December is the month most Indian families finally have time for an international trip: school winter breaks, year-end leave and the long weekends around Christmas and New Year all line up. The best international destinations in December are not simply the famous ones, though. South-East Asia splits sharply this month – the Andaman Sea side of Thailand is at its finest while Bali sits in its wet season – and a visa that takes three days in October can take three weeks once everyone applies at the same time.

This guide is only about trips abroad; for Goa, Kashmir, Kerala and the Rann of Kutch, see our separate guide to the best places to visit in December in India. Here you get a one-line verdict for each country, the real December weather, the visa an Indian passport holder needs as of November 2026, how early to apply, an honest per-person cost band including flights, and how much more the same trip costs between about 20 December and 5 January. Our team in Ahmedabad has planned these year-end trips for 11 years, and the advice below reflects what actually sells out and where the weather lets travellers down.

International destinations in December: the quick verdict table

Costs are rough per-person totals for the suggested length on twin sharing, with return economy flights from a major Indian city, good 3- or 4-star hotels (resorts for island destinations), daily breakfast, transfers and core sightseeing, for travel between 1 and 18 December. The last column is a typical uplift for 20 December–5 January. Visa notes are as of November 2026; rules change, and we check again before you book.

Where a cost band looks much cheaper elsewhere, the difference is almost always the hotel, the meal plan, a one-stop flight with a long layover, or a shared transfer. Ask for hotel names and flight timings before comparing.

Warm and dry: the safest December choices abroad

Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Verdict: the most reliable winter city break within a short flight of India. December days are sunny and around 24°C, evenings cool enough for a light jacket in the desert camp. The 32nd Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, so malls have sales, raffles and nightly shows; Global Village and Miracle Garden are open. In Abu Dhabi, the BAPS Hindu Mandir, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World fit two easy days.

Visa: a UAE tourist e-visa arranged through a UAE sponsor before flying, normally three to five working days; visa on arrival only if you hold a valid US, UK or EU visa or certain residence permits. Abu Dhabi's promotional free-visa offer for Indians who booked three hotel nights ended on 31 October 2026, so budget the normal fee. Details are in our Dubai visa guide.

Watch out for: New Year's Eve at the Burj Khalifa. Hotels around Downtown sell 31 December as a package, restaurants with a fireworks view charge heavily, and roads close early in the evening. If the fireworks matter, book a Downtown hotel or a dinner cruise by mid-November; if they do not, travel in the first half of December and save a third.

Thailand: Phuket, Krabi, Bangkok and Pattaya

Verdict: the best value beach holiday abroad in December, provided you pick the right coast. The Andaman Sea side – Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak – is dry with calm, clear water, ideal for island-hopping. The Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is still in its rainy spell until about mid-December, so we keep it for later in the season.

Visa: as of November 2026, Indians on ordinary passports can enter visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days, a rule in force since 15 September 2026 (it replaced the earlier 60-day exemption). File the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival, and carry a return ticket, hotel bookings and proof of funds – the official guidance mentions THB 20,000 per person. Our Thailand visa guide explains the 60-day e-visa for longer stays.

Watch out for: Phuket and Krabi resorts that add a compulsory gala dinner on 24 and 31 December. See Thailand from Ahmedabad for itineraries.

Vietnam: the south, Phu Quoc and the north

Verdict: excellent in December if you route it right. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc island are in their dry season. Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are cool (about 14–21°C) and often misty, which suits sightseeing but not swimming. Central Vietnam – Da Nang and Hoi An – can still see heavy rain and occasional flooding in the first half of December, so we place it at the end of the trip or skip it.

Visa: the official e-visa costs USD 25 for single entry, allows up to 90 days and usually takes about three working days; Phu Quoc on its own has a visa exemption for short stays. See our Vietnam visa guide and Vietnam from Ahmedabad.

Sri Lanka: south and west coasts

Verdict: a strong December choice for families and seniors, as long as you stay on the right side of the island. The north-east monsoon brings rain to Trincomalee, Pasikudah and the east, while Bentota, Galle, Mirissa and Colombo dry out through the month; Kandy and Nuwara Eliya see passing showers and cool nights. Whale-watching from Mirissa starts around now.

Visa: since 25 May 2026 the 30-day tourist ETA has been free for Indians, but it must still be applied for online and approved before you fly. Our Sri Lanka visa guide lists the steps.

Maldives

Verdict: December is the start of the dry north-east monsoon, with calm lagoons and good visibility for snorkelling – and also the start of the resorts' most expensive weeks. Indians receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a confirmed resort booking and return ticket, plus the online IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours of travel. See Maldives from Ahmedabad.

Watch out for: festive minimum stays (often four to seven nights over Christmas–New Year at popular resorts), compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December charged per person, and seaplane transfers that become the biggest line on the bill.

Where December weather is mixed: book with open eyes

Bali: the wet season, honestly

Bali's rainy season runs roughly from November to March, and December is properly inside it. Expect warm, humid days with heavy showers, often in the afternoon or overnight, rather than all-day rain. Ubud's rice terraces are at their greenest, villas cost less before Christmas than in July–August, and many couples are happy with that trade. What suffers: sea conditions on the west coast, the Nusa Penida boat crossing on rough days, and sunrise treks. If the beach is the whole point, Phuket, Krabi or the Maldives are drier in December. The visa is the e-VOA (IDR 500,000, payable online before travel) plus the separate Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000; see our Bali visa guide.

Singapore

December is usually Singapore's wettest month under the north-east monsoon, yet it remains one of the most popular December trips from India because almost everything works in the rain: Gardens by the Bay's Flower Dome, Universal Studios, the S.E.A. Aquarium, Night Safari and covered walkways everywhere. Orchard Road's Christmas lights run through the month. Plan outdoor sights for mornings. The e-visa is applied for through an authorised agent and usually comes back in about a week; see our Singapore visa guide.

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur gets short tropical downpours, Genting is cool and often in cloud, and Langkawi on the west coast is entering its dry season. The east-coast islands – Perhentian, Redang, Tioman – largely close for the monsoon, so skip them. Indians currently enjoy a 30-day visa exemption that runs to 31 December 2026, plus the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card; for trips that end in January 2027, wait for the extension notice before buying non-refundable tickets. See our Malaysia visa guide.

Mauritius and Seychelles

Both are in their southern-hemisphere summer: hot, humid and greener, with short heavy showers. Mauritius' cyclone season formally begins in November, though the main risk is from January to March; early and mid-December are usually fine. Indians can visit Mauritius visa-free for up to 90 days. Seychelles gives a free visitor permit on arrival, but you must first buy the Travel Authorisation online. Both have strong festive surcharges at beach resorts from about 22 December.

Winter abroad: snow, Christmas markets and crisp cities

Europe's Christmas markets

For many Indian families, a December Europe trip means one thing: Christmas markets with lights, mulled drinks (non-alcoholic versions are easy to find), roasted chestnuts and handmade decorations. Most markets in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland open in late November and close on 23 or 24 December; a few in Vienna, Prague and Budapest continue into the first days of January. On 25 and 26 December many shops, museums and restaurants close, so a trip built around the markets should run from about 5 to 23 December.

  • Good combinations: Vienna–Salzburg–Munich; Strasbourg–Colmar with Switzerland's Lucerne and Interlaken; Prague–Vienna–Budapest by train.
  • Weather: about −3 to 10°C, with daylight from roughly 8 am to 4.30 pm in central Europe. Jungfraujoch and Titlis run in winter, but views depend on the day.
  • Visa: a Schengen visa with a €90 adult fee and a standard decision time of 15 calendar days after biometrics. Getting an appointment is the slow part. If you are reading this in early November without a visa, start immediately; our Schengen visa guide explains which embassy handles your file.

Turkey

Istanbul is cold and often rainy at 6–11°C, but crowds are thin and hotels cheaper than in spring. Cappadocia's fairy chimneys under snow are a beautiful sight; the trade-off is that sunrise balloon flights are cancelled more often in winter, so keep two nights there. Indians need a sticker visa through the application centre (plan four to six weeks), unless they hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit, which allows the online e-visa.

Japan

December in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka is cool, dry and clear, often with views of Mount Fuji; winter illuminations light up streets and parks. Snow is reliable in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps rather than the main cities. Indian residents apply through VFS Global and may receive a digital eVISA: single entry, arrival by air, stays of up to 90 days, with a standard minimum of five working days. Hotels fill for the Japanese New Year holidays from about 29 December to 3 January, when many shops and some sights also close.

Azerbaijan

The cheapest place abroad to find real snow in December. Baku is cold and windy, but Shahdag and Gabala in the Caucasus have ski slopes, cable cars and snow play suitable for families. Flights from Delhi take about four hours, and the e-visa is applied for online, usually in a few working days.

Hong Kong and Macau

Cool, dry and sunny at 14–21°C – perhaps the most comfortable weather of the year for walking the Peak, Disneyland and Ocean Park. Indians complete a free online pre-arrival registration before travel for a 14-day visit.

Southern summer: Australia in December

December is early summer in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast: long days, 18–28°C, beaches and theme parks open late, and the Sydney Harbour New Year fireworks. It is also school holiday time in Australia, so domestic flights, theme-park tickets and Gold Coast apartments are at their dearest from mid-December. The far north around Cairns enters its wet season, with stinger jellyfish nets on beaches.

The visa decides everything. The subclass 600 visitor visa (Tourist stream) is applied for online, followed by biometrics at VFS; the base charge is AUD 250 per applicant from 1 July 2026. Many tourist applications from India are decided within three to six weeks, but some take longer, and the pre-Christmas period is busy. If your file is not lodged by early November, we suggest moving Australia to February or March. See Australia from Ahmedabad for costs and routings.

Visa lead times for a December trip

Most December disappointments we see are not about weather – they are about a visa started too late. The table gives a practical "apply by" date for travel on 20 December 2026. For earlier trips, move the date back accordingly. Processing times are typical, not guaranteed; we prepare and submit your application, and approval is always at the embassy's or authority's discretion.

Children need their own visa or authorisation in every case, and every passport must have at least six months' validity from the date of arrival. A passport renewal in November can break an e-visa issued on the old number, so renew first and apply second.

The 20 December–5 January price surge, destination by destination

Indian outbound travel peaks in exactly the same fortnight as Christmas and New Year in the destination, so prices are squeezed from both sides. In 2026, Christmas falls on a Friday and New Year's Day on a Friday, which makes 24 December–3 January the most demanded window of the year.

  • Airfares: return fares from India to Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore and Colombo typically rise 40–100% for departures between 20 and 27 December, and return flights on 1–4 January are the hardest seats to find. Flying out on 18–19 December or back on 5–6 January often saves more than any hotel discount.
  • Beach resorts: in the Maldives, Phuket, Bali, Mauritius and Seychelles, a "festive supplement" period usually runs from about 22 December to 6 January, often with minimum stays and compulsory Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners charged per adult and child.
  • Cities: Dubai hotels near the Burj Khalifa price 30–31 December at several times their normal rate; Singapore and Bangkok rise less sharply.
  • Europe: hotels are fairly priced until 20 December, then rise in Paris, Vienna and the Alps; many attractions close on 25 December.
  • Japan and Australia: local holidays add their own peak – the Japanese New Year week and the Australian summer school holidays.

Three ways to beat it: travel between 1 and 18 December, when the weather in Thailand, Dubai, Vietnam and Sri Lanka is already good; choose a destination with no festive minimum stays, such as Vietnam, Azerbaijan or Sri Lanka's west coast; or celebrate New Year at home and travel from about 6 January, when rates fall back quickly. Our January travel guide covers that option.

Which December trip suits whom

  • Families with small children: Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok–Pattaya – short flights, theme parks and Indian food everywhere. Hong Kong for Disneyland in pleasant weather.
  • Families with grandparents: Dubai, Sri Lanka's west coast with Kandy, and Singapore. Avoid long one-stop flights and very cold cities unless everyone is fit for winter.
  • Honeymooners: the Maldives, Phuket–Krabi and Mauritius before 20 December; Europe's Christmas markets for a winter romance. Our honeymoon destinations abroad guide compares them by month.
  • Snow seekers: Azerbaijan for value, Turkey for scenery, Switzerland and Austria for the classic Alpine winter.
  • Tight budgets: Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam stay within about ₹50,000–1,00,000 per person in early December; see international trips under ₹1 lakh.
  • Vegetarian and Jain travellers: easiest in Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Mauritius; manageable in Sri Lanka and Bali with notice; harder in Japan, Turkey and rural Europe, where we brief hotels in advance and suggest carrying some ready-to-eat food.

Best Places to Visit Abroad in December: FAQs

Which is the best country to visit in December from India?

For most families, Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket and Krabi) or Dubai give the best mix of dry weather, short flights and value in December. Vietnam's south and Sri Lanka's west coast are close behind. For snow, choose Europe, Turkey or Azerbaijan. Bali and Singapore are workable but wetter than usual this month.

Which international destinations are cheap in December?

Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam usually cost about ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per person for five to seven nights including flights, if you travel before 20 December. Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka also charge Indians no visa fee as of November 2026. Prices rise sharply from about 20 December to 5 January.

Is December a good time to visit Bali?

December is in Bali's wet season, so expect heavy showers, usually in the afternoon or at night, with warm humid days. Ubud is very green and villas are cheaper before Christmas than in mid-year. If dry beach weather matters most, Phuket, Krabi or the Maldives are better choices in December.

Can I see snow abroad in December?

Yes. Azerbaijan's Shahdag and Gabala are the cheapest option, about four hours from Delhi. Switzerland and Austria have Alpine snow, Cappadocia in Turkey often gets snow, and Hokkaido in Japan is reliably white. Big cities such as Paris, Istanbul or Tokyo are cold in December but rarely snowy.

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand in December 2026?

No visa is needed for tourism stays of up to 30 days, under the rule in force since 15 September 2026. You must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival and carry a return ticket, hotel bookings and proof of funds. This is as of November 2026; rules can change.

Is the Abu Dhabi free visa offer still available?

No. Abu Dhabi's promotional offer, which covered the UAE entry visa for Indians who booked at least three hotel nights through participating partners, ended on 31 October 2026. For December trips, Indians need the normal UAE tourist e-visa arranged through a sponsor, which usually takes three to five working days.

How early should I apply for a visa for a December trip?

For Schengen, Turkey sticker visas and Australia, start at once if you have not already, as appointments and processing can take several weeks. E-visas for the UAE, Vietnam and Singapore need about one to two weeks of margin. Sri Lanka's free ETA and Thailand's arrival card can be done close to departure.

Is Europe worth visiting in December?

Yes, if you go for the Christmas markets and winter atmosphere rather than long sunny days. Daylight is short and temperatures are around −3 to 10°C. Most markets close on 23 or 24 December and many places shut on 25 December, so the best window is roughly 5 to 23 December.

Which is better in December, Maldives or Mauritius?

The Maldives is drier in December, at the start of its best season, with calm lagoons for snorkelling. Mauritius is in its hot, humid summer with short showers, and the cyclone season begins, though the main risk comes later. Mauritius suits longer, varied trips; the Maldives suits a short resort stay.

Is Singapore good to visit in December?

Singapore is usually at its wettest in December, but most attractions are indoors or covered, so families still enjoy it. Plan Gardens by the Bay's outdoor areas and Sentosa for mornings, and keep afternoons for Universal Studios, the aquarium or malls. Christmas lights on Orchard Road add to the season.

Why are international holidays so expensive at New Year?

Christmas and New Year are peak season both in India and in most destinations, so airfares, hotels and resorts all charge their highest rates at once. Beach resorts often add minimum stays and compulsory gala dinners. Travelling before 20 December or after 5 January usually brings the cost down considerably.
