Chennai quietly gained a flight to Bali that many travellers in the city have not noticed. IndiGo's daily Mumbai–Denpasar service stops at Chennai on the way, and from Chennai the Bali leg is a single flight of about six hours with no change of aircraft. In the winter schedule that runs from late October 2026, it leaves Chennai International Airport at about 4:35 am and lands in Bali at around 1:10 pm local time. The return leaves Denpasar in the evening and reaches Chennai before midnight. For a city used to one-stop trips through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, that changes the arithmetic of a five-night holiday.

This page is for travellers from Chennai and nearby towns such as Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Vellore. It covers package costs without flights, how the pre-dawn departure and evening return shape the first and last days, the Singapore and Kuala Lumpur alternatives, the Tamil Nadu school calendar for 2026–27 including Pongal, a short guide to Bali's Hindu temples for families who visit temples at home, and South Indian vegetarian food on the island. Our team in Ahmedabad plans every holiday; there is no Chennai office, and you book with us on WhatsApp or phone. Every trip is private, with your own car and English-speaking driver.

How the IndiGo timings work for Chennai

  • The flight starts in Mumbai and makes its stop at Chennai; passengers from Chennai board here and stay on to Bali. It is a narrow-body aircraft with no free meal, so pre-book a vegetarian meal or carry a snack.
  • Getting to the airport: for a 4:35 am departure, reach the terminal by about 1:30 am. From Anna Nagar or Mylapore that means leaving home around midnight; from OMR or ECR, a little earlier. Many families sleep for a few hours in the evening first.
  • Seasonal shift: in the summer schedule of 2026 (late March to late October) the same flight left Chennai around 7 am and landed about 4:10 pm, and the return reached Chennai about 9:40 pm. Expect a similar change from late March 2027; we confirm at booking.
  • Bali is 2½ hours ahead of Chennai, so a 1:10 pm landing is 10:40 am by your body clock. After immigration you reach your hotel by mid-afternoon.
  • The evening return is the real gain. With a 6:50 pm departure, the last day is almost a full day of sightseeing, which most other Indian cities do not get.
  • When to choose a one-stop instead: if you want two nights in Singapore (visa needed in advance; see our Singapore visa guide) or Kuala Lumpur (visa-free for Indians until 31 December 2026; see the Malaysia visa guide), or if the IndiGo fare jumps on your dates.

Visa, levy and arrival card (as of November 2026)

An Indian passport holder needs three separate things for Bali, and each has its own website:

  1. e-VOA or visa on arrival – IDR 500,000, valid 30 days, extendable once by another 30. We prepare and submit the e-VOA for each traveller; the decision belongs to Indonesian immigration.
  2. Bali tourist levy – IDR 150,000 per person, paid online through the Love Bali portal or at the airport.
  3. All Indonesia arrival card – a free digital customs and health declaration, filled in within three days before arrival.

Passports need six months' validity and a blank page. Children need their own passport, visa and levy. A step-by-step version with screenshots of what to expect is on our Bali visa guide for Indians. We recheck all three before you travel, as Indonesia has changed procedures several times since 2024.

Three day-wise Bali plans for Chennai travellers

Each plan assumes the IndiGo flight: an afternoon arrival on day one and an evening departure on the last day.

5 nights – family with grandparents (Ubud and Kuta)

  • Day 1: Land around 1 pm. Ninety minutes to Ubud through the woodcarving villages. Early dinner and rest.
  • Day 2: Tirta Empul spring temple, Gunung Kawi rock-cut shrines (many steps; elders can wait at the top café), Tegalalang terraces.
  • Day 3: Ubud palace, Saraswati temple with its lotus pond, the market, and a vegetarian cooking class in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: Via Tanah Lot sea temple to Kuta; sunset on the rocks.
  • Day 5: Uluwatu temple and the Kecak dance retelling the Ramayana; dinner at Jimbaran.
  • Day 6: Garuda Wisnu Kencana park in the morning, lunch, shopping, and the 6:50 pm flight home.

6 nights – temples and east Bali

  • Day 1: Arrive and stay in Sanur, 25 minutes away; walk the flat beach path.
  • Day 2: Besakih, the mother temple on the slopes of Mount Agung, with a local guide; overnight in the Sidemen rice valley.
  • Day 3: Tirta Gangga water palace and the Lempuyang gate early in the morning, to Ubud by evening.
  • Days 4–5: Ubud temples and terraces at an easy pace, a Balinese offering-making session with a village family.
  • Day 6: Nusa Dua resort day.
  • Day 7: Beach morning and the evening flight.

6 nights – honeymoon (Ubud, Nusa Penida, Uluwatu)

  • Day 1: To an Ubud jungle villa; floating breakfast booked for the next morning.
  • Days 2–3: Swing, terraces, couple spa, Campuhan ridge walk at sunrise.
  • Day 4: Fast boat from Sanur and a night on Nusa Penida for Kelingking beach without the day-trip crowd.
  • Days 5–6: Uluwatu cliff villa, beach clubs, the Kecak dance.
  • Day 7: Late check-out, then the airport, 30 minutes away.

All plans are private and customised. Joint families and friends travel as a private group on their own dates, usually in a minivan, with a shared villa that has a kitchen.

Bali's Hindu temples: what Chennai families will recognise

Bali is the one place in South-East Asia where Hinduism is the living majority religion, and visitors from Tamil Nadu notice the parallels within a day. Some customs are familiar; others are quite different.

  • Holy water: the Balinese word for it is tirta, close to our theertham. At Tirta Empul you can join the purification bath in the spring pools; a sarong is required and the temple lends one.
  • Daily offerings: small palm-leaf trays called canang sari, with flowers, rice and incense, are placed at doorways and shrines every morning, much like a kolam and lamp at the threshold at home.
  • Epics everywhere: the Kecak and Legong dances tell Ramayana stories, and Garuda Wisnu Kencana has a giant statue of Vishnu riding Garuda.
  • What is different: Balinese temples (pura) are open-air courtyards with tiered meru towers and an empty stone throne for the supreme god, rather than a sanctum with an idol. Most inner courtyards are for worshippers only; visitors stay in the outer areas.
  • Temple rules: sarong and waist sash for everyone, shoulders covered. By Balinese custom, women who are menstruating are asked not to enter temple grounds.
  • Festivals: Galungan, when bamboo penjor poles line every village street, falls on 13 January 2027 and ends with Kuningan on 23 January. It overlaps Pongal week, which makes a January trip from Chennai especially colourful.

Tamil Nadu school holidays and Bali seasons (2026–27)

The state board calendar for 2026–27 sets the main windows below; CBSE and matriculation schools in Chennai usually follow close but not identical dates.

One honest note: Chennai's north-east monsoon (October to December) overlaps the start of Bali's wet season. A December trip does not escape the rain, although Bali's showers are usually shorter and come mostly in the afternoon. If dry weather matters most, choose April to October.

South Indian vegetarian food and practical tips

  • Rice is the base of every Balinese meal, so a plate of steamed rice with vegetable curry, tempeh and sambal is never hard to find. Ask for no terasi (shrimp paste) and no fish sauce.
  • Sweets that feel familiar: klepon, rice-flour balls filled with palm jaggery and rolled in coconut, taste close to kozhukattai; black-rice pudding with coconut milk is a cousin of payasam.
  • Indian restaurants: Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Ubud have several; a few make dosa, idli, sambar and South Indian meals, most cook North Indian dishes. Filter coffee is rare, but Balinese coffee is strong and good.
  • Curd rice: plain yoghurt is sold at supermarkets in Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud, and villas will cook plain rice on request, so curd rice at the villa is easy.
  • Jain and no-onion-garlic: possible at Indian restaurants and through a villa cook briefed in writing; limited at local warungs.
  • Clothing: cotton for the day, a veshti or long skirt can be worn in place of a hired sarong at temples, with the sash, and a light rain jacket from November to March.
  • Money and SIM: roughly 185–195 rupiah to the rupee; use bank ATMs. A Telkomsel tourist SIM or an eSIM bought in Chennai works across the island.
  • Health: bottled water only, mosquito repellent at dusk, and travel insurance for everyone, especially elders.

Bali tour from Chennai: FAQs

How much does a Bali tour package from Chennai cost?

Our Bali packages currently start at ₹10,999 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Bali packages fall between ₹26,999 and ₹55,000 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

Is there a direct flight from Chennai to Bali?

Yes, in practice. As of November 2026 IndiGo's daily Mumbai–Denpasar flight stops at Chennai, and from Chennai it flies straight to Bali in about six hours on the same aircraft. In the current winter schedule it leaves around 4:35 am and lands about 1:10 pm Bali time. Timings change in late March, so we confirm them for your dates.

What time does the Bali flight return to Chennai?

In the winter schedule from late October 2026, the return leaves Denpasar at about 6:50 pm and lands in Chennai around 10:20 pm. That lets you sightsee on the last day before going to the airport. In the 2026 summer schedule it left Bali earlier, about 5:45 pm.

How much is a Chennai to Bali return ticket?

As of November 2026, economy returns usually cost about ₹24,000 to 40,000 per person when booked six to eight weeks ahead, on the IndiGo flight or a one-stop through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. During Pongal, the Christmas break and early summer vacation, expect roughly ₹38,000 to 58,000. We quote live fares.

Should we fly via Singapore instead of the IndiGo flight?

Only if you want a Singapore stopover, prefer a full-service airline with meals and bags, or the IndiGo fare is high on your dates. Otherwise the single flight is quicker and avoids a connection. A Singapore stopover needs a visa arranged before travel; an airside connection without leaving the airport usually does not.

What do Indians need to enter Bali?

As of November 2026: an e-VOA or visa on arrival for IDR 500,000, valid 30 days and extendable once; the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000; and the free All Indonesia arrival card filled within three days before landing. Passports need six months' validity. We prepare and submit the e-VOA, but approval is up to Indonesian immigration.

Is Bali a good choice for the Pongal holidays?

Yes, if you accept some rain. Mid-January is Bali's wet season, with heavy afternoon showers, so we plan temples and terraces in the mornings. In 2027 Galungan falls on 13 January and Kuningan on 23 January, so villages are decorated during Pongal week. Flights fill fast, so book by October or November.

Can we visit Hindu temples in Bali as worshippers?

You can visit and, at places like Tirta Empul, join the purification bath in the spring pools. Most inner temple courtyards are reserved for Balinese worshippers, and visitors stay in the outer areas. Everyone wears a sarong and sash, and by local custom menstruating women are asked not to enter temple grounds.

Will we get South Indian vegetarian food in Bali?

Some. A few Indian restaurants in Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud serve dosa, idli and meals, while most cook North Indian food. Balinese vegetable dishes with rice, tempeh and tofu are easy if you ask for no shrimp paste. Yoghurt is sold in supermarkets, so curd rice at a villa is simple.

How early should we reach Chennai airport for the 4:35 am flight?

Plan to be at the international terminal by about 1:30 am, three hours before departure. From central Chennai that usually means leaving home around midnight; allow extra time from OMR, ECR or Ambattur. A short sleep in the evening before leaving makes the first afternoon in Bali much easier.

Is Bali suitable for grandparents from Chennai?

Yes, with sensible pacing. The six-hour flight is manageable, and we keep drives under two hours, use hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms, and skip steep sites such as the Lempuyang steps. Temples like Tirta Empul, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu have viewing areas that need only a short walk.

How do we book with you from Chennai?

On WhatsApp or phone with our Ahmedabad team; we have no Chennai office. You get a day-wise plan with hotel names and a complete quote, pay online, and receive tickets, the e-VOA, vouchers and the invoice as PDFs. Our Bali ground partner and a 24x7 WhatsApp line support you during the trip.
