For Pune, Goa is less a faraway holiday and more the neighbour you visit whenever the calendar allows. It is close enough to drive in a day, there is an evening train that delivers you to Madgaon before sunrise, and a handful of non-stop flights from Pune airport cover the distance in roughly an hour and a quarter. That choice of three ways to travel is the first thing that sets a Goa trip from Pune apart: the right one depends on how many of you are going, how many days you have, and whether the journey itself is part of the fun.

This page is written for travellers leaving from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the surrounding towns. It sets out realistic package costs with and without a car from Pune, a plain comparison of road, rail and air, three itineraries built around those three ways of reaching Goa, a planning block for Maharashtra's long weekends and festival holidays, a month-by-month table, and food notes for Maharashtrian vegetarian families. Vibrant Holidays plans every trip from our office in Ahmedabad and books it with you on WhatsApp or phone; there is no Pune branch, and we say so up front. Every Goa trip we arrange is private, with your own car and driver, and the packages shown on this page carry their live prices.

Getting there from Pune: what to budget

OptionTypical costWorks best for
Return flight Pune – Goa₹6,500 – 12,000 per person when booked 3–5 weeks ahead; more on long weekendsCouples and short trips
Goa Express, 3AC returnAbout ₹2,000 – 2,800 per personFamilies who like trains, budget trips
Private sedan or Innova from Pune with driver, 4–5 days round trip₹28,000 – 46,000 for the vehicle, including driver allowance and tollsGroups of four to seven, road-trip lovers

Do the arithmetic for your group. Four adults flying on a Diwali weekend can spend ₹45,000 or more on tickets alone, while one Innova from Pune carries all four with luggage and stays with you in Goa – no separate sightseeing car needed. For two people, flying almost always wins.

Extra on the ground: water sports at Calangute or Baga (₹1,500–3,500 a person for a combo), the Mandovi sunset cruise (₹500–800), the Grande Island snorkelling boat (₹1,800–2,800), entry and camera fees at forts and churches, beach-shack meals, and the ₹4–8 per km parking and fuel costs if you take a self-drive scooter. Your quote lists each one so nothing is a surprise.

Pune to Goa by road, rail or air: a straight comparison

By road – about 450 km

Goa is the classic Pune road trip, and the drive is good for most of the way. You leave the city on the Mumbai–Bengaluru highway (NH48) past Satara and Karad towards Kolhapur, and then choose how to cross the Western Ghats into Goa.

Route from PuneDistanceDriving timeNotes
NH48 to Kolhapur, then Ajara – Amboli ghat – Sawantwadi – North GoaAbout 450 – 470 km9 – 10½ hoursMost scenic; Amboli waterfalls and mist in the monsoon; good for Mapusa, Calangute, Anjuna
NH48 to Belagavi, then Chorla ghat to Valpoi and PanajiAbout 460 – 480 km9½ – 11 hoursQuieter forest road; avoid after dark
NH48 to Belagavi, then Khanapur – Anmod ghat – PondaAbout 500 km10 – 11½ hoursBest for South Goa; ghat section can be slow with trucks

Leave Pune by 5.30 am to cross Katraj and the Khambatki ghat before traffic, breakfast at Satara or Karad, and reach Goa by mid-afternoon. A Kolhapur stop for Mahalaxmi darshan and a misal lunch adds about two hours. Our drivers do not tackle the ghats at night, so on a late start we plan a halt at Kolhapur or Belagavi.

By train – the Goa Express

The Goa Express leaves Pune Junction in the evening and runs via Satara, Miraj, Belagavi and Londa, coming down the ghats through Castle Rock to reach Madgaon early the next morning – about 12½ hours in all. Some Pune–Ernakulam and Pune–Kochuveli services also stop at Madgaon on different days. We collect you at Madgaon (or Vasco) and the stay begins with breakfast. Book 3AC or 2AC as soon as the reservation window opens; long-weekend berths go within days.

By air from Pune airport (PNQ)

Pune International Airport at Lohegaon has a small number of non-stop departures to Goa each day, mostly to Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) in North Goa, operated by airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air and Fly91, with flying time around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 minutes. Dabolim (GOI) is closer to South Goa and is usually served one-stop or on fewer departures from Pune, so check the airport code before booking. Because seats are limited, Pune–Goa fares jump sharply on long weekends; we watch them and tell you when the train or car is better value. Driving to Mumbai airport for a Goa flight rarely makes sense from Pune – the three-hour transfer cancels out the time saved.

Which Goa airport for which hotel

Mopa is about 45–60 minutes from Morjim, Ashwem, Arambol and Anjuna, and about an hour from Calangute. From Mopa to Colva, Benaulim or Palolem is two hours or more. If your resort is in South Goa and only a Mopa flight fits, we build the long transfer into the first day rather than pretending it is short.

Three Goa itineraries for travellers from Pune

4 nights / 5 days – the Amboli road trip (friends or two families)

  • Day 1: Pick-up from your home in Pune at 5.30 am. Breakfast near Satara, coffee stop at Kolhapur, then Amboli ghat and its viewpoints. Reach your North Goa hotel near Anjuna or Vagator by late afternoon; sunset at Chapora Fort.
  • Day 2: North Goa coast at your pace – Ashwem and Morjim in the morning, the Anjuna flea market if it is a Wednesday, evening in a beach shack at Vagator.
  • Day 3: Panaji old quarter of Fontainhas, Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral at Old Goa, then the ferry to Divar island for its village lanes. Optional casino evening on the Mandovi.
  • Day 4: Free day for water sports at Calangute, or a drive north to Arambol and the Keri beach at the Tiracol creek.
  • Day 5: Early breakfast, drive back via Sawantwadi (wooden toys, a good stop for children) and Kolhapur. Reach Pune by late evening.

The same car and driver stay with you all five days, so there is no separate Goa taxi to pay. Drivers rest overnight at the hotel; we arrange driver accommodation in the quote.

3 nights / 4 days – fly in, slow South Goa (couples)

  • Day 1: Morning flight from Pune. Transfer to a quiet resort at Cavelossim, Mobor or Agonda; afternoon by the pool, sunset on the beach.
  • Day 2: Cabo de Rama fort, Cola beach lagoon and Palolem; dolphin-spotting boat from Palolem in calm weather.
  • Day 3: Slow morning; spice plantation lunch near Ponda, Mangeshi and Shantadurga temples on the way back.
  • Day 4: Check out and fly back to Pune.

5 nights / 6 days – Goa Express family trip with a hinterland day

  • Day 1: Evening Goa Express from Pune Junction; dinner packed from home.
  • Day 2: Arrive at Madgaon early; transfer to a family resort in Benaulim or Varca with an early check-in arranged. Rest, then the beach.
  • Day 3: South Goa – Colva, Betul and the Big Foot open-air museum at Loutolim, which children enjoy.
  • Day 4: Move to Candolim or Calangute. On the way, Old Goa churches and a Mandovi river cruise in the evening.
  • Day 5: Netravali or Mhadei hinterland day – Savri waterfall walk in season, or Aguada Fort and Sinquerim beach if the children want the sea.
  • Day 6: Fly back to Pune from Mopa, or take the Goa Express from Madgaon or Thivim if seats fit your dates.

Long weekends and festival holidays from Pune

Most Pune bookings for Goa cluster around a few predictable weekends, and so do the crowds on NH48. Plan these early:

  • Diwali (November in 2026): Goa's season has just opened, the weather is dry, and resorts price Diwali week high. Book six to eight weeks ahead.
  • Christmas to New Year: the most expensive week of the Goa year. Expect minimum-stay rules of three or four nights and gala-dinner surcharges. Pune families often prefer the second week of January instead.
  • Republic Day, Holi and Good Friday weekends: three-day weekends that fill Pune–Goa flights and the Goa Express. Thursday-night departures are calmer.
  • Maharashtra Day (1 May) and the summer vacation: Pune schools usually close from late April to the second week of June. Goa is hot and humid by May, so we suggest mornings on the beach, afternoons by the pool, and resorts with good shade.
  • Ganeshotsav: many Pune families stay home for the ten days; the weeks just after are some of the cheapest of the year in Goa, with the monsoon easing.

Traffic tip for drivers: the Khambatki ghat near Khandala-Satara and the Kolhapur bypass slow down badly on the first evening of any long weekend. Starting before dawn, or a day early, saves hours.

The monsoon drive from Pune is worth a word of its own. From late June to September the Amboli and Chorla ghats are green and full of waterfalls, but landslides and fog do happen. We plan only daytime driving and keep a buffer evening in case a ghat is closed.

Food and practical tips for Pune travellers in Goa

Vegetarian and Maharashtrian food

  • Goan Hindu cooking is close to Malvani and Konkani food, so a Pune palate finds plenty to like – solkadhi, varan-bhaat, kokum, kulith and bhaji-pav for breakfast. Ask for "Goan Hindu" or "Saraswat" style restaurants in Panaji, Mapusa, Ponda and Margao.
  • Pure-veg thali restaurants are easy to find in Panaji, Mapusa, Calangute and Margao. In beach-shack areas most menus are mixed; we suggest a couple of veg-only places near your hotel.
  • Jain meals are possible at most 4- and 5-star resorts with a day's notice. We confirm the requirement in writing on your hotel voucher.
  • Road-trippers can stop for misal and pithla-bhakri on the Satara–Kolhapur stretch, and the Kolhapur bypass has good pure-veg family restaurants.

Practical notes

  • Goa beaches have lifeguards only in marked zones. Red flags mean no swimming – especially in May and the monsoon.
  • Self-drive scooters are popular, but the rider needs a valid licence and helmet; police checks are common around Calangute.
  • If you drive your own car or a Pune taxi into Goa, Goa's border entry tax for outside vehicles applies; our quotes include it.
  • Carry light cottons, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen; in the monsoon add a rain jacket and sandals rather than sports shoes.
  • UPI is accepted at most places, but keep some cash for beach shacks, ferries and village temples.

Goa tour from Pune: FAQs

How much does a Goa tour package from Pune cost?

Our Goa packages currently start at ₹5,999 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Goa packages fall between ₹11,999 and ₹24,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from {$from} are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is it better to drive or fly from Pune to Goa?

For two people on a short trip, flying is usually quicker and similar in cost. For four or more, a private car from Pune often works out cheaper once Goa sightseeing is included, because the same car stays with you all week. The drive takes nine to eleven hours, so it suits trips of four nights or longer rather than a two-night weekend.

Which is the best road route from Pune to Goa?

For North Goa, most drivers take NH48 to Kolhapur and then the Amboli ghat via Sawantwadi, about 450 km. For Panaji, the Belagavi and Chorla ghat route is quieter. For South Goa, Belagavi, Khanapur and the Anmod ghat to Ponda is easiest. We avoid ghat sections after dark and choose the route by where your hotel is.

Are there direct flights from Pune to Goa?

Yes, a few non-stop flights a day connect Pune airport with Goa, mostly to Mopa in North Goa, with flying time of about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 minutes. Schedules and airlines change by season, and Dabolim has fewer direct options from Pune. We check what operates on your dates and match the airport to your hotel.

Which train goes from Pune to Goa?

The Goa Express is the most convenient: it leaves Pune Junction in the evening and reaches Madgaon early next morning, roughly 12½ hours via Miraj, Belagavi and Londa. A few weekly long-distance trains towards Kerala also stop at Madgaon. Book 3AC or 2AC early for long weekends, as berths sell out quickly.

How many days do we need for Goa from Pune?

By air, two or three nights is enough for a long weekend in one part of Goa. By train, plan at least three nights in Goa since the journey uses two evenings. By road, four or five nights is the sensible minimum, because day one and the last day are mostly spent driving through the ghats.

Can you send a car from Pune to pick us up for Goa?

Yes. We arrange a sedan, Innova or Tempo Traveller with a driver who collects you at home in Pune, drives you to Goa, stays for local sightseeing and brings you back. The quote includes driver allowance, tolls, parking and the Goa entry tax for outside vehicles, so the vehicle cost is one clear figure.

Is the Amboli ghat safe to drive in the monsoon?

Amboli is open through the monsoon and is popular for its waterfalls, but fog and occasional landslides slow it down. We drive only in daylight, use experienced ghat drivers and keep the Belagavi–Chorla or Anmod route as a backup. If heavy-rain alerts are issued, we adjust the departure time or add a night halt in Kolhapur.

Will we get Maharashtrian vegetarian food in Goa?

Yes. Goan Hindu and Konkani cooking shares a lot with Malvani food – solkadhi, varan, kokum curries and bhaji-pav. Pure-veg thali restaurants are common in Panaji, Mapusa, Ponda and Margao. Beach areas have more mixed menus, so we share a short list of veg restaurants near your hotel and confirm Jain needs in writing.

When is the cheapest time to go to Goa from Pune?

June to September is cheapest, with five-star resorts often at half their December rates. The sea is too rough for swimming then, but the drive through Amboli and the hinterland waterfalls are at their best. Late September, after Ganeshotsav, and April are also good value with fewer people.

Do you have an office in Pune?

No. Vibrant Holidays is based in Ahmedabad, and our team plans Goa trips for Pune travellers over WhatsApp and phone. You receive the quote, day-wise plan, vouchers and invoice as PDFs, pay by bank transfer or UPI, and get 24×7 support from our team while you are travelling.

Can we combine Goa with Kolhapur or the Konkan on the way from Pune?

Yes. A Kolhapur stop for the Mahalaxmi temple and a night at Amboli fits easily on a road trip. Coastal travellers can instead go down the Konkan via Ratnagiri, Ganpatipule and Tarkarli with a night or two on the way and continue into North Goa. We plan the overnight halts so no driving day exceeds about seven hours.
