Meghalaya is a high plateau of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills, wedged between Assam and Bangladesh. Its southern edge drops steeply to the plains, and that drop is why the state has so many waterfalls, gorges and caves in such a small area, and why Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Mawsynram rank among the wettest places on earth. For a traveller from Ahmedabad, the attraction is the contrast: green and cool almost all year, quiet roads, villages that keep themselves spotless and a landscape you do not see anywhere in western India.

This page is only about Meghalaya. It explains what Meghalaya tour packages from Ahmedabad cost by hotel level, the flight and train routes to Guwahati and the limited Shillong airport option, how many nights each part deserves, the root-bridge treks with an honest fitness check, Krang Suri, Laitlum, Mawsmai and Dawki, the cherry blossom season in November 2026, the guest registration rules, and where vegetarian and Jain food is easy and where it is not. If you want a wider North East trip with Tawang and Kaziranga at the centre, our North East tour packages from Ahmedabad page covers that.

Our Meghalaya and North East packages start at ₹17,999 per person, with 24 on sale today. The figures below are per person for two adults sharing a room, without the Ahmedabad–Guwahati flight. They cover hotels with breakfast, a private car and driver from Guwahati airport and back, all transfers and sightseeing in the plan.

Flights: an Ahmedabad–Guwahati return usually costs ₹11,000 – 20,000 per person when booked five to seven weeks ahead, more in Diwali vacation and Christmas week.

What raises the price: Sohra has only a few properties with real valley views, and they fill first. A private room with a view at Shnongpdeng is scarce too; many riverside stays are basic camps.

Paid on the spot: village entry and parking fees at the root bridges, Laitlum, Mawsmai, Nohkalikai, Krang Suri and Mawlynnong (usually small amounts each), the boat at Dawki or Shnongpdeng (published around ₹700 – 1,000 per boat for two or three people as of 2026), life jackets and swimming at Krang Suri, local guides for the Nongriat trek, lunches and tips.

Getting to Meghalaya from Ahmedabad

Fly to Guwahati, then drive

There is no airport in Meghalaya with a useful link to Ahmedabad, so almost every trip starts at Guwahati. As of November 2026, IndiGo operates one non-stop flight a day from SVPI Ahmedabad (AMD) to Guwahati (GAU), taking about 2 hours 45 minutes, with a morning departure listed at around 8:35 am. Schedules change by season, and we confirm before quoting. One-stop flights via Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru take five to eight hours and are the backup when the non-stop is full.

Shillong is about 100 km from Guwahati city, roughly 120 km and three hours by road from the airport, climbing past Umiam Lake. A morning arrival means you are in Shillong by mid-afternoon.

Shillong airport (Umroi)

Shillong's own airport at Umroi, about 30 km from the city, has a small number of flights on small aircraft, mostly linking Kolkata and a few other cities. From Ahmedabad it always means a change, timings are limited and flights are sometimes cancelled in poor visibility. We use it only when the fares and connections line up, usually on the return.

By train

A few weekly trains connect Gujarat with Guwahati and Kamakhya through Ahmedabad Junction. As of November 2026 these include the Gandhidham–Kamakhya Express (leaving Ahmedabad on Saturday nights, about 55–56 hours), the Hapa–Naharlagun Express (Wednesday mornings, about 51 hours to Guwahati) and the Okha–Guwahati Express (about 56 hours). It is a two-and-a-half-day journey, so we suggest it only one way, with a flight back. We pick you up at Guwahati or Kamakhya station.

Where to base yourself: Shillong, Sohra and the river

The most common Meghalaya plan is to stay in Shillong and do everything as day trips. It works, but it means three or four long return drives on hill roads. Splitting the nights is better:

  • Shillong (2–3 nights): the state capital at about 1,500 m, with the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, Ward's Lake, the Don Bosco Museum of the North East, Police Bazaar and a strong live-music and café culture. The base for Laitlum, Elephant Falls, Mawphlang's sacred forest and Krang Suri.
  • Sohra (1–2 nights): the plateau above the Bangladesh plains. Staying here means you see Nohkalikai and the valleys in the clear early morning, before cloud rolls in, and you can start the Nongriat trek fresh at 7 am instead of after a two-hour drive.
  • Shnongpdeng or Dawki (optional 1 night): the Umngot river at its clearest, with camping, kayaking and boating. Rooms here are simple; it suits couples and younger families more than seniors.

Three Meghalaya itineraries from Ahmedabad

5 nights / 6 days – first visit, families

  • Day 1: morning non-stop from Ahmedabad to Guwahati; drive to Shillong with a stop at Umiam Lake; evening at Police Bazaar.
  • Day 2: Laitlum canyons early, Elephant Falls, Ward's Lake and the Don Bosco Museum.
  • Day 3: drive to Sohra via the Mawkdok valley viewpoint; Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls (best after the monsoon), Eco Park. Overnight in Sohra.
  • Day 4: fit members trek to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat; others visit Arwah Cave, the Wei Sawdong falls viewpoint from the road and Dainthlen Falls. Overnight in Sohra.
  • Day 5: Mawlynnong village and the Riwai single root bridge, then the Umngot at Dawki for a boat ride; back to Shillong.
  • Day 6: drive to Guwahati; Kamakhya darshan if the flight time allows; fly home.

6 nights / 7 days – couples and active travellers

  • Day 1: fly to Guwahati, drive to Shillong.
  • Day 2: Krang Suri falls in the Jaintia Hills for the blue pool, with Phe Phe falls or the Nartiang monoliths on the way back.
  • Day 3: Laitlum at sunrise, Mawphlang sacred grove with a local guide, then on to Sohra.
  • Day 4: the full Nongriat day: double-decker bridge, then Rainbow Falls for those with energy left.
  • Day 5: Mawlynnong and Riwai, then Shnongpdeng for a riverside night; kayaking or snorkelling if operating.
  • Day 6: morning on the river, slow drive back to Shillong; dinner and live music.
  • Day 7: Shillong to Guwahati airport.

8 nights / 9 days – Meghalaya with Kaziranga

Follow the five-night plan above, then on Day 6 drive from Shillong to Kaziranga (six to seven hours), take jeep safaris in two ranges on Day 7, spend Day 8 at a tea estate or orchid park, and drive to Guwahati for the flight on Day 9. Kaziranga opened for the 2026–27 season in early October and is usually open until May. For more on safari ranges and the Tawang add-on, see our North East page.

Living root bridges: which one, and how fit you need to be

Khasi villagers have trained the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams for generations, and the bridges strengthen as the trees grow. Meghalaya has dozens of them. Which one you see should depend on your knees, not on a photograph.

BridgeAccessEffortSuits
Riwai single root bridge, near MawlynnongShort downhill path of a few minutesEasy; some uneven stepsMost people, including many seniors with a hand to hold
Double-decker bridge, Nongriat (from Tyrna, near Sohra)Concrete steps down into the valley, commonly counted at about 3,000–3,500, then the same back up; two swaying wire bridges on the wayHard; 5–7 hours round trip, more with Rainbow FallsFit adults and active teenagers; not for knee or heart problems
Other village bridges around Sohra and the Pynursla roadVaries from 15 minutes to an hour of stepsModerateThose who want a real walk without the full Nongriat day
  • Be honest about the climb back: going down to Nongriat is easy on the lungs and hard on the knees; coming back up is the real test, often in humid heat. If you do not walk briskly for an hour at home, choose Riwai.
  • Start early: leave Tyrna by 7–7:30 am, carry two litres of water per person, and hire a local guide. Bamboo walking sticks are available at the top.
  • Season: November to March is driest. In the monsoon the steps are slippery and streams can rise quickly.
  • Respect the bridges: village committees limit how many people stand on a bridge at a time and charge a small fee that goes to upkeep.

Sohra, Laitlum, Mawsmai, Krang Suri and Dawki: what each is really like

  • Nohkalikai Falls: one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India, seen from a viewing area a short walk from the car park. In winter the flow is thin but the pool turns turquoise; from July to October it is a roaring white column, if the cloud lifts.
  • Mawsmai Cave: a short, lit limestone cave near Sohra. Some passages are low and narrow and the floor is wet; fine for children, harder for large or claustrophobic adults.
  • Laitlum canyons: a ridge-top viewpoint about an hour from Shillong, with deep gorges falling away on every side. The view from the top needs almost no walking; the long stairway down towards Rasong village is optional and steep.
  • Krang Suri: a waterfall in the Jaintia Hills pouring into a blue pool. Swimming with life jackets is allowed in the dry season; there are steps down from the parking area. Usually closed or unsafe in heavy rain.
  • Dawki and Shnongpdeng: Dawki is the border town on the Umngot river, where the bridge leads towards the Bangladesh crossing; Shnongpdeng, a few kilometres upstream, is quieter and better for a longer stay. Boats look as if they float on glass from about November to April; in the monsoon the water turns muddy and boating may be stopped.
  • Mawlynnong: a Khasi village known for cleanliness, with bamboo dustbins and flowers along every path. It gets busy at midday; a morning visit is calmer.

Best time, monsoon reality and the November cherry blossom

MonthsWeatherGood forWatch out for
OctoberRain easing, falls still fullWaterfalls with clearer viewsOdd heavy shower
NovemberDry, 8–20°CClear river, cherry blossom, Diwali vacationPeak demand during Diwali vacation
December – FebruaryCold nights, often 3–10°C in Shillong; sunny daysClearest Umngot, root-bridge treksWaterfalls thin; dark by about 4:45 pm
March – AprilWarming, spring showers startQuiet roads, good valueHaze some days
MayPre-monsoon rainEscape from Ahmedabad heat; Shillong stays coolStorms in the afternoons
June – SeptemberVery heavy rain, especially at Sohra and MawsynramWaterfalls at their fullest, mist and greenCloud hides views, landslips, muddy river, wet steps

The monsoon, honestly: some Ahmedabad travellers want Meghalaya precisely for the rain, and the waterfalls between July and September are worth seeing. But a full day at Sohra can pass inside a cloud, Dawki boating can stop, and a landslip can close a road for hours. If you go in the rain, keep the plan loose, stay in Sohra rather than driving up and down, and do not include the Nongriat trek.

Cherry blossom, November 2026: Shillong's Himalayan cherry trees usually flower around mid-November, turning parts of the city and Ward's Lake pink. The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled for 20 and 21 November 2026 at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mahmawdkuk, about 30 minutes from central Shillong, as announced in late October 2026. Bloom timing depends on the weather, so we never promise trees in full flower on a given day.

Diwali vacation: Gujarat schools are off from 5 to 25 November 2026, which matches Meghalaya's best weather and the cherry blossom dates. With only one non-stop from Ahmedabad each day, those flights and Sohra's view rooms go early.

Registration and rules for visitors (as of November 2026)

  • No Inner Line Permit: Indian citizens do not need an ILP or any permit to enter Meghalaya.
  • Guest registration: since mid-2025 every hotel, homestay, resort and camp must register each guest on the state government's tourism system. Each traveller needs a valid photo ID at check-in, including at small homestays.
  • Proposed entry registration: in July 2026 the state government said it plans an ILP-style registration of visitors at entry points, starting with a facility at Umling on the Guwahati road. As of November 2026 it had not started; if it begins before your trip, we will tell you what is needed.
  • Village rules: many sights are on community land and charge small entry, parking and camera fees. Pay them; they fund paths and toilets. Drones are not allowed in several places.

Vegetarian and Jain food in Meghalaya, and other practical notes

Khasi food is built around rice, pork, fish and fermented flavours. That does not make Meghalaya difficult for vegetarians, but it does mean planning outside Shillong.

  • Guwahati: the easiest place in the region, with many Marwari-run pure-veg restaurants and sweet shops. Good for a full meal on arrival or before the flight home.
  • Shillong: several vegetarian restaurants around Police Bazaar and Laitumkhrah serve North Indian, South Indian and Gujarati-style food. Our Shillong hotels prepare Jain meals with notice.
  • Sohra: limited. The resorts we use cook vegetarian food on request; roadside places mostly share kitchens with meat. Strict Jain travellers should eat at the hotel and carry dry food for the day.
  • Dawki, Mawlynnong, Krang Suri: simple rice, dal and vegetable meals at best. Carry thepla, khakhra, dry fruit and ready-to-eat packs from Ahmedabad.
  • Seniors: choose Riwai over Nongriat, Laitlum's top viewpoint over the stairway, and plan one main outing a day. Pack thermals for November to February mornings.
  • Daylight and roads: it is dark before 5 pm in winter, and hill roads are narrow. We start days early and avoid long drives after sunset.
  • Money and signal: UPI works in Shillong and most of Sohra; carry cash for village fees and boats. Mobile data is weak around Nongriat, Dawki and Krang Suri.
  • Bigger families: extended families and friends travel as a private group on their own dates.

Meghalaya tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Meghalaya tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Meghalaya packages currently start at ₹17,999 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Meghalaya packages fall between ₹32,499 and ₹47,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Shillong?

No. Shillong's small airport at Umroi has no flight from Ahmedabad and only limited connections, mostly via Kolkata. The practical route is IndiGo's daily non-stop from Ahmedabad to Guwahati, about 2 hours 45 minutes as of November 2026, followed by a three-hour drive up to Shillong.

How many days are enough for Meghalaya?

Five nights is right for a first visit: two or three in Shillong and two in Sohra, with day trips to Dawki and Mawlynnong. Six nights adds Krang Suri or a riverside night at Shnongpdeng. Add two more nights if you want Kaziranga for rhino safaris.

Do Indian tourists need a permit to visit Meghalaya?

No. There is no Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens. Since 2025 every hotel, homestay and camp must register guests on the state tourism system, so each traveller needs a photo ID at check-in. A proposed entry-point registration was announced in July 2026 but had not started as of November 2026.

Is there a train from Ahmedabad to Guwahati?

Yes, a few weekly trains run through Ahmedabad Junction, including the Gandhidham–Kamakhya Express on Saturday nights and the Hapa–Naharlagun Express on Wednesday mornings, as of November 2026. The journey takes about 51 to 56 hours, so most families take the train one way at most and fly back.

How difficult is the double-decker root bridge trek at Nongriat?

It is hard. You go down roughly 3,000 to 3,500 steps from Tyrna and climb the same back, which takes five to seven hours round trip. It suits fit adults and active teenagers. People with knee, heart or breathing problems should see the easy Riwai root bridge near Mawlynnong instead.

When is the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in 2026?

It is scheduled for 20 and 21 November 2026 at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mahmawdkuk, about 30 minutes from central Shillong. The cherry trees usually flower around mid-November, but bloom depends on the weather. Concert tickets are sold separately. It overlaps with Gujarat's Diwali vacation, so book flights early.

Is Meghalaya good to visit in the monsoon?

Only if you want rain. From June to September the waterfalls are at their fullest, but cloud often hides Sohra's views, roads can be blocked by landslips, steps are slippery and the Dawki river turns muddy. October is a good middle ground, and November to April is best for clear views.

Is vegetarian and Jain food available in Meghalaya?

Shillong and Guwahati have good vegetarian restaurants, and our hotels there cook Jain meals with notice. In Sohra, Dawki, Mawlynnong and Krang Suri choices are limited and kitchens usually also cook meat, so eat main meals at the hotel and carry thepla, khakhra and dry snacks.

Is the Dawki river always clear?

No. The Umngot at Dawki and Shnongpdeng is clearest from about November to April, when boats appear to float on glass. In the monsoon the water becomes muddy and boating may be stopped. As of 2026 boats were quoted at roughly ₹700 to ₹1,000 per boat for two or three people.

Is Meghalaya suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, with the right choices. Shillong, Nohkalikai, Laitlum's top viewpoint, Mawlynnong and the Riwai bridge involve little walking. Skip the Nongriat trek and Krang Suri's steps if mobility is limited, plan one main outing a day, and pack warm clothes for cold mornings from November to February.

Should we stay in Sohra or only in Shillong?

Stay one or two nights in Sohra if you can. Clouds often roll in by late morning, so being there early gives you the clearest views of Nohkalikai and the valleys. It also lets you start the Nongriat trek at 7 am. Sohra hotels are fewer and simpler than Shillong's, so book ahead.
