Mumbai is boxed in by the sea on one side and the Sahyadri ghats on the other, and that geography decides every weekend plan. Head east and within two hours you are in the ghats at Lonavala, Karjat or Igatpuri. Head south across the harbour and the Konkan beaches start at Alibaug. Go further and you reach Mahabaleshwar's strawberry farms, the Nashik vineyards or the quiet coast at Dapoli. The real question is never "where" but "how": the Ro-Ro ferry, the Deccan Queen, the Samruddhi Expressway and the Atal Setu each change which getaway makes sense from which part of the city.

Below are eighteen getaways from Mumbai in one table – distance, travel hours, the best mode (road, train, ferry or flight), the months each place is worth it and who it suits – followed by grouped notes, four two-day plans, a Maharashtra long-weekend calendar to the end of 2027 and indicative costs per couple. One thing to know up front: Vibrant Holidays is based in Ahmedabad, not Mumbai. Our team plans Mumbai weekends on WhatsApp and phone and sends a private car and driver to your door. The comparison below is free to use either way.

Kilometres are by road from South-Central Mumbai (Dadar area) and rounded. Hours are for a private car leaving around 6 am on Saturday; from the western suburbs or Thane the eastern trips are shorter and the Alibaug ones longer. Friday-night exits via Vashi, Panvel or the Eastern Express Highway can add two hours.

A rule worth remembering: anywhere with a train under three hours (Lonavala, Karjat, Igatpuri, Neral for Matheran) is a fine two-day trip even on a Friday-night start. Anything past five hours of driving – Mahabaleshwar, Dapoli, Ganpatipule – deserves a Friday or Monday off.

Within 3 hours: ghats, a toy train and the ferry coast

Lonavala, Khandala and the new Missing Link

The Mumbai–Pune Expressway's Missing Link, which bypasses the old Khandala ghat with tunnels and a high viaduct, was opened on 1 May 2026, trimming the run to Lonavala and cutting the ghat-section crawl that ruined so many monsoon Sundays. Lonavala is still crowded: Bhushi Dam and Tiger Point jam from July to September, and police close some viewpoints on heavy-rain days. Go for the villa or resort, Rajmachi or Lohagad for a half-day hike, the Karla and Bhaja caves, and chikki from the Maganlal or Coopers stalls. Pawna Lake camps across the hills suit young groups.

Matheran – Asia's car-free hill station

No private vehicles go past the Dasturi car park; you walk, ride a horse, take a hand-pulled rickshaw or the e-rickshaw service the municipal council runs. The Neral–Matheran toy train usually suspends its full uphill run in the monsoon, with a shuttle between Aman Lodge and Matheran town continuing. Louisa Point, Charlotte Lake and Panorama Point fill a weekend; the red-mud paths turn slippery from June to September, so pack shoes with grip.

Alibaug and the harbour crossing

The Ro-Ro ferry from Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) to Mandwa carries your car and takes about an hour, cutting out the road entirely. Passenger catamarans from the Gateway of India to Mandwa reach in about 45–60 minutes but generally stop for the monsoon months, roughly late May to the end of August. By road, the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, opened January 2024) brings Alibaug to roughly 2½ hours from South Mumbai. Kolaba fort is reachable on foot at low tide; Varsoli and Nagaon beaches are calmer than Alibaug town.

Karjat and Igatpuri

Karjat is the villa-and-farmhouse weekend for friends, with Kondana caves and Peth fort nearby. Igatpuri, on the Nashik side, is quieter and cooler: Bhatsa river valley viewpoints, the Kalsubai trail (Maharashtra's highest peak) and the Dhamma Giri Vipassana centre, where courses are ten days and booked separately, not a weekend activity.

3 to 6 hours: Konkan coast, vineyards, waterfalls and the plateau

  • Kashid and Murud-Janjira: white sand by Konkan standards, and the island fort of Janjira reached by sailboat from Rajpuri jetty. The fort boats stop in the monsoon. Take the Mandwa ferry and drive down the coast road to save an hour.
  • Kolad: white-water rafting on the Kundalika runs on water released from a dam upstream, usually in the morning, so be at the start point by 8 am. Grade II–III, fine for first-timers above about 14.
  • Malshej Ghat and Bhandardara: Malshej is a monsoon-only drive of waterfalls over the road. Bhandardara has Arthur Lake, Randha falls and Wilson dam, and from late May to early June the fireflies around Purushwadi draw campers. Camping should be with licensed operators; avoid lakeside tents on heavy-rain warnings.
  • Nashik: vineyard tours and tastings around Gangapur Road from December to March, plus Trimbakeshwar jyotirlinga and the Panchavati ghats. Book a winery stay to avoid driving after tastings.
  • Daman: a Union Territory with Portuguese-era forts and churches, Devka and Jampore beaches and seafood shacks. Daman's liquor rules differ from Gujarat's, which explains the weekend crowd from both sides.
  • Dapoli and Harnai: Ladghar and Karde beaches, dolphin trips at dawn from Dabhol and Harnai's evening fish auction. Home-style Konkani stays run by local families are the norm, and there are a few good resorts.
  • Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani: Arthur's Seat, Venna Lake, Pratapgad fort, Mapro garden and Table Land. Many hotels and viewpoints are lashed by rain from June to September, and some resorts close; it is a winter and summer destination.
  • Shirdi: the Vande Bharat to Sainagar Shirdi and the Samruddhi Expressway have both cut travel time. Book darshan passes on the official Sai Baba Sansthan site; Thursdays and holidays are the busiest.
  • Saputara: Gujarat's only proper hill station sits just across the border near Nashik, with a lake, ropeway and the Monsoon Festival from about late July to August.

Short flights for a three-day weekend

With a Friday or Monday off, a flight from Mumbai widens the map considerably. Both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (T1 and T2) and the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, which began commercial flights at the end of December 2025, now serve domestic routes; Navi Mumbai is the easier airport from Panvel, Kharghar and parts of Thane. Flight times below are about, non-stop:

  • Goa (about 1¼ hours): Mopa for the north, Dabolim for the south. Three nights is the right length. Goa packages.
  • Udaipur (about 1¼ hours): City Palace, a boat on Lake Pichola and Bagore ki Haveli; two nights are enough for the city, three with Kumbhalgarh. Rajasthan packages.
  • Kochi (about 2 hours): Fort Kochi plus Munnar over three nights. See the Kerala guide for Mumbai travellers.
  • Hyderabad, Jaipur and Bhuj: a city break, a fort weekend or the White Rann during the Rann Utsav season from about November to February.

Four two-day plans from Mumbai

Alibaug by Ro-Ro: no traffic at all

  • Saturday: early Ro-Ro from Bhaucha Dhakka with your car; Mandwa by mid-morning; Kihim beach; check in near Nagaon; Kolaba fort walk at low tide; sunset at Varsoli.
  • Sunday: Kanakeshwar temple climb or Korlai lighthouse and fort; lunch of Konkani thali or sol kadhi with vegetarian bhakri; afternoon ferry back.

Matheran: walking weekend

  • Saturday: train to Neral; toy train or taxi up; walk to Charlotte Lake and Echo Point; sunset at Louisa Point.
  • Sunday: sunrise at Panorama Point; one more trail to One Tree Hill; descend after lunch before the Neral platform crowd builds.

Nashik wine country

  • Saturday: leave 6.30 am; Trimbakeshwar darshan before the queue grows; check in to a vineyard resort; tour and tasting; sunset over Gangapur dam.
  • Sunday: Panchavati and Kalaram temple; Pandavleni caves; second vineyard lunch; back by evening via the Samruddhi link.

Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani (best with Friday off)

  • Day 1: leave early via the expressway and Wai; Table Land at Panchgani; Mahabaleshwar by evening; Venna Lake walk.
  • Day 2: Arthur's Seat and Kate's Point; Pratapgad fort; Mapro garden; strawberry farm in season.
  • Day 3: slow breakfast; Lingmala falls if the season allows; drive back before the Sunday rush on the expressway.

Ganesh Chaturthi (4 September 2027) and Gandhi Jayanti fall on Saturdays in 2027. The monsoon weekends from July to September have no state holidays but are the busiest for Lonavala, Igatpuri and Malshej – go on a Saturday, return before 3 pm on Sunday.

What a Mumbai weekend costs a couple

Indicative ranges for two people and two nights. "Car" is a private sedan with driver from your home for the weekend, tolls and parking included in our quotes; an Innova Crysta adds roughly a third. Peak monsoon Saturdays near Lonavala, Christmas week and long weekends cost 25–50% more. These are planning ranges, not a quote.

Booking a Mumbai weekend with us

Vibrant Holidays has planned private holidays since 2015 from its C G Road office in Ahmedabad. We have no office in Mumbai; your weekend is planned by our team in Ahmedabad and booked on WhatsApp or phone.

  • Tell us your pick-up point – Andheri, Borivali, Powai, Thane or Navi Mumbai – so we choose the right exit, the ferry or the train.
  • Named properties, not "similar": you see the villa or resort name and the car type before you pay.
  • Monsoon backup: if a ghat road or a ferry is shut by weather, we rework the plan with you, not after you reach.
  • Food confirmed in writing: Jain and pure-veg meals are easy in Lonavala, Nashik, Shirdi and Mahabaleshwar; Konkan homestays cook good vegetarian food but Jain menus are basic, which we tell you upfront.
  • Private only: your own car and timings; friend groups and joint families travel as a private group on their own dates. IATA-accredited; member of TAAI, TAFI, ADTOI and IATO; recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; office open Monday to Saturday with 24×7 support while you travel.

More: Maharashtra packages, Gujarat packages for Saputara and beyond, all tour packages from Mumbai and the Kashmir guide for Mumbai travellers when you have a full week.

Weekend Getaways from Mumbai: FAQs

Which is the best weekend getaway from Mumbai?

Lonavala is the most convenient, under two hours by car or train, with villas, caves and short hikes. For a quieter break choose Matheran, where cars are not allowed. Alibaug is the best beach weekend thanks to the Ro-Ro ferry. With a Friday off, Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are the classic family pick from October to May.

Which are the best monsoon getaways near Mumbai?

Lonavala, Igatpuri, Malshej Ghat, Bhandardara and Karjat are at their best from July to September, with waterfalls and low cloud. Expect weekend crowds and occasional closures of viewpoints and dams after heavy rain. Avoid Mahabaleshwar, Janjira fort boats and the beaches in peak monsoon, and check IMD warnings before driving the ghats.

How do I reach Alibaug from Mumbai fastest?

The Ro-Ro ferry from Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) to Mandwa carries your car and takes about an hour; Alibaug town is another 30 minutes by road. Catamarans from the Gateway of India are similar for foot passengers but usually stop in the monsoon. By road via the Atal Setu, allow about 2½ to 3 hours.

Is Matheran open to cars?

No. Private vehicles stop at the Dasturi car park, about 2½ km below the town. From there you walk, hire a horse or hand-pulled rickshaw, or use the e-rickshaw service. You can also reach Matheran by the toy train from Neral, though the full run is usually suspended during the monsoon and a shorter shuttle continues.

Which hill station near Mumbai is best for a weekend?

Lonavala and Khandala are nearest at about 85 km. Matheran is the most peaceful because it is car-free. Igatpuri is cooler and less crowded. Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are the full hill-station experience but need five to six hours each way, so they suit a three-day weekend better than a two-day one.

Which beach is best for a weekend from Mumbai?

Alibaug and Kashid are the nearest good beaches, reached by ferry plus a short drive. Dapoli and Harnai give quieter sand and dolphin trips but need about five hours. Daman is good for food and a relaxed seafront. Ganpatipule pairs a beach with the Ganpati temple. Avoid swimming from June to September.

Can I do a Goa trip as a weekend from Mumbai?

Yes, by air. Non-stop flights to Mopa and Dabolim take about 1¼ hours, so leaving Friday evening and returning Sunday night gives two full days. The Vande Bharat to Madgaon takes about eight hours, and the drive ten hours or more. A Friday or Monday off makes it far more relaxing.

What does a weekend trip from Mumbai cost for two?

Indicatively, a mid-range stay for two nights costs ₹7,000 to ₹16,000 for a couple, and a private car with driver ₹5,000 to ₹13,500 depending on distance. Villas and resorts in Lonavala, Alibaug or Karjat cost far more on monsoon and long weekends. Ferry, rafting, entry and tasting fees are extra.

Is the Mumbai–Pune Expressway Missing Link open?

Yes. The Missing Link, with its long tunnels and a high viaduct bypassing the Khandala ghat, opened on 1 May 2026. It reduces the Mumbai–Pune drive by around half an hour and avoids the slowest ghat stretch, which makes Lonavala and Khandala weekends noticeably easier, especially in the monsoon.

Which weekend getaways from Mumbai are good for senior citizens?

Shirdi by Vande Bharat, Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, Mahabaleshwar with a hotel near Mall Road, and Alibaug by Ro-Ro all keep walking and road time manageable. Matheran involves a lot of walking on uneven paths, and the Kolad and Malshej trips suit younger travellers. Ask for ground-floor rooms or hotels with lifts.

Do you have a Mumbai office for weekend bookings?

No. Vibrant Holidays works from one office on C G Road, Ahmedabad. Mumbai weekends are planned by our team there and booked on WhatsApp or phone, with the itinerary, vouchers and GST invoice sent as PDFs. A private car and driver collect you from home, and we remain reachable 24×7 during the trip.
