There is no single best time to visit Kashmir; there is a best time for what you want. For most families the answer is April to June, when the valley is green, every road and meadow is open and Srinagar sits between 15 and 30°C. For snow, it is late December to February, with Gulmarg holding snow into March. For colour and calm, it is mid-September to early November, when the chinar trees turn red and gold and the summer crowd has gone. July and August are pleasant in the valley but busy with the Amarnath Yatra on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads.

This guide goes month by month with temperatures for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, what is open and what is closed, which events fall when, how crowds and prices move, and a verdict for families, honeymooners, senior citizens and snow seekers. Dates for things that change every year – the Tulip Garden, the Amarnath Yatra, road openings – are given as of November 2026, and we confirm them again when you book. If you are working out the budget rather than the month, see our Kashmir trip cost guide.

Weather in the mountains varies from year to year: a late snowfall can return in March, and a warm winter can leave Gulmarg thin on snow in early January. Treat the table as a guide to the month, not a forecast for a date.

The four seasons in Kashmir, and who each one suits

Spring: March to mid-May

The valley wakes up. Srinagar's gardens fill with blossom, the Tulip Garden on the Zabarwan foothills opens, and Gulmarg still has snow on its upper slopes while the lower meadows turn green. Days are mild, nights cool. It is the best time for seniors and photographers, and for anyone who wants snow and flowers in one trip. Expect a few rainy days in March and April.

Summer: mid-May to August

Everything is open: Aru and Betaab valleys, Thajiwas glacier above Sonamarg, the road to Zojila and on to Ladakh, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg. Srinagar touches 30°C in July, but the hill stations stay at 18 – 26°C. May and June are the busiest months of the year because of school holidays across India. From early July the Amarnath Yatra adds security convoys and traffic on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads.

Autumn: September to mid-November

Crisp, dry, clear days and cold nights. Orchards are heavy with apples in September, the chinars around Dal Lake and Naseem Bagh glow red and amber from late October, and the saffron fields of Pampore flower for a few weeks around the turn of October and November. Crowds thin, prices soften, and the light is the best of the year. Many of our repeat Kashmir travellers now pick this season over summer.

Winter: mid-November to February

Snow transforms Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and on some days Srinagar too. Gulmarg becomes India's main ski resort, and the gondola climbs over deep snow. The trade-off is cold – nights well below freezing – shorter days, and the risk that a heavy snowfall delays flights or closes the Srinagar–Gulmarg road for a few hours. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, Sonamarg can now be visited in winter as well, while the Zojila pass beyond it stays closed.

Planning a winter trip mainly for snow? Our snow places in India in December guide compares Gulmarg with Himachal and Uttarakhand. If Ladakh is on the list, the Ladakh trip cost guide covers that side.

Dates that matter: tulips, the gondola, roads and the yatra

  • Tulip Garden, Srinagar: Asia's largest tulip garden opens for about a month each spring, depending on when the bulbs flower. In 2026 it opened on 16 March and closed on 16 April after more than 3.5 lakh visitors. The first two weeks of April usually have the fullest bloom; weekends are crowded.
  • Gulmarg gondola: runs through the year, weather permitting. Phase 1 to Kongdoori is the one families use; Phase 2 to Apharwat is the first to stop in high wind or heavy snow, and in winter it serves skiers. Tickets are sold online with daily limits, so book once your dates are fixed.
  • Ski season: roughly mid-December to March, best in January and February.
  • Sonamarg and Zojila: the Z-Morh tunnel keeps Sonamarg reachable in winter. The Zojila pass towards Kargil and Leh usually opens between April and May and closes with heavy snow between November and January; the exact dates depend on the year's snowfall and clearing work.
  • Amarnath Yatra: the 2026 yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August (Raksha Bandhan). During the yatra, Pahalgam and Sonamarg (Baltal) see security convoys, extra traffic and fuller hotels; tourists can still visit both, but plan driving days around yatra movement.
  • Chillai Kalan: the harshest 40 days of winter, 21 December to 31 January.
  • Saffron bloom: a short window around late October and early November at Pampore, on the way to Pahalgam.
  • Closures: some spots around Pahalgam, such as Baisaran meadow, have stayed closed to visitors since 2025. We check which places are open before finalising the plan.

As a rough guide, the same hotel can cost 30 to 60% more in late May or the Christmas week than in March or October, and flight fares swing even more. The cheapest combination of good weather and low prices is usually March, October or the first half of November.

What to pack for each season

Summer (mid-May – August)Cotton clothes for Srinagar days, a fleece or light jacket for Gulmarg, Sonamarg and nights, sturdy shoes for the meadowsSunscreen, a cap, a rain jacket for July showers; a warm layer for the Thajiwas glacier walk
Autumn (September – mid-November)Layers: full-sleeve tops, a sweater and a warm jacket for nights that drop near freezing by NovemberMoisturiser for dry air; a woollen cap and gloves from late October

In every season, carry a postpaid SIM or ask us to arrange local connectivity, since prepaid connections from other states do not work in Jammu and Kashmir, and keep some cash for pony rides and small shops.

Our honest recommendation

  1. First visit with family: mid-April to mid-June. If you can avoid the last week of May and the first half of June, you get the same weather with fewer people.
  2. Honeymoon: the first half of April for tulips, or late October to mid-November for chinars and quiet houseboats.
  3. Parents above 65: late April to early June, or September. Avoid the icy months.
  4. Snow: January and February at Gulmarg, with a spare day for flight delays.
  5. Combined Kashmir and Ladakh: late June to mid-September, when the Srinagar–Leh road is normally open.

Whichever month you choose, plan at least five nights so that Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg each get a proper day. Ready itineraries for every season, with live prices, are on our Kashmir tour packages page; travellers starting from Delhi can see flight, Vande Bharat and road options on Kashmir from Delhi.

Best Time to Visit Kashmir: FAQs

Which is the best month to visit Kashmir?

For most travellers, April to June: green valleys, every road open and Srinagar between about 15 and 30°C. April adds the Tulip Garden. For snow, choose January or February. For autumn colours, fewer people and lower prices, choose late October or the first half of November. July and August are pleasant but busy with the Amarnath Yatra.

When does it snow in Kashmir?

Snow usually arrives at Gulmarg and Pahalgam in December, sometimes late November, and lasts on the ground until February or March. January and February are the most reliable months. Srinagar gets snowfall on some days in December to February. Snow remains on Gulmarg's upper slopes and Sonamarg's glaciers into May, so summer visitors can still touch snow.

When is the Tulip Garden open in Srinagar?

It opens for about a month each spring, depending on the bloom. In 2026 the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opened on 16 March and closed on 16 April. The first half of April usually has the fullest bloom. Dates for 2027 will be announced shortly before the opening, so plan a late-March or early-April trip and confirm.

Is Kashmir good to visit in December?

Yes, if you want snow and can handle cold. Gulmarg and Pahalgam usually have snow by late December, Srinagar days are around 9°C and nights below freezing. Christmas and New Year are very busy and expensive at Gulmarg. Early December can be cold without much snow yet, so the second half of the month is safer for snow.

Is it safe to visit Kashmir during the Amarnath Yatra?

Tourists visit Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg throughout the yatra, which ran from 3 July to 28 August in 2026. Security is heavy and convoys can slow traffic on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads at set times. Hotels near the base camps fill up. We plan driving days around yatra movement and check advisories before you travel.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir for a honeymoon?

The first half of April gives tulips and blossom with mild days; late October to mid-November gives chinar colours, quiet houseboats and crisp weather; January and February give snow-covered Gulmarg. Late May and June are the most crowded months, with queues at the gondola and gardens, so many couples avoid them.

Which is the cheapest time to visit Kashmir?

March and October to mid-November, outside Diwali week, usually have the lowest hotel rates and calm sightseeing. The most expensive periods are mid-May to June, when school holidays fill the valley, and the Christmas to New Year week at Gulmarg. Exact costs by season are explained in our Kashmir trip cost guide.

Is Sonamarg open in winter now?

Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road from Srinagar to Sonamarg stays usable in winter except during heavy snowfall, so Sonamarg can be visited in snow season. The Zojila pass beyond Sonamarg, which leads to Kargil and Leh, still closes for winter and usually reopens between April and May.

Is April a good time to visit Kashmir with senior citizens?

April is one of the best months for seniors. Srinagar is around 7 to 20°C, gardens and the Tulip Garden are at their best, paths are free of ice, and Gulmarg still has some snow to see from the gondola. Carry a warm jacket for evenings and Gulmarg, and keep sightseeing days short with rests in between.

How cold is Gulmarg in January?

Very cold. Day maximums hover around 0°C and nights fall to about −9°C or lower, with deep snow on the ground. Thermal inner wear, a heavy jacket, waterproof gloves and boots with grip are essential. Snow boots and long coats can be hired at Gulmarg. Heated rooms are standard in better hotels; check before you book.

What should I wear in Kashmir in May?

Light cotton clothes for Srinagar, where days reach about 25°C, plus a sweater or fleece and a light jacket for Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and the evenings, which drop to single digits. Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen are useful, and a light rain jacket helps on showery afternoons.
