Kedarnath Helicopter Booking 2027: IRCTC HeliYatra Guide

Kedarnath helicopter booking is the one part of a Char Dham trip that families from Gujarat most often get wrong: tickets are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, in short windows, against a yatra registration number that must already exist, and the good helipads sell out within hours. This guide walks you through the 2027 booking step by step, with the 2026 fares, the rules that apply on the day, the refund maths and a realistic plan from Ahmedabad. Facts are as of November 2026; the 2027 fares and dates will be announced by UCADA and IRCTC in spring and we will update this page.

Kedarnath helicopter booking at a glance (as of November 2026)

  • Only official site: heliyatra.irctc.co.in. No agent, app or "fast-track" website is authorised to sell these seats.
  • Mandatory first step: a Char Dham Yatra registration (URN or Group ID) from the Uttarakhand Tourism portal, the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app or WhatsApp. Registration is free.
  • Three helipads: Sersi (Sitapur), Phata and Guptkashi, each with its own operators and fare. The flight is 5–15 minutes one way.
  • 2026 return fares: ₹6,390 from Sersi, ₹10,164 from Phata, ₹12,762 from Guptkashi per person, plus IRCTC convenience fee and gateway charges; a late-booking surcharge of 20–50% applies inside 15 days.
  • Limits: 2 tickets per IRCTC login, up to 6 passengers per ticket; 80 kg per passenger before the ₹150 per kg excess charge; 2 kg of baggage.
  • Season: flights run from the day before the temple opens (late April or early May) to mid-June, stop for the monsoon, and resume from mid-September to the closing day in late October or early November.

Sersi, Phata or Guptkashi: which helipad to book

All three helipads sit on the Guptkashi–Sonprayag road, so the choice is really about price, how early you are willing to leave your hotel, and which one still has seats when your window opens.

Helipad 2026 return fare (per person) Flight time one way Operators (2026) Best for
Sersi (Sitapur), ~9 km from Kedarnath ₹6,390 5–7 min Himalayan Heli, Arrow Aircraft, Heritage Aviation Cheapest; sells out first; stay in Sitapur or Sonprayag
Phata, ~30 km ₹10,164 ~9 min Thumby, Pilgrimage Aviation, United Helicharters, Rajas Most operators and slots; easiest to find seats for a family of 6+
Guptkashi (Narayankoti), ~44 km ₹12,762 10–15 min Chipsan Aviation, Trans Bharat Aviation Best hotels and medical facilities; no pre-dawn drive on flight day

Fares are the UCADA-regulated 2026 rates (one-way ₹3,043 / ₹4,840 / ₹6,077 before GST, as announced on 31 March 2026) and will be revised for 2027. For a Gujarati family with parents over 65, our usual advice is Guptkashi: you sleep 2 km from the helipad, the town has pharmacies and a hospital, and the extra ₹6,000 per person buys a 5 am start instead of a 3 am one. Couples and younger groups who want the lowest fare should set an alarm for the Sersi release.

The 2027 timeline: when each window opens

IRCTC does not sell the whole season at once. In 2026 the pattern was: yatra registration opened on 6 March; UCADA announced the operators and fares on 31 March; the first HeliYatra window opened on 15 April at 6 pm for flights from 22 April to 15 June; the post-monsoon windows opened on 7 September (flights 15–30 September), 22 September (1–15 October) and 9 October (16 October to 9 November). Each window was announced on the portal homepage a day or two ahead, and Sersi seats were the first to go each time.

For 2027, expect the same shape. The Kedarnath opening date is traditionally announced on Mahashivratri, which falls on 6 March 2027; the temple opened on 2 May in 2025 and 22 April in 2026, so plan for late April or early May 2027. Register for the yatra in March, keep your IRCTC HeliYatra login ready, and watch the portal from early April. We send our Char Dham clients a WhatsApp alert the day a window is announced.

Step-by-step: how to book on IRCTC HeliYatra

  1. Register for the yatra first. Go to registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app), add every traveller with a photo ID and travel dates, and download the URN (one person) or Group ID (family). Do this at least four days before the heli window; the portal needs 24–48 hours to recognise a new registration.
  2. Create your HeliYatra account early. On heliyatra.irctc.co.in, sign up with your mobile number (that becomes your user ID), verify the email and mobile OTPs and set a password. Do not leave this for release day.
  3. Be logged in 10 minutes before the window opens. Use a laptop on a stable connection rather than a phone; the pages are heavy and the queue is long.
  4. Select Shri Kedarnath Dham, then the helipad. If Sersi shows no seats, try Phata before refreshing; the three helipads release separately.
  5. Pick the date and slot. Same-day return slots are typically 6–9 am and 9–12 noon; afternoon slots usually mean a night at Kedarnath. Morning flights are the most weather-reliable.
  6. Enter passengers exactly as on the ID. Each name, age and URN/Group ID must match the photo ID that person will carry. Tickets are non-transferable and a mismatch means no boarding.
  7. Pay within the timer. UPI is the fastest; the payment page expires in a few minutes. If the payment fails, check your email and the "My bookings" page before paying again, otherwise you can end up with two tickets and a cancellation charge.
  8. Print the e-ticket. Screenshots and partially printed tickets are treated as invalid at the helipad. Carry one printout per ticket plus the original IDs.

IRCTC assigns the operator for each flight; you cannot choose Thumby over Pilgrimage Aviation at booking. Seating depends on load, so a family of six may be split across two helicopters that leave a few minutes apart.

Rules on flight day that catch pilgrims out

  • Reporting time: be at the helipad entry point two hours before your slot and at the counter at least one hour before. For a 6–9 am slot that means 5 am. A no-show forfeits the full fare.
  • Weigh-in: every passenger is weighed before the boarding pass is issued. Above 80 kg (an infant's weight counts with the adult carrying it) you pay ₹150 per extra kilo at the counter; weights are not averaged across a group.
  • Baggage: operators allow about 2 kg per person, in practice a small sling bag. Leave suitcases at the Guptkashi hotel; excess goes by road at your cost, which for a same-day darshan is pointless anyway.
  • Children: under 2 fly free on a lap; 2 years and above pay the full fare and get a seat. A sortie carries at most 2 children and 2 infants.
  • Health: the 2026 season had mandatory medical screening at Guptkashi, Phata and Sonprayag, and a fitness certificate is recommended above 55. Carry your prescriptions and a copy of your ECG if you have a heart condition.
  • At the top: helipad to temple is a 500 m walk, with pithu and palki available. Budget about two hours for darshan, but the return check-in queue at the Kedarnath helipad can itself take two hours on peak days, so do not plan anything else that morning.

Weather holds, cancellations and refunds

Kedarnath sits at about 3,580 m and the valley clouds over by late morning, so holds are normal in early June and late September. After the June 2025 Gaurikund crash and the 30 October 2026 charter accident near Joshimath, DGCA has tightened pre-flight checks, and from 2 November 2026 charter flights from Dehradun must carry two pilots. The shuttle services from Sersi, Phata and Guptkashi were not affected by that order, but expect stricter weather holds than before.

Who cancels and when Refund of ticket amount
You, more than 5 days before the slot 75%
You, 48 hours to 5 days before 50%
You, 24 to 48 hours before 25%
You, under 24 hours, or a no-show Nil
Operator, weather, technical or government order Full ticket amount (convenience fee and gateway charges are never refunded)

Source: IRCTC HeliYatra cancellation policy, read on 6 November 2026. Two practical points: if your slot is cancelled, get the ticket stamped "cancelled" at the helipad counter before you leave, because the refund is processed against that stamp; and a cancelled slot is not carried forward, so you join the queue for a fresh booking or walk the 16 km from Gaurikund. Refunds reach the original payment account in 5–7 working days; if not, email heliyatra@irctc.co.in within 15 days of the flight date, after which claims are not accepted.

What a helicopter darshan costs from Ahmedabad

Indicative budget for two adults flying from Guptkashi in the second week of May 2027, as of November 2026; prices vary by date.

  • Flights Ahmedabad–Dehradun return: from about ₹58,500 for two with checked bags on IndiGo's non-stop 6E6712 (13:45–15:30) and 6E6713 (16:05–17:50), or from ₹57,900 via Delhi, per Kiwi.com on 6 November 2026. Call it ₹29,000–31,000 per person.
  • Helicopter: ₹12,762 × 2 = ₹25,524 at 2026 Guptkashi fares, or ₹12,780 from Sersi, plus roughly ₹1,500 in fees. Add 20–40% if you book inside 15 days.
  • Private car, Dehradun–Guptkashi–Rishikesh–Dehradun, 4 days: ₹18,000–24,000 for a sedan or small SUV, tolls and driver included.
  • Hotels, 4 nights (Rishikesh, two in Guptkashi, Dehradun): ₹14,000–28,000 for a couple in clean 3-star rooms with pure-veg food.

With meals and tips that is roughly ₹1,20,000–1,45,000 for a couple, or about ₹60,000–73,000 per person, for a four-night Kedarnath-by-air trip with the darshan on a single morning. The all-helicopter Do Dham charter from Dehradun's Sahastradhara helipad was ₹1,00,000–1,40,000 per person in 2026 and operators have said the new two-pilot rule will push charter fares up for 2027, so the Guptkashi shuttle is now by far the better value for Kedarnath alone.

A 4-night plan from Ahmedabad

  • Day 1, Ahmedabad to Rishikesh: the 13:45 IndiGo lands in Dehradun at 15:30; drive 45 minutes to Rishikesh for Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat and an early night.
  • Day 2, Rishikesh to Guptkashi (about 180 km, 7–8 hours): leave by 6 am, breakfast at Devprayag, lunch at Srinagar (Garhwal), reach Guptkashi by 3 pm. Visit Vishwanath temple, confirm your weights and IDs, sleep by 9 pm.
  • Day 3, helicopter darshan: report at the helipad at 5 am for a 6–9 am slot, fly 15 minutes, walk to the temple, darshan, fly back by noon. Rest in the afternoon; Triyuginarayan temple (about 25 km) if everyone has energy.
  • Day 4, Guptkashi to Rishikesh or Dehradun: a relaxed drive with a stop at Dhari Devi; Dehradun hotel near the airport.
  • Day 5, Dehradun to Ahmedabad: the 16:05 non-stop reaches Ahmedabad at 17:50.

Keep Day 4 free as the weather buffer: if Day 3 is grounded, a Day 4 morning slot is your second chance before the drive down. Families combining Badrinath should add two nights (Guptkashi–Badrinath is a full day's drive) and read our Char Dham Yatra 2027 dates and booking calendar for the opening and closing days.

Tips for Gujarati families, seniors and veg travellers

  • Food: Guptkashi, Phata and Sonprayag have simple pure-veg dhabas (dal, roti, sabzi, Maggi); Jain food without onion and garlic needs to be requested the evening before, and we fix this with the hotel in advance. Carry thepla, khakhra and dry fruit for the 5 am helipad wait; nothing is open at that hour.
  • Cold: even in May the helipad at dawn is 5–8°C and the temple can be near freezing. Thermals, a wind jacket, gloves and closed shoes for everyone; the 2 kg baggage limit means you wear the warm layers rather than carry them.
  • Seniors: the helicopter removes the 16 km climb but not the altitude. Walk slowly from the helipad, skip the pithu if a wheelchair is not possible, and use the palki for anyone with a knee or heart condition. More in our guide to travelling with senior citizen parents.
  • Insurance: a domestic travel insurance plan that covers trip cancellation and medical evacuation costs a few hundred rupees and is worth it for a trip where a weather hold can cost you a non-refundable hotel night.
  • Phones and photos: network is patchy beyond Guptkashi; download the e-ticket, IDs and hotel vouchers to your phone and carry printouts.

How to spot a fake Kedarnath helicopter site

Every season, pilgrims from Gujarat lose money to websites and WhatsApp agents selling "confirmed" Kedarnath heli tickets. The warning signs: the site is not on the irctc.co.in domain; it asks for Aadhaar or PAN uploads before showing availability; it offers "VIP", "agent" or "fast-track" tickets at ₹15,000–25,000; it does not ask for your yatra registration number; or it accepts payment to a personal UPI ID. IRCTC itself does not sell through agents, and the operators at the helipad will not board anyone whose name is not on an IRCTC ticket. If a genuine package operator includes the helicopter, ask for the IRCTC PNR in your name before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

When does Kedarnath helicopter booking open for 2027?

Not announced yet. In 2026 the first window opened on 15 April for flights from 22 April, a week after the yatra registration had been running. Expect an April 2027 release on heliyatra.irctc.co.in, announced a day or two ahead on its homepage.

What is the Kedarnath helicopter ticket price?

The 2026 return fare was ₹6,390 from Sersi, ₹10,164 from Phata and ₹12,762 from Guptkashi per person, before the IRCTC convenience fee, gateway charges and any late-booking surcharge. UCADA will notify 2027 fares around March 2027.

Can I book without a Char Dham registration?

No. The HeliYatra portal asks for each passenger's URN or the family's Group ID and will not accept payment without it. Register first, wait a day or two for it to sync, then book.

Is the helicopter safe for senior citizens and heart patients?

The flight itself is short and smooth in the morning, and it is the standard choice for pilgrims who cannot climb. The altitude at the temple is the real strain, so get a fitness check before travelling, carry medicines, and walk slowly after landing. Weather screening is stricter since 2025, which is a good thing.

How many people can I book for at once?

Two tickets per IRCTC user ID, with up to six passengers each, so twelve people. A bigger group needs a second login, usually a second family member's mobile number.

Can Vibrant Holidays book the helicopter for us?

We cannot buy the seats on your behalf, because IRCTC sells only to the passenger's own login. What we do is register your family, set up your HeliYatra account, alert you the moment a window opens, sit with you on the call while you book, and build the hotels, car and flights around the slot you get. We never promise a confirmed seat before IRCTC does.

Planning Kedarnath by helicopter in 2027?

Vibrant Holidays has planned private Char Dham trips for families from Gujarat since 2015. Tell us your dates and who is travelling and we will map the registration, the heli window and a pure-veg itinerary around it.
