Kerala is one of the easiest big holidays to arrange from Hyderabad. Flights from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport reach Kochi in well under two hours, several times a day, so even a Saturday departure gives you a full afternoon in Munnar or on the backwaters. For families who prefer the railway, the Sabari Express leaves Secunderabad every afternoon and pulls into Ernakulam Town by the following noon. And because Kerala sits next to Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad travellers can join it with Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India or with the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai on the same trip.

This page answers the questions we hear most from Telangana travellers: what a Kerala trip should cost per person, which flights and trains to use, how to fit Kerala around Sankranti, Dasara and the summer vacation, how spicy (or not) the food is, and how to build in Kanyakumari or Madurai without wasting a day. The packages listed carry today's prices. Every trip is planned by our Ahmedabad team over WhatsApp or phone and runs privately – your own car and driver, on dates you choose.

Getting there, priced separately: Hyderabad–Kochi return fares are commonly ₹7,000 to ₹13,000 per person with three to five weeks' notice. Flying into Madurai or out of Thiruvananthapuram adds a little. In Sankranti week, the summer vacation and the Christmas period, expect ₹15,000 to ₹21,000. On the Sabari Express, a 3AC berth to Ernakulam Town is roughly ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 one way, and 2AC about ₹2,200 to ₹3,000.

Paid locally if not included: Eravikulam park entry and bus, the Periyar boat, Kathakali tickets, the Vivekananda Rock ferry at Kanyakumari, special darshan tickets in Madurai, lunches outside the plan and tips. We show each as a line with an estimate. When two quotes differ by thousands, compare three things first: the Munnar hotel, the houseboat category and the vehicle.

Hyderabad to Kerala: flights, the Sabari Express and why not to drive

Flights from RGIA (Shamshabad)

  • Hyderabad–Kochi (COK): IndiGo runs several non-stop flights a day, at about 1 hour 40 to 45 minutes, and SpiceJet has announced services on the route from late November 2026. Morning departures land in time for the drive to Munnar.
  • Hyderabad–Thiruvananthapuram (TRV): non-stop on limited days; otherwise one stop via Bengaluru or Chennai. We use TRV as the exit point for Kovalam and Kanyakumari trips.
  • Hyderabad–Madurai (IXM): handy for the Madurai-first route. Non-stop flights have operated on this sector; when they do not suit your dates we connect via Chennai or Bengaluru.
  • Reaching the airport: RGIA is about 45 minutes from Gachibowli and Banjara Hills and up to 75 minutes from Secunderabad or Kompally at peak hours. Allow for it on a morning flight.

Trains from Secunderabad

  • Sabari Express (17230): the dependable daily train. It leaves Secunderabad around 12.20 pm, passes through Nalgonda, Guntur and Katpadi, and reaches Ernakulam Town at about noon the next day, Kottayam around 1 pm and Thiruvananthapuram Central by early evening.
  • Which station to get down at: Ernakulam Town for Kochi and Munnar; Kottayam for Kumarakom and the road up to Thekkady; Thiruvananthapuram for Kovalam, Varkala and Kanyakumari. Choosing well saves two to three hours of driving.
  • Weekly and special trains: a few other weekly and seasonal services run between the Hyderabad area and Kerala, especially during the Sabarimala season. Their days change, so we check them for your dates.
  • Booking: from mid-November to mid-January Ayyappa devotees fill Kerala-bound trains from Telangana, so book the moment the reservation window opens.

By road

Hyderabad to Kochi is roughly 1,100–1,150 km, a two-day drive each way through Kurnool, Bengaluru and Coimbatore. It is possible, but on a week-long holiday it costs four days, so we recommend flying or the train and using a local car in Kerala.

Three Kerala itineraries for travellers from Hyderabad

6 nights – Kerala and Kanyakumari

  • Day 3: Drive to Alleppey; private houseboat from noon through the Kuttanad paddy canals; overnight on board.
  • Day 4: Drive to Kovalam (about 4 hours); evening at Lighthouse Beach.
  • Day 5: Day trip to Kanyakumari (about 2 hours each way): Vivekananda Rock Memorial by ferry, the Thiruvalluvar statue, Kumari Amman Temple and sunset at the confluence of three seas. Padmanabhapuram Palace on the way.
  • Day 6: Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram; afternoon free in Kovalam.
  • Day 7: Fly Thiruvananthapuram–Hyderabad (often one-stop).

7 nights – Madurai temples to the Kerala backwaters

  • Day 1: Fly Hyderabad–Madurai; evening darshan at the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
  • Day 2: Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal in the morning; drive to Thekkady (about 4 hours) through the Western Ghats.
  • Day 3: Periyar lake boat ride, spice garden and an evening Kathakali show.
  • Days 4–5: Drive to Munnar; two nights for the national park, Top Station and Kundala Lake.
  • Day 6: Drive to Kumarakom; backwater resort and an evening country-boat ride through the village canals.
  • Day 7: Short houseboat cruise, then Kochi for Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
  • Day 8: Fly Kochi–Hyderabad non-stop.

4 nights – by Sabari Express, for budget-minded families

  • Day 1: Board at Secunderabad after lunch; overnight on the train.
  • Day 2: Get down at Kottayam around 1 pm; 45-minute drive to Kumarakom; evening by the lake.
  • Day 3: Alleppey houseboat night with Kerala meals prepared on board.
  • Day 4: Drive to Kochi; Chinese fishing nets, Jew Town, Marine Drive.
  • Day 5: Morning shopping on MG Road; afternoon flight to Hyderabad, or the train back if time allows.

The car and driver are yours alone for the whole trip. Joint families and friends from the same colony often travel together as a private group in a Tempo Traveller, with rooms on the same floor where hotels allow.

Telangana holidays and the best Kerala windows

  • Sankranti (mid-January): Telangana schools close for several days around Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma. Kerala is dry and cool then – one of the best weeks of the year – but it is also peak season, so book before November.
  • Summer vacation (late April to early June): the long break for Hyderabad families. The Kerala coast is hot and humid, so give more nights to Munnar and Thekkady and add Kodaikanal from Madurai if you want a second hill station. The monsoon reaches Kerala around 1 June, so finish by the end of May.
  • Dasara holidays (October): in 2026 Telangana schools had a 13-day Dasara break from 10 to 22 October. Next year's dates will be announced by the state, but the break usually falls in late September or October, when Kerala is green with short afternoon showers and good hotel rates.
  • Sabarimala season (mid-November to mid-January): lakhs of Ayyappa devotees from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh travel to Kerala. Roads around Kottayam, Erumeli and Pathanamthitta are busy, and trains are full. Leisure travellers should route via Kochi and Munnar and keep plans away from the Sabarimala approach on peak days.
  • Christmas and New Year: ideal weather and the highest rates. Fort Kochi's New Year carnival draws crowds.
  • Monsoon (June–August): Kerala's cheapest season, popular for Ayurveda and quiet couples' trips.

Food for Telugu travellers, and other practical tips

Will the food suit a Hyderabadi palate?

Rice is the base of every Kerala meal, which Telugu families appreciate, but the flavours are milder and built on coconut, curry leaves and tamarind rather than red chilli. Sambar, rasam, thoran, avial and payasam on a banana leaf will feel close to home; the heat level will not. Ask restaurants for "extra spicy" and carry your own avakaya, gongura pickle and podis – most families do, and hotels are happy to serve them alongside the meal.

Non-vegetarians should try Malabar biryani in Kochi or Kozhikode. It uses short-grain kaima rice and is gentler than Hyderabadi dum biryani, so treat it as a different dish rather than a rival. Karimeen fry and Kerala beef dishes are common on menus; if anyone in your family avoids beef, mention it at restaurants. Pure vegetarians are well looked after: Kochi, Munnar and Thiruvananthapuram have Andhra-style and North Indian veg restaurants as well as Kerala meals. In Madurai and Kanyakumari, Tamil vegetarian meals are everywhere. We note veg, Jain or no-onion-garlic requirements on each hotel and houseboat voucher.

Hotel styles

  • Economy: clean 3-star hotels in Munnar town, Kumily and Kochi; good for value-focused families.
  • Mid-range: resorts with valley or lake views and pools – the category most Hyderabad families choose.
  • Top-end: plantation resorts, heritage hotels in Fort Kochi and cliff-top or beachfront properties in Kovalam.

Practical tips

  • Carry a jacket for Munnar from November to February; Hyderabad's winter clothing is enough.
  • Kerala temples, including Padmanabhaswamy, enforce traditional dress; Madurai's Meenakshi temple asks for modest clothing and does not allow phones inside.
  • Kanyakumari's Vivekananda Rock ferry has long queues in holiday weeks – go early in the morning.
  • UPI is accepted widely; keep cash for boatmen, jeep drivers and temple offerings.
  • On the Sabari Express, carry dinner from home; the train is a full day and night.

Kerala tour from Hyderabad: FAQs

How much does a Kerala tour package from Hyderabad cost?

Our Kerala packages currently start at ₹15,500 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Kerala packages fall between ₹23,500 and ₹40,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Hyderabad to Kochi?

Yes. IndiGo operates several non-stop flights a day from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to Kochi, with a flying time of about 1 hour 40 to 45 minutes, and SpiceJet has announced flights on the route from late November 2026. Thiruvananthapuram has non-stop flights only on some days; otherwise you connect via Bengaluru or Chennai.

Which train goes from Hyderabad to Kerala?

The Sabari Express runs daily from Secunderabad at about 12.20 pm and reaches Ernakulam Town around noon the next day, Kottayam around 1 pm and Thiruvananthapuram by early evening. A few weekly and seasonal trains also run, mostly in the Sabarimala season. Book early between November and January, when Ayyappa devotees fill the trains.

Can I combine Kerala and Kanyakumari from Hyderabad?

Yes. Fly into Kochi, cover Munnar and the backwaters, then base yourself in Kovalam and visit Kanyakumari as a day trip, about two hours each way. Fly back to Hyderabad from Thiruvananthapuram. Six nights is the comfortable length for this combination.

How do I add Madurai to a Kerala tour?

Start in Madurai rather than finishing there. Fly from Hyderabad to Madurai, see the Meenakshi Amman Temple, then drive about four hours to Thekkady and continue to Munnar, the backwaters and Kochi. Flying home non-stop from Kochi avoids a long drive back. Seven nights covers it without rushing.

Is Kerala a good trip for the Telangana summer vacation?

Yes, if the plan favours the hills. Munnar stays around 15 to 25 degrees in April and May while the coast is humid, so spend two nights there, add Thekkady, and keep the houseboat to one night. The monsoon reaches Kerala around the start of June, so travel by late May.

Can we visit Kerala during the Dasara holidays?

Yes. Telangana's Dasara break usually falls in late September or October, when Kerala is green after the monsoon with short afternoon showers. Hotel rates are moderate and waterfalls are full. In 2026 the school holidays ran from 10 to 22 October; dates for next year will be announced by the state.

Will Hyderabadi families find the Kerala food too mild?

Many do. Kerala cooking uses coconut and curry leaves and is less chilli-hot than Telangana food. Ask for extra spice and carry your own pickles and podis. Rice-based meals, sambar and rasam are familiar, and Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have Andhra-style and North Indian vegetarian restaurants.

How much is the flight from Hyderabad to Kochi?

A return non-stop ticket usually costs ₹7,000 to ₹13,000 per person when booked three to five weeks ahead. Around Sankranti, the summer vacation and Christmas, fares commonly reach ₹15,000 to ₹21,000. We book flights with the package so arrival times and pick-ups match.

Does the Sabarimala season affect a Kerala holiday?

It can. From mid-November to mid-January, roads near Kottayam, Erumeli and Pathanamthitta and Kerala-bound trains from Telangana are crowded. Leisure trips are not affected much if you route through Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey, but book trains and Thekkady hotels earlier than usual.

How many days are enough for Kerala from Hyderabad?

Five nights covers Munnar, Thekkady, a houseboat and Kochi comfortably, because the Hyderabad–Kochi flight is short. Four nights works if you drop Thekkady. Add one or two nights for Kanyakumari or Madurai, and an extra day each way if you take the Sabari Express.

Can a large family from Hyderabad travel together?

Yes. Every trip is private and customised, so joint families and friends travel as a private group on their own dates, usually in a Tempo Traveller or two cars. We pick hotels with connecting or same-floor rooms and a two- or three-bedroom houseboat.
