Goa Tour Packages from Chennai

A west-coast beach that feels nothing like Marina or ECR – Portuguese-era churches, Konkani kitchens and quiet South Goa sand, planned privately around Chennai flight times and Tamil Nadu school holidays.

Best timeNovember to February; Pongal and the December half-yearly break are peak
Ideal trip4 to 5 nights
From ChennaiNon-stop flights about 1½ hours; weekly train about 21–22 hours
Good forFamilies, couples, heritage lovers, friends

People in Chennai already live by the sea, so a Goa holiday has to offer something Marina, Elliot's or the ECR resorts cannot. It does. The Arabian Sea side is calmer and clearer from November to March, the sand in South Goa runs for kilometres without a crowd, and the towns carry four and a half centuries of Portuguese history that you will not find anywhere in Tamil Nadu: whitewashed churches, painted Latin-quarter houses, Hindu temples rebuilt in the hills of Ponda, and a Konkani food culture built on coconut, kokum and rice. For many of these families, Goa ends up being less about parties and more about a slower, different coast.

This page is written for travellers starting in Chennai. It gives realistic Goa package costs with airfares, explains which Goa airport the MAA flights use and why the late arrival times matter, covers the weekly train from Chennai Central, sets out three day-wise plans, and maps Goa onto the Pongal, Deepavali and Tamil Nadu school calendar. It also answers the practical question we hear most from Tamil families: will we get our kind of vegetarian food. Vibrant Holidays has no Chennai office; your trip is planned by our team in Ahmedabad and booked on WhatsApp or phone, and every Goa package below shows its live price.

Goa package cost from Chennai: 2026 price guide

There are 24 Goa packages on sale at the moment, starting at ₹5,999 per person. The ranges below are indicative per-person costs on twin sharing for land arrangements only: hotel with breakfast, arrival and departure transfers, and a private AC car with driver on sightseeing days. Flights or train tickets from Chennai are extra.

Trip lengthStandard (3-star)Deluxe (4-star resort)Premium (5-star beachfront)

4 nights – two nights each side₹12,500 – 17,500₹20,500 – 30,000₹43,000 – 66,000
5 nights – with Dudhsagar and a Palolem day₹15,000 – 21,000₹25,500 – 36,000₹53,000 – 82,000
6 nights – train arrival, slow family week₹18,000 – 25,000₹30,000 – 43,000₹62,000 – 95,000

Airfare from Chennai: as of November 2026, a return economy ticket between Chennai and Goa usually costs about ₹9,000 – 15,000 per person when booked four or five weeks out. Around Pongal, the last week of December and New Year it can climb to about ₹18,000 – 26,000. Because only a handful of non-stop flights operate each day, the cheap seats on the non-stop sell out first; a one-stop routing via Bengaluru or Hyderabad is sometimes cheaper but adds three to six hours.

Not included on the ground: water sports, the Dudhsagar forest jeep, river and dolphin boat trips, casino entry, scooter hire, entry fees at museums and forts, and meals other than breakfast. Your quote lists typical rates so you can budget before you leave.

Where the money goes: South Goa resorts cost more than North Goa hotels of the same star rating, a sea-view room can add 20–30%, and anything between 22 December and 2 January is priced as peak. A family that moves its trip from Christmas week to the first days of the half-yearly break, or to late January, often saves a third on the same hotel.

Chennai to Goa: MAA flights, the Friday train and the road

Non-stop flights from Chennai International Airport (MAA)

As of November 2026, non-stop flights between Chennai and Goa are flown mainly by IndiGo and take about 1 hour 30 minutes. Most land at Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco in the centre-south of the state, and there are also non-stops to Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) in the far north on some days of the week. The Dabolim services tend to leave in the afternoon or early evening, which puts you in Goa between about 5 pm and 8.30 pm. Schedules change every season, so we confirm what is flying on your dates before fixing the hotel.

Arrival airportTypical Chennai departureDrive to South Goa (Colva, Benaulim, Varca)Drive to North Goa (Candolim, Calangute)
Dabolim (GOI)Afternoon to early evening30 – 45 minutesAbout 1 hour 15 minutes
Mopa (GOX)Around midday, not every dayAbout 2 hours45 – 60 minutes

The two Goa airports are roughly 65–75 km apart by road, about 1½ to 2 hours with traffic. That is why we match the airport to the hotel: an evening Dabolim arrival followed by a two-hour drive to Morjim is a tiring start, while the same flight into a Benaulim resort has you at dinner within the hour.

By train from Chennai Central

The Chennai Central–Vasco da Gama weekly express (17311) leaves Chennai Central on Fridays in the afternoon, runs via Katpadi, Bengaluru, Hubballi and Londa, and comes down the Braganza ghat past Dudhsagar falls to reach Madgaon around noon on Saturday – about 21 to 22 hours in all. It suits families who enjoy the train, want to save on airfares for five or six people, or simply want to see Dudhsagar from the window. If Friday does not fit, the other choice is an overnight train to Bengaluru and the daily Yesvantpur–Vasco express onward, though that means changing stations. Train timings are as of November 2026 and should be checked when booking; we can begin the package with a pick-up at Madgaon.

By road

Goa is roughly 880–920 km from Chennai by road via Vellore, Krishnagiri, Bengaluru's outer ring, Tumakuru and Hubballi – a 15–17 hour drive that needs a night halt in Hubballi or Dharwad. It only makes sense as part of a longer Karnataka road trip; for a Goa holiday of under a week, flying is cheaper once fuel, tolls and extra nights are counted.

Three Goa itineraries built around Chennai flight times

3 nights / 4 days – Pongal break in South Goa (families)

  • Day 1: Afternoon flight from Chennai to Dabolim; 40 minutes to a resort in Benaulim or Varca. No sightseeing – dinner and an early night, since you land in the evening.
  • Day 2: Old Goa in the morning: the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, then lunch in Panaji and an hour walking the lanes of Fontainhas. Back south by late afternoon for the beach.
  • Day 3: Cabo de Rama fort and a drive to Palolem; a short boat ride if the sea is calm. Evening at Colva.
  • Day 4: Morning swim, then Margao market for cashews and kokum before the flight home.

4 nights / 5 days – North and South for couples

  • Day 1: Midday flight to Mopa on a day it operates; check in near Ashwem or Mandrem by mid-afternoon and catch the sunset from the beach.
  • Day 2: Chapora fort early, breakfast in Assagao, Anjuna and Vagator by afternoon, and the Arpora Saturday night market if your dates allow.
  • Day 3: Move south via Reis Magos fort and Panaji; a Mandovi sunset cruise before checking in at a quiet resort in Cavelossim.
  • Day 4: A free day – a spa, a long walk on Varca beach, or a kayak trip on the Sal river.
  • Day 5: Fly back from Dabolim, half an hour away, so there is no long drive on the last morning.

6 nights / 7 days – Friday train down, flight back (summer vacation)

  • Day 1 (Friday): Afternoon departure from Chennai Central; dinner on board.
  • Day 2: Dudhsagar falls from the train window before Madgaon around noon. Pick-up and check-in at a South Goa resort with a children's pool.
  • Day 3: Shantadurga and Mangueshi temples at Ponda, a spice plantation with a vegetarian lunch, and the Goa Chitra or Big Foot museums for the children.
  • Day 4: Beach day and evening at Colva.
  • Day 5: Move to Candolim via Old Goa; afternoon at Fort Aguada.
  • Day 6: A dolphin trip from Sinquerim and a slow afternoon at the hotel pool.
  • Day 7: Flight to Chennai from Mopa or Dabolim, whichever suits the schedule that week.

All three are private trips: your own car and driver, your own dates and hotels you approve before paying. Extended families and friend groups travel as a private group, usually in a Tempo Traveller.

Pongal, Deepavali and Tamil Nadu school holidays

Bookings from Tamil Nadu cluster around a few dates. Two of them – the December half-yearly break and Pongal – fall right in Goa's best weather, so they also fall in its most expensive weeks.

BreakUsual timingGoa at that timeBook by
Quarterly exam holidaysLate September to early OctoberEnd of monsoon, green and humid; water sports restart in OctoberThree weeks ahead
DeepavaliOctober or NovemberSeason opening, good rates before ChristmasFive to six weeks ahead
Half-yearly holidaysLast week of December to early JanuaryChristmas and New Year peak, rates two to three times normalSeptember
PongalMid-January (Thai Pongal is 15 January in 2027)Ideal weather, prices easing after New YearSix to eight weeks ahead
Summer vacationLate April to early JuneHot; pools and AC rooms; sea rough from late MaySix weeks ahead

The northeast monsoon helps. October to December is Chennai's wet season, and it is exactly when Goa turns dry. A November or early December trip gets you out of Chennai's cyclone-season rain and into sunshine, often at pre-Christmas prices.

Pongal tip: the long weekend runs four days, from Bhogi to Kaanum Pongal, and many Chennai families want to be home for Thai Pongal itself. We often plan Goa for the days just after – Mattu Pongal onward – when fares fall quickly.

A different Goa: heritage, Konkani food and quiet South Goa

Travellers who have grown up on Marina crowds and ECR weekends usually tell us the same thing: they want Goa to feel different, not louder. These are the parts of Goa we put into their plans.

  • Old Goa and Fontainhas: the UNESCO-listed churches of Old Goa, including the Basilica that holds the relics of St Francis Xavier, and Panaji's Latin quarter with its yellow and blue houses. Go before 10 am; it gets hot by noon.
  • Divar and Chorao islands: short government ferries across the Mandovi to sleepy villages, old houses and the Salim Ali bird sanctuary in the mangroves of Chorao.
  • Houses and museums: the Braganza house at Chandor and the Goa Chitra museum at Benaulim show how Goans lived before and after Portuguese rule.
  • Ponda temples: Mangueshi, Shantadurga and Mahalasa, with their lamp towers and calm courtyards, feel familiar to Tamil temple-goers yet have a distinct Konkan style.
  • Quiet beaches: Varca, Cavelossim, Agonda and Galgibag are long, clean and empty on weekdays. The water on this coast is clearer than the Bay of Bengal in winter and gentler to wade in.
  • Konkani kitchens: the Goan Hindu thali – rice, dal-like varan, a coconut-based curry, khatkhatem mixed vegetables and kokum sol kadhi – is the closest Goa comes to a Tamil meals plate, and it is vegetarian.

Food and practical tips for Chennai families in Goa

Tamil vegetarian food

  • Breakfast: idli, dosa and pongal-style dishes are on most 4- and 5-star resort buffets. Udupi restaurants in Panaji, Margao, Mapusa and Vasco serve tiffin all day.
  • Lunch and dinner: curd rice, sambar and rasam are not standard on Goan menus. We ask the resort kitchen in writing to add them to your meal plan, or list restaurants near your hotel that serve a South Indian meals plate.
  • Jain or no-onion-garlic: confirmed on the hotel voucher; South Goa resorts handle it with a day's notice.
  • Coffee: filter coffee is hard to find outside a few Udupi places. Many families carry a small filter and decoction powder.
  • Beach shacks: vegetarian dishes are available, but kitchens also cook seafood. Strict vegetarians do better at the resort or at pure-veg restaurants.

Other tips

  • Language: Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English are spoken. Tamil is rarely heard, but English works everywhere you will go.
  • Goa's sun feels harsher than Chennai's sea breeze suggests. Carry sunscreen, hats and cotton clothes, and keep children out of the midday sun.
  • Swim only where lifeguards and green flags are posted. From late May to September the sea is closed for swimming.
  • UPI is accepted almost everywhere; keep some cash for ferries, small temples and parking.
  • App cabs are limited and local taxis expensive, so a private car on sightseeing days usually saves money.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at churches and temples, and expect to leave footwear outside temples, as at home.

Goa tour from Chennai: FAQs

How much does a Goa tour package from Chennai cost?

Our Goa packages currently start at ₹5,999 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Goa packages fall between ₹11,999 and ₹24,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Are there direct flights from Chennai to Goa?

Yes. As of November 2026, IndiGo flies non-stop from Chennai to Dabolim most days and to Mopa on some days of the week, with about 1 hour 30 minutes in the air. Only a few non-stops run each day, so they fill quickly around Pongal and Christmas. We confirm the operating flights for your dates.

Which Goa airport should I fly to from Chennai?

Fly to Dabolim if you are staying in South Goa or Panaji, and to Mopa for Mandrem, Morjim, Anjuna or Calangute. The airports are about 1½ to 2 hours apart by road. Since many Chennai flights land in the evening, landing close to the hotel matters more than usual.

What is the airfare from Chennai to Goa?

As of November 2026, a return economy fare usually costs about ₹9,000 to 15,000 per person when booked four to five weeks ahead. Pongal week, Christmas and New Year can push it to about ₹18,000 to 26,000. Fares change daily, so we quote the flight and the land package together.

Is there a direct train from Chennai to Goa?

Yes, one a week. The Chennai Central–Vasco da Gama weekly express leaves Chennai Central on Friday afternoons and reaches Madgaon around Saturday noon, about 21 to 22 hours, passing Dudhsagar falls on the way. On other days, travellers take a train to Bengaluru and the daily Yesvantpur–Vasco express onward.

How many days are enough for Goa from Chennai?

Four nights is the sweet spot: two in the south, two in the north. Three nights works for one side of Goa. Since afternoon and evening arrivals use up most of day one, plans shorter than three nights rarely feel worth the airfare.

Is Goa good during the Pongal holidays?

Very good. Mid-January has dry, sunny weather and a calm sea, and hotel rates are lower than in the Christmas fortnight. Flights are busy around Bhogi and Thai Pongal, so many families travel from Mattu Pongal onward, when fares ease. Book six to eight weeks ahead.

Will we get South Indian vegetarian food in Goa?

Yes. Resort buffets usually have idli and dosa at breakfast, and Udupi restaurants in Panaji, Margao, Mapusa and Vasco serve tiffin and meals. Curd rice, sambar and rasam are not common on Goan menus, so we ask your resort in writing to include them and share a list of veg restaurants nearby.

We live near the beach in Chennai. Is Goa still worth it?

Yes, because the experience is different. Goa has clearer, calmer water in winter, long empty beaches in the south, Portuguese-era churches, the Fontainhas quarter, river islands and Konkani food. We build our plans around those things rather than crowded party beaches.

Is South Goa better than North Goa for Chennai families?

For most families, yes. South Goa beaches such as Varca, Cavelossim and Benaulim are quieter, resorts are larger, and Dabolim, where most Chennai flights land, is close by. North Goa suits couples and friends who want cafes, markets and nightlife. Two nights in each is a good compromise.

When is the cheapest time to visit Goa from Chennai?

June to September has the lowest resort prices, but the sea is closed and it rains heavily. For good weather at a fair price, aim for November to mid-December, before the half-yearly holidays, or late January to February after Pongal. Avoid the last ten days of December if budget matters.

Do you have an office in Chennai?

No. Our team is in Ahmedabad and plans Goa holidays for Chennai travellers on WhatsApp and phone. You get a written quote, day-wise itinerary, vouchers and invoice as PDFs, can pay by bank transfer or UPI, and can reach us at any hour during the trip.
