Good forFamilies, first snow trips, couples, senior pilgrims via Katra

Srinagar is roughly 2,400 km from Chennai, and as of October 2026 no airline flies the route non-stop. Every trip therefore starts with one decision: which connection. The fastest itineraries change planes at Hyderabad, Delhi or Bengaluru and reach Srinagar in about five and a half to seven hours; badly timed ones take ten or more. Pick well and you are on a Dal Lake houseboat by mid-afternoon. Pick badly and the first day is gone.

This page is written for families and couples, and for travellers from Kanchipuram, Vellore and Puducherry who fly out of Meenambakkam. It sets out what a private Kashmir trip costs, which connections work best and why, the Andaman Express run to Katra for families who want Vaishno Devi first, three itineraries, how Tamil Nadu's term breaks line up with the Kashmir seasons, and a straight answer on finding vegetarian Tamil food in the valley. Vibrant Holidays works from Ahmedabad; we have no Chennai office and plan these trips on WhatsApp and phone. Your car, driver, dates and hotels are your own; nothing is shared with strangers.

What a Kashmir trip from Chennai costs in 2026

Our site currently lists 24 Kashmir packages, the cheapest at ₹19,500 per person. Ground costs in the valley are the same wherever you start, so the ranges below match what we quote across India. They are per person with two sharing, and cover hotels and houseboat with breakfast and dinner, a private car with a Kashmiri driver for every transfer and sightseeing day, one shikara ride and taxes. Flights and trains are not included.

Airfare from Chennai: a return MAA–Srinagar ticket with one change usually works out at ₹20,000 to ₹34,000 per person when booked five or six weeks ahead. Over Pongal, the Christmas–New Year break and May, ₹38,000 or more is common. The cheapest fares tend to be on slow connections with long layovers, so we compare total journey time as well as price before recommending one.

Train fare: on the Andaman Express to Katra, a 3A berth is far cheaper than a flight, but you spend about two and a half days on board each way, so most families take the train one way only.

Extras you pay on the spot unless included: the Gulmarg gondola, Pahalgam's local union taxis, ponies at Sonamarg, snow boots and coats, lunches, and the Vaishno Devi helicopter or battery car. Approximate rates for each come with your quote.

Chennai to Srinagar: choosing the right connection

Flights from Chennai International (MAA)

All Kashmir flights leave from the domestic terminal at Meenambakkam. As of October 2026, schedules from IndiGo and Air India show only connecting itineraries to Srinagar; the shortest take about 5½ hours, many take 7 to 10. Here is how the main connection points compare.

ViaWhy use itWatch out for
HyderabadIndiGo flies Hyderabad–Srinagar non-stop daily, so a morning hop to Hyderabad makes one of the shortest routesOnly one onward flight a day, so a delay on the first leg hurts; we keep a buffer of at least two hours
DelhiThe most choice, with several Srinagar departures a day and easy rebookingMorning fog at Delhi from late December to January
BengaluruShort first leg; useful on days when Bengaluru–Srinagar non-stops operateNon-stop days from Bengaluru vary by season
Mumbai or AmritsarSometimes cheaper in peak weeksOften longer layovers
  • Timing that works: aim for a departure from MAA between 6 and 9 am. You land in Srinagar between 1 and 4 pm, with time for a shikara before dark.
  • Late arrivals: evening departures can land in Srinagar after midnight. We avoid them for families, because the drive to the houseboat jetty is cold and quiet at that hour.
  • Coming home: Srinagar airport screens bags at an outer gate and again inside, so we drop you about three hours before take-off. Most returns land back late in the evening.
  • Through ticket: book both legs on a single PNR. If the first flight is late, the airline must rebook you; on two separate tickets, the loss is yours.

By rail: the Andaman Express to Katra

LegTrainAbout
MGR Chennai Central to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi KatraAndaman Express (16031), three days a week, leaves around 5 am55 hours
Chennai Central to New DelhiTamil Nadu Express, Rajdhani and others28 – 33 hours
Katra to SrinagarVande Bharat via Reasi and Banihal, not on Tuesdays3 hours

The Andaman Express reaches Katra around midday on the third day, which suits pilgrims who want Vaishno Devi darshan before Kashmir. Since the Vande Bharat started running through to Srinagar, a family can now reach the valley entirely by train. Running days and timings have changed more than once this year, so we check IRCTC when you fix dates. Most people fly home rather than repeat the journey.

Three Kashmir itineraries from Chennai

6 nights / 7 days – family circuit via the Hyderabad connection

  • Day 1: Early flight from MAA, change at Hyderabad, non-stop to Srinagar; land in the afternoon. Houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake and a short shikara at sunset.
  • Day 2: Rest in the morning; Nishat and Shalimar gardens, then Shankaracharya temple for the view over the city.
  • Day 3: Sonamarg along the Sindh river; ponies to Thajiwas glacier if the children want snow in summer.
  • Day 4: Drive to Gulmarg, gondola in the afternoon when queues ease; night in Gulmarg.
  • Day 5: Across the valley to Pahalgam, stopping at the Pampore saffron fields and the Awantipora ruins.
  • Day 6: Betaab and Aru valleys by local taxi; an easy walk along the Lidder.
  • Day 7: Back to Srinagar airport for the connection home to Chennai.

8 nights / 9 days – Andaman Express to Katra, then Kashmir

  • Days 1–3: Board early on day 1; arrive Katra around midday on day 3 and rest.
  • Day 4: Vaishno Devi darshan. Seniors can use the helicopter to Sanjichhat, which we try to book as soon as the quota opens.
  • Day 5: Vande Bharat from Katra to Srinagar, about three hours over the Chenab and Anji bridges; houseboat for the night.
  • Day 6: Gulmarg day trip.
  • Days 7–8: Pahalgam overnight, with Betaab valley and Chandanwari.
  • Day 9: Fly home from Srinagar with one change.

7 nights / 8 days – half-yearly break snow trip (late December)

  • Day 1: Morning flight via Delhi or Hyderabad; heated hotel in Srinagar rather than a houseboat if you feel the cold.
  • Days 2–3: Two nights in Gulmarg: snow play, sledges, a beginner ski lesson for older children, and the gondola early on a clear morning.
  • Day 4: Back to Srinagar; walnut-wood and papier-mâché workshops in the old city.
  • Days 5–6: Pahalgam in winter, quiet and white along the river.
  • Day 7: Doodhpathri if the road is open, otherwise a free day.
  • Day 8: Fly home before schools reopen in the first week of January.

Each plan runs on your own dates with your own car and driver. Large families or friends travel as a private group, in a Tempo Traveller or two cars.

Tamil Nadu term breaks and the Kashmir seasons

For 2026–27, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department calendar has first-term exams in mid-September followed by a break to early October, second-term exams in mid-December followed by a break from 24 December to 3 January, and third-term exams ending in late April. CBSE and matriculation schools follow similar but not identical dates, so check your school circular.

  • Quarterly break (late September to early October): about nine days, enough for a five- or six-night trip. Kashmir is at its clearest then, with apple harvest in the orchards and nights around 8–10°C. It also lands just before the northeast monsoon reaches Chennai.
  • Half-yearly break (24 December to early January): the best school window for snow. Gulmarg usually has good cover by Christmas. Flights and Gulmarg hotels sell out by October, so book early, and allow for fog at the Delhi connection.
  • Pongal (mid-January): four days with Bhogi and Kaanum Pongal. Add three days of leave for a five-night snow trip; deep winter, with Srinagar nights well below zero.
  • Summer vacation (late April to early June): the longest window. Late April and early May are calmer and cheaper than the last two weeks of May, when North Indian holidays fill the valley. Srinagar days run 20–28°C while Chennai is close to 40°C.
  • Deepavali: early November is cold and quiet in Kashmir, with lower rates; good for couples.

Food, cold and practical tips for Chennai families

Eating vegetarian, Tamil style

Kashmir is a rice-eating region, which is the good news for a Tamil family: steamed rice is served at almost every meal, and most hotel kitchens will make plain dal, curd rice or a simple rasam if we tell them in advance. What you will not find outside a few Srinagar restaurants is idli, dosa, sambar with the right tamarind, or good filter coffee. Tea is the local drink, either sweet kahwa with saffron and almonds or salty pink noon chai. Carry a filter or good instant coffee, a small packet of rasam powder, podi, pickles, appalam and some ready-to-eat pongal or upma packs for early starts. Try the local vegetarian dishes: haak saag, nadru (lotus stem), dum aloo, chaman (paneer) and rajma with Kashmiri rice. Jain and no onion–garlic meals are arranged on request and written into your vouchers. Katra is entirely vegetarian, and food is simple but reliable there.

For Chettinad and seafood lovers

Non-vegetarians do well. Wazwan dishes such as rogan josh, rista and gushtaba are mutton-based, rich and milder in heat than Chettinad cooking, with fennel and dry ginger instead of black pepper. Fresh trout from the hill streams is served in Pahalgam and Srinagar. All meat is halal.

Practical points

  • The cold: Chennai rarely drops below 20°C, so even a May evening in Gulmarg feels cold. Pack a fleece and windproof jacket for summer; for December to February, thermals, a down jacket, gloves, woollen socks and waterproof shoes. Boots and long coats can be hired at Gulmarg.
  • Mobile phones: prepaid connections from Tamil Nadu do not work in Jammu and Kashmir; postpaid ones do. Carry at least one postpaid number.
  • Dry air: skin used to coastal humidity dries out quickly; carry lip balm and moisturiser.
  • Temples and shrines: Shankaracharya temple has many steps; Kheer Bhawani at Tulmulla is a calm half-day for devout families.
  • Payments: UPI works in Srinagar; keep cash for ponies and local taxis.
  • While you travel: we watch weather, road and advisory updates every day and change the route if needed, with 24x7 WhatsApp support.

Kashmir tour from Chennai: FAQs

How much does a Kashmir tour package from Chennai cost?

Our Kashmir packages currently start at ₹19,500 per person for 4 nights. Most of our Kashmir packages fall between ₹28,000 and ₹49,900 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Chennai to Srinagar?

Not as of October 2026. Every itinerary has at least one change, usually at Hyderabad, Delhi or Bengaluru. The quickest take about five and a half hours; many take seven to ten. We pick a connection that lands you in Srinagar by afternoon.

Which is the best connecting city for Srinagar from Chennai?

Hyderabad often gives the shortest journey because IndiGo flies non-stop from there to Srinagar daily. Delhi offers the most flights and easier rebooking, but winter fog can delay mornings. On days when Bengaluru has a non-stop to Srinagar, that works too. We compare all three for your dates.

What is the return airfare to Srinagar?

Usually ₹20,000 to ₹34,000 per person on a one-stop ticket booked five or six weeks ahead. During Pongal, the Christmas break and May it can go above ₹38,000. Fares change daily, so we quote flights separately from the land package and recheck them before you pay.

Can I go from Chennai to Kashmir by train?

Yes. The Andaman Express runs to Katra three days a week in about 55 hours. From Katra, the Vande Bharat reaches Srinagar in roughly three hours, except on Tuesdays. Most families take the train one way, combine it with Vaishno Devi, and fly home.

How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?

Six nights is a comfortable minimum, because the first and last days go largely on the connecting flights. That covers Srinagar, Sonamarg, a Gulmarg night and Pahalgam. Allow eight nights if you add Vaishno Devi, and nine or more if you travel one way by train.

Is the Tamil Nadu quarterly break a good time for Kashmir?

Yes. Late September and early October bring dry, sunny days of about 18 to 24°C, the apple harvest and thinner crowds than summer. The break is around nine days, which fits a five- or six-night trip. Nights are cool, so pack a warm jacket.

Will we see snow in Kashmir during the December holidays?

Usually, yes. Gulmarg normally has good snow by the last week of December, which matches the Tamil Nadu half-yearly break. Snowfall varies from year to year, and Pahalgam may only have patches. Book by October, as flights and Gulmarg hotels fill early.

Is South Indian vegetarian food available in Kashmir?

Only a little. A few Srinagar restaurants serve dosa and idli, but very little is available in Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Rice and dal are everywhere, and hotels prepare curd rice or rasam if briefed in advance. Carry coffee, podi, pickles and ready-to-eat packs from home.

Is Kashmir suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, with the right pace. We keep the first day light after the connection, choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms, and book the Vaishno Devi helicopter where possible. The Gulmarg gondola involves some walking and high altitude, so check with a doctor if there are heart or breathing concerns.

Will my Tamil Nadu prepaid SIM work in Kashmir?

No. Prepaid mobile connections from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work there. Postpaid connections from all major operators work normally. Make sure at least one person in your group carries a postpaid phone for calls with the driver and with us.

Do you have an office in Chennai?

No. Vibrant Holidays is based in Ahmedabad and plans these trips remotely. You deal with one planner on WhatsApp or phone, receive the itinerary, vouchers and invoice as PDFs, and have 24x7 support from us throughout your time in Kashmir.
