Malaysia Tour Packages from Chennai
Four hours from Meenambakkam to a country where Tamil is heard on the street, temple bells ring in Brickfields and banana-leaf meals are an everyday lunch – private Malaysia trips built around the right Chennai flight.
For a Chennai family, Malaysia often feels like the most familiar foreign country they will ever visit. About seven per cent of Malaysians are of Indian origin, most of them Tamil, so you hear Tamil in the taxi, see it on temple signboards and find idli and sambar at breakfast in Brickfields. Indian passport holders can currently enter without a visa, and Chennai has more non-stop flights to Malaysia than almost any other Indian city: Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and IndiGo all fly to Kuala Lumpur, and IndiGo also flies straight to Penang.
This page is written for travellers flying out of Chennai International Airport, from the city itself and from Kanchipuram, Vellore, Puducherry and the rest of north Tamil Nadu. It covers indicative package costs, which MAA departure suits which kind of trip, the visa-free rule and the MDAC arrival card as of November 2026, three itineraries, the Tamil temple trail from Batu Caves to Penang's hilltop Murugan temple, Tamil Nadu's 2027 holiday windows and food for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Your trip is planned by our team in Ahmedabad and booked on WhatsApp or phone; we have no Chennai office, and every voucher and ticket reaches you as a PDF.

Airfare from Chennai: as of November 2026, a return economy ticket to Kuala Lumpur usually costs about ₹14,000 – 26,000 per person on AirAsia or IndiGo once a checked bag is added, and about ₹22,000 – 34,000 on Malaysia Airlines with meals and baggage included, when booked five to seven weeks ahead. Pongal week, the April–May school holidays and Deepavali can push both towards ₹35,000 – 45,000. Penang fares on IndiGo sit in a similar band.
Paid on the spot: Petronas Skybridge or KL Tower (about MYR 60 – 100), Genting theme-park rides, Langkawi SkyCab, Penang Hill funicular (about MYR 30 for foreign adults), meals outside breakfast, Grab rides on free days and the tourism tax hotels collect from foreign guests (MYR 10 per room per night). One ringgit is roughly ₹19 – 21.
Which Chennai flight to pick (as of November 2026)
Malaysia is 2½ hours ahead of India and the non-stop takes about four hours, so the clock moves 6½ hours between take-off at MAA and landing at KLIA. The departure slot decides your first day more than anything else.
| Airline and typical slot | Lands (Malaysia time) | First day looks like | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malaysia Airlines, around 12.20 am | About 6.50 am | Breakfast, early check-in if we pre-book it, a slow afternoon | Couples who sleep on planes; full-service fare |
| AirAsia, around 8 am | About 2.30 pm | Hotel by 4 pm, Petronas Towers and KLCC fountain in the evening | Families with children and seniors – nobody loses a night's sleep |
| Malaysia Airlines, around 11.45 am | About 6.15 pm | Check-in and dinner only | Business travellers; a relaxed start |
| IndiGo, around 10.20 pm | About 4.45 am | A very early arrival; we book the room from the previous night | Lowest fares; young travellers |
| AirAsia, around 11.45 pm | About 6.20 am | As the midnight flight, with the low-cost fare rules | Budget trips with light bags |
| IndiGo to Penang, around 1 am | About 7 am | George Town walking day after breakfast | Heritage and food lovers starting in the north |
Airlines change slots every season, so read these as "about"; we check the operating timetable for your dates before quoting. AirAsia and IndiGo fares often exclude checked bags and meals, and we add them when booking so you are not charged at the KLIA counter.
Getting to MAA
- International flights leave from Terminal 2, the newer integrated terminal at Meenambakkam; check your ticket the evening before.
- For the morning AirAsia flight, the Metro to the airport station is quick from Guindy, Alandur or Anna Salai and avoids GST Road traffic. For midnight departures, a cab from Anna Nagar, Velachery or OMR takes 30 – 60 minutes.
- Families from Vellore, Kanchipuram or Puducherry usually drive in; allow three hours from Puducherry on the East Coast Road for an evening flight.
- In October to December, the northeast monsoon and cyclone warnings can delay flights out of Chennai. We avoid same-day onward flights inside Malaysia in those weeks.
Visa-free entry and the MDAC for Chennai travellers
As of November 2026, Indian passport holders can visit Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days. The Home Ministry's exemption runs to 31 December 2026, and we had not seen an announcement for 2027 when we updated this page. If your trip starts in January 2027 or later, we check the rule again before you pay and, if a visa is needed, we prepare and submit the eVISA application; approval is always at the Malaysian authority's discretion.
- MDAC: each traveller, babies included, files the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card on the Immigration Department's portal within three days before landing. One parent can file for the whole family. Sites that charge for it are not official.
- Passport: at least six months' validity on arrival. Chennai's Regional Passport Office and the Tatkal queue get busy before the April–May holidays, so renew early.
- Papers to print: the return ticket, hotel vouchers, the MDAC confirmation and a forex card or bank card. Officers decide entry at the counter even under the exemption.
- Staying with relatives: many Chennai visitors stay with family in Klang, Seremban or Petaling Jaya. Carry the host's address and phone number and write that address on the MDAC.
The full rules, including what changes if the exemption is not renewed, are in our Malaysia visa guide for Indians.

Each trip is private, with your own transfers and dates. Large Chennai families travelling for a wedding or a temple visit go as a private group on their own dates, in a van with one driver for the whole stay.
Tamil Malaysia: temples, Thaipusam and Deepavali
Most package pages treat Batu Caves as a photo stop. For many of our Chennai clients it is the reason for the trip, so we plan the temple days with care.
- Batu Caves: the 272 painted steps lead to the Temple Cave, with the giant golden statue of Lord Murugan at the foot. Go before 9 am. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed; sarongs can be hired. Monkeys snatch food and bags, so keep prasadam covered.
- Thaipusam: the festival falls on Friday 22 January 2027 and is a holiday in Tamil Nadu and Kuala Lumpur alike. Hundreds of thousands of devotees walk to Batu Caves with kavadi and paal kudam, roads close and hotels near the caves fill months ahead. If you want to take part or watch, we plan a pre-dawn arrival and a hotel within reach; if you want an easy sightseeing trip, avoid that week.
- Penang: Penang's own Thaipusam procession carries the silver chariot from Little India to the Waterfall Hill temple and feels closer to a Tamil Nadu temple festival than anything else abroad.
- Deepavali: a national public holiday in Malaysia, on Thursday 28 October 2027. Brickfields and Little India in Penang become huge bazaars in the two weeks before. Good for shopping; hotels in Brickfields need early booking.
- Language: Tamil helps with older shopkeepers and temple staff; English works everywhere else.
Tamil Nadu holidays and Malaysia weather, month by month
| Month | Malaysia weather | Chennai calendar | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | West coast drier; Langkawi good | Pongal 15 – 17 January and Thaipusam 22 January 2027: two long weekends a week apart | High in festival weeks |
| February | Dry west coast; Chinese New Year | Exam preparation for families; couples travel | High around Chinese New Year |
| March | Hot, mostly dry | Good Friday 26 March 2027 long weekend | Medium |
| April | Hot, afternoon storms begin | Tamil New Year on 14 April; schools close late in the month | Medium-high |
| May | Hot and humid; Genting cool | Main summer vacation and the hottest weeks in Chennai | High; book eight weeks out |
| June | Warm; occasional haze | Schools reopen early June | Medium |
| July – August | Warm with scattered showers | Quiet months for Chennai departures | Low-medium |
| September | Showers increase in Langkawi | Quarterly exam break late in the month | Low-medium |
| October | Wetter on the west coast | Ayudha Pooja and Vijayadasami 8 – 10 October; Deepavali 28 October 2027 | High in Deepavali week |
| November | Wettest weeks on the west coast | Northeast monsoon at home | Low |
| December | East coast islands closed by monsoon seas | Half-yearly school break; Christmas | Highest from about 20 December |
The two January long weekends are the best value for working couples in Chennai: one or two days of leave give a four- or five-day trip, and KL's weather is better than in the November rains. For May, put Genting or Penang Hill in the plan for cooler air, and keep Langkawi's boat trips for the morning.
Food for Chennai travellers: vegetarian, Chettinad and everything between
- South Indian vegetarian: the easiest food abroad for a Chennai family. Brickfields and Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur and Little India in George Town have pure-veg restaurants serving meals on banana leaf, dosa, idiyappam, pongal and filter-style coffee. A few chains familiar from Chennai have branches here too.
- Read the board: many Indian restaurants in Malaysia are Indian-Muslim "mamak" eateries – excellent roti canai and teh tarik, but not vegetarian kitchens. Look for the word "vegetarian" in the restaurant's name.
- Non-vegetarians: Penang's nasi kandar, banana-leaf meals with fish-head curry and mutton varuval, and Malay satay will feel close to Chettinad flavours. Halal food is the default in Malay restaurants.
- Genting and Langkawi: fewer Indian kitchens; we brief resorts in writing for vegetarian or Jain meals and note one or two Indian restaurants near each hotel.
- Breakfast: 4- and 5-star hotels in KL usually have an Indian corner; some 3-star breakfasts are thin, so we pick hotels within walking distance of a vegetarian restaurant.
- Heat and rain: the humidity feels like Chennai in May, but afternoon storms arrive fast. Carry a folding umbrella, light cottons, a jacket for Genting and covered clothes for temples and mosques.

How much does a Malaysia tour package from Chennai cost?
Our Malaysia packages currently start at ₹16,000 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Malaysia packages fall between ₹25,800 and ₹68,300 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.
Which airlines fly non-stop from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur?
As of November 2026, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and IndiGo fly non-stop from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, together around 30 flights a week, each taking about four hours. Malaysia Airlines includes meals and baggage; AirAsia and IndiGo sell them separately. Departure slots change by season, so we confirm the timetable for your dates before booking.
Is there a direct flight from Chennai to Penang?
Yes. IndiGo flies non-stop from Chennai to Penang once a day as of November 2026, leaving around 1 am and landing about 7 am Malaysia time after roughly 3½ hours. It makes an open-jaw trip easy: fly into Penang, take the train or a short flight south, and fly home from Kuala Lumpur.
Can people from Chennai visit Malaysia without a visa?
Indian passport holders can enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 30 days under an exemption that runs to 31 December 2026. Each traveller must file the free MDAC online within three days before arrival and carry a return ticket and hotel bookings. For trips from January 2027 we recheck the rule before booking.
Which flight from Chennai is best for families with children?
The morning AirAsia departure around 8 am usually suits families best. Nobody loses a night's sleep, you land in Kuala Lumpur in the early afternoon and can see the Petronas Towers the same evening. Midnight flights save a hotel night but leave children tired on the first day, so we pre-book early check-in when we use them.
Should we visit Batu Caves during Thaipusam?
Only if the festival itself is the reason for your trip. Thaipusam falls on 22 January 2027, crowds at Batu Caves run into the hundreds of thousands, roads close and nearby hotels sell out early. Devotees from Chennai who want to offer kavadi or paal kudam should book three to four months ahead; sightseeing families should choose another week.
Is South Indian vegetarian food easy to find in Malaysia?
Yes, more than in most countries. Brickfields and Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur and Little India in Penang have many pure-veg restaurants serving banana-leaf meals, dosa and idiyappam. Many other Indian restaurants are Indian-Muslim mamak eateries that also cook meat, so check the name. Genting and Langkawi have fewer options, which we plan for.
How many days are enough for Malaysia from Chennai?
Four nights cover Kuala Lumpur and Genting. Five nights let you start in Penang on the direct IndiGo flight and finish in Kuala Lumpur. Six nights fit a honeymoon with Langkawi, and seven or eight nights combine Malaysia with Singapore. Seniors are more comfortable with one extra night and no early starts.
When is the best time to go to Malaysia from Chennai?
December to April gives the driest weather on the west coast, and January has two Tamil Nadu long weekends, Pongal and Thaipusam. May suits families on summer vacation if Genting or Penang Hill is in the plan for cooler air. November is wet in both Chennai and Kuala Lumpur, but prices are lowest then.
Can we combine Malaysia and Singapore on one trip from Chennai?
Yes. Fly Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, travel to Singapore by a one-hour flight or a five-to-six-hour drive, and fly home from Singapore, which also has several non-stops to Chennai. Malaysia is visa-free at present, but Singapore needs a visa filed through an authorised agent; we prepare and submit it, and approval is Singapore's decision.
How much should a Chennai couple budget for a Malaysia trip?
For five nights in deluxe hotels, budget roughly ₹76,000 to ₹1,00,000 for two on the ground plus ₹28,000 to ₹52,000 for return flights, as of November 2026. Add MYR 150 to 250 a day for the couple for meals, Grab rides and small entry tickets. Penang and Kuala Lumpur are cheaper for food than Langkawi resorts.
Do you have an office in Chennai?
No. Our team is in Ahmedabad and plans Chennai trips remotely. You discuss the plan on WhatsApp or phone, receive the itinerary and quote as a PDF and pay against an invoice by bank transfer or UPI. Vouchers, flight tickets and driver details come before departure, and our support line works 24×7 while you travel.
