Manali Tour Packages from Chennai
From 30°C at Meenambakkam to snow at Solang and Sissu – a first-snow holiday planned around the long journey north, the cold, and curd rice when you want it.
For many families in Chennai, Manali is the trip where the children touch snow for the first time. It is also one of the longest domestic journeys you can take from Tamil Nadu: about 2,500 km as the crow flies, with no non-stop flight to the nearest big airport and a long mountain road at the end. Done well, the travel days become part of the holiday. Done badly, the family spends two of its six nights on buses and arrives too tired and too cold to enjoy Solang.
This page is written for travellers from Tamil Nadu. It compares the realistic routes – via Delhi, via Chandigarh, or flying to Kullu – with travel times door to door, gives indicative package costs, three day-wise plans that respect the journey, and the practical side of going from coastal heat to sub-zero nights: what to buy at home, what to rent in Manali, how to acclimatise, and where to find idli, dosa and rasam in the Himalaya. Every trip is private and customised, with your own cab and driver. Planning is done by our team in Ahmedabad over WhatsApp and phone; we have no Chennai office.

Manali package cost for Chennai travellers (indicative, 2026)
Our Himachal and Manali packages currently start at ₹12,000 per person, with 24 live on the site. The bands below are indicative per person on twin sharing, excluding flights and trains. They include hotels with breakfast and dinner, a private cab from the pick-up point (Delhi, Chandigarh or Kullu airport) for the whole trip, sightseeing as per plan, driver allowances, tolls, parking and Himachal entry tax.
| Plan | Standard (3★) | Deluxe (4★) | Premium (5★ / luxury cottage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 nights – Manali 4 + Chandigarh 1, private cab from Chandigarh | ₹16,500 – 22,000 | ₹24,000 – 31,500 | ₹39,000 – 58,000 |
| 6 nights – Delhi pick-up, Mandi or Kullu stop, Manali 4, back to Delhi | ₹21,000 – 27,500 | ₹29,500 – 38,500 | ₹46,000 – 70,000 |
| 6 nights – budget: overnight Volvo both ways from Delhi, Manali 4 | ₹13,500 – 18,000 | ₹19,500 – 26,000 | Not usually chosen |
| 7 nights – Shimla 2, Manali 4, Chandigarh 1 | ₹24,500 – 32,000 | ₹34,000 – 45,000 | ₹55,000 – 84,000 |
Airfare: a Chennai–Delhi return flight usually costs about ₹9,000 – 16,000 per person when booked four to six weeks ahead. Chennai–Chandigarh is a one-stop journey as of October 2026 and typically runs ₹14,000 – 24,000 return. Adding a Delhi–Kullu sector costs roughly ₹9,000 – 20,000 return because the aircraft is small and seats are few. The late-December holidays, Pongal week and the April–May vacation can push fares up by half or more, so these three windows need booking well ahead.
Paid locally unless included: snow jacket, trousers and boot sets on rent (about ₹300 – 600 a set per day), Solang ropeway, snow scooter, skiing lessons and paragliding, the Rohtang permit with a local vehicle when the pass is open, river rafting near Kullu (April to June), lunches and tips. The quote lists each one with an estimate.
Getting to Manali from Chennai: the routes compared door to door
Flight and train details below are as of October 2026 and change with each season; we confirm current timings when we quote.
| Route | Approximate time | What it is like |
|---|---|---|
| MAA – Delhi non-stop (many flights a day, about 2¾–3 h), then private cab about 530 km via Chandigarh and Mandi | About 3 h flight + 12–14 h road; best split with a night on the way | Most flexible and most flight choice. With a morning flight you can reach Chandigarh or Mandi the same evening and Manali next afternoon. |
| MAA – Chandigarh (IXC), one-stop via Delhi, Bengaluru or Hyderabad, then about 300 km by cab | 5–6 h flying + 8–9 h road | Shortest road leg. No regular non-stop as we write, so compare total time with the Delhi route. |
| MAA – Delhi, then Delhi – Kullu (KUU) on a small regional aircraft; Bhuntar is about 50 km from Manali | Can be done in a day when it works | Few flights a week, strict baggage limits and frequent weather cancellations in winter. Use it for the return leg, not the outbound. |
| MAA – Delhi, then overnight Volvo coach to Manali | 3 h flight + 12–14 h coach | Cheapest; suits college groups. Not advisable for small children or older parents in winter. |
| Train Chennai Central – New Delhi (Tamil Nadu Express or Grand Trunk Express), then by road | About 33–36 h + road | Comfortable for senior citizens who dislike flying; adds two days each way. |
How we usually route Tamil Nadu families
- Outbound: an early-morning flight to Delhi, our cab waiting at the airport, and a night in Chandigarh, Mandi or Kullu depending on how far the family wants to ride. This turns one punishing 14-hour drive into a 6-hour and a 5-hour day.
- Return: Manali to Kullu airport and a flight to Delhi if seats and weather allow, with a road fallback already planned, then an evening flight south. Or the cab back to Chandigarh for a one-stop flight home.
- Leave a buffer day in Delhi or Chandigarh before the flight home in January and February. Snow on the highway near Mandi and fog at Delhi airport both cause delays.
Three Manali itineraries built around the long journey south to north
Family first-snow trip: 6 nights via Delhi (December to February)
- Day 1: Morning flight to Delhi; drive to Chandigarh (about 5 hours) and check in. Sukhna Lake in the evening if energy allows.
- Day 2: Chandigarh to Manali (8–9 hours) along the Beas, with a tea stop at Mandi and the Pandoh dam viewpoint. Early dinner, heater on.
- Day 3: Rest morning to acclimatise; Hadimba Devi Temple, the cedar forest at Van Vihar and Mall Road. Rent snow gear in the evening for the next day.
- Day 4: Solang Valley – snow play, ropeway, a short snow-scooter or skiing lesson for the children.
- Day 5: Through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul for the frozen waterfall and white valley views, road conditions permitting. Spare activity day if the road is shut.
- Day 6: Kullu shawl outlets and Naggar Castle; drive to Bhuntar or start the descent towards Chandigarh.
- Day 7: Flight Kullu–Delhi or drive to Chandigarh; connect to the flight home.

- Day 8: Flight home from Chandigarh.
Pongal, December holidays and summer: timing a Manali trip from Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu's school year gives three clear windows for a Manali holiday. The dates below follow the Tamil Nadu School Education Department calendar for 2026–27; CBSE, ICSE and matriculation schools often differ by a few days.
| Window | Dates | What Manali is like |
|---|---|---|
| Quarterly holidays | 26 September – 4 October 2026 | Clear skies, autumn colours, no snow in town; Rohtang usually open with permit. Quiet and good value. |
| Half-yearly / Christmas holidays | 24 December 2026 – 3 January 2027 | The best chance of snow in Solang, and the busiest, costliest week of the year. Book by early November. |
| Pongal | Mid-January (Bhogi to Kaanum Pongal), a long weekend with a little leave | Deep winter; snow likely at Solang and Sissu, sometimes in town. Very cold nights, around −5°C. |
| Summer vacation | After annual exams end around 23 April 2027, to early June | 15–25°C days; snow only at Rohtang and around Sissu. The classic escape from Agni Nakshatram heat. |
The monsoon angle: Chennai's northeast monsoon runs from October to December, and late-year cyclones can disrupt flights out of Meenambakkam. If you are flying in November or December, keep travel insurance and avoid the tightest connections. Conversely, Manali's own rainy season is July to mid-September, when landslides close roads; that is the one window we advise Chennai families to avoid.
Month by month: Manali for South Indian travellers
| Month | Manali weather | Notes for Tamil Nadu families | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | −5 to 8°C, snow likely | Pongal trip; pack properly; buffer day for road closures | High in the first week, then medium |
| February | −3 to 10°C, snow possible | Fewer crowds, good snow at Solang | Medium |
| March | Snow melting, 3–15°C | Board exams keep families home; couples travel | Low-medium |
| April | 8–20°C, blossom season | Summer vacation starts late in the month | Medium |
| May | 12–25°C | Peak escape from the plains heat; Rohtang often reopens | High |
| June | 14–27°C | Busy until schools reopen; rafting season | High |
| July – August | Monsoon, landslide risk | Avoid for families | Lowest |
| September | Rain easing late in the month | Quarterly break at the end of the month | Low |
| October | Crisp, clear, 5–20°C | Best weather while the northeast monsoon begins back home | Medium |
| November | Cold, dry; first light snow higher up | Good value; Rohtang usually closes this month | Low-medium |
| December | Below zero at night; snow from mid or late month | Half-yearly holidays; most popular week | Highest after 20 December |
Rohtang, Atal Tunnel and Solang: rules and realities (as of October 2026)
- Rohtang Pass (3,978 m) is normally open from around May or June to November and shut in winter. Each vehicle needs an online permit: the Himachal government portal lists a ₹500 permit fee plus a ₹50 congestion charge for cars, a daily cap of 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles, applications up to two days ahead, and only vehicles up to 10 years old. Tourist cabs from outside are usually not used; we book a local Manali taxi with the permit.
- Atal Tunnel (about 9 km) is open through the year and takes you to Sissu in Lahaul without crossing Rohtang. After heavy snowfall the approach road is closed for a day or two, which is why our winter plans keep a spare day.
- Solang Valley is 14 km from Manali and the main snow point from December to February: ropeway, snow scooters, skiing lessons and tubing. In summer it is paragliding and zorbing.
- Traffic: in the peak weeks the road to Solang and the tunnel jams by mid-morning. We start at 7.30 – 8 am; the earlier, the better the snow and the shorter the queue.
First snow, cold and food: practical notes for coastal travellers
Dressing for cold you have never felt
Most coastal Tamil Nadu homes have no real winter clothing, and buying a full set for one trip is wasteful. Our advice to clients:
- Buy at home: two sets of thermal innerwear per person, woollen socks, a cap that covers the ears, gloves, and a fleece or sweater. These are inexpensive in T. Nagar and at sports stores, and you will wear them every day.
- Rent in Manali: the heavy outer layer – padded jackets, waterproof snow trousers and gumboots – from shops on Mall Road or at Solang. Rental costs a few hundred rupees a set and saves suitcase space.
- Feet and hands go first: cotton socks get wet in snow and stay wet. Waterproof boots or gumboots plus woollen socks make the difference between a happy day and a crying child.
- Lips, skin and eyes: cold dry air and snow glare burn. Pack lip balm, moisturiser, sunscreen and sunglasses.
Acclimatising from sea level
- Manali is at about 2,050 m, Sissu around 3,100 m and Rohtang close to 4,000 m. You are coming from sea level, so take the first day easy, drink water even when you do not feel thirsty, and avoid hurrying up slopes.
- Headache, breathlessness or nausea at Sissu or Rohtang means come down; tell the driver. Anyone with heart or lung conditions, and pregnant women, should consult a doctor before the trip.
- Hotel rooms in winter need heating. All our Manali hotels have room heaters; ask for an extra blanket at check-in rather than at midnight.
Idli, dosa and rasam in the hills
- Manali has a few restaurants on and near Mall Road that serve South Indian breakfast – dosa, idli, uttapam, vada. Quality varies and coconut chutney is not always as you know it.
- Hotels cooperate: with a day's notice most of our hotels will make curd rice, plain rice with sambar or rasam, and lemon rice. We write the request on the voucher.
- Carry a small kit: podi, pickle, ready-to-eat sambar rice packets and instant filter-coffee decoction cover the gaps on long drive days.
- North Indian vegetarian food – dal, rajma, parathas, paneer – is everywhere, and Himachali siddu and trout are worth trying. Pure-veg and Jain meals are arranged on request.
- Delhi and Chandigarh, where you break the journey, have good South Indian restaurants, so the first and last nights are easy.

How much does a Manali tour package from Chennai cost?
Our Manali packages currently start at ₹12,000 per person for 3 nights. Most of our Manali packages fall between ₹21,999 and ₹42,999 per person. The final cost depends on the travel month, hotel category, number of travellers and whether flights from Chennai are added. Open any package below to see exactly what is included, or ask us for a quote with flights.
Is there a direct flight from Chennai to Manali?
No. Manali's nearest airport is Kullu-Bhuntar, about 50 km away, served only by small regional flights from Delhi a few days a week. From Chennai you fly non-stop to Delhi in about three hours, or one-stop to Chandigarh, and continue by road.
Is there a non-stop flight from Chennai to Chandigarh?
Not as of October 2026; flights we checked connect via Delhi, Bengaluru or Hyderabad and take five to six hours. Because the road from Chandigarh is shorter, the total journey can still beat the Delhi route. We compare both on your dates.
How long does it take to reach Manali from Chennai?
Plan on a full two days. A three-hour flight to Delhi plus 12 to 14 hours by road is too much in one go, so we break the drive with a night in Chandigarh, Mandi or Kullu. Flying into Kullu can shorten it when flights operate.
When will our children see snow in Manali?
Snow is most reliable at Solang and Sissu from late December to February, which matches the half-yearly school holidays and Pongal. In April to June snow is only higher up, at Rohtang and near the Atal Tunnel's north side. Snowfall varies every year, so no one can promise it on a date.
Do we need to buy heavy winter clothes before leaving?
Buy thermals, woollen socks, gloves, caps and a fleece at home. Rent the bulky jackets, snow trousers and gumboots in Manali for a few hundred rupees a set. This keeps luggage light and avoids spending on clothes you will rarely use at home.
Will we get South Indian food in Manali?
Some Mall Road restaurants serve dosa, idli and vada, and most of our hotels will prepare curd rice, sambar rice or rasam with a day's notice. North Indian vegetarian food is easy everywhere. Carry podi and a few ready-to-eat packets for long drive days.
Is the Chennai to Delhi train a good option for Manali?
It suits senior citizens who prefer not to fly. Trains such as the Tamil Nadu Express take about 33 to 36 hours from Chennai Central to New Delhi, then you continue by road. It adds about two days each way, so allow at least ten days in total.
Can we visit Rohtang Pass on a summer trip?
Usually yes from around May or June to November, when the pass is open. Each vehicle needs an online permit; the government portal lists ₹500 plus a ₹50 congestion charge, with a daily limit. We book a local taxi with the permit. Rohtang is closed in winter.
Is Manali safe for elderly parents travelling from the coast?
Yes, with a slow pace. Manali is about 2,050 m high, which most people handle well. We keep the first day free, avoid Rohtang for anyone with heart or breathing problems, choose heated rooms with lift access, and break the long drive in two.
Is Manali a good honeymoon choice for South Indian couples?
Yes. Riverside cottages, Old Manali cafés, Solang and the drive through the Atal Tunnel make it popular with newly married couples from Tamil Nadu. March to June and October to November are comfortable; December to February adds snow but very cold nights.
Can a large extended family travel together?
Yes. Every trip is private and customised, so an extended family travels as a private group on its own dates, usually in a Tempo Traveller with one driver, with rooms on the same floor and meals arranged for everyone's needs.
