Weekend Getaways from Ahmedabad: 18 Trips from Our Home City
Lakes in Udaipur, Dilwara's marble, Polo Forest in the rain, lions at Sasan and the White Rann under a full moon – ranked by distance and season by a team that lives in Ahmedabad.
This is the one weekend guide we can write as locals. Vibrant Holidays works from C G Road, and most of our team has done the Saturday-morning run up the Himmatnagar highway to Polo Forest or the long Sunday drive back from Sasan Gir more times than we can count. Ahmedabad is unusually well placed: Rajasthan's lake city and its only hill station are four hours away, Gujarat's heritage belt – Modhera, Patan, Champaner – is closer still, and the long drives to the Saurashtra coast and Kutch reward a three-day break with lions, a Jyotirlinga on the sea and the White Rann.
Below is every useful getaway from Ahmedabad in one table, with distance, drive hours, whether the train or a short flight beats the car, the months to go and who each place suits. Then come grouped notes, sample plans for two days, a Gujarat long-weekend calendar for November 2026 to the end of 2027, food notes for Gujarati and Jain families, and cost bands per couple. You can plan the whole thing yourself from this page; if you would rather hand it over, walk into our office or message us on WhatsApp and a private car and driver will pick you up from home.

Every getaway from Ahmedabad, compared
Distances are by road from central Ahmedabad (Ashram Road / C G Road) and rounded. Hours assume a private car leaving at 6 am with one breakfast stop; the SG Highway and Narol exits on Friday evening add 45 minutes to an hour.

The rule of thumb from our desk: up to Udaipur and Mount Abu is a comfortable two-day trip. Anything in Saurashtra or Kutch – Gir, Diu, Somnath, Dwarka, the White Rann – is a long-weekend trip, or it turns into fourteen hours in the car for one day of sightseeing.
Within 3 hours: birds, step-wells, a hill temple and a forest
Nal Sarovar and Thol
Flamingos, pelicans and cranes winter on the shallow lake from roughly November to February. Hire a boat from the forest department jetty at first light; by 10 am the birds move to the far shore. Thol lake, closer to the city near Kadi, is smaller and gentler for children. There is little to stay at, so this is a day out, or the first half of a Saturday that ends in Modhera.
Modhera and Patan
The Sun Temple at Modhera, with its stepped kund, and Rani ki Vav at Patan, a UNESCO-listed step-well carved like an upside-down temple, are 30 minutes apart. Add the Patola weavers' houses in Patan, where a single double-ikat saree can take months, and the Sahastralinga Talav. The Modhera Dance Festival, usually in the third week of January after Uttarayan, puts classical performers on the temple steps.
Champaner–Pavagadh
A UNESCO World Heritage Site that most Amdavadis drive past on the way to Vadodara. The Jama Masjid and the city walls of Champaner are below; the Mahakali temple on Pavagadh hill is reached by ropeway and steps. In the monsoon the hill is wrapped in cloud and the drive past Halol is among the prettiest in central Gujarat. Navratri and full-moon days bring very long ropeway queues.
Polo Forest
Near Vijaynagar in Sabarkantha, a dry deciduous forest with the ruins of 15th-century Jain and Shiva temples along the Harnav river, the Harnav dam and the Polo Utsav that Gujarat Tourism has held in winter. It is best from July to October, when the streams run and the forest is green; the camp sites and a few resorts book out on monsoon Sundays.
3 to 6 hours: Statue of Unity, Mount Abu, Udaipur and Palitana
- Statue of Unity and Ekta Nagar: the viewing gallery inside Sardar Patel's statue, the Valley of Flowers, Sardar Sarovar dam viewpoints, the jungle safari park, the children's nutrition park and the evening laser show fill two days. The complex is closed on Mondays for maintenance, so never plan a Sunday–Monday trip. Book viewing-gallery tickets online for weekends; the express slot costs more but saves a long queue. Tent City and the Ekta Nagar hotels are well run and serve good Gujarati food.
- Mount Abu: Rajasthan's only hill station sits at about 1,200 m. The Dilwara Jain temples are the reason many Gujarati families go; for non-Jain visitors they usually open around midday to evening, photography is not allowed inside and a dress code applies. Nakki Lake boating, Sunset Point and Guru Shikhar fill the rest. Combine with Ambaji darshan on the way up.
- Udaipur: the Asarwa–Udaipur Vande Bharat has made Udaipur a true no-drive weekend, at about 4¼ hours with stops at Himmatnagar and Dungarpur; it does not run on one weekday, so check the day before you book. City Palace, a Lake Pichola boat at sunset, Saheliyon ki Bari and Bagore ki Haveli's dance show in the evening are the essentials. With a third day add Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur. See our Rajasthan guide from Ahmedabad.
- Palitana: the Shatrunjaya hill, with its hundreds of Jain temples, is climbed on foot (about 3,500 steps) or by doli. Start before sunrise; nothing is eaten on the hill, so dharamshalas and bhojanshalas at the base are where the day's food happens. The pilgrimage traditionally pauses during Chaturmas, the monsoon months.
- Velavadar: the grassland park near Bhavnagar holds large herds of blackbuck plus harriers in winter roosts. A morning safari and a night in Bhavnagar make a different kind of weekend.
Long-weekend trips: Gir, Diu, Somnath, Dwarka, Kutch and Saputara
Sasan Gir and Somnath
The only wild Asiatic lions live here. Core-zone jeep safaris run from 16 October to 15 June and are booked on the forest department's official permit site, often weeks ahead for weekends and Diwali; the Devalia interpretation zone stays open through the monsoon. Somnath is about an hour and a half away, so a three-day plan of two safaris plus the Somnath evening aarti and light-and-sound show works well.
Diu
Nagoa and Ghoghla beaches, the Portuguese fort, St Paul's church and quiet lanes. Diu is a Union Territory, which is part of its appeal for some weekenders, and the reason the Una check-post is busy on Saturdays. Small-aircraft flights from Ahmedabad operate on some days of the week and save a seven-hour drive, but seats are few and schedules change, so we confirm before planning around them.
The White Rann and Dholavira
Rann Utsav 2026–27 runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at the Dhordo tent city. You need an entry permit for the White Rann, available online or at the Bhirandiyara check-post. Plan around the full moon for the night view, add Kala Dungar and the craft villages of Hodka and Nirona, and fit in Dholavira's Harappan city and its fossil park on a separate day. The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and other trains link Ahmedabad and Bhuj in about 5½–7 hours for those who prefer not to drive.
Dwarka and Shivrajpur
The Dwarkadhish temple, Bet Dwarka across the Signature Bridge, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and the Blue Flag beach at Shivrajpur. Trains are convenient; on Janmashtami the town is packed and hotel rates jump sharply.
Saputara
Gujarat's hill station in the Dang forest, about 1,000 m up. The Monsoon Festival, usually running from late July through August, brings Dang folk performances and parasailing; the Gira falls near Waghai are at their best in the rain. Outside the monsoon, it is a calm lake town with a ropeway and sunrise points. From Ahmedabad it is a long drive, so many families split it with a night in Surat or Vadodara.

- Sunday: Sajjangarh at opening; Saheliyon ki Bari; Bagore ki Haveli museum; evening train or car back.

- Sunday: forest walk with a local guide; Lakhena temples; Idar's hill fort on the way back.

Janmashtami (25 August 2027) and Samvatsari (4 September 2027) are mid-week and Saturday holidays respectively. During Navratri the city itself is the destination for most families, and hotels in Pavagadh and Ambaji fill with pilgrims.
Gujarati and Jain food on the road
- Easy everywhere in Gujarat: Ekta Nagar, Sasan, Somnath, Dwarka, Palitana and the Rann Utsav tent city all serve Gujarati thali, and Jain food (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) is widely understood.
- Mount Abu and Udaipur: plenty of Gujarati and Rajasthani pure-veg restaurants catering to the Gujarat crowd; Jain bhojanshalas near Dilwara; most good hotels cook Jain meals with notice.
- Diu: the town is seafood-heavy, but vegetarian restaurants exist and hotels cook Gujarati veg on request; Jain options are limited, so we brief the hotel in writing.
- Polo Forest and Saputara: food is simple; camps and resorts cook vegetarian and Jain food when told in advance. Carry thepla, khakhra and snacks for the drive.
- Chauvihar: many Jain travellers finish dinner before sunset; we ask hotels and camps to serve early and note it on the voucher.
Indicative cost per couple
Ranges for two people and two nights. The car column is a private sedan with driver from your home in Ahmedabad and back, with tolls; an Innova Crysta adds about a third. Diwali, Christmas and Rann Utsav full-moon dates cost noticeably more. These are planning figures, not quotes.
| Getaway | Mid-range stay, 2 nights | Premium stay, 2 nights | Private car with driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polo Forest or Champaner | ₹6,000 – 12,000 | ₹15,000 – 28,000 | ₹6,000 – 8,000 |

| Mount Abu | ₹7,000 – 13,000 | ₹18,000 – 35,000 | ₹8,500 – 11,000 |
| Udaipur | ₹8,000 – 16,000 | ₹25,000 – 80,000 | ₹9,500 – 12,500, or Vande Bharat fares |
| Sasan Gir (safari fees extra) | ₹9,000 – 16,000 | ₹22,000 – 45,000 | ₹13,000 – 17,000 |
| Diu or Saputara | ₹7,000 – 14,000 | ₹16,000 – 32,000 | ₹13,500 – 18,000 |

Which is the best weekend getaway from Ahmedabad?
Udaipur is the best all-round choice: about four hours by car or the Vande Bharat from Asarwa, with lakes, palaces and good vegetarian food. Mount Abu is the pick for cooler weather, Polo Forest for the monsoon and the Statue of Unity for families with children. For a long weekend, Gir with Somnath is hard to beat.
Which hill station is nearest to Ahmedabad?
Mount Abu in Rajasthan is the nearest true hill station, about 225 km or four to four and a half hours by road. Saputara is Gujarat's own hill station but is about 400 km away, seven to eight hours by car. Pavagadh and Polo Forest are closer for green hills, though neither is a hill station.
What are the best one-day trips from Ahmedabad?
Nal Sarovar for birds in winter, Modhera Sun Temple with Rani ki Vav at Patan, Champaner and the Pavagadh ropeway, Thol lake, Adalaj step-well and Lothal's Harappan dock are all comfortable day trips. Polo Forest is possible in a day but more enjoyable with a night at a camp or resort nearby.
Is the Statue of Unity open every day?
No. The Statue of Unity and most attractions at Ekta Nagar are closed on Mondays for maintenance. Plan a Saturday–Sunday or a Tuesday visit instead. Book viewing-gallery tickets online for weekends and holidays, when queues can be long, and leave time for the evening laser show near the statue.
Can I go to Udaipur from Ahmedabad by train?
Yes. The Vande Bharat between Asarwa (Ahmedabad) and Udaipur City takes about 4¼ hours, stopping at Himmatnagar and Dungarpur, and does not run on one day each week. Other trains on the broad-gauge line take longer. The train makes Udaipur a stress-free two-day trip without driving through the ghats.
When is Gir National Park open for safari?
The core Gir safari runs from 16 October to 15 June and closes for the monsoon. Permits are sold on the forest department's official website and sell out early for weekends, Diwali and Christmas. The Devalia safari park zone stays open in the monsoon, so a Gir trip is possible year-round with that option.
When is Rann Utsav 2026–27?
Rann Utsav 2026–27 runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at the Dhordo tent city in Kutch. The white salt desert is best from December to February, and full-moon nights are the most popular. Visitors need an entry permit for the White Rann; we arrange it along with the tent booking. Rules change, so we recheck before you travel.
Where can we go from Ahmedabad in the monsoon?
Polo Forest, Saputara (with its Monsoon Festival), Champaner–Pavagadh, the Statue of Unity with the dam overflowing, and Mount Abu are all at their greenest from July to September. Avoid Gir core safaris, which close, Velavadar, also closed, and the White Rann, which is under water and not worth visiting.
Which weekend trips from Ahmedabad suit Jain families?
Palitana for Shatrunjaya, Mount Abu for the Dilwara temples, Ranakpur with Udaipur, and Taranga hills near Mehsana are the main Jain pilgrimages within a weekend. Food is easy on all these routes, with bhojanshalas near the temples. We note Jain and chauvihar meal timings on hotel vouchers.
How much does a weekend trip from Ahmedabad cost for a couple?
For two nights, a mid-range stay costs roughly ₹6,000 to ₹16,000 for a couple, and a private sedan with driver about ₹6,000 to ₹18,500 depending on distance. Gir safaris, Statue of Unity tickets and the White Rann permit are extra. Tent-city stays at Rann Utsav cost more because meals and activities are included.
Can I visit your office to plan a weekend trip?
Yes. Our office is on the 2nd floor of Ashish Complex, above the Liberty showroom at Swastik Cross Roads, C G Road, open Monday to Saturday. You can also plan entirely on WhatsApp or by calling 1800-313-4262; the itinerary, vouchers and invoice come as PDFs either way.
