North East Tour Packages from Ahmedabad
One non-stop flight to Guwahati, then the waterfalls and root bridges of Meghalaya, rhinos in Kaziranga and, for the bold, the high road to Tawang – private trips planned in Ahmedabad.
The North East is the holiday Gujarati families say they will do "one day" and then keep postponing, usually because it looks complicated from Ahmedabad. In practice it is simpler than it seems. A non-stop flight from SVPI lands at Guwahati in about three hours, and from there Shillong is a three-hour drive, Kaziranga four and a half, and the Bangladesh-border river at Dawki a long but scenic day out. Six to eight nights cover Meghalaya and Kaziranga comfortably; add four nights if you want Tawang and the Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh.
This page is for travellers from Ahmedabad who want to understand the region before they book. It explains the circuits that actually work in the time you have, honest costs by hotel level, the flight and the very long train option, Kaziranga's season and safari slots, the Arunachal permit, the monsoon question for Cherrapunji, and where vegetarian and Jain food is easy or hard. Sikkim belongs to the same region but is a separate trip, reached through Bagdogra; we mention it only where a combination makes sense. Prices shown on the packages below are live, and every trip is private with your own vehicle and driver.

North East package costs from Ahmedabad (2026)
Our North East and Meghalaya packages start at ₹17,999 per person today, with 24 on sale. The table shows typical per-person costs for two adults sharing, not counting the flight from Ahmedabad. Included: hotels or resorts with breakfast (dinner too in Kaziranga and Tawang), a private vehicle from Guwahati airport to Guwahati airport, sightseeing as listed, and the Arunachal permit where the route needs it.
| Circuit | Standard | Deluxe | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 nights – Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki and Mawlynnong | ₹15,500 – 20,000 | ₹21,500 – 28,000 | ₹34,000 – 50,000 |
| 6 nights – Meghalaya plus Kaziranga | ₹19,000 – 24,500 | ₹26,000 – 34,000 | ₹42,000 – 62,000 |
| 8 nights – Meghalaya, Kaziranga and Guwahati at an easy pace | ₹24,000 – 31,000 | ₹33,000 – 43,000 | ₹54,000 – 80,000 |
| 10 nights – Tawang via Dirang, then Kaziranga and Shillong | ₹32,000 – 42,000 | ₹44,000 – 58,000 | ₹70,000 – 1,05,000 |
The flight on top: Ahmedabad–Guwahati return tickets usually cost ₹12,000 – 20,000 per person when booked about six weeks ahead. With only one non-stop a day, the cheap seats on that flight go first; one-stop options via Delhi, Kolkata or Bengaluru fill the gap and are sometimes cheaper during Diwali.
Paid locally, listed on your quote: Kaziranga jeep safari (priced per vehicle per range, plus entry fees and camera charges), elephant safari when available, the Dawki boat on the Umngot river, entry tickets at Mawsmai Cave, Nohkalikai, Elephant Falls and the root bridges, the Sela Pass and Tawang war memorial camera fees, guides at the root-bridge treks, lunches and tips.
Why Tawang costs more: the drive needs a sturdier vehicle for four extra days, hotels in Dirang and Tawang charge mountain rates, and the road can force an extra night if Sela closes for snow. We build one buffer day into every Tawang plan.
Reaching the North East from Ahmedabad
By air: SVPI (AMD) to Guwahati (GAU)
- Non-stop: IndiGo runs one daily non-stop from Ahmedabad to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, taking about 3 hours, as of October 2026. Departure times move between morning slots from season to season, so we check before quoting.
- One-stop: several airlines connect via Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru in 5–8 hours. Useful for the return leg if you want an evening departure from Guwahati.
- Other airports: for Tawang, Tezpur (one-stop, few flights) and the newer Donyi Polo airport at Itanagar exist, but Guwahati remains the practical gateway from Ahmedabad because the onward roads start there.
- Arriving by early afternoon lets you drive to Shillong (about 100 km, 3 hours) the same day. If the flight lands late, we keep the first night in Guwahati and do the Kamakhya temple darshan next morning.
By train
A handful of weekly express trains from Gujarat to Assam leave from or pass through Ahmedabad and run to Guwahati or Kamakhya. The journey is around 50–55 hours, which is too long for most short holidays, but some retired couples like it for the slow passage across India. If you take it one way, fly back; we meet you at Guwahati or Kamakhya station.
Driving times from Guwahati
| Route | Approx. time |
|---|---|
| Guwahati – Shillong | 3 hours |
| Shillong – Sohra (Cherrapunji) | 1½ – 2 hours |
| Shillong – Dawki and Mawlynnong (day circuit) | 2½ hours each way to Dawki |
| Shillong – Kaziranga | 6 – 7 hours |
| Guwahati – Kaziranga | 4½ – 5 hours |
| Guwahati – Dirang (via Bhalukpong and Bomdila) | 9 – 10 hours |
| Dirang – Tawang (via Sela Pass and Sela Tunnel) | 4 – 5 hours |
Choosing your circuit: Meghalaya, Kaziranga or Tawang
The most common mistake is trying to fit everything – Meghalaya, Kaziranga, Tawang and Sikkim – into one week. The distances do not allow it. Pick by interest and the age of your group:
- Meghalaya only (5 nights): waterfalls, caves, living root bridges, the clear Umngot river at Dawki and the clean village of Mawlynnong. Moderate walking; the famous double-decker root bridge at Nongriat involves roughly 3,000-plus steps down and back up, so many families see the easier Riwai single root bridge instead.
- Meghalaya plus Kaziranga (6–8 nights): the best all-round North East holiday for families with children and seniors. Two safaris in Kaziranga give a very good chance of seeing the one-horned rhino, wild buffalo and elephants.
- Tawang (4–5 extra nights): monasteries, high lakes and the Sela Pass at about 4,170 m. Long mountain drives and cold nights; best for fit adults and couples. Not ideal with infants or anyone advised against altitude.
- Combining with Sikkim: possible on a 12–14 night trip, linking Guwahati and Bagdogra by a short flight or a long road day. Most Ahmedabad families do Sikkim and Darjeeling as a separate holiday.

Kaziranga season, safaris and the Arunachal permit
Kaziranga National Park
- Season: the park closes for the monsoon, usually from June to September, and reopens in early October. For 2026–27 it reopened on 3 October with jeep safaris; elephant safaris are restarted a few weeks later once preparations are done.
- Safari slots: jeep entry is in a morning and an afternoon slot. We book separate ranges for your two safaris – Central (Kohora) for rhino density, Western (Bagori) for open grassland, Eastern (Agaratoli) for birds.
- Best months: November to April. Grass is burned and cut from January, which improves visibility; March and April are warm but excellent for sightings.
- For seniors: jeeps are open and the tracks are bumpy but flat. Morning slots are cold in December and January – carry shawls and caps.
Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit (for Tawang)
- Indian citizens need an e-ILP, applied online on the Arunachal government portal. As of October 2026 the published tourist fee is ₹300 for up to three days and ₹500 for four to fourteen days. Children under 14 are covered with an accompanying adult.
- We apply for you once we have a photo ID and photograph for each traveller, and send the permit PDF on WhatsApp. Carry printouts; checks happen at Bhalukpong.
- Foreign nationals and OCI holders need a Protected Area Permit instead, with stricter rules. Tell us at the enquiry stage.
- Assam and Meghalaya need no permit for Indian tourists. Hotels in Meghalaya register guests' ID details as required by state law, so keep your ID handy at check-in.
Best time to visit the North East from Ahmedabad
Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, and that shapes every plan. Sohra and Mawsynram receive most of their rain between June and September, when the waterfalls are spectacular but views vanish in cloud and Dawki's river turns brown. From November to April the Umngot runs glass-clear and roads are reliable.
| Month | Meghalaya | Kaziranga | Tawang | For Gujarati travellers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | Clearing; falls still full | Reopens early in the month | Clear and cool | Navratri and the start of Diwali bookings |
| November | Dry; Dawki turning clear | Good | Cold, clear | Diwali vacation – book early |
| December | Cool and clear | Very good | Snow possible at Sela | Christmas break |
| January – February | Cold nights; clear river | Excellent visibility | Sela may close after snowfall | Uttarayan long weekend; quiet |
| March – April | Warming; spring blossom | Excellent sightings | Pleasant | After exams; good value |
| May | Pre-monsoon showers | Open in early May; check before booking late May | Pleasant | Summer vacation – Tawang and Shillong suit best |
| June – September | Heavy monsoon; landslides | Closed | Rain, landslide risk | Only for monsoon lovers in Meghalaya |
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Gujarat schools usually break for about three weeks around it, which coincides with the North East's finest weather. The single daily non-stop from Ahmedabad fills quickly for those dates, so book flights and Kaziranga resorts by August. In May vacation, put the emphasis on Shillong and Tawang, which stay cool, and keep Kaziranga at the start of the month.
Vegetarian and Jain food across the North East
Local cuisine in Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal leans towards meat, fish and fermented ingredients, so it helps to know where vegetarian food is easy.
- Guwahati: very easy. The Fancy Bazaar and Paltan Bazaar areas have a long-established Marwari community and many pure-veg and Jain-friendly restaurants and sweet shops.
- Shillong: good choice around Police Bazaar, with North Indian and South Indian vegetarian restaurants. Our hotels prepare Jain meals with notice.
- Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong: limited. Roadside eateries serve rice, dal and vegetables, but kitchens also cook meat. Strict Jain travellers should carry dry snacks and eat the main meal at the hotel.
- Kaziranga: resorts serve buffets with vegetarian dishes and cook Jain meals on request; Assamese veg thalis are worth trying.
- Dirang and Tawang: simpler menus; vegetarian food is available, Jain food will be basic. Carry thepla, khakhra and ready-to-eat packs for the long drive days.
Your meal plan – pure-veg, Jain, or no onion and garlic – is printed on each hotel voucher. Where options are thin, we say so in advance rather than leaving you to find out at dinner.
Practical points
- Daylight ends early in the North East – around 4.30 to 5 pm in winter – so drives start early and evenings are for rest.
- Carry a light rain jacket in every season for Meghalaya, good walking shoes with grip for root bridges and caves, and warm layers for Shillong evenings and Tawang.
- Kamakhya temple in Guwahati closes for a few days during the Ambubachi Mela in June and has long queues on festival days; ask us about the VIP darshan arrangement.
- Mobile data is patchy around Dawki and on the Tawang road; download offline maps.

How much does a North East tour package from Ahmedabad cost?
Our North East packages currently start at ₹17,999 per person for 3 nights. Most of our North East packages fall between ₹32,499 and ₹47,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.
Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Guwahati?
Yes. As of October 2026 IndiGo flies non-stop from Ahmedabad to Guwahati once a day, in about three hours. Other airlines offer one-stop connections via Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru. Because there is only one non-stop, its seats sell out first for Diwali and May vacation dates, so book early.
How many days are enough for a North East trip from Ahmedabad?
Five nights covers Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Six to eight nights adds Kaziranga and a gentler pace. If you want Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, plan ten or eleven nights, because the road from Guwahati takes two days each way with an overnight stop in Dirang.
When is Kaziranga National Park open?
Kaziranga closes for the monsoon, usually from June to September, and reopens in early October. For the 2026–27 season it reopened on 3 October with jeep safaris, and elephant safaris resume a little later. November to April is the best time, with better visibility once the tall grass is cut.
Do we need a permit for Meghalaya or Assam?
Indian tourists do not need a permit for Assam or Meghalaya. Hotels in Meghalaya record guests' identity details under state rules, so carry a photo ID. A permit is needed only for Arunachal Pradesh, which includes Tawang, and for Nagaland. We apply for the Arunachal e-ILP on your behalf.
How much is the Arunachal Inner Line Permit for Tawang?
As of October 2026, the Arunachal tourist e-ILP for Indian citizens costs ₹300 for up to three days and ₹500 for four to fourteen days, applied online. Children under 14 travel on an accompanying adult's permit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead. We handle the application and send the permit on WhatsApp.
Is the North East good for senior citizens from Gujarat?
Shillong, Kaziranga and Guwahati suit seniors well, with moderate drives and comfortable hotels. Cherrapunji involves some steps at viewpoints and caves, and the Nongriat root-bridge trek is too strenuous for most older travellers. Tawang is high and the drive is long, so seniors should consult their doctor before including it.
Can we visit Cherrapunji in the monsoon?
You can, but expect heavy rain, cloud covering viewpoints and occasional road blocks between June and September. The waterfalls are at their fullest then. For clear views, a clear Dawki river and reliable roads, travel between November and April. October is a good compromise with full falls and clearing skies.
Is vegetarian and Jain food available in Shillong and Kaziranga?
Yes. Guwahati has many pure-veg and Jain-friendly restaurants, Shillong has good vegetarian options around Police Bazaar, and Kaziranga resorts cook Jain meals on request. Smaller places like Sohra and Dawki have limited choices, so carry snacks. We print your meal requirement on every hotel voucher.
Can we combine Sikkim with a North East trip from Ahmedabad?
It is possible on a 12 to 14 night holiday, linking Guwahati and Bagdogra by flight or a long road day. Most Ahmedabad families find it more relaxed to do Meghalaya and Kaziranga on one trip and Sikkim with Darjeeling on another, since each region alone fills a week well.
Is Dawki river always crystal clear?
No. The Umngot river at Dawki is clearest from about November to April, when boats appear to float on glass. During the monsoon the water turns muddy and boating may be suspended. We plan the Dawki day for the clearest season and confirm boat operations before you go.
Is Tawang open in winter?
Tawang is reachable through most of winter, and the Sela Tunnel has made the route more dependable, but heavy snowfall can still close the Sela Pass area for a day or two. We keep a buffer day in every Tawang plan. Bum La and Madhuri Lake need separate Army permission and depend on snow conditions.
