A temple yatra to Madurai, Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari, or tea hills at Ooty and Kodaikanal – 8 Tamil Nadu packages, each a private trip from Ahmedabad.
Tamil Nadu is really two holidays. The first is the Dakshin Yatra – Madurai's Meenakshi temple, Rameshwaram's Ramanathaswamy temple with its 22 theerthams, the ghost town of Dhanushkodi, and the sunrise at Kanyakumari where three seas meet – the trip Gujarati families take with parents and grandparents, often as the southern leg of a Char Dham. The second is the Nilgiri hills – Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal, with the toy train, tea estates and lake boating – which couples and families with children choose for the May vacation.
Both are on this page, and every package is live and bookable today. Below the packages you will find a price guide for each circuit, flights and trains from Ahmedabad with drive times, day-wise itineraries, a temple-etiquette and darshan guide the big portals never provide, a month-by-month table, the Gujarati bhojanalayas you can rely on in Madurai and Rameshwaram, and the twelve questions our clients ask.

Tamil Nadu tour package price guide (2026)
Packages on this page start at ₹19,900 per person. Tamil Nadu is among the best-value states in India for a private trip: hotel rates in Madurai and Rameshwaram are modest, distances are moderate and the food is cheap. The bands below are per person on twin sharing, excluding flights, and include hotels with breakfast, a private air-conditioned car with driver, and all transfers and sightseeing.
| Trip | Standard (3★) | Deluxe (4★) | Premium (5★ / heritage) |

Add for flights: Ahmedabad–Chennai or Ahmedabad–Bengaluru return fares are usually ₹6,000–11,000 per person when booked 4–6 weeks ahead; a connection on to Madurai, Trichy or Coimbatore takes the return fare to about ₹9,000–15,000. Usually extra on the ground: special-darshan tickets at Meenakshi and Ramanathaswamy, the 22-theertham bath fee and attendant, Kanyakumari ferry tickets, the Nilgiri toy train fare, boating and entry fees in Ooty and Kodaikanal, lunches and dinners not listed, and a Tempo Traveller supplement for groups over six. Each appears as a line on your quote.
How to reach Tamil Nadu from Ahmedabad
- By air for the temple circuit: Ahmedabad has non-stop flights to Chennai (about 2 h 15 min) and Bengaluru (about 2 h), from where a 1-hour connection reaches Madurai (IXM) or Tiruchirappalli (TRZ). We prefer flying into Madurai and out of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) after Kanyakumari, so the road journey runs one way. One-stop itineraries from Ahmedabad to Madurai take 5–7 hours in total.
- By air for the hills: Coimbatore (CJB) is the gateway to Ooty and Coonoor, reached via Bengaluru or Chennai; Madurai is the nearest airport for Kodaikanal. For the complete trip we fly into Coimbatore and out of Madurai or Trivandrum.
- By train: the weekly Okha–Rameswaram Express passes through Ahmedabad and reaches Rameshwaram in about 45 hours, which suits senior groups who prefer the train for a yatra. Ahmedabad–Chennai expresses take 30–35 hours. For most clients we recommend flying one way and keeping the train for the return if the budget is tight.
- Getting around: private AC car (Dzire or Innova Crysta) or Tempo Traveller with a Tamil driver who knows the temple towns; every trip is a private, customised itinerary on your own dates, and extended families travel together as a private group.

Tamil Nadu itineraries – temple yatra and hill holiday

- Day 1: Fly Ahmedabad–Madurai via Chennai or Bengaluru; evening darshan at Meenakshi Amman temple and the night ceremony when the deity is carried to the bedchamber (around 9 pm).
- Day 2: Morning darshan again if desired, Thirumalai Nayak Palace, Gandhi Museum; drive to Rameshwaram (3 h) via the Pamban bridge; evening aarti at Ramanathaswamy temple.
- Day 3: Early-morning 22-theertham bath and darshan (allow 2–3 hours), then Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai by road, Kothandaramaswamy temple, Agni Theertham beach; evening free.
- Day 4: Drive to Kanyakumari (5½–6 h) with a lunch stop; sunset at the beach, Bhagavathy Amman temple darshan.
- Day 5: Sunrise, ferry to Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue, Gandhi Mandapam; drive to Thiruvananthapuram (2 h) and fly home, or on to Kerala.
5 nights / 6 days – Dakshin Yatra with Tiruchendur
Follow the 4-night plan, but from Rameshwaram drive to Tiruchendur (4 h) for the seaside Murugan temple and stay overnight; continue to Kanyakumari (2 h) the next morning via Suchindram's Thanumalayan temple. The extra night breaks the long Rameshwaram–Kanyakumari drive into two easy halves – the version we recommend for parents above 65. With one more night, add Srirangam and the Rockfort at Trichy on the way in, flying into Tiruchirappalli instead of Madurai.
4 nights / 5 days – Nilgiri hills for couples and families
- Day 1: Fly Ahmedabad–Coimbatore via Bengaluru; drive to Ooty (3 h) through the Nilgiri forest road with its 36 hairpin bends; evening at Ooty Lake.
- Day 2: Doddabetta peak, Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, tea factory and museum; afternoon Pykara lake and falls.
- Day 3: Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train from Ooty to Coonoor (about 1 hour through tunnels and tea); Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose in Coonoor; return to Ooty by car or stay in Coonoor.
- Day 4: Long scenic drive to Kodaikanal (6–7 h) via Palani, with a stop at the Palani Murugan temple for those who wish; evening walk at Coaker's Walk.
- Day 5: Kodai Lake boating, Bryant Park, Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves viewpoint, Pine Forest; drive to Madurai (3 h) and fly home.
7 nights / 8 days – complete Tamil Nadu
Join the two circuits: Coimbatore in, Ooty and Coonoor (2 nights), Kodaikanal (1 night), Madurai (1 night), Rameshwaram (1 night), Kanyakumari (1 night), Trivandrum out – the full state from hills to the southern tip, with Isha Foundation's Adiyogi near Coimbatore added on Day 1 if the flight lands early.
Temple darshan and etiquette guide – Madurai, Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari
Meenakshi Amman temple, Madurai
- Timings: roughly 5 am–12:30 pm and 4 pm–10 pm; the temple closes in the afternoon, so plan darshan for early morning or after 4 pm.
- Dress code: traditional and modest – saree, salwar-kameez or long skirt for women; dhoti, pyjama or full trousers with a shirt for men. Shorts, sleeveless tops and lungis are turned away.
- Phones and cameras: not allowed inside; lockers are available at the entrance. Footwear and large bags are also deposited outside.
- Darshan: a free queue and a paid special-entry queue of ₹50–100 per person that saves an hour or more on busy days. Non-Hindus may enter the complex but not the two main sanctums.
- Don't miss: the Hall of a Thousand Pillars museum and the evening ceremony around 9 pm.
Ramanathaswamy temple, Rameshwaram
- The 22 theerthams: pilgrims bathe at 22 wells inside the temple before darshan; a temple attendant draws the water and pours it over you at each well. Buy the theertham ticket (about ₹25) at the counter and go early – the bath starts from around 5 am and queues build after 7 am.
- What to carry: a change of dry clothes in a small bag (you will be fully wet), a towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes; dry clothes must be worn to enter the sanctum, and there are changing rooms. Many pilgrims first bathe at Agni Theertham (the sea in front of the temple) and then do the 22 wells.
- Dress code: as at Madurai; men enter the inner areas in dhoti or trousers without a shirt covering in some sections – follow the attendants' guidance.
- Dhanushkodi: the road now runs all the way to Arichal Munai at the tip; visit in the morning or by 4 pm, as the area has no lights and the police close access after dark.
Kanyakumari
- Sunrise and sunset: both are visible from the same beach between roughly October and March; on full-moon evenings in those months you can see the sun set and the moon rise together.
- Ferry to Vivekananda Rock: runs from about 8 am to 4 pm, closes in rough seas; queues are longest 9–11 am, so go at opening or after 2 pm. Tickets are modest; a fast-track ticket exists for a higher price.
- Bhagavathy Amman temple: men remove shirts before entering the sanctum; the diamond nose ring of the goddess is the famous sight.
Best time to visit Tamil Nadu – month by month
| Months | Weather | Good for | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| October – December | North-east monsoon on the coast – showers, especially November; hills cool and misty | Temple yatra is still fine with an umbrella; Diwali departures; Kanyakumari sunrise-sunset season begins | Moderate; Diwali week high |
| January – February | Dry and the most pleasant on the coast, 22–30°C; hills 8–18°C | Everyone; the ideal yatra months for senior citizens; Pongal festival in mid-January | High in the temple towns, moderate in the hills |
| March – April | Warming fast on the plains, 32–38°C; hills still pleasant | Hills; Chithirai festival at Madurai (usually April–May) draws huge crowds | Moderate |
| May – June | Hot plains; Ooty and Kodaikanal at their best (15–25°C), flower show in Ooty in May | Gujarat May vacation in the hills; temple yatra only with early mornings | Highest in Ooty and Kodaikanal |
| July – September | Light rain, humid on the coast; hills green with mist | Budget yatras, Aadi month festivals at temples; Rameshwaram quieter | Lowest of the year |
For Gujarati families with parents, January–February is the best yatra window; for the Diwali break the coast may see showers but temple visits are not affected. The May vacation belongs to the hills – book Ooty and Kodaikanal six weeks ahead for those dates.

Food, hotels and tips for Gujarati travellers
- Vegetarian and Gujarati food: Tamil Nadu is one of the easiest states in India for vegetarians – most restaurants in the temple towns are fully vegetarian, and idli, dosa, pongal and meals-on-a-leaf are available everywhere at low prices. Madurai and Rameshwaram both have Gujarati and Marwari bhojanalayas within walking distance of the temples, serving thali, rotli, dal-bhaat and khichdi; Kanyakumari has North Indian vegetarian restaurants near the beach. Jain food (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) is prepared by the bhojanalayas and by hotels on request, which we confirm in writing. In Ooty and Kodaikanal, Gujarati thali restaurants and Jain-friendly North Indian kitchens cater to the Gujarati and Marathi summer crowd.
- Hotel categories: in Madurai choose a hotel within a kilometre of the temple for early darshan; in Rameshwaram options are 2- and 3-star with a few newer 4-star properties – we pick the cleanest with a lift for seniors; in Kanyakumari a sea-view room lets parents watch the sunrise from the balcony. Ooty and Kodaikanal have everything from cottages to 5-star heritage resorts; a lake-view or valley-view room is the upgrade worth paying for.
- Pack: traditional clothes for temples (two sets, since Rameshwaram leaves you wet), a towel and plastic bag, slip-on footwear, sunscreen for Dhanushkodi, and a warm jacket for Ooty and Kodaikanal evenings even in May.
- Money and language: UPI works everywhere, including temple counters; Hindi is understood in hotels and by drivers but less in villages – our drivers translate at temples.
- Toy train tip: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway sells out weeks ahead in May and Diwali; we book the Coonoor–Ooty or Ooty–Coonoor leg (about an hour) as soon as reservations open and position your car at the other end, so nobody sits for the full five-hour Mettupalayam run unless they want to.

Tamil Nadu tour packages – frequently asked questions
How much does a Madurai–Rameshwaram–Kanyakumari package cost?
Tamil Nadu packages on this page start at ₹19,900 per person. A 4-night Dakshin Yatra in 3-star hotels with a private car costs ₹16,000–20,000 per person excluding flights; 4-star hotels take it to ₹22,000–28,000. Flights from Ahmedabad to Madurai via Chennai or Bengaluru, returning from Trivandrum, add about ₹9,000–15,000 per person.
How many days are needed for the Tamil Nadu temple circuit?
Four nights covers Madurai, Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari at a comfortable pace. Five nights adds Tiruchendur and splits the long Rameshwaram–Kanyakumari drive, which we recommend for seniors. Six to seven nights lets you add Trichy and Srirangam at the start or two nights in Kerala at the end.
How do we reach Madurai or Rameshwaram from Ahmedabad?
Fly Ahmedabad–Chennai or Bengaluru non-stop (about 2 hours) and connect to Madurai or Trichy (1 hour); total 5–7 hours. Rameshwaram is a 3-hour drive from Madurai. For the return we fly you from Thiruvananthapuram after Kanyakumari. The weekly Okha–Rameswaram Express via Ahmedabad is an option for groups who prefer the train.
Is Gujarati and Jain food available in Madurai and Rameshwaram?
Yes. Both towns have Gujarati and Marwari bhojanalayas near the temples serving thali, rotli, dal-bhaat and khichdi, and Tamil restaurants are almost all vegetarian anyway. Jain meals are prepared by the bhojanalayas and by hotels on request, which we confirm in writing. Kanyakumari, Ooty and Kodaikanal also have North Indian vegetarian and Gujarati thali options.
What is the dress code at Meenakshi and Ramanathaswamy temples?
Traditional and modest: saree, salwar-kameez or long skirt for women; dhoti, pyjama or full trousers with a shirt for men. Shorts, sleeveless tops, lungis and see-through fabrics are not allowed. Phones and cameras must be left in lockers at Madurai. At Rameshwaram carry a full change of dry clothes for after the 22-theertham bath.
What is the 22-theertham ritual at Rameshwaram and how long does it take?
Pilgrims bathe at 22 sacred wells inside the temple, with an attendant pouring water from each, before taking darshan. Buy the theertham ticket at the counter, start by 5–6 am to avoid queues, and allow 2–3 hours including darshan. Carry a towel, dry clothes and a plastic bag; changing rooms are provided. Many pilgrims first take a dip at Agni Theertham beach.
When is the best time for the Tamil Nadu yatra?
January and February – dry, 22–30°C, and the sunrise-and-sunset season at Kanyakumari. October–December sees north-east monsoon showers on the coast but darshan is unaffected, and Diwali departures work well. Avoid April–June on the plains for seniors because of heat; those months are ideal for Ooty and Kodaikanal instead.
Is the trip suitable for senior citizens?
Very suitable – it is our most-booked yatra for parents. We keep drives under four hours by adding the Tiruchendur night, choose hotels with lifts close to the temples, arrange wheelchairs at Meenakshi and the Kanyakumari ferry on request, schedule darshan in the cool hours, and book a Tempo Traveller for extended families so everyone travels together.
Can we combine Tamil Nadu with Kerala?
Yes, easily. After Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram is 2 hours away – add Kovalam beach (1–2 nights) or go on to Alleppey and Munnar for a 7–9 night south India trip. Alternatively, Madurai links to Thekkady in Kerala in 4 hours for a hills-and-temples route. We fly you home from Kochi in that case.
How do we book the Nilgiri toy train?
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs between Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty; the full climb takes about five hours and the Coonoor–Ooty section about an hour. Seats sell out weeks ahead in May and at Diwali, so we book the short Coonoor–Ooty leg when reservations open and keep your car at the other end. Tell us at booking if you want the full Mettupalayam run.
Ooty or Kodaikanal – which is better if we have time for only one?
Ooty for families with children and first-timers: more sights, the toy train, tea factories and easy access from Coimbatore. Kodaikanal for couples: quieter, a lake in the centre of town, Coaker's Walk and pine forests, and only 3 hours from Madurai so it combines with the temple circuit. The two are 6–7 hours apart, so doing both needs at least four nights.
What is usually not included in the Tamil Nadu package?
Flights unless added, special-darshan tickets at the temples, the 22-theertham ticket and attendant, Kanyakumari ferry tickets, the toy train fare, boating and entry fees in the hills, lunches and dinners not listed, camera fees, personal expenses and 5% GST. Our quote lists every inclusion and exclusion side by side.
