No big Indian city is closer to Sri Lanka than Chennai. The flight to Colombo takes about an hour and twenty minutes, less time than the drive from Tambaram to Anna Nagar on a bad evening, and as of November 2026 there are around seven non-stops a day between IndiGo and SriLankan Airlines. The city also has something no other Indian city has: a daily flight to Jaffna, the Tamil-speaking capital of the north, where the signboards, the temple music and much of the food will feel familiar. That makes Sri Lanka two different holidays for Tamil Nadu travellers. One is the classic island loop of Kandy, tea country and the south coast. The other is a Tamil heritage trip through Jaffna, Nainativu, Trincomalee and the five ancient Shiva temples known as the Pancha Ishwarams.

This page is written for travellers from Chennai, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Puducherry and the rest of north Tamil Nadu. It covers what a package costs, the Colombo and Jaffna flights and the Nagapattinam ferry as of November 2026, three itineraries built around MAA departure times, how the two monsoons line up with Tamil Nadu school holidays and Pongal, the free ETA, and where South Indian vegetarian food is easy and where it is not. Every trip is private and planned by our team in Ahmedabad, booked on WhatsApp or phone; we have no Chennai office.

Airfare from Chennai: with so many flights, a MAA–Colombo economy return usually costs about ₹14,000 – 26,000 per person when booked four to six weeks ahead, as of November 2026; IndiGo is generally cheaper, SriLankan includes a full checked bag. The Jaffna flight is a small ATR aircraft with a lower baggage allowance and fares of roughly ₹12,000 – 24,000 return. The half-yearly holidays, Pongal week and Deepavali push fares up by ₹5,000 – 10,000.

Extra on the ground: Sigiriya entry (about USD 35 for foreigners, less for SAARC passports), the Temple of the Tooth, Yala park and jeep fees, the boat to Nainativu, train tickets, meals other than breakfast and the chauffeur-guide's tip. One Indian rupee buys about 3.4 – 3.6 Sri Lankan rupees at present.

Which Colombo departure to choose

  • Late-morning flights (SriLankan around 9.50 am, IndiGo around 10 am) land before noon, which leaves time to drive to Kandy, about 3½ hours, the same day. This is our default for families.
  • Mid-afternoon flights suit a first night near the airport at Negombo, then an early start inland.
  • The 12.40 am IndiGo flight lands at about 2 am. It is cheap, but we avoid it for children and seniors unless a hotel room is booked from the night before.
  • Same clock: Sri Lanka keeps Indian Standard Time, so pick-up times need no conversion.

The Jaffna flight and the ferry, honestly

The daily flight leaves Chennai around 10.25 am and lands at Jaffna International Airport at Palaly about 11.45 am, so a north-only trip starts with an afternoon at Nallur. Baggage on the ATR is tighter than on Colombo flights; we add extra kilos at booking. The ferry has run in the calmer months since 2023 and has been paused for weather in the north-east monsoon; it stopped in November 2025 and was reported to resume on 6 March 2026. For any date we check whether it is sailing before we plan around it, and we always keep a flight as the fallback.

Whichever way you enter, the ETA is the same: it is needed for Jaffna, Colombo and the ferry port alike.

Sri Lanka ETA for Chennai travellers (as of November 2026)

Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration has issued the tourist ETA free of charge to Indian passport holders since 25 May 2026. The ETA must still be obtained before arrival. It allows 30 days from first entry and a second entry inside that period. The official notice gives no end date for the scheme, which is why we recheck it before every booking.

  • We prepare and submit the ETA for each traveller, infants included, on the official portal only. Approval is the decision of Sri Lanka immigration, not ours.
  • Names must match the passport exactly. Many Tamil passports carry an initial or a single name, which is the most common reason for a correction; send us a clear passport copy and we fill it as printed.
  • Apply at least a week before travel. The approval email is checked by the airline at check-in and by immigration on arrival.

Step-by-step screens, fake-site warnings, extensions and customs limits are in our Sri Lanka visa guide for Indians.

6 nights / 7 days – the Pancha Ishwaram temples

  • Day 6: Down the coast to Dondra for the Tondeswaram site at the southern tip; overnight at Mirissa or Galle.

The pilgrimage has three long road days; for parents over 70 we add a night at Trincomalee. Every trip is private: your own car and chauffeur-guide, your own dates. Families from the same street or temple committee can travel as a private group with a van.

Two monsoons and the Tamil Nadu school calendar

Sri Lanka has two rainy seasons, and the one that matters depends on where you go. The south-west monsoon wets Colombo, Galle and the hills from about May to September. The north-east monsoon, the same one that floods Chennai streets, brings rain to Jaffna, Trincomalee and the east coast from about October to January. So Tamil Nadu's December holidays are good for the south and west but wet in the north, and the summer holidays are the right time for Jaffna.

September – OctoberInter-monsoon showersQuarterly holidays; Navaratri and Deepavali (29 October 2027)Good value except Deepavali

The Nallur festival runs about 25 days and draws the Tamil diaspora from around the world, so Jaffna rooms sell out; book three months ahead. Matriculation, CBSE and international schools publish their own calendars, which often differ from the state-board dates above.

South Indian vegetarian food and tips for Chennai travellers

  • Jaffna: the food is Tamil but not the same as Mylapore's. Idiyappam, pittu, thosai and vadai are everywhere, and "saiva" restaurants near the temples are fully vegetarian. Non-vegetarian Jaffna cooking is famous for crab and mutton curries with a roasted curry powder that is hotter than most Chennai kitchens.
  • Colombo: Wellawatte and Bambalapitiya, the Tamil neighbourhoods, have South Indian vegetarian restaurants serving meals, dosa and filter-style coffee.
  • Hills and south coast: rice and curry is the default; vegetable curries are good, but some use dried Maldive fish. Say "no fish, no egg" clearly; our vouchers carry the instruction to hotels.
  • Coffee: Sri Lanka is a tea country. Outside Tamil areas, good filter coffee is rare; many Tamil Nadu travellers carry a small pack of powder.
  • Temple dress: veshti or trousers and a shirt for men, saree, salwar or long skirts for women. At Nallur men go bare-chested; at Buddhist temples wear white or light colours and never turn your back to a Buddha image for a photo.
  • Language: Tamil works in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Colombo's Tamil areas and the tea estates; English elsewhere. Our Tamil-speaking chauffeur-guides make the north far easier for grandparents.
  • Money: Indian rupees are not accepted. Draw Sri Lankan rupees at the airport ATM or carry a forex card and a few US dollars.

Sri Lanka tour from Chennai: FAQs

How much does a Sri Lanka tour package from Chennai cost?

Our Sri Lanka packages currently start at ₹13,999 per person for 2 nights. Most of our Sri Lanka packages fall between ₹26,900 and ₹50,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.

How long is the flight from Chennai to Colombo?

About 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes. As of November 2026 IndiGo and SriLankan Airlines together operate around seven non-stops a day from MAA, from a 12.40 am departure to late evening. Late-morning flights land before noon and let you reach Kandy the same day. Schedules change by season, so we confirm the flight on your dates.

Is there a direct flight from Chennai to Jaffna?

Yes. As of November 2026 IndiGo flies Chennai to Jaffna once a day on an ATR 72, leaving around 10.25 am and landing at about 11.45 am. Alliance Air flew the route earlier but is not listed now. The aircraft is small, so baggage allowances are lower than on Colombo flights; we add extra kilos when booking.

Is the Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka ferry running?

The Sivagangai ferry from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai near Jaffna takes about four hours. It has been paused for weather in the north-east monsoon; it stopped in November 2025 and was reported to resume in March 2026. Its status changes, so we check before planning around it and keep a flight as backup.

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka from Chennai?

Indians need a tourist ETA, which has been free since 25 May 2026, as of November 2026. It must be approved before you travel and allows 30 days with a second entry. It is required whether you land in Colombo, Jaffna or arrive by ferry. We prepare and submit it; approval is with Sri Lanka immigration.

What is the cheapest time to fly Chennai to Colombo?

Outside school holidays and festival weeks, a return usually costs about ₹14,000 to ₹26,000 when booked four to six weeks ahead. The 12.40 am IndiGo departure is often the lowest fare. Prices rise in the December half-yearly holidays, Pongal week, Deepavali and the April–May vacation.

Is Jaffna good to visit in December?

December is in the north-east monsoon, so Jaffna and the east coast get regular rain and the sea to Nainativu can be rough. For the December school holidays, Kandy, the hills and the south coast are a better choice. Visit Jaffna between February and September; July and August add the Nallur festival.

What are the Pancha Ishwaram temples?

They are five ancient Shiva temples on Sri Lanka's coasts: Naguleswaram at Keerimalai, Thiruketheeswaram at Mannar, Koneswaram at Trincomalee, Munneswaram near Chilaw and Tondeswaram at Dondra. Tamil Shaivite devotees often cover all five in six or seven nights, entering at Jaffna and leaving from Colombo.

Is South Indian vegetarian food easy to find in Sri Lanka?

Very easy in Jaffna, where saiva restaurants near the temples are fully vegetarian, and in Colombo's Tamil areas of Wellawatte and Bambalapitiya. In the hills and on the south coast, hotel kitchens handle it, but some curries use dried Maldive fish, so ask for no fish or egg. We note it on every voucher.

Can we drive from Jaffna to Kandy on the same trip?

Yes. Jaffna to Kandy is about 300 km, roughly six to seven hours with stops, so we usually break it at Anuradhapura or Dambulla. A seven-night trip can fly into Jaffna and fly home from Colombo, covering the north, the cultural triangle and the hills without backtracking.

Is Tamil spoken in Sri Lanka?

Tamil is one of Sri Lanka's two official languages. It is the main language in Jaffna, much of the east, Colombo's Tamil neighbourhoods and the tea estates. Elsewhere Sinhala and English are used. We can arrange a Tamil-speaking chauffeur-guide, which senior travellers from Chennai find especially helpful.

Do you have an office in Chennai?

No. Our team works from C G Road in Ahmedabad and plans Chennai trips on WhatsApp, phone or video call, Monday to Saturday. You get a written itinerary with hotel names and prices, send passport copies for the ETA on WhatsApp, pay online against an invoice and receive tickets and vouchers as PDFs.
