Odisha Puri Tour Packages from Ahmedabad
Jagannath darshan in Puri, the Sun Temple at Konark, dolphins on Chilika and the temple town of Bhubaneswar – reached by the early IndiGo flight from SVPI or the Puri Express from Kalupur, with sattvic food that Gujarati families find easy.
For many Gujarati families, Puri completes a set. Dwarka is close to home, Rameswaram and Badrinath are on the list, and Jagannath Puri is the Dham in the east that people keep postponing because it feels far. It is less far than it looks. One non-stop flight leaves SVPI every morning for Bhubaneswar, and by lunch you can be in Puri, about 60 km down the road. Odisha tour packages from Ahmedabad usually combine three places that sit in a neat triangle – Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar – with Chilika lake as an optional fourth.
This page is written for travellers from Ahmedabad and the rest of Gujarat. It covers the flight and the Puri Express train, the temple rules that surprise first-time visitors (no phones, a dress code, and entry only for Hindus), how Mahaprasad works at Ananda Bazar, what the Kartik month and Rath Yatra crowds really feel like, indicative package prices excluding flights, three itineraries that suit different ages, and a month-by-month guide that includes the Gujarat Diwali vacation and the honest truth about Odisha in May.

Flights from Ahmedabad: return fares to Bhubaneswar on the non-stop usually come to about ₹9,000–16,000 per person when booked six to eight weeks ahead, and rise in the Diwali vacation and around Rath Yatra. One-stop routings via Delhi, Mumbai or Hyderabad are an option when the non-stop is full. The Puri Express in AC classes costs far less but takes about a day and a half each way.
Typically extra: temple dakshina and Mahaprasad, a local panda if you want one, Chilika boat tickets, monument entry fees at Konark and Udayagiri, camera fees, lunches and dinners, and tips. Rath Yatra week and the Panchuka days in November carry hotel surcharges in Puri; we show them on the quote.
Getting to Puri from Ahmedabad: flight or train
As of November 2026; schedules change and we confirm them for your dates.
| Option | Details | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-stop flight SVPI – Bhubaneswar (BBI) | IndiGo, about once a day, early morning departure | About 2 hours in the air, then 1½ hours by road to Puri | Most families; seniors who want a short travel day |
| One-stop flights | Via Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru on IndiGo or Air India | About 5 – 8 hours | When the non-stop is sold out or the timing does not suit |
| 12844 Ahmedabad – Puri Superfast Express | From Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur), evening departure, via Vadodara, Surat, Nagpur and Raipur; about four days a week | About 38 hours, arriving on the morning of the third day | Travellers who prefer trains or have time; the return is 12843 |
- The early flight is an advantage. Landing in Bhubaneswar before 9 am means you can see Lingaraj and the Old Town temples on the way, or drive straight to Puri for an afternoon darshan.
- Bhubaneswar to Puri: about 60 km on a four-lane road, roughly 1½ hours. Konark is about 35 km from Puri along the Marine Drive, and Satapada on Chilika about 50 km.
- The train trade-off: the Puri Express saves money but uses four days of a week-long trip in transit. Some families take the train one way and fly back. Book AC berths as soon as the reservation window opens, especially for November and the Rath Yatra period.
- Puri station is in the town itself, about 2 km from the temple, so train arrivals need only a short transfer.
Jagannath temple rules every visitor should know
As of November 2026; the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration updates rules and we check before you travel.
- Entry is for Hindus only. This includes Hindus of Indian origin from abroad; Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists are generally admitted. Non-Hindus, including foreign spouses, cannot enter, and many families are caught out by this. They can see the temple and the Neela Chakra from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite the Lion Gate, which has been a viewing point for decades.
- No phones, cameras or smartwatches. Mobile phones are not allowed anywhere inside the complex. Leave them in the car with your driver or at the deposit counters near the gate. Plan where the family will meet afterwards before you go in.
- No leather. Belts, wallets and bags made of leather must stay outside. Footwear is left at the shoe stands.
- Dress code: since 1 January 2024 shorts, half pants, ripped jeans, skirts and sleeveless tops are not allowed. Men usually wear trousers or a dhoti, women a saree, salwar kameez or similar.
- Gates: all four gates – Lion (east), Horse (south), Tiger (west) and Elephant (north) – reopened to devotees in June 2024. On crowded days the administration may allow entry only through the Lion Gate, as it did during Panchuka in November 2025.
- Bahara Katha darshan: on busy days devotees see the deities from the outer barricade in the Natamandap instead of going near the Ratna Simhasana. The Ratna Bhandar inventory that began in March 2026 did not interrupt daily rituals.
- Pandas: you do not need one, but many families like a known panda for a sankalp or puja. We can arrange one at a fixed fee so there is no bargaining at the gate.
Mahaprasad and food for Gujarati and Jain travellers
Puri is one of the easiest places in India for vegetarian travellers, because the temple kitchen itself is vegetarian and the town eats around it.
- Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar: the temple kitchen cooks rice, dal, vegetable curries, khiri and sweets in earthen pots on wood fires, without onion, garlic, tomato or potato. It is sold in clay pots at Ananda Bazar inside the temple complex. Ask your panda which items are ready; by mid-afternoon the choice is smaller.
- Is Mahaprasad suitable for Jains? It has no onion or garlic, but the vegetable list can include some roots and is cooked in the traditional way, so strict Jains usually treat it as darshan prasad and eat elsewhere. We arrange Jain meals at the hotel, confirmed in writing.
- Gujarati thali: Puri has several Gujarati and Marwari bhojanalayas near the temple and on Grand Road, and some dharmshalas run by Gujarati trusts. Bhubaneswar has pure-veg restaurants in Saheed Nagar and near the Lingaraj temple.
- Odia vegetarian dishes worth trying: dalma (dal cooked with vegetables), pakhala (fermented rice, best in hot months), chhena poda from the sweet shops on the Puri road, and rasagola from Pahala village between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
- Fish in Odisha: coastal Odisha eats a lot of fish, so at Konark and on Chilika keep to vegetarian dhabas or carry a packed lunch, which we organise from the hotel.
Three Odisha itineraries from Ahmedabad
4 nights – Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar (first visit)
- Day 1: Early IndiGo flight from SVPI to Bhubaneswar. Drive to Puri via Pipili, the appliqué-work village. Check in, rest, and evening darshan at the Jagannath temple; walk back along Grand Road (Bada Danda), the route of the Rath Yatra.
- Day 2: Morning darshan and Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar. Afternoon at Raghurajpur, 14 km away, where every house is a pattachitra painter's studio; evening on Swargadwar beach.
- Day 3: Drive the Marine Drive to Konark. The Sun Temple in the morning light, Chandrabhaga beach, and a stop at Ramachandi temple where the Kushabhadra river meets the sea. Return to Puri.
- Day 4: Check out and drive to Bhubaneswar. Lingaraj temple (Hindus only inside; others see it from a viewing platform), Mukteswar and Rajarani temples, and Bindu Sagar. Overnight in Bhubaneswar.
- Day 5: Udayagiri and Khandagiri Jain caves and the Dhauli peace pagoda before the flight home.
5 nights – adding Chilika lake
Follow the first plan, but on day 3 leave Puri early for Satapada on Chilika, about 1½ hours away, and take a boat towards the sea mouth to look for Irrawaddy dolphins, which surface in small groups in calm morning water. Return via Konark in the afternoon. Between November and February, add a dawn visit to Mangalajodi on the northern edge of the lake, about 75 km from Bhubaneswar, where local guides pole flat boats through the wetland among large flocks of migratory ducks, waders and herons. It suits photographers and grandchildren with binoculars.
6 nights – slow pace for parents and grandparents
- Days 1–2: Fly to Bhubaneswar and go straight to a sea-facing hotel in Puri; only an evening darshan on day 1. Day 2 is a second, unhurried darshan and Mahaprasad.
- Day 3: Free morning; afternoon to Gundicha temple, Lokanath temple and Narendra Sarovar, all within a few kilometres.
- Day 4: Konark with a battery car from the parking area and a guide who keeps the walk short.
- Day 5: Drive to Bhubaneswar; Lingaraj darshan and a rest afternoon.
- Day 6: Dhauli, the State Museum or Ekamra Haat for handloom shopping – Sambalpuri and Bomkai sarees are popular gifts.
- Day 7: Fly home on the non-stop.
Beyond the temple: what each stop is really like
| Place | Time needed | Honest notes |
|---|---|---|
| Konark Sun Temple | 2 – 3 hours | A UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped as the chariot of Surya; the carved wheels are the highlight. Shade is limited, so go before 10 am. The main sanctum is filled in and closed; you see the exterior and the dance hall. |
| Chandrabhaga beach | 30 – 60 minutes | Wide and clean, but the sea is rough; not for swimming. |
| Raghurajpur | 1 – 2 hours | Painters show the process of pattachitra and palm-leaf engraving. Prices are fixed by each family; buy only what you like. |
| Chilika at Satapada | Half day | Dolphin sightings are likely but not certain. Boats are basic; carry caps and water. Calm in winter, choppy in the monsoon. |
| Lingaraj, Bhubaneswar | 1 – 1½ hours | An 11th-century Shiva temple still in daily worship; the same phone and leather rules as Puri apply. |
| Udayagiri – Khandagiri | 1½ hours | Rock-cut Jain caves from around the 2nd century BCE, with the Hathigumpha inscription of King Kharavela. Steps are steep in places; Jain families value this stop. |
| Dhauli | 45 minutes | Where Ashoka's edict stands near the Kalinga battlefield, with a white peace pagoda on the hill. |
| Pipili | 30 minutes | A roadside village of appliqué lamps, umbrellas and wall hangings; an easy stop on the airport road. |
Rath Yatra, Kartik and the crowd reality
Rath Yatra 2027: the temple administration has announced Monday 5 July 2027 for the chariot festival, with Bahuda Yatra (the return) on 13 July and Suna Besha on 14 July. Ahmedabad has its own famous Rath Yatra on the same day, so families who want Puri have to choose.
- What it is like: lakhs of devotees fill Bada Danda. Most visitors watch from a hotel balcony or a rooftop on the route that is booked months ahead; on the street you will not get close to the chariots and it is very hot and humid in July.
- Who it suits: fit adults who accept crowds. We do not recommend it for seniors or young children. A calmer option is to visit around Suna Besha, when the deities appear in gold ornaments on the chariots.
- Booking: Puri hotels for Rath Yatra week open at high rates and sell out by spring; flights to Bhubaneswar rise too.
Kartik month in November: in 2026 the Odia Kartik month runs from 27 October to Kartik Purnima on 24 November. Thousands of elderly women observing the habisha vow stay in Puri, and the last five days, Panchuka (20–24 November 2026), bring the heaviest crowds of the season, often with entry through the Lion Gate only. If your Diwali vacation dates allow, darshan is far easier in the first half of November or in December.
Konark Festival: classical dance at the open-air auditorium beside the Sun Temple, scheduled for 1–5 December 2026. In recent years the International Sand Art Festival has been held on Chandrabhaga beach in the same week.
Month-by-month: Odisha for travellers from Gujarat
| Month | Weather in Puri and Bhubaneswar | Good for | Price level |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | Warm, some rain; Bay of Bengal cyclone risk | Post-Navratri trips, Kumar Purnima | Medium |
| November | Pleasant, 18–30°C; occasional late cyclone | Gujarat Diwali vacation (about 5–25 November 2026); Kartik month; Panchuka crowds 20–24 Nov | High in vacation weeks |
| December | Cool mornings, dry | Konark Festival 1–5 Dec; Chilika and Mangalajodi birds | High around Christmas and New Year |
| January – February | Best weather, 15–28°C | Seniors, birdwatching, relaxed darshan | Medium |
| March | Warming up | Short trips; Holi (Dola Purnima) in Puri | Lower |
| April – June | Hot and very humid; Bhubaneswar often above 40°C | Only darshan-focused short visits; Snana Purnima in June | Low, except Rath Yatra |
| Late June – July | Monsoon begins; sticky heat | Rath Yatra (5 July 2027) | Very high in festival week |
| August – September | Heavy rain, rough sea | Budget darshan trips; green countryside | Low |
About the May vacation: we will plan Puri in May if that is the only window, but it is honest to say the humidity tires most Gujarati families more than Ahmedabad's dry heat. Keep sightseeing to early mornings, choose a hotel with good air-conditioning, and skip Chilika boat trips in the midday sun.
Practical tips for Ahmedabad travellers
- Swimming in Puri: the sea has strong currents. Swim only at the lifeguard-patrolled part of the main beach and only with the local nolias (lifeguards) present; seniors should stay at the water's edge.
- Hotels: Puri's sea-facing hotels are along Chakratirtha Road and near Swargadwar; for darshan on foot, a hotel near Grand Road saves time. We suggest which suits your family.
- Swargadwar: this beach area is also Puri's cremation ground; it is sacred and busy, and some families prefer to know beforehand.
- Cash and UPI: UPI works almost everywhere, but carry small notes for dakshina, shoe stands and boat counters.
- Clothing: cotton clothes for daytime, a light shawl for December mornings, and temple-appropriate clothes packed separately so you can change before darshan.

How much does a Odisha tour package from Ahmedabad cost?
Our Odisha packages currently start at ₹6,700 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Odisha packages fall between ₹17,000 and ₹29,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.
Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Bhubaneswar?
Yes. As of November 2026 IndiGo flies non-stop from Ahmedabad to Bhubaneswar about once a day, leaving SVPI early in the morning, with roughly two hours in the air. Puri is about 60 km from Bhubaneswar airport, around 1½ hours by road. Schedules change by season, so we confirm the timing when we quote.
Which train goes from Ahmedabad to Puri?
The 12844 Ahmedabad – Puri Superfast Express leaves Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) in the evening about four days a week and reaches Puri on the morning of the third day, roughly 38 hours later. The return train is 12843. Running days can change, so we check current days on IRCTC when booking.
How many days are enough for Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar?
Four nights cover Puri darshan, Konark, Raghurajpur and the main Bhubaneswar temples at a comfortable pace with the non-stop flight. Five nights let you add Chilika for dolphins. Senior citizens are happier with six nights, so that each day has only one main outing and a second darshan is possible.
Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath temple in Puri?
No. Entry is restricted to Hindus, and this is strictly enforced, including for foreign spouses of Indian family members. Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists are generally admitted. Non-Hindu members of the group can view the temple from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite the Lion Gate and visit Konark, Chilika and the Bhubaneswar sights.
Are mobile phones allowed inside the Puri temple?
No. Mobile phones, cameras and other electronic devices are banned inside the Jagannath temple complex. Leave them in your car or at the deposit counters near the gates. Leather items such as belts and wallets are also not allowed, and a dress code in force since January 2024 means shorts and sleeveless clothes are refused.
What is the Rath Yatra 2027 date in Puri?
The temple administration has announced 5 July 2027 for the Rath Yatra, with Bahuda Yatra on 13 July and Suna Besha on 14 July. Crowds run into lakhs, so most visitors book a balcony or rooftop on Bada Danda. Hotels sell out months ahead, and we do not recommend the festival day for seniors or young children.
Is Puri a good choice for the Gujarat Diwali vacation?
Yes, November weather is pleasant. In 2026 the vacation overlaps the Odia Kartik month, and the last five days, Panchuka on 20–24 November, bring very heavy crowds with entry sometimes through one gate only. If you can, travel in the first half of the vacation, when darshan is much easier.
Is Jain food available in Puri and Bhubaneswar?
Yes, with planning. Hotels prepare Jain meals without onion, garlic or root vegetables on request, which we confirm in writing. Puri has Gujarati and Marwari bhojanalayas near the temple, and Bhubaneswar has pure-veg restaurants. Mahaprasad contains no onion or garlic but strict Jains often take it only as prasad.
When can we see dolphins and birds at Chilika lake?
Irrawaddy dolphins can be seen through the year from Satapada, but calm winter mornings from November to February give the best chance. Migratory birds are at Mangalajodi and Nalabana from about November to February. During the monsoon the lake is choppy and boat trips may be cut short.
Is Odisha suitable for senior citizens from Ahmedabad?
Yes, if paced well. The early non-stop flight avoids long connections, distances between Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar are short, and food is familiar. We book hotels near the temple or with lifts, keep one outing a day, and avoid Panchuka and Rath Yatra. Winter months suit seniors far better than the humid summer.
When is the Konark Dance Festival in 2026?
The Konark Festival is scheduled for 1–5 December 2026 at the open-air auditorium beside the Sun Temple, with Odissi and other classical dance forms each evening. It is a good reason to plan an early-December trip, when the weather is cool and Chilika birds are arriving. Puri hotels are busier that week.
