Diwali Vacation 2026 From Ahmedabad: Dates, Fares & Plan
By Vibrant Holidays Team · Published 28 October 2026
Gujarat's primary schools close for the Diwali vacation 2026 from Thursday 5 November to Wednesday 25 November, a 21-day break, with the second term starting on 26 November. Diwali itself falls on Sunday 8 November, Bestu Varas (Gujarati New Year) on Tuesday 10 November and Labh Pancham on Saturday 14 November. That gives Ahmedabad families a clear question: which of the three weeks do you travel in, where can you still get seats, and what will it cost? This guide answers exactly that, with real fares we checked on 28 October for the Diwali window.
Diwali vacation 2026: the dates that decide your trip
| Date (2026) | What it is | What it means for travel |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 5 Nov | Gujarat primary school vacation begins | First possible departure day for families |
| Fri 6 Nov | Dhanteras | Most families are home; roads out of the city are quiet |
| Sun 8 Nov | Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Lowest demand day of the whole window on many routes |
| Tue 10 Nov | Bestu Varas (Gujarati New Year) | Family visits; departures pick up from the 11th |
| Wed 11 Nov | Bhai Dooj (Bhai Bij) | Peak departure week starts; fares and hotel rates are highest 11–15 Nov |
| Sat 14 Nov | Labh Pancham | Shops and offices reopen; the "second wave" of family trips begins |
| 15–25 Nov | Last 11 days of vacation | Best value week for flights and hotels; Dev Diwali on Tue 24 Nov |
| Thu 26 Nov | Second term begins | Be home by the evening of 25 Nov |
Secondary schools and private CBSE schools in Ahmedabad usually follow the same window, but a few run a shorter break, so confirm your own school's circular before booking non-refundable fares.
Which week should you travel in?
There are three realistic windows, and they behave very differently on price.
Window 1: 5–9 November (before Diwali)
Few Gujarati families leave before Lakshmi Puja, so this is the quietest week on flights out of Ahmedabad. On 28 October, a direct IndiGo return for two to Goa (7–10 Nov) was showing from about ₹43,600 for the pair, and a direct Dubai return for two (7–11 Nov) from about ₹90,800 including checked bags. The trade-off is obvious: you spend Diwali night away from home. It works well for couples and for families who celebrate early with elders and then leave.
Window 2: 11–15 November (Bhai Dooj to Labh Pancham)
This is when most of Ahmedabad travels, and prices show it. Goa fares for 13–17 Nov were about ₹50,000–61,000 for two on the same IndiGo flights that cost ₹43,600 a week earlier. Hotels in Goa, Udaipur, Mount Abu and Diu are often sold out for 12–15 Nov by the end of October. If this is the only week you can take, book today and accept slightly odd flight timings (the 4:00 am IndiGo to Goa is usually the cheapest).
Window 3: 15–25 November (after Labh Pancham)
Our pick for value. Fares soften, hotel rates drop 15–30% compared with the Labh Pancham weekend, and the weather is at its best almost everywhere in India: Kerala's backwaters are calm, Rajasthan is cool at night, and Kashmir's chinar trees are in full autumn colour with the first snow possible in Gulmarg towards the end of the month. A 6-night Kerala trip departing 15 Nov had direct IndiGo seats (6E 6391, 17:05–19:30) from about ₹53,000–60,000 return for two.
What still fits the Diwali window from Ahmedabad
These are not "best places" rankings; they are the trips where we could still find seats and rooms for the vacation dates when we checked on 28 October, grouped by how you reach them. All fares are indicative, for two adults, economy, and change daily.
| Trip | Nights | How you reach | Indicative flights for 2 (28 Oct check) | Veg / Jain food |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goa | 3–4 | Direct IndiGo, 1h 30m | from ₹43,600 (7–10 Nov); ₹50,000+ (13–17 Nov) | Easy in Panjim, Calangute and Margao; Gujarati thali places exist |
| Kerala (Munnar–Alleppey–Kochi) | 5–6 | Direct IndiGo AMD–COK, 2h 25m | from ₹53,000–60,000 (15–21 Nov) | Houseboats and most resorts cook pure veg on request; tell us about Jain needs at booking |
| Kashmir (Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam) | 5–6 | One stop via Delhi out; direct IndiGo SXR–AMD back (16:50–19:05) | from ₹52,000–57,000 (13–19 Nov) | Gujarati and Punjabi veg restaurants around Dal Lake; carry theplas for Gulmarg day |
| Rajasthan (Udaipur, Mount Abu, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer) | 3–6 | By car: Udaipur ~4 h, Mount Abu ~4.5 h, Jaisalmer ~9 h | No flights needed; fuel + tolls ₹6,000–15,000 round trip | Pure veg and Jain food everywhere; the easiest region for elders |
| Within Gujarat (Rann Utsav, Statue of Unity, Dwarka–Somnath, Saputara, Diu) | 2–4 | Car or train; Rann Utsav tent city opens 1 Nov 2026 | No flights; tent city and hotels are the main cost | Home ground; no planning needed |
| Dubai | 4–5 | Direct IndiGo / Emirates / Air Arabia, 3 h | from ₹90,800 with bags (7–11 Nov) | Bur Dubai and Karama have dozens of Gujarati and Jain restaurants |
| Thailand (Bangkok–Pattaya or Phuket) | 5–6 | Direct or one-stop, 4–5 h | see our Thailand cost breakdown | Indian veg restaurants in every tourist area; Jain food needs advance notice |
Two notes on the international options. Dubai celebrates Diwali openly: the city-wide Dubai Festival of Lights runs 2–12 November 2026 and the Noor festival at Al Seef on Dubai Creek is on 7 and 8 November, so a family landing on the 7th gets Diwali in Dubai without missing it entirely. For visas, read our Dubai visa guide for Indians first; we apply on your behalf, but approval is always at the discretion of UAE immigration. Thailand needs no visa for Indian passport holders for stays up to 30 days (rule in force since 15 September 2026), but you must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours of landing; details are in our Thailand visa page.
Booking late: a realistic checklist for Ahmedabad families
- Trains are the problem, not flights. The 60-day advance reservation window for 5–14 November closed in early September, so Goa, Udaipur and Mumbai trains are mostly waitlisted. Tatkal opens at 10:00 am (AC) one day before travel and is a gamble with children. For anything beyond Rajasthan, fly.
- Book the odd-hour flight. On the Goa route the 4:00 am departure was consistently ₹3,000–6,000 cheaper per person than the 12:35 pm one on the same day. The 11:20 am Dubai return was cheaper than the Sharjah midnight one once you add a checked bag.
- Pick Window 3 if you can. Departing on or after 15 November is the single biggest saving available this year, often more than any discount code.
- Hotels: ask for the cancellation terms in writing. Diwali-week rates are usually non-refundable. Our family packages lock the hotel and the veg meal plan together so you are not negotiating food at check-in.
- Going abroad? Sort forex and insurance before the long weekend. Banks and exchange counters are shut on 8, 10 and 11 November. Our forex desk on C G Road can load a card in a day, and travel insurance is issued online within an hour.
- Carry a Diwali food kit. Theplas, khakhra, dry nasta and a small pressure cooker's worth of patience solve most veg-food gaps on hill roads and houseboats.
Sample plan: a 6-night Kerala Diwali vacation (15–21 November)
This is the shape of trip we book most often for Ahmedabad families in Window 3; swap Kerala for Kashmir and the structure stays the same.
- Sun 15 Nov – Ahmedabad to Kochi. IndiGo 6E 6391 at 17:05, land 19:30, transfer to a Fort Kochi homestay. Dinner at a South Indian veg restaurant.
- Mon 16 Nov – Kochi to Munnar. 4-hour drive through spice country; afternoon at the tea gardens.
- Tue 17 Nov – Munnar. Eravikulam National Park (reopens after the calving season by mid-November in most years; we reconfirm before travel), Mattupetty dam, tea museum.
- Wed 18 Nov – Munnar to Thekkady. Periyar lake boat ride, spice plantation walk, Kalaripayattu show in the evening.
- Thu 19 Nov – Thekkady to Alleppey. Board a houseboat by noon; the crew cooks pure veg or Jain food on request. Night on the backwaters.
- Fri 20 Nov – Alleppey to Kochi. Disembark after breakfast, Fort Kochi walk, Chinese fishing nets, Jew Town shopping.
- Sat 21 Nov – Kochi to Ahmedabad. IndiGo 6E 6392 at 20:05, home by 22:35, four clear days before school.
What a Diwali vacation costs from Ahmedabad (family of 4, indicative)
- Within Gujarat or Rajasthan by car, 3 nights: ₹30,000–60,000 including fuel, a 3-star or heritage hotel and meals. Rann Utsav tent stays add ₹8,000–15,000 per night for a family tent in peak weeks.
- Goa, 4 nights by air: ₹90,000–1,40,000 including flights, a 4-star beach stay and a car.
- Kerala or Kashmir, 6 nights by air: ₹1,30,000–1,90,000 including flights, hotels, houseboat or Gulmarg day, private car and breakfast.
- Dubai, 5 nights: ₹2,40,000–3,20,000 including flights, visa, 4-star hotel, Burj Khalifa and desert safari, airport transfers.
These are the ranges our team quoted in the last two weeks of October for Window 2 and Window 3 departures; Window 2 sits at the top of each range, Window 3 at the bottom. Every Vibrant Holidays trip is private and customised, so the number moves with your hotel category and how many sightseeing days you want.
Travelling with elders and small children
Over 12 years on C G Road we have planned hundreds of Diwali trips for three-generation families, and the pattern is consistent: choose one base per three nights rather than a new hotel every night, keep drives under five hours, and book the direct flight even if it costs ₹2,000 more per person. Rajasthan and Gujarat are the easiest for grandparents because veg food is everywhere and there is no altitude. Kerala is gentle too, as long as Munnar's single hilly day is planned with a mid-morning start. Kashmir in late November needs a layer plan (thermals, a windproof jacket, gloves) and a hotel with central heating; our Kashmir in December packing guide applies from about 20 November onwards.
If you only have a long weekend rather than the full vacation, our weekend getaways from Ahmedabad guide compares 18 short trips by drive time.
FAQ: Diwali vacation 2026 from Ahmedabad
When is the Diwali vacation 2026 in Gujarat schools?
Primary schools in Gujarat are closed from 5 November to 25 November 2026 (21 days) and reopen for the second term on 26 November, as per the Directorate of Primary Education circular of 26 October 2026. Most secondary and private schools follow the same window; check your school's notice.
Which dates are cheapest to travel during the Diwali vacation?
Departures on 7–9 November (around Diwali day) and on or after 15 November (after Labh Pancham) were clearly cheaper when we checked on 28 October. The 11–14 November stretch, Bhai Dooj to Labh Pancham, is the most expensive for both flights and hotels.
Is it too late to book a Diwali trip now?
No. Flights to Goa, Kerala, Kashmir and Dubai still had seats for most dates on 28 October, though trains are waitlisted. Road trips to Rajasthan and within Gujarat can be booked up to the last day; the constraint is hotel availability in Udaipur, Mount Abu and Diu on 12–15 November.
Can we get Jain food on a Diwali trip outside Gujarat?
Yes, with notice. Kerala houseboats, Kashmir hotels and Dubai hotels all handle pure veg and Jain requests when they are written into the booking. We confirm it with the property before you travel rather than leaving it to the restaurant on the day.
Do we need a visa for Dubai or Thailand for a Diwali trip?
Dubai needs a UAE visa for most Indian passport holders, applied in advance; we process it, but approval rests with UAE immigration. Thailand is visa-free for Indians for up to 30 days, with the Thailand Digital Arrival Card filed online within 72 hours of arrival.
Which Diwali trip is best for grandparents?
Rajasthan by car (Udaipur or Mount Abu), the Statue of Unity, or a Rann Utsav tent stay. All three have veg food everywhere, short drives, no altitude and no flights.
