Waterfalls, living root bridges and the glass-clear Umngot river – 18 Meghalaya packages from Ahmedabad, planned honestly around food, fitness and road time.
Meghalaya has become the North East trip Gujarati families ask for first, and it deserves the attention: Cherrapunji's waterfalls, the living root bridges of the Khasi hills, the Umngot river at Dawki so clear the boats seem to float on air, and Shillong's cool, church-dotted hill-station air. It is also a destination where the brochure and the ground differ – treks are steeper than photos suggest, roads are slower than the kilometres imply, and pure-vegetarian food takes planning. This page tells you all of it before you book.
All 18 packages below show live prices. Below them: the price guide, how to reach from Ahmedabad with drive times, three day-wise itineraries including the Kaziranga–Kamakhya combination, a trek-difficulty guide with senior-friendly swaps, the month-wise planner and our straight talk on food.

Meghalaya tour package price guide (2026)
Meghalaya packages on this page start at ₹13,200 per person. Hotel supply in Cherrapunji and Dawki is small, so prices climb faster than in Kerala or Himachal when a season is busy; booking 6–8 weeks ahead matters more here. Bands are per person on twin sharing with breakfast and dinner, private vehicle and sightseeing, excluding flights.
| Trip | Standard (3★ / good guesthouses) | Deluxe (4★ / boutique resorts) | Premium (best resorts, Innova Crysta) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3N/4D Shillong + Cherrapunji | ₹14,000 – 18,000 | ₹21,000 – 27,000 | ₹35,000+ |
| 4N/5D Shillong – Cherrapunji – Dawki | ₹18,000 – 23,000 | ₹27,000 – 35,000 | ₹45,000+ |
| 5N/6D Meghalaya complete with Mawlynnong and Krang Suri | ₹22,000 – 28,000 | ₹33,000 – 42,000 | ₹55,000+ |
| 7N/8D Assam + Meghalaya (Kaziranga, Kamakhya) | ₹32,000 – 40,000 | ₹46,000 – 58,000 | ₹75,000+ |
Add for flights: Ahmedabad–Guwahati return fares are usually ₹10,000–16,000 per person when booked 5–6 weeks ahead, more in Diwali week and in the Cherry Blossom fortnight of November. Usually extra on the ground: Dawki boat ride, Umiam lake water sports, Mawsmai and Arwah cave tickets, local guide fees at Nongriat and Mawlynnong, Kaziranga jeep and elephant safari fees, and lunches on the road. Every quote lists these clearly.
How to reach Meghalaya from Ahmedabad
- By air: fly Ahmedabad to Guwahati (GAU), the gateway for all of Meghalaya. Non-stop flights take about 3 hours on days they operate; one-stop options via Delhi or Kolkata take 5–6 hours door to door. Shillong's own airport at Umroi has very limited flights and small aircraft, so we route everyone through Guwahati.
- Guwahati to Shillong: about 100 km but 3 hours by road, climbing from the Brahmaputra plain to 1,500 m. Our packages include a private vehicle from Guwahati airport, with a stop at Umiam lake on the way.
- By train: Ahmedabad–Guwahati trains take around 45–50 hours. It is rarely worth it; the one exception is a large group doing a long North East circuit that wants to save on fares.
- Roads inside Meghalaya: good surface but narrow and winding, with frequent fog and rain. The driver matters more than the vehicle; we work with Khasi drivers who know the hill roads and the lunch stops.

Trek difficulty guide – and what to do instead if you are 60-plus
Meghalaya's famous sights are not equally accessible, and brochures rarely say so. Use this table to decide who in your family does what; our drivers wait at the car for those who sit a sight out, and we build each day so nobody is left behind.
| Sight | Effort | Our rating | Senior-friendly alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nongriat double-decker root bridge | About 3,500 steps down and the same back up, 3 – 5 hours round trip, slippery in rain | Hard – fit adults and teenagers only | Riwai single-decker root bridge at Mawlynnong: 20-minute flat walk |
| Rainbow falls (beyond Nongriat) | Adds 1 h 30 min each way to the above | Hard | Nohkalikai falls viewpoint – car park to view in 5 minutes |
| Krang Suri falls | About 20 – 30 minutes down stone steps and back | Moderate | Viewpoint at the top; or Dawki boat ride instead |
| Wei Sawdong falls | Steep bamboo ladders, 30 – 45 minutes each way | Moderate to hard | Dainthlen falls – roadside, flat |
| Mawsmai cave | 150 m lit cave, some ducking and narrow squeezes | Easy to moderate | Arwah cave has a wider, more level walkway |
| Laitlum canyon | Short walk from the car park to the ridge | Easy | – |
| Dawki / Shnongpdeng boat ride | Steps down to the riverbank | Easy | – |
| Kamakhya temple | Queues of 1 – 3 hours on normal days; VIP ticket shortens it | Easy to moderate | We pre-buy the special darshan ticket for seniors |
Two practical notes. First, after rain every step in Meghalaya is slippery; good grip shoes are not optional. Second, the Nongriat trek is done in the morning – start by 8 am from Tyrna so the climb back is finished before the afternoon heat and the daily cloud build-up.
Best time to visit Meghalaya – month by month
| Months | Weather | Good for | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | Rain tailing off, 15–24°C, everything green, waterfalls still strong | Diwali-week families – the best balance of waterfalls and dry roads | High in Diwali week; book by August |
| November | Dry, clear, 10–22°C; Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong usually mid-November | Couples, photographers, Dawki at its clearest; Kaziranga reopens | Peak during the festival fortnight |
| December – February | Cold mornings (4–8°C), sunny days, waterfalls thinner | Dawki crystal-clear boat rides, Kaziranga safaris, trekking in cool weather | Moderate; Christmas week high in Shillong |
| March – April | Warming, 15–25°C, pre-monsoon showers begin in April | Root-bridge treks before the rain, Kaziranga's last weeks; Shad Suk Mynsiem dance festival in Shillong in April | Moderate |
| May – early June | Humid, rain most afternoons, 20–28°C | Gujarat May-vacation families who want waterfalls in flow; Dawki water turns muddy | Moderate |
| Mid June – September (monsoon) | Among the wettest places on earth; 2–3 days of continuous rain common; landslides possible | Waterfall lovers prepared for rain; Shillong-focused short trips; not for treks | Lowest |
The honest summary: for clear Dawki water, dry trails and the Kaziranga combination, travel between November and March. For big waterfalls without monsoon risk, October is the sweet spot. Cherry Blossom Festival dates are announced each year, usually for a weekend in mid-November; we hold rooms in Shillong for it from September.

Food, hotels and tips for Gujarati travellers – the honest version
- Pure-vegetarian food is genuinely harder in Meghalaya than anywhere else we sell. Khasi and Jaintia cuisine is meat-based, most local eateries cook everything in one kitchen, and in Cherrapunji, Dawki and the villages a dedicated vegetarian restaurant may simply not exist. This is manageable, but only with planning.
- What works: Shillong has Marwari bhojanalayas and vegetarian restaurants around Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah, including places that serve a Gujarati-style thali; Guwahati has several more near Paltan Bazar and Kamakhya. In Cherrapunji and Dawki we book hotels and camps whose kitchens will prepare a pure-veg or Jain menu on advance notice, and we confirm it in writing. On long drives we stop at vegetarian dhabas we know rather than the first roadside place.
- Carry: theplas, khakhra, dry snacks, instant poha or upma, and a small immersion heater – not because you will go hungry, but because lunch on a trek day or a boat day is often a packed meal. Jain travellers should expect simpler menus (dal, rice, roti, one sabzi) outside Shillong.
- Hotel categories: Shillong has proper 3★ and 4★ hotels and a few heritage properties; Cherrapunji has resorts with valley views and clean guesthouses, but no true 5★; Dawki and Shnongpdeng offer riverside camps and a handful of guesthouses – choose the camp for the experience and Shillong for comfort if anyone in the group needs a lift or a heater.
- Pack: a rain jacket and umbrella in every month, shoes with grip, quick-dry clothes, a torch for caves and camps, mosquito repellent for Dawki and Kaziranga, and warm layers from November to February.
- Money and connectivity: UPI works in Shillong and Guwahati; carry cash for villages, boat rides, guides and camps. Mobile network is weak in Nongriat, Dawki and parts of the Sohra road – download maps and tell family you may be unreachable for a few hours.
- Timings and permits: Indian citizens need no permit for Meghalaya or Assam. Sights close by 5 pm and roads are unlit; we plan every drive to end before dark. Sundays are quiet – many shops and some eateries in Shillong close.

Meghalaya tour packages – frequently asked questions
How much does a Meghalaya tour package cost from Ahmedabad?
Meghalaya packages on this page start at ₹13,200 per person. A 4-night Shillong–Cherrapunji–Dawki package with good 3-star hotels, breakfast, dinner and a private car costs ₹18,000–23,000 per person excluding flights; boutique resorts take it to ₹27,000–35,000. Ahmedabad–Guwahati return flights add roughly ₹10,000–16,000.
How do I reach Meghalaya from Ahmedabad?
Fly Ahmedabad to Guwahati – about 3 hours non-stop on days it operates, or 5–6 hours with one stop via Delhi or Kolkata – then drive 3 hours to Shillong. Shillong's own airport has very few flights, so all our packages start and end at Guwahati, which also lets you add Kamakhya temple on the way.
Is pure-vegetarian or Jain food available in Meghalaya?
In Shillong and Guwahati, yes – Marwari bhojanalayas and vegetarian restaurants, including Gujarati-style thali. In Cherrapunji, Dawki and the villages dedicated vegetarian restaurants are rare, so we book hotels and camps that cook pure-veg or Jain menus on advance notice and confirm it in writing. We also suggest carrying theplas and dry snacks for trek and boat days.
How difficult is the double-decker root bridge trek?
Hard. From Tyrna village it is about 3,500 steps down to Nongriat and the same back up, taking 3–5 hours in total, and the steps are slippery after rain. It suits fit adults and teenagers. Seniors and small children should visit the Riwai single-decker root bridge at Mawlynnong instead – a flat 20-minute walk.
When is the best time to visit Meghalaya?
November to March for clear skies, dry trails, crystal-clear water at Dawki and Kaziranga safaris. October is ideal if you want strong waterfalls without monsoon risk and suits Diwali-week travel. The Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong is usually in mid-November. June to September is extremely wet and not recommended for treks.
When is the Dawki river clear enough to see the bottom?
From November to March, and often into April, the Umngot river at Dawki and Shnongpdeng is transparent enough to see the riverbed from the boat. From May through October rain muddies the water and the famous photographs are not possible, though the boat ride still runs when the river is safe.
How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Four nights covers Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong and Dawki comfortably. Five nights lets fit travellers add the Nongriat root-bridge trek and Krang Suri. Seven nights is right for the Assam combination with two nights at Kaziranga and Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.
Can we combine Meghalaya with Kaziranga and Kamakhya?
Yes – it is our most popular family itinerary. Kamakhya temple is in Guwahati, 3 hours from Shillong, and fits the arrival or departure day. Kaziranga is 5 hours from Guwahati and open roughly November to April; two nights there with jeep and elephant safaris makes a 7-night Assam–Meghalaya trip.
Is Meghalaya suitable for senior citizens?
Yes, with the right plan. We keep drives to 2–3 hours, skip Nongriat and Wei Sawdong in favour of Riwai root bridge, Nohkalikai viewpoint and Dainthlen falls, book Shillong hotels with lifts, pre-buy the special darshan ticket at Kamakhya, and pre-arrange vegetarian meals in every town. Shillong and Dawki boat rides are easy for most seniors.
What are the road conditions and drive times in Meghalaya?
Roads are surfaced but narrow, winding and often foggy, so average speed is 30–35 km/h. Guwahati–Shillong takes 3 hours, Shillong–Cherrapunji 2 hours, Cherrapunji–Dawki about 3 hours and Shillong–Kaziranga 6–7 hours. We plan every drive to end before dark and keep one short-drive day in each itinerary.
Do Indians need a permit for Meghalaya?
No. Indian citizens need no Inner Line Permit or special permission for Meghalaya or Assam. Carry a government photo ID for hotel check-in and for the Dawki border area. Permits are required only for some neighbouring states such as Arunachal Pradesh, which we arrange if you extend your trip.
What is usually not included in a Meghalaya package?
Flights unless added, lunches, Dawki boat ride and Umiam water sports, cave and park entry tickets, local guide fees at Nongriat and Mawlynnong, Kaziranga safari fees, camera charges, tips and GST at 5%. Our quotes list inclusions and exclusions side by side so the price you see in Ahmedabad is the price you pay.
