Weekend Getaways from Delhi: 15 Two-Day Trips Compared
Distance, real drive time, the train that saves your Saturday, the best months and a one-line verdict for fifteen escapes from Delhi and NCR – with sample plans and honest budgets.
A good weekend away from Delhi is decided less by the destination than by the hours you spend reaching it. Friday-evening traffic out of Gurugram or Noida can add two hours to any plan, and a Sunday return on the Murthal or Ghaziabad stretches can wipe out the calm you went for. So this guide starts with the numbers that matter: road distance, the realistic drive time leaving early on a Saturday, the train that does the same journey without the stress, and the months when each place is actually pleasant.
We cover fifteen getaways in three bands – under three hours, three to five hours, and the longer "Friday night start" trips – and add a two-day plan for the most popular ones, traffic tips including the new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, budget bands and the private-car options that most families end up choosing. One honest note: Vibrant Holidays is based in Ahmedabad, not Delhi. We plan Delhi and NCR trips entirely on WhatsApp and phone, book the hotels and the car with driver, and stay on call through the weekend. If you just want ideas, the tables below are free to use.

Weekend getaways from Delhi at a glance
Road times assume leaving central Delhi around 6 am on a Saturday; add 1–2 hours for a Friday-evening departure or a Sunday-afternoon return. Train times are for the fastest regular service and exclude the drive at the far end.
| Getaway | Distance by road | Drive time | Fastest train | Best months | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neemrana | 125 km | 2–2½ hrs | None useful | Oct–Mar | The laziest palace weekend; zip-line at the fort |
| Vrindavan and Mathura | 160 km | 2½–3 hrs | Gatimaan / Vande Bharat to Mathura, about 1½–2 hrs | Oct–Mar; Holi week | Best day-and-a-half pilgrimage from Delhi |
| Alwar and Sariska | 165 km | 3–3½ hrs | Trains to Alwar, about 2½–3 hrs | Oct–Jun (park shuts in monsoon) | Tiger reserve plus Bala Quila; under-rated |
| Agra | 230 km | 3–3½ hrs (Yamuna Expressway) | Gatimaan or Vande Bharat, about 1¾–2 hrs | Oct–Mar | Do it by train; Taj at sunrise is the point |
| Bharatpur (Keoladeo) | 190 km | 3½–4 hrs | About 2½–3 hrs | Nov–Feb for migratory birds | A winter-only treat; pair with Fatehpur Sikri |
| Rishikesh | 240 km | 3½–4½ hrs via the new expressway | Vande Bharat to Haridwar/Dehradun, about 4–4½ hrs | Sep–Nov, Feb–May | Rafting, cafés, Ganga aarti – the all-round winner |
| Jaipur | 280 km | 4–4½ hrs | Vande Bharat or Shatabdi, about 4½ hrs | Oct–Mar | Most to see in two days; avoid May–June heat |
| Kasauli | 290 km | 5–6 hrs | Kalka Shatabdi, about 4 hrs, then 1 hr up | Mar–Jun, Sep–Dec | Quiet cantonment hills, no Mall Road crush |
| Mussoorie | 290 km | 4½–5 hrs via the expressway | Vande Bharat to Dehradun, then 1¼ hrs up | Mar–Jun, Sep–Dec | Classic hill station; book away from Mall Road |
| Lansdowne | 260 km | 6–7 hrs | Trains to Kotdwar, then 1½ hrs up | Mar–Jun, Sep–Dec | Silent pine-forest cantonment; little to "do" |
| Jim Corbett (Ramnagar) | 260 km | 5–6 hrs | Overnight train to Ramnagar | Nov–Jun (core zones) | Safari weekend; permits decide everything |
| Nainital | 310 km | 6½–7½ hrs | Shatabdi to Kathgodam, about 5½–6 hrs, then 1½ hrs | Mar–Jun, Oct–Dec | Lake town; best as a long weekend |
| Chakrata | 330 km | 6½–7½ hrs | Vande Bharat to Dehradun, then about 3 hrs | Mar–Jun, Oct–Dec | Offbeat, forest and Tiger Falls; basic stays |
| Mcleodganj | 480 km | 10–11 hrs | Overnight Volvo or flight to Kangra (Gaggal) | Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov | Only as a 3-day weekend with an overnight bus |
| Kufri and Shimla | 350 km | 7–8 hrs | Kalka Shatabdi, then road or toy train | Mar–Jun; Jan for snow chances | Better as a long weekend than a 2-day trip |
The quick rule we give Delhi callers: for a true two-day weekend, stay within five hours. Nainital, Chakrata, Shimla and Mcleodganj make sense only when you have a Friday or Monday holiday, or when you are happy to travel overnight.
Under 3 hours: Neemrana, Vrindavan, Alwar and Agra
Neemrana – the stress-free palace break
The 15th-century hill fort turned heritage hotel is two hours down NH48 towards Jaipur. You arrive by breakfast, wander the terraces, take the zip-line tour across the hills, swim and eat. It suits couples and parents who want a change of scene without a long car day. There is nothing else in Neemrana town, so this is a hotel weekend, not a sightseeing one.
Vrindavan and Mathura – darshan in a day and a half
The Yamuna Expressway makes Vrindavan an easy run. A sensible plan is Banke Bihari and ISKCON on Saturday, the evening aarti at Prem Mandir with its light show, then Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Govardhan parikrama by car on Sunday. Banke Bihari darshan timings change with the season and the crowds on weekends are intense; keep phones and wallets secure, and avoid Janmashtami and Holi unless crowds are the point.
Alwar and Sariska – a tiger reserve most Delhiites skip
Sariska Tiger Reserve has a recovering tiger population, plus the Bhangarh ruins and Siliserh Lake nearby. Book the gypsy or canter safari for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning; the park is generally closed to tourists from July to September. Good for families with school children who have already done Agra and Jaipur.
Agra – go by train, not car
Agra is the classic Delhi weekend, but most people do it wrong by driving and reaching the Taj Mahal at noon with the crowds. The Gatimaan Express or the Vande Bharat from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi reaches Agra Cantt in under two hours. Stay overnight, see the Taj at sunrise on Sunday (it is closed every Friday), then Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh for the sunset view across the river. Add Fatehpur Sikri on the way back if you have a car.
Three to five hours: Rishikesh, Jaipur, Mussoorie, Kasauli and Bharatpur
Rishikesh
Rishikesh does everything a Delhi weekend needs: white-water rafting from Shivpuri (usually September to June), the Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, Beatles Ashram, cafés in Tapovan and riverside camps. The new expressway has cut the drive noticeably. Rafting stops in the monsoon months, and camps by the river are closed when the Ganga is high.
Jaipur
Two days in Jaipur covers Amer Fort, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, with an evening at Nahargarh for the city lights and a Rajasthani thali at Chokhi Dhani. Leave early on Saturday or take the morning train, and buy the composite monument ticket. From April to June the afternoons are too hot for forts.
Mussoorie
The Mall Road and Kempty Falls are crowded on every weekend, but Landour, Char Dukan, Lal Tibba and the walk to George Everest's House are calm. Stay in Landour or on the Dhanaulti road to escape the traffic jam at Library Chowk.
Kasauli
A small cantonment town reached from the Kalka road, with Christ Church, Monkey Point (inside an Air Force area, open in set hours with ID) and quiet walks. Pair with Chail or the Timber Trail cable car at Parwanoo. Ideal for couples who dislike crowds.
Bharatpur
Keoladeo National Park is a UNESCO-listed wetland where thousands of migratory birds winter from about November to February. Hire a cycle-rickshaw with a park-trained guide and spend a full morning inside. Out of season it is pleasant but empty.
Longer weekends: Corbett, Lansdowne, Nainital, Chakrata and Mcleodganj
- Jim Corbett: safari permits for the zones open on the online portal and are released in fixed quotas; Dhikala and Bijrani go weeks ahead on long weekends. Jhirna and Dhela zones open all year, while the core zones close for the monsoon. Stay near Ramnagar for easy gate access, and carry the same photo ID used on the permit.
- Lansdowne: pine and oak forests, Bhulla Tal, St Mary's Church and Tip-n-Top viewpoint. Very little nightlife or shopping. Perfect for reading, walking and sleeping; less so for teenagers.
- Nainital: boating on Naini Lake, the ropeway to Snow View, and drives to Bhimtal, Sattal and Mukteshwar. On a two-day trip you spend half the time on the road; with a Friday holiday it becomes a relaxed three days.
- Chakrata: a restricted cantonment where foreign nationals need permission; Indian travellers are fine. Tiger Falls, Deoban and Budher caves, and homestays rather than hotels. For people who want to be offline.
- Mcleodganj: leave on Friday night by Volvo, reach early Saturday, see the Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsu, and walk part of the Triund trail or Naddi viewpoint, then return on Sunday night. Flights to Kangra (Gaggal) save time but cost more.
For a snow weekend from Delhi in winter, see our guide to snow places in India in December – Kufri, Narkanda and Chakrata are the nearest, but snow there is far from certain before January.
Sample two-day plans
Rishikesh: rafting and aarti
- Saturday: leave Delhi at 5.30 am via the expressway; breakfast stop near Saharanpur or Dehradun. Reach Shivpuri by 11 am for a 16 km rafting run; lunch in Tapovan; check in; Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan at sunset.
- Sunday: sunrise walk across Ram Jhula, Beatles Ashram, a short drive to Neer Garh waterfall; leave by 2 pm to reach Delhi before the evening rush.
Jaipur: forts and food
- Saturday: 6 am start; Amer Fort by 11 am; Jal Mahal and Panna Meena ka Kund; check in; sunset at Nahargarh; dinner at Chokhi Dhani.
- Sunday: City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal in the morning; shopping at Johari and Bapu Bazaar; leave by 3 pm.
Agra and Vrindavan by train and car
- Saturday: morning train to Agra; Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh at sunset.
- Sunday: Taj Mahal at opening; drive to Vrindavan (about 1½ hours); Prem Mandir and ISKCON; back to Delhi by evening on the Yamuna Expressway.
Mussoorie and Landour: slow hills
- Saturday: expressway to Dehradun, up to Mussoorie by lunch; Company Garden and Camel's Back Road walk; dinner in Landour.
- Sunday: sunrise at Lal Tibba; Char Dukan breakfast; Sister's Bazaar; descend by 1 pm.
Traffic tips and the new expressways
- Delhi–Dehradun Expressway: the roughly 210 km access-controlled corridor from Akshardham via Baghpat and Saharanpur was fully opened in April 2026, cutting Delhi–Dehradun to about 2½ hours on a clear run. It includes a 12 km elevated wildlife stretch through the Rajaji forest. It changes Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Chakrata weekends more than any other route. Tolls are higher than the old NH58 route via Meerut and Muzaffarnagar.
- Delhi–Mumbai Expressway: the opened stretches from Sohna towards Dausa make the Jaipur, Alwar and Bharatpur runs smoother; on weekends many drivers still prefer NH48 for Neemrana and Jaipur because of fuel and food stops.
- Yamuna Expressway: the fastest way to Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra; watch speed cameras and avoid the dense-fog early mornings of December–January.
- Leave before 6 am or after 9 pm. The exits at Kashmere Gate, Ghazipur, Rajokri and the Gurugram toll plaza jam by 8 am on Saturdays.
- Return on Sunday by 3 pm, or stay until Monday dawn. The last 30 km into Delhi on Sunday evening often takes as long as the previous 150.
- Long weekends: Republic Day, Holi, Good Friday, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra and Christmas push hill-station hotels to full occupancy; book three to four weeks ahead and expect checkpoints or one-way traffic rules at Mussoorie and Nainital.
- FASTag and parking: keep FASTag topped up; hill towns charge for parking, and Nainital sometimes restricts private cars into town on peak days.
Budget bands for a Delhi weekend
Per person for two nights on twin sharing, hotel with breakfast; the private-car column covers a sedan with driver for the whole weekend shared between two people. Long-weekend dates run 25–40% above these figures.
| Getaway | Budget stay | Comfort (3–4 star) | Premium / resort | Private sedan + driver (per person, 2 sharing) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neemrana / Alwar | ₹3,000 – 5,000 | ₹6,000 – 10,000 | ₹12,000 – 22,000 | ₹2,500 – 3,500 |
| Agra / Vrindavan | ₹2,500 – 4,500 | ₹5,000 – 9,000 | ₹12,000 – 25,000 | ₹3,000 – 4,500 |
| Jaipur | ₹3,000 – 5,000 | ₹6,000 – 11,000 | ₹15,000 – 35,000 | ₹4,000 – 5,500 |
| Rishikesh | ₹2,500 – 4,500 (camps) | ₹5,500 – 10,000 | ₹14,000 – 40,000 | ₹4,000 – 5,500 |
| Mussoorie / Kasauli / Lansdowne | ₹3,000 – 5,500 | ₹6,500 – 12,000 | ₹15,000 – 30,000 | ₹4,500 – 6,000 |
| Jim Corbett | ₹3,500 – 6,000 | ₹7,000 – 13,000 | ₹16,000 – 35,000 | ₹4,500 – 6,000 plus safari |
| Nainital / Chakrata | ₹3,000 – 5,500 | ₹6,500 – 12,000 | ₹14,000 – 28,000 | ₹5,000 – 7,000 |
Extra on the ground: rafting (about ₹600–1,500 per person by distance), Corbett safari permits and gypsy hire, Sariska and Keoladeo entry, Taj Mahal and Amer tickets, and parking. For families of four to six, an Innova Crysta or a Tempo Traveller usually costs less per person than two sedans and keeps everyone together.
Private car with driver: how we plan Delhi weekends
Most Delhi and NCR families who call us want one thing: a reliable car that picks them up at home, a driver who knows the hill roads, and a hotel that has been checked. Here is how it works when you book with us from anywhere in NCR.
- Tell us on WhatsApp or phone: dates, number of people, ages, budget and the kind of weekend you want – active, spiritual, lazy or wildlife.
- Get two or three options with named hotels, the vehicle type and a day plan as a PDF, usually the same day.
- Confirm and pay by bank transfer or UPI against a GST invoice. Hotel vouchers, the driver's name and number and the pick-up time follow before the weekend.
- Travel: our team in Ahmedabad stays reachable 24×7 on WhatsApp while you are on the road, and coordinates directly with the driver and hotel if anything changes.
Every weekend is a private trip – your car, your timings, no shared coach. Larger families and friend circles travel together as a private group on their own dates, with a Tempo Traveller and adjoining rooms. Pure-veg and Jain meals can be arranged on request; they are easy in Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Jaipur and more limited in Corbett and Chakrata. See all tour packages from Delhi, our Manali guide for Delhi travellers, Uttarakhand packages and Rajasthan packages.
Vibrant Holidays has been in business since 2015 and works from its office on C G Road, Ahmedabad (Monday to Saturday). We are IATA-accredited, members of TAAI, TAFI, ADTOI and IATO, and recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. We do not have a Delhi office; everything is arranged remotely.

Which is the best weekend getaway from Delhi?
Rishikesh is the best all-rounder because it offers rafting, the Ganga aarti, cafés and riverside camps, and the new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has shortened the drive. Jaipur is best for sightseeing between October and March. For a lazy break within two hours, choose Neemrana. For hills without crowds, Kasauli or Lansdowne.
Which hill station is nearest to Delhi?
By drive time, Mussoorie, Kasauli and Lansdowne are the closest true hill stations, at roughly 4½ to 7 hours. Mussoorie is now quicker thanks to the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway. Dhanaulti sits just beyond Mussoorie. Shimla and Nainital are further, around 7 to 8 hours by road, and work better on a long weekend.
What are the best weekend getaways from Delhi under 200 km?
Neemrana (about 125 km), Vrindavan and Mathura (about 160 km), Alwar and Sariska (about 165 km) and Bharatpur (about 190 km) are all under 200 km. Sohna and Damdama Lake are even closer for a single day out. Agra, at about 230 km, is just beyond but takes under two hours by the Gatimaan or Vande Bharat train.
Is the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway open?
Yes. The roughly 210 km expressway from Akshardham in Delhi to Dehradun via Baghpat and Saharanpur was fully opened in April 2026. On a clear run it brings Dehradun to about 2½ hours, Rishikesh and Mussoorie to around 3½ to 5 hours. Tolls are higher than the older Meerut road, but most travellers find the time saving worth it.
Can I visit Agra from Delhi in one weekend?
Easily. Take the morning Gatimaan Express or Vande Bharat to Agra Cantt, which takes under two hours. See Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh on Saturday, the Taj Mahal at sunrise on Sunday, then return by train or drive back via Vrindavan. Remember the Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday.
Where can we go from Delhi for a weekend in summer?
In May and June head to the hills: Mussoorie, Landour, Kasauli, Lansdowne, Chakrata, Nainital or Mcleodganj. Rishikesh is hot but good for rafting and camps by the river. Avoid Jaipur, Agra, Neemrana and Bharatpur in summer, as afternoons cross 40°C. Book early, since Delhi school holidays fill hill hotels.
Where can we go from Delhi for a weekend in winter?
October to March is the best time for Jaipur, Agra, Neemrana, Alwar and Sariska, Vrindavan and Bharatpur, where migratory birds arrive from November. Corbett safaris are excellent in winter. For snow, try Kufri, Narkanda or Chakrata in January, but snow is not guaranteed at these lower hill stations.
How much does a weekend trip from Delhi cost?
For two nights on twin sharing with breakfast, budget stays cost about ₹2,500–5,500 per person, comfortable 3–4 star hotels ₹5,000–13,000, and resorts ₹12,000–40,000. A private sedan with driver adds roughly ₹2,500–7,000 per person for two people sharing. Long weekends cost 25–40% more.
Is it better to drive or take the train for a Delhi weekend?
For Agra, Jaipur, Haridwar and Dehradun, fast trains like the Vande Bharat, Gatimaan and Shatabdi save time and fatigue. For hill stations and wildlife parks, a car is more practical, as stations are far from the hotels. Many families combine both: train one way and a car with driver for sightseeing and the return.
Do you have an office in Delhi for booking weekend trips?
No. Vibrant Holidays is based on C G Road in Ahmedabad and plans Delhi and NCR weekends entirely on WhatsApp and phone. You receive the itinerary, hotel names and quote as PDFs, pay against a proper invoice, and our team stays reachable 24×7 during the trip, coordinating with your driver and hotel.
Which weekend getaways from Delhi suit senior citizens?
Neemrana, Vrindavan, Agra by train and Jaipur suit seniors best because drives are short, roads are flat and hotels have lifts. Haridwar with Rishikesh works well for a spiritual weekend. Mussoorie and Kasauli are fine with a hotel close to the road. Avoid long winding drives to Chakrata or Lansdowne for elderly travellers.
