When Ahmedabad crosses 42°C in May, every family has the same conversation: which hills, how far, and can we drive. The honest answer depends on the number of days you have. Mount Abu and Saputara are a tank of fuel away; Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir need a flight and a long road; Munnar, Coorg and Ooty are a flight and a short drive; Darjeeling and Meghalaya are a full day of travel each way but worth every hour.
This page lays all of them out for Gujarati families: drive versus fly, nights needed, what each hill station is actually like, when to go, honest budgets, and how we plan the summer vacation so the better hotels are not gone by the time schools close. Every trip is private – your own vehicle and driver on the hill roads, your own dates, hotels chosen for lifts, hot water and pure-veg kitchens.

Hill station packages on this page start under ₹7,000 per person for a 2-night Mount Abu or Saputara break by road, and under ₹25,000 including flights for Shimla or Mussoorie outside the peak May weeks. Every flown package includes a private vehicle with a hill-experienced driver from the airport for the whole trip.
Planning the Gujarat summer vacation in the hills
Gujarat schools close in early May and reopen around the second week of June. That is also peak month for every northern hill station, so the sequence matters:
- By mid-February: decide between Kashmir, Himachal or Uttarakhand for the north, or Munnar, Coorg, Ooty for the south. Kashmir and Manali hotels for May are 50–70% booked by March.
- By end of February: book flights from Ahmedabad. Chandigarh, Srinagar and Dehradun fares for May double between February and April.
- Choose your weeks: the first week of May (1–7) and the last week (25–31) are busiest because of long weekends and wedding season; 10–22 May is calmer with the same weather. Early June is quieter still and cheaper, with the hills green before the monsoon.
- Avoid these in May: Mount Abu and Saputara on weekends (full of day-trippers), the Shimla Mall road on Saturday evenings, and Rohtang Pass on the first days after it opens (long queues).
- Go south if you book late: Munnar, Coorg and Ooty have more rooms, a non-stop flight to Kochi, and comfortable 20–25°C days in May; they are the best last-minute hill holiday from Ahmedabad.
Diwali (October–November) is the second hill season – Darjeeling, Meghalaya, Munnar, Kashmir's autumn and Uttarakhand's clear skies are at their best – and the hotels are cheaper than in May.
Hill stations within a day's drive – Mount Abu, Saputara and Maharashtra
- Mount Abu: Nakki Lake, Sunset Point, Guru Shikhar (Rajasthan's highest point), the Dilwara Jain temples, Achalgarh fort and Trevor's Tank. Pure-veg Gujarati food everywhere, resorts with pools, and a cool 25–30°C in May. Two nights is right; three if you add Ambaji on the way.
- Saputara: Gujarat's only hill station – the lake, ropeway, Sunset and Sunrise points, Gira falls (monsoon), tribal museum and the Vansda forest. Best in the monsoon for greenery and in winter for clear skies; hotels are simple. Combine with Shirdi and Nashik for a 3–4 night loop.
- Matheran, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar: Maharashtra's hills are reachable overnight by train to Pune or Mumbai. Matheran is car-free (toy train or horse), Mahabaleshwar has strawberries and viewpoints, Lonavala has Bhushi dam and caves. Best October to March and in the monsoon; too hot in May.
Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir – the classic summer hills
- Shimla – Kufri – Narkanda: the Mall and Ridge, Jakhoo temple, Kufri's adventure park and horse rides, Narkanda's apple orchards and Hatu Peak. Add Chail for quiet. Fine for grandparents and small children; the Kalka–Shimla toy train is a 5-hour heritage ride.
- Manali – Solang – Sissu: Hadimba temple, Old Manali cafés, Solang Valley ropeway and paragliding, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu's waterfalls and snowfields, Naggar castle, Kullu rafting. Four nights minimum because of the 8-hour drive from Chandigarh; we often split it with a night at Chandigarh or Kasauli.
- Dharamshala – McLeod Ganj – Dalhousie – Khajjiar: the Dalai Lama temple, Bhagsu falls, the cricket stadium, Khajjiar's meadow; quieter than Manali and better for seniors.
- Mussoorie – Dhanaulti – Rishikesh: Mall road, Kempty falls, Lal Tibba, Dhanaulti's deodar forests and eco-park, then Rishikesh for the Ganga aarti and rafting. Short drives from Dehradun make it the easiest Uttarakhand hill trip for families.
- Nainital – Bhimtal – Ranikhet – Corbett: lake boating, Naina Devi temple, the ropeway, Bhimtal's island café, Ranikhet's golf course and pines, and a Jim Corbett safari to finish. Five nights.
- Kashmir – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg: the non-stop Ahmedabad–Srinagar flight makes this the most-booked summer hill trip from Gujarat. Dal Lake shikara and houseboat, Mughal gardens, Gulmarg gondola, Pahalgam's Betaab and Aru valleys, Sonmarg's Thajiwas glacier (snow in May). Pure-veg and Gujarati food is easy in Srinagar.
Southern hills – Munnar, Coorg, Ooty, Wayanad
- Munnar – Thekkady: tea estates, Eravikulam National Park (closed roughly February–March for calving), Mattupetty dam, Top Station, then Thekkady's spice gardens and Periyar lake. A non-stop flight to Kochi and 4 hours by road; 20–25°C in May. Gujarati thali restaurants in Munnar town.
- Coorg: coffee estates, Abbey falls, Raja's Seat, Dubare elephant camp, Namdroling monastery at Bylakuppe, Talacauvery. Homestays on estates are the real experience; 3–4 nights from Bengaluru or Mangaluru.
- Ooty – Coonoor: the Nilgiri toy train from Mettupalayam, botanical garden, Doddabetta peak, Pykara lake, Coonoor's tea gardens and Sim's Park. Cooler than Coorg (2,240 m); combine with Mysuru for 5 nights.
- Wayanad: Edakkal caves, Banasura dam, Soochipara falls, tree-house stays, Chembra peak trek. Via Calicut airport (2–3 hours), quieter than Munnar.
Eastern hills – Darjeeling, Gangtok, Shillong
- Darjeeling: Tiger Hill sunrise over Kanchenjunga, the toy train to Ghoom, tea estates, the zoo and mountaineering institute, Batasia loop. October–November and March–May are clear; the monsoon hides the mountains.
- Gangtok and Sikkim: MG Marg, Rumtek, Tsomgo lake and Nathu La (permits, closed Mondays and Tuesdays), Pelling for Kanchenjunga views, Lachung and Yumthang in the north. A Darjeeling–Gangtok trip needs 5–6 nights.
- Shillong – Cherrapunji – Dawki: Umiam lake, Elephant falls, Shillong Peak, Cherrapunji's Nohkalikai falls and caves, the living root bridges, Mawlynnong village and the crystal-clear Umngot river at Dawki. October–April; the monsoon (June–September) is spectacular but relentless.
Food, hotels and hill-road tips for Gujarati families
- Pure-veg and Jain food: Mount Abu, Saputara, Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital and Srinagar have Gujarati or pure-veg restaurants; Munnar has Gujarati thali; Coorg, Ooty, Darjeeling and Shillong need advance arrangement, which we make with the hotel kitchen in writing.
- Hotels: ask about the view (a valley-facing room is worth ₹1,000–2,000 more), hot water timings, heating (needed above 2,000 m even in May evenings) and lifts – many hill hotels are built down a slope with the restaurant several floors away.
- Hill roads: carry motion-sickness tablets, keep children facing forward, stop every 90 minutes, and never plan a long hill drive on the same day as a flight. Our drivers are locals who do these roads daily.
- Pack: a light jacket and a warm layer for evenings in May, a raincoat for the south and east, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen (hill sun is strong), and cash for small towns where UPI is patchy.
- Seniors: altitude above 2,500 m (Gulmarg Phase 2, Nathu La, Hatu Peak) can cause breathlessness; we schedule those for midday and keep an oxygen can in the vehicle in Sikkim and Kashmir.

Hill station packages – frequently asked questions
Which is the nearest hill station to Ahmedabad?
Mount Abu, about 230 km and 4½ hours by road via Palanpur, at 1,220 m with 25–30°C in May. Saputara, Gujarat's only hill station, is about 400 km and 6 hours. Both suit a 2-night trip by your own car or a car we arrange, with pure-veg Gujarati food everywhere.
Which hill station is best for the May school vacation from Ahmedabad?
Kashmir for the non-stop flight, snow at Sonmarg and 15–25°C days; Shimla–Manali or Mussoorie for the classic Himalayan holiday; Munnar, Coorg or Ooty if you book late, because they have more rooms and a non-stop flight to Kochi. Book northern hills by end of February – May hotels are 50–70% full by March.
How much does a hill station package cost?
Mount Abu or Saputara 2-night breaks start under ₹7,000 per person by road. Shimla, Mussoorie, Munnar and Coorg cost ₹22,000–40,000 per person for 3–5 nights including flights and a private vehicle; Kashmir ₹30,000–48,000; Manali ₹26,000–38,000; Darjeeling–Gangtok and Meghalaya ₹32,000–50,000 for 5–6 nights.
Should we drive or fly to the hills from Ahmedabad?
Drive to Mount Abu, Saputara and (with an overnight stop) the Maharashtra hills. Fly to everything else – Chandigarh for Himachal, Dehradun for Mussoorie, Srinagar for Kashmir, Kochi for Munnar, Bengaluru for Coorg, Bagdogra for Darjeeling, Guwahati for Shillong – and use a private vehicle from the airport. Driving to Himachal from Ahmedabad takes two full days each way.
Which hill stations are good for senior citizens?
Mount Abu, Shimla–Kufri, Mussoorie, Dharamshala, Munnar and Srinagar – short drives, hotels with lifts available, pure-veg food and gentle sightseeing. Avoid Manali's 8-hour drive unless split with a night, and high passes like Nathu La. We confirm lifts, ground-floor rooms and hot water, and keep drives under 4 hours.
Which hill station is best in the monsoon?
Saputara (monsoon festival in August, waterfalls), Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar, Coorg and Wayanad, Munnar and Udaipur's surroundings – all green and cool. Avoid Himachal and Uttarakhand in July–August because of landslides, and the North East for its extreme rainfall unless you want to see Cherrapunji at full force.
When is the best time for Darjeeling and the North East hills?
October to November and March to May for clear Kanchenjunga views in Darjeeling and Gangtok; October to April for Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki when the Umngot river is crystal clear. Diwali week is ideal for all three and cheaper than the northern hills in May.
Is pure-vegetarian or Jain food available at hill stations?
Easily in Mount Abu, Saputara, Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital, Srinagar and Munnar, which have Gujarati or pure-veg restaurants. In Coorg, Ooty, Darjeeling, Gangtok and Shillong we arrange pure-veg and Jain meals with the hotel kitchen in advance and confirm them in your voucher.
How many days do we need for a hill station trip?
Two nights for Mount Abu or Saputara; three to four for Shimla, Mussoorie, Coorg or Ooty; four to five for Manali, Munnar–Thekkady, Dharamshala or Nainital–Corbett; five for Kashmir; five to six for Darjeeling–Gangtok or Meghalaya. Add a night whenever the drive from the airport is over 6 hours.
Can we see snow at a hill station during the summer vacation?
Yes, old snow at the high passes: Rohtang near Manali (opens around May, permit needed), Sonmarg's Thajiwas glacier and Zoji La in Kashmir, Nathu La in Sikkim. There is no fresh snowfall in May. For real snow, visit Gulmarg, Narkanda, Sissu or Auli between late December and February.
