes during the season. Tickets are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal against your registration ID and sell out within hours of release, so tell us early. Flights depend on weather, so we keep a buffer day in the itinerary.

What is the difference between Char Dham and Do Dham packages?

Char Dham covers all four shrines – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – in 10–12 days and includes two ascents. Do Dham covers Kedarnath and Badrinath only in 6–7 days, with one ascent and far less driving. Families short on leave, or with seniors who find long drives tiring, usually choose Do Dham.

Is July or August a good time for the Char Dham Yatra?

We do not recommend it. The monsoon brings landslides and road closures on the Rishikesh–Badrinath and Uttarkashi routes, helicopter services are often suspended and darshan days can be lost waiting for roads to clear. May–June and September–October are the right months; if you must travel in monsoon, we build in two buffer days.
