For a Gujarati family taking its first trip abroad, Sri Lanka removes most of the usual worries. The clock is the same as in Ahmedabad, the tourist ETA now costs nothing for Indian passport holders, the flight is short, and a week covers tea country, an ancient rock fortress, a beach and a string of temples tied to the Ramayana. Grandparents who would hesitate at a twelve-hour journey to Europe are comfortable here, and couples get a honeymoon with a train ride, a colonial hill station and an Indian Ocean sunset for far less than Mauritius or Bali.

What has changed for Ahmedabad in 2026 is the flight. A Sri Lankan private airline began flying SVPI–Colombo non-stop this year, so for the first time you do not have to change planes in Mumbai or Chennai. This page explains when that flight is worth it and when a connection suits you better, then covers prices, the free ETA, three itineraries planned around Ahmedabad timings, the Ramayana circuit, a month table aligned with Gujarat's holidays, and a frank account of vegetarian and Jain eating in Sri Lanka – which is easier than most of Asia but has a couple of traps worth knowing.

Airfare from Ahmedabad: a return on the FitsAir non-stop typically costs ₹16,000–28,000 per person when booked five to six weeks out; one-stop fares on IndiGo, Air India or SriLankan via Mumbai, Chennai or Bengaluru usually sit between ₹18,000 and ₹32,000. Diwali, Christmas week and the May vacation can add ₹6,000–12,000 to either.

Paid locally or added on the quote: Sigiriya entry (around USD 35 for foreigners; SAARC visitors pay less), the Temple of the Tooth, Pinnawala, Peradeniya gardens and Yala jeep and park fees, train tickets, Bentota water sports, lunches and dinners, and a tip for the chauffeur-guide. One Indian rupee buys roughly 3.4–3.6 Sri Lankan rupees at present. Every quote lists these lines.

Flying from Ahmedabad to Colombo: non-stop or one-stop

All international flights to Sri Lanka land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo. That location helps: Kandy and the hills are to the north-east, so we usually drive straight inland on arrival and keep Colombo for the last day.

  • The non-stop, as of October 2026: FitsAir launched the route in 2026 and runs it about three times a week on narrow-body Airbus aircraft. Published timings have included an early-morning departure around 3–4 am on two days and a late-morning departure on a third. Schedules shift by season, so we check the operating days for your dates before quoting. SriLankan Airlines has announced Ahmedabad as a future route; we will add it here once it is bookable.
  • Night departures with seniors: leaving home in Bopal, Gandhinagar or Vadodara at midnight is hard on parents. We either use the daytime departure or a Mumbai connection, even when it costs a little more.
  • Same clock: Sri Lanka keeps Indian Standard Time, so there is no jet lag and no confusion over pick-up times.

Sri Lanka ETA for Indians in 2026

As of October 2026; rules change – we check before you book. Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has charged Indian passport holders nothing for the tourist Electronic Travel Authorisation. The ETA is still compulsory: it must be granted before you board, it allows a stay of 30 days, and it permits a second entry within that period, which is useful if you hop to the Maldives and back.

  • Where to apply: only the Department of Immigration and Emigration's official ETA portal. Several look-alike websites still charge USD 25 to 50 for a "Sri Lanka visa" that is free; we file it on the official site for every member of your family.
  • What you need: a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed return ticket, your first hotel address, and enough funds for the stay. The name must match the passport exactly, including any middle name.
  • Timing: approvals usually come within a day or two; we apply as soon as flights are issued. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.
  • Approval: we prepare and submit the application; the decision is with Sri Lanka immigration. Longer stays need an extension, which carries a fee.

Three Sri Lanka itineraries from Ahmedabad

  • Day 8: Colombo and flight to Ahmedabad.

Every itinerary is private: your own car and driver, your own dates, and a pace you set. Extended families from Gujarat travel together as a private group with a van and one guide.

The Ramayana trail: what Gujarati families should know

For many of our Ahmedabad clients the Ramayana sites are the reason for the trip, not an add-on. A few practical points help it go well.

  • They are working temples. Sita Amman, Munneswaram and Ramboda are maintained by Tamil Hindu communities, with daily pujas. Mornings are calmer and cooler; we time arrivals for the morning aarti where possible.
  • Distances are real. Chilaw is north of the airport and Rumassala is on the far south coast. Covering everything without rushing needs six nights; a four-night trip can include Seetha Eliya and Kelaniya only.
  • Belief and history differ. Guides present local tradition, such as Hanuman's footprints near the stream at Seetha Eliya or the Ussangoda plateau story, and we brief them to explain respectfully which sites are tradition and which are recorded history.
  • What to carry: clothing covering shoulders and knees, socks for hot stone floors, small rupee notes for offerings, and a shawl for Nuwara Eliya mornings, which can drop to 10°C.
  • Combining with Buddhist sites: the Temple of the Tooth and Kelaniya are Buddhist; white or light clothing is customary and no one turns their back to a Buddha image for a photo.

For Diwali departures, book flights by the end of August: the non-stop has limited seats and Mumbai connections fill with Gujarati families going everywhere at once. For May, choose the east-coast beach and you will have dry weather while Bentota is grey.

Veg and Jain food in Sri Lanka, honestly

Sri Lanka is one of the friendlier countries for vegetarians, but "vegetable curry" here is not always what a Gujarati kitchen would call vegetarian. Two things to know:

  • Maldive fish: dried, flaked tuna is a common seasoning in coconut sambol (pol sambol), some dal and some vegetable curries. In a restaurant, say clearly "no fish, no egg, no Maldive fish". In our hotels the request is written on the voucher.
  • Onion, garlic and root vegetables: nearly every curry starts with them, and potato, beetroot and carrot are staples. Jain meals are entirely possible, but only when the hotel kitchen cooks them separately – which is why we confirm it in writing before you travel.

Town by town: Colombo is easiest, with South Indian pure-veg restaurants in Wellawatte and Bambalapitiya and North Indian vegetarian places in the city. Kandy has a handful of vegetarian restaurants near the lake. Nuwara Eliya and Ella have fewer options, so meals at the hotel matter more. On the south coast, resort buffets always include vegetable curries, hoppers, string hoppers and rice. Many families carry theplas, khakhra and methi puri for the drives, which is perfectly allowed.

What to try: kiribath (milk rice), vegetable kottu made without egg on request, jackfruit curry, coconut roti, and wood-apple juice. Tea factories serve excellent plain tea; ask for milk separately if you prefer it Gujarati style.

Practical tips for travellers from Ahmedabad

  • Money: Indian rupees are not accepted. Carry USD or a forex card and draw Sri Lankan rupees at the airport ATM; cards work in hotels and larger shops.
  • SIM: buy a tourist SIM at the arrivals hall; Indian roaming packs are expensive by comparison.
  • Driving pace: hill roads are slow – 60 to 80 km can take two hours. We plan one long drive a day at most.
  • Train seats: reserved seats on the Ella line sell out in season; we book them once you confirm, and your car carries the luggage.
  • Health: drink bottled water, use mosquito repellent in the lowlands, and carry regular medicines with prescriptions.
  • Power: sockets are mostly the round-pin Indian type and UK-style three-pin; a universal adapter covers both.

Sri Lanka tour from Ahmedabad: FAQs

How much does a Sri Lanka tour package from Ahmedabad cost?

Our Sri Lanka packages currently start at ₹13,999 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Sri Lanka packages fall between ₹26,900 and ₹50,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Colombo?

Yes, since 2026. FitsAir, a Sri Lankan private airline, flies Ahmedabad–Colombo non-stop about three times a week, taking roughly three hours, as of October 2026. On other days you connect via Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru or Delhi, a total of six to ten hours. Schedules change by season, so we confirm operating days before booking.

Is the Sri Lanka visa free for Indians from Ahmedabad?

The tourist ETA has been free for Indian passport holders since 25 May 2026, as of October 2026. It is still mandatory and must be approved before you fly. It allows 30 days with a second entry. Apply only on the official immigration portal; we file it for each traveller, and approval is at the authority's discretion.

How many days are enough for Sri Lanka from Ahmedabad?

Four nights suit a honeymoon on the non-stop flight: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Bentota. Five or six nights add the Ella train or the full Ramayana circuit. Seven nights let a family include Sigiriya and a Yala safari. With a one-stop flight, add a night so the first day is not wasted.

Can Jain travellers manage food in Sri Lanka?

Yes, with planning. Most Sri Lankan curries use onion, garlic and root vegetables, and some use dried Maldive fish, so Jain meals must be cooked separately. We confirm the requirement in writing with every hotel. Colombo has the most pure-veg restaurants; in the hills, rely on hotel kitchens and carry theplas and khakhra.

Which Ramayana places can we cover from Ahmedabad in a week?

A six-night trip covers Munneswaram and Manavari near Chilaw, the Hanuman temple at Ramboda, Sita Amman temple at Seetha Eliya, Divurumpola, Ravana Falls near Ella, Rumassala at Galle and Kelaniya near Colombo. We pace it with one temple cluster a day and afternoon rest, suitable for senior citizens.

Is Sri Lanka good for a May vacation trip from Gujarat?

Yes, if you pick the right coast. The south-west monsoon brings rain to Bentota and Galle from May, but the east coast at Trincomalee and Pasikuda is dry and calm. Kandy, Sigiriya and the hills work in May too. Book flights by February, since Gujarat school-holiday demand is high.

Should we take the non-stop or connect via Mumbai?

Take the non-stop if its days fit your dates and you are comfortable with an early-morning departure and paying separately for bags. Connect via Mumbai or Chennai for a full-service fare with baggage, more choice of days, or when travelling with elderly parents who should not leave home at midnight.

Is Sri Lanka safe for families and senior citizens?

Sri Lanka is generally safe and welcoming for Indian families, and tourism has recovered strongly. With a private car and chauffeur-guide, the main care points are hill-road travel sickness, heat in the lowlands and steep steps at Sigiriya, which seniors can skip. We book hotels with lifts and keep drives short.

What currency should we carry from Ahmedabad?

Carry US dollars or a forex card. Indian rupees are not accepted in Sri Lanka, and UPI works only at a few merchants. Withdraw Sri Lankan rupees at the Colombo airport ATM for entrance fees, tips and small shops. Cards work at hotels, malls and larger restaurants.

Can we combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives from Ahmedabad?

Yes. Fly Ahmedabad to Colombo, spend four or five nights in Sri Lanka, then take the short Colombo–Malé flight for three nights at a Maldives resort, and return to Ahmedabad via Colombo or an Indian hub. The ETA's double entry helps if you route back through Colombo.

Is the Ella train suitable for elderly parents?

The reserved first- or second-class seats are comfortable, and the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch takes about three hours. Platforms have steps and trains can be crowded at boarding, so our chauffeur helps at the station and carries luggage by road. If anyone prefers, the same views are seen on the drive.
