From KolkataAbout 3 h non-stop to Kochi on most days; 4–7 h via one stop; about 38 h by train from Shalimar
Good forPuja holidays, seniors, honeymoon, Ayurveda

Kerala sits at the opposite corner of India from Kolkata, roughly 2,000 km away, and that distance shapes every good plan. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) has only a thin band of non-stop flights to Kochi, so most travellers either take the one daytime non-stop or connect through Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad. The train is a real option too – the Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express and a few other weekly trains reach Ernakulam in about a day and a half – but it eats into leave. Because getting there costs a day each way, we rarely suggest fewer than six nights for travellers from Kolkata.

What Kerala gives back is worth the journey. Bengali families who know Darjeeling find Munnar gentler and greener, with tea estates and warm afternoons instead of fog and woollens. The backwaters feel like a calmer, cleaner cousin of the Sundarbans creeks. And the food is closer to home than in any other state we send people to: rice at every meal, fish in coconut gravy and prawns cooked the way chingri malaikari is cooked in Kolkata kitchens. Below: prices, how each CCU flight and train shapes day one, three day-wise plans, the Puja-to-Christmas calendar and food tips. Your trip is planned by our team in Ahmedabad and booked on WhatsApp or phone – we have no Kolkata office.

Kerala tour cost from Kolkata: 2026 price bands

Kerala packages on our site start at ₹15,500 per person at the moment, with 24 live. The bands below are indicative and quoted per person on twin sharing. They leave out the flight or train from Kolkata and include hotels with breakfast, one private houseboat night with all meals, a private AC car and driver from arrival to departure, and the sightseeing named in the itinerary. Prices vary by season and by the hotels you choose, so treat these as a yardstick, not a fixed rate.

Length and routeStandard (3-star)Deluxe (4-star / resort)Premium (5-star, premium houseboat)
5 nights – Kochi, Munnar 2, houseboat, Kochi₹19,000 – 24,500₹26,000 – 34,000₹43,000 – 64,000
6 nights – adds Thekkady₹22,500 – 29,000₹31,000 – 40,500₹51,000 – 76,000
7 nights – Kochi in, Thiruvananthapuram out, Varkala beach₹26,500 – 34,000₹36,000 – 47,500₹60,000 – 92,000
8 nights – adds Kumarakom and Kanyakumari₹30,500 – 39,500₹41,500 – 54,500₹70,000 – 1,06,000

Getting there from Kolkata: a return CCU–Kochi economy ticket usually costs about ₹11,000 to ₹20,000 per person when booked six to eight weeks ahead, whether non-stop or one-stop. In Puja week and between 20 December and 2 January it often climbs to ₹22,000–32,000. Third AC on the Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express costs a fraction of that, but adds about three days of travel for the round trip, so many families take the train one way and fly back.

Not included unless you ask: park and boat tickets, cultural shows, jeep rides, Ayurveda treatments, meals away from the houseboat and tips – each listed on your quote with an estimate. The biggest price swing is the houseboat: a private deluxe boat with full-time AC costs several thousand rupees a night more than a standard one, so check that line when comparing quotes.

Kolkata to Kerala: the CCU flights and the long trains from Shalimar and Howrah

Schedules below reflect what airlines and Indian Railways listed as of November 2026. Both change by season; we confirm the actual flight or train at the time of quoting.

OptionTime door to doorWhat it means for your trip
Non-stop CCU–Kochi (COK), Air India Express and IndiGo have operated it; usually a late-morning or midday departureAbout 3 hours flyingLands mid-afternoon. Too late to start the 4-hour hill drive to Munnar safely, so night one is in Kochi.
One-stop CCU–Kochi via Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Mumbai4–7 hours with a short connectionAn early departure (5–8.30 am) can land by lunchtime, which makes a same-day drive to Munnar or Alleppey possible.
One-stop CCU–Thiruvananthapuram (TRV)5–8 hoursUsed for the return leg on a south-to-north loop, so you never drive back up the state.
Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express (22642), a couple of days a weekAbout 38–39 hours to ErnakulamLeaves Shalimar late at night, reaches Ernakulam on the second afternoon. 2A, 3A and sleeper classes.
Gurudev Express from Shalimar, and the Vivek Express calling near HowrahAbout 37–39 hoursWeekly or few-times-a-week services through Kerala towards Kanyakumari; good for a south-first itinerary.
  • Shalimar is not Howrah. Shalimar station is in Howrah district, south of the main terminus, and the approach roads jam in the evening. From Salt Lake or New Town allow 75–90 minutes. The Howrah–Ernakulam Antyodaya Express is unreserved, so we do not suggest it for families.
  • Which flight to choose: if you are going to the hills first, an early one-stop that lands before 1 pm saves a hotel night. If you prefer to rest, the midday non-stop with a Kochi evening is more relaxed and avoids a missed connection.
  • Evenings last longer: Kochi lies far to the west of Kolkata on the same clock, so sunset in December comes about an hour later than at home – roughly 6 pm instead of 5 pm. That extra light makes a Fort Kochi walk after landing worthwhile.

Three Kerala itineraries built around Kolkata arrival times

6 nights / 7 days – Puja holiday for a family, on the midday non-stop

  • Day 1: Non-stop CCU–Kochi, landing mid-afternoon. Check in at Fort Kochi; Chinese fishing nets at sunset, then a short Kathakali performance with the make-up session beforehand.
  • Day 2: Drive to Munnar (about 4 hours) with stops at Cheeyappara and Valara falls. Evening in a tea-estate resort.
  • Day 3: Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the tea museum.
  • Day 4: Drive to Thekkady; spice plantation walk and an evening Kalaripayattu show.
  • Day 5: Morning boat on Periyar lake, then drive to Kumarakom for a lake-side resort.
  • Day 6: Board a private houseboat at Alleppey by noon; lunch, tea and dinner on board, with fish curry or pure-veg as you choose.
  • Day 7: Disembark after breakfast, drive 1½ hours to Kochi airport for the flight home.

7 nights / 8 days – Christmas week, Kochi in and Thiruvananthapuram out

  • Day 1: Early one-stop flight landing in Kochi before lunch; drive straight to Munnar.
  • Day 2: Munnar – Top Station viewpoint and Kundala Lake.
  • Day 3: Drive to Thekkady; spice garden and a bamboo-rafting or nature walk with the Forest Department.
  • Day 4: Alleppey houseboat night.
  • Day 5: Drive to Varkala (about 3½ hours); cliff-top hotel and the beach at sunset.
  • Day 6: Varkala at leisure, or the Jatayu Earth's Centre cable car and sculpture.
  • Day 7: Day trip to Kanyakumari (about 2½ hours each way from Thiruvananthapuram) for the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, which Bengali travellers often ask for; overnight near the airport.
  • Day 8: One-stop flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Kolkata.

8 nights – train out, flight back, at a senior-friendly pace

  • Getting there: Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express in 2A or 3A, two nights on board, arriving at Ernakulam in the afternoon; car and driver wait at the station.
  • Days 1–3: a rest night in Kochi, then two nights in Munnar with one outing a day and lift or ground-floor rooms.
  • Day 4: Thekkady and the Periyar boat, reached by a short walk from the car.
  • Days 5–7: two nights at an Ayurveda resort in Marari or Kumarakom with a doctor's consultation, plus a backwater day cruise instead of a night on board.
  • Days 8–9: Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Jew Town, a last night near the airport, and the flight to Kolkata.

Every plan is private – your own car, driver and dates. Extended families travel as a private group on their own dates, usually in a Tempo Traveller.

From Durga Puja to Christmas: timing Kerala around the Bengali calendar

Kolkata has a long holiday season that runs from Mahalaya to the New Year, and Kerala's dry season starts in the middle of it. That overlap is why October to early January is the busiest time we plan Kerala for Kolkata travellers.

  • Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja: government offices close for the Puja days, and West Bengal state schools take a long Puja vacation that runs on into November. Kerala in October is green from the monsoon, with afternoon showers from the north-east monsoon but rarely full-day rain. Many families leave on Dashami or Ekadashi to avoid missing the pandal days; fares from CCU spike that week, so book by July.
  • Kali Puja and Bhai Phonta: a second short window. Early November is quieter in Kerala than Diwali week in North India, so hotels are easier to get.
  • Christmas and New Year: Kerala has a large Christian population, so Fort Kochi, Kumarakom and the beaches are lit up and busy. If you want Park Street-style Christmas lights but warm weather, this is the week; expect peak hotel rates from 20 December to 2 January.
  • Poila Baisakh and Vishu: the Bengali New Year and Kerala's Vishu fall in the same mid-April days. Temples are decorated with the Vishukkani display, and Munnar is pleasant while the coast is hot.
  • Summer vacation: West Bengal schools usually break in May. Plan Munnar and Thekkady early in the month; the south-west monsoon normally reaches Kerala around the start of June, after which houseboats run but beach days are rare.

Sabarimala's pilgrim season runs roughly from mid-November to mid-January. It does not affect most tourist routes, but roads near Pathanamthitta and some Kochi–Thekkady stretches get heavy traffic on peak days; we time drives to avoid them.

Fish, rice and niramish: food tips for Bengali travellers in Kerala

For fish and meat eaters

  • Karimeen (pearl spot): the backwater fish, usually wrapped in banana leaf and roasted with spices as karimeen pollichathu. It is bony, like ilish, so most Bengali guests are comfortable with it.
  • Fish molee and prawn curries: cooked in coconut milk with green chilli and curry leaves – close in spirit to chingri malaikari, though milder and without mustard.
  • Houseboat meals: the cook buys fish from the canal-side farms and can make a lightly spiced fish fry and a gravy. Ask in advance if you want less coconut or fish with gravy rather than dry fry; we write it on the voucher.
  • Appam with stew and Kerala parotta with chicken or mutton roast: the breakfast and dinner staples families tend to enjoy most.

For vegetarian and niramish meals

  • A traditional sadya on a banana leaf is entirely vegetarian, and every town has veg "meals" restaurants with rice, sambar, rasam and two or three vegetables.
  • Elders who keep niramish on certain days, or travel during Puja, can ask hotels and the houseboat for no onion, garlic or egg. Options are widest in Kochi and Munnar; in Thekkady and on the beaches the menu is simpler.
  • Kerala cooks in coconut oil. If anyone in the family finds it heavy, ask for sunflower oil; most hotels will oblige. Bring a bottle of kasundi or aamer achar if a meal does not feel complete without it.
  • Payasam and banana halwa are the local sweets; nothing replaces nolen gurer sandesh, so carry a box for the train.

Practical points from Kolkata

  • Munnar in winter is cool, not cold – a light jacket or shawl is enough, far less than you would pack for Darjeeling.
  • Temples such as Padmanabhaswamy and Guruvayur enforce dress codes: dhoti for men, saree or salwar for women.
  • On the train, book lower berths for seniors under the senior-citizen quota and pack food for the first day; pantry options improve south of Visakhapatnam.

Kerala tour from Kolkata: FAQs

How much does a Kerala tour package from Kolkata cost?

Our Kerala packages currently start at ₹15,500 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Kerala packages fall between ₹23,500 and ₹40,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Kolkata are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Kolkata to Kerala?

Yes, but only a few. As of November 2026 a non-stop flight from Kolkata to Kochi usually operates on most days, taking about three hours and leaving around late morning or midday. Most other options connect through Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Mumbai in four to seven hours. Thiruvananthapuram is reached with one stop. We confirm the operating days when we quote.

Which airport in Kerala should I fly into from Kolkata?

Kochi is the right arrival airport for almost every first trip, because Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey are all within four hours by road. For seven nights or more, we book you into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram, so the route runs one way down the state and you do not repeat the long drive back north.

Which train goes from Kolkata to Kerala?

The Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express runs a couple of days a week from Shalimar station and reaches Ernakulam in about 38 to 39 hours. The Gurudev Express from Shalimar and the Vivek Express, which calls near Howrah, also cross Kerala. Seats in 2A and 3A sell out early for Puja and Christmas, so book as soon as reservations open.

How many days are enough for Kerala from Kolkata?

Six nights is the sensible minimum from Kolkata, because the journey takes most of a day each way even by air. Six nights covers Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and a houseboat. Seven or eight nights adds a beach such as Varkala or Kovalam, Kanyakumari or an Ayurveda stay, and suits families taking the train one way.

Is Kerala a good choice during the Durga Puja holidays?

Yes. Kerala is at its greenest in October, the heavy south-west monsoon is over and hotels have not yet reached winter prices. Expect short afternoon showers. Flights from Kolkata are expensive in Puja week, so book by July, or leave a day or two after Dashami when fares begin to ease.

Will a Bengali family get fish and rice in Kerala?

Easily. Rice comes with almost every meal, and fish is central to the cuisine – karimeen from the backwaters, fish molee in coconut milk, prawn and crab curries. The gravies use coconut rather than mustard, so they taste milder than at home. Houseboat cooks will prepare fish to your request if told in advance.

Can vegetarian or niramish meals be arranged on a Kerala tour?

Yes. Vegetarian food is available everywhere, and the traditional sadya is fully vegetarian. For elders who eat niramish, without onion, garlic or egg, we inform each hotel and the houseboat in writing. Kochi and Munnar have the most choice; menus in Thekkady and at beach resorts are simpler but still workable.

What is the return airfare from Kolkata to Kochi?

Usually about ₹11,000 to ₹20,000 per person in economy when booked six to eight weeks ahead. During Puja week and from 20 December to early January it often reaches ₹22,000 to ₹32,000. One-stop fares are sometimes cheaper than the non-stop, but check the connection time and baggage rules before choosing.

Is Munnar cold like Darjeeling?

No. Munnar is at about 1,600 metres, lower than Darjeeling, and lies much closer to the equator. December and January nights drop to roughly 10 to 14°C and days are mild and sunny. A light jacket or shawl is enough. Travellers who find Darjeeling too cold in winter are usually comfortable in Munnar.

Can senior citizens from Kolkata travel to Kerala comfortably?

Yes, with the right pace. We limit drives to one a day, choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms and suggest a backwater day cruise instead of a night on board for anyone uneasy on water. Ask the airline for wheelchair help at CCU and Kochi, and book lower berths on the train under the senior-citizen quota.

How do I book a Kerala trip if Vibrant Holidays has no Kolkata office?

You plan with our team in Ahmedabad on WhatsApp or phone. We send a written itinerary with hotel names and prices, revise it until it suits you, then share invoices and vouchers as PDFs and take payment online. During the trip a 24×7 WhatsApp line handles changes, from a delayed flight to a different houseboat menu.
