Kashmir In December: Snow, Gondola & What To Pack

Overview

By Vibrant Holidays Team · Published 27 October 2026

Kashmir in December is the month the valley turns white. Gulmarg gets its first big snowfalls, Dal Lake wakes up under a sheet of mist, and the famous Chillai Kalan – Kashmir's 40-day "great cold" – begins on 21 December. For Gujarati families and couples flying out of Ahmedabad, December is the one month where you can almost guarantee snow without the rush and prices of the Christmas–New Year week, if you plan it right.

This guide is written for travellers from Ahmedabad and the rest of Gujarat: what the weather actually feels like, which places stay open, how the Gulmarg gondola works in winter, where to find pure veg and Jain food in Srinagar, what to pack, indicative costs in rupees, and a simple 5-night plan. If you want us to plan the trip end-to-end, see our Kashmir tour packages from Ahmedabad.

Kashmir in December at a glance

  • Weather: Srinagar days 5–10°C, nights 0 to −5°C; Gulmarg and Pahalgam colder, often −5 to −8°C at night by the third week. During a December cold spell in 2021, Srinagar recorded −5.8°C, Gulmarg −5.5°C and Pahalgam −7.4°C on the eve of Chillai Kalan.
  • Snow: Gulmarg (2,650 m) usually has snow on the ground from early-to-mid December; Srinagar city sees its first snowfall most years in the last ten days of the month, but it is not guaranteed.
  • Open: Srinagar, Dal Lake houseboats, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and, since January 2025, Sonamarg via the new all-weather Z-Morh tunnel.
  • Closed or limited: Tulip garden (opens only in spring), Mughal gardens are open but leafless, high-altitude treks, and the Gulmarg gondola's Phase 2 on bad-weather days.
  • Flights: Ahmedabad–Srinagar direct on IndiGo in about 2 hours 10 minutes; one-stop options via Delhi or Chandigarh.
  • Best window: 5–20 December for lower prices and fewer crowds; 21–31 December for maximum snow but peak-season rates.

Week by week: what December looks like in the valley

1–10 December: crisp, clear and cheaper

Early December is dry and sunny on most days. Srinagar's chinar trees have shed their leaves, the air is sharp, and Gulmarg has light-to-moderate snow at the top stations with patchy snow in the meadow. Hotels and houseboats are at their lowest rates of the year in this window, and flights from Ahmedabad are easiest to find under ₹12,000 one-way. If your main goal is a comfortable family holiday with some snow play at Gulmarg's upper phases, this is the sweet spot.

11–20 December: snow arrives in Gulmarg

By mid-December Gulmarg typically has a proper white blanket and the ski season begins. Pahalgam's Betaab and Aru valleys start to look like postcards. Night temperatures in Srinagar dip below zero, so houseboat stays need a proper heater (ask for a "bukhari" or an electric room heater, and check the blankets before you book).

21–31 December: Chillai Kalan and the Christmas rush

Chillai Kalan starts on 21 December and runs 40 days to 30 January, followed by the milder Chillai Khurd (20 days) and Chillai Bachha (10 days). This is the coldest stretch of the year: Dal Lake's edges freeze on the coldest mornings, fog delays morning flights at Srinagar airport, and snow in the city itself becomes likely. It is also the week every Ahmedabad school is on Christmas break, so flights and hotels cost 40–60% more than the first week of the month. Book two months ahead if you want this window.

Gulmarg in December: gondola, snow play and what can go wrong

Gulmarg is the reason most Gujarati families come to Kashmir in winter, and the gondola is the reason they come to Gulmarg. It runs in two phases operated by the J&K Cable Car Corporation:

  • Phase 1 – Gulmarg to Kongdoori (3,080 m): the family-friendly ride; roughly 10 minutes each way, with snow play, sledging and snow-bike operators at the top. Tickets are around ₹800–850 per person (return).
  • Phase 2 – Kongdoori to Apharwat (about 3,900 m): the one that goes above the clouds. Around ₹1,000–1,050 per person extra, and it needs a Phase 1 ticket. In December it is colder, windier and closes without notice when the weather turns.

How to book: tickets open online up to 60 days in advance on the official JKCC e-ticket site, and a limited number of Phase 1 walk-in tickets are sold at the Gulmarg counter in the morning. Book Phase 1 online for a fixed date as soon as your flights are confirmed; for Phase 2, decide on the day based on the sky. Prices are revised from time to time, so treat the figures above as indicative.

Three things that catch first-time visitors:

  1. The Tangmarg stop. After heavy snowfall, private cars and taxis are stopped at Tangmarg, 12 km below Gulmarg, and you continue in a local 4×4 "snow jeep" or chained vehicle for an extra ₹2,000–3,500 per vehicle. Budget for it and leave Srinagar by 7 AM.
  2. Snow-boot and jacket rentals. Gumboots, snow jackets and gloves are rented at Gulmarg for about ₹300–500 per set. They are worth it for kids even if you have carried jackets from Ahmedabad.
  3. Phase 2 is a bonus, not a plan. If it is closed, Kongdoori already has more snow than most Gujarati kids have ever seen. Do not pay touts promising "confirmed" Phase 2 seats.

Srinagar and Dal Lake in winter

Winter Srinagar is quieter and more local than the summer version. A shikara ride at 8 AM when the lake is wrapped in mist is one of the most beautiful things you will do in India. Stay one or two nights on a houseboat for the experience, then move to a heated hotel for the rest of the trip – houseboats are charming but cold after sunset, and seniors in particular sleep better in a hotel with central heating. Our earlier post on the magic of houseboats in Kashmir explains how to choose one.

In the city, visit the Shankaracharya temple (sunrise view over the frozen edges of the lake), the Hazratbal shrine, and the old-city markets around Lal Chowk for pashmina, saffron and dry fruits. Nishat and Shalimar gardens are open but bare; go only if you want the snow-dusted chinar avenues for photographs.

Pahalgam and Sonamarg in December

Pahalgam (about 95 km from Srinagar, 2.5–3 hours) stays open all winter and is usually less crowded than Gulmarg. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley get snow by mid-month; pony rides along the Lidder river are the classic family activity. Chandanwari, the start point of the Amarnath yatra, is often reachable by road into December but closes once snow deepens.

Sonamarg used to be cut off from November to April because the road beyond Gagangir was avalanche-prone. That changed on 13 January 2025 when the 6.5 km Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel opened, giving all-weather access to the town. Sonamarg in late December is now a real option for a snow day trip (about 80 km from Srinagar), but Thajiwas glacier and the road beyond toward Zoji La are not tourist territory in winter. Check local conditions with your driver on the morning you go.

Getting there from Ahmedabad

By air (recommended): IndiGo operates a direct Ahmedabad–Srinagar flight (around 2 hours 10 minutes). On a mid-December search we saw one-way fares from about ₹11,000 on the direct flight and from ₹10,400 on one-stop Air India and IndiGo connections via Delhi, with Chandigarh connections at a similar level. Return fares for a family of four in early December typically work out to ₹80,000–1,00,000 all-in; the Christmas week can be 50% higher. Prices vary by date and how early you book.

By train: there is no practical rail option from Ahmedabad for a short holiday – Jammu Tawi is 30+ hours away and Jammu–Srinagar by road is another 8–10 hours in winter, with the highway prone to closures after snowfall. Fly.

Morning fog alert: Srinagar airport sees fog delays in late December. Book the direct midday flight if possible, or keep a buffer of a few hours if you are connecting via Delhi, which has its own fog problem in December–January.

Veg and Jain food in Kashmir: easier than you think

Kashmiri cuisine is famously meat-heavy, so this is the question we get most from Gujarati families. The short answer: you will eat well, but plan your dinners.

  • Srinagar: the Durga Nag temple lane near Dalgate on Boulevard Road has a cluster of pure-veg bhojnalayas run by families from Punjab and Gujarat. Krishna Vaishno Bhojnalaya lists Jain versions of palak paneer, dal fry and malai kofta; Vishal Dhaba serves Gujarati kadhi alongside Punjabi staples. Both are a short walk from the main houseboat ghats.
  • Kashmiri veg dishes worth trying: dum aloo (Kashmiri style, with fennel and dry ginger), nadru yakhni (lotus stem in curd gravy), haak saag, rajma-chawal, and kahwa – the saffron-almond green tea you will drink five times a day.
  • Gulmarg and Pahalgam: hotel kitchens cook veg on request; carry theplas, khakhra and dry snacks for the gondola day since food options at Kongdoori are basic and non-veg heavy. Jain travellers should tell us at booking so we fix hotels with no onion-garlic cooking confirmed in writing.
  • Houseboats: most houseboat owners cook simple veg meals (dal, sabzi, roti, rice) for guests; confirm "no egg, no onion-garlic" the day before if needed.

What to pack for Kashmir in December

Ahmedabad's "winter" is 15°C; Gulmarg at the gondola top is −10°C with wind. Pack in layers, not bulk:

  • Thermal inner wear (top and bottom) – one set per person per two days.
  • A fleece or woollen mid-layer, plus one proper padded or down jacket. A heavy Ahmedabad sweater is not enough above Kongdoori.
  • Woollen cap that covers the ears, a neck scarf or buff, and two pairs of gloves (a thin pair for photos, a waterproof pair for snow).
  • Waterproof shoes or boots with grip. Sports shoes soak through in 10 minutes of snow; rent gumboots at Gulmarg if you don't want to buy.
  • Thick socks, lip balm, sunscreen (snow glare burns) and sunglasses.
  • For seniors: regular medicines with a prescription copy, a small hot-water bag, and a walking stick with a rubber tip for icy paths.
  • For kids: an extra change of clothes in the day bag, plus waterproof trousers for sledging.
  • A small power bank – phone batteries drain fast in the cold – and a printed copy of hotel and gondola bookings in case of no signal.

Indicative cost of a Kashmir trip in December from Ahmedabad

For a 5-night / 6-day private trip with a dedicated car and driver, 3-star to 4-star hotels, one houseboat night, daily breakfast and dinner, and the Phase 1 gondola, budget roughly:

  • Couple: from ₹55,000–75,000 for the land package, plus flights (about ₹22,000–28,000 per person return in early December).
  • Family of four (2 adults, 2 children): from ₹95,000–1,30,000 for the land package, plus flights.
  • Add-ons: snow jeep at Tangmarg ₹2,000–3,500 per vehicle, Phase 2 gondola about ₹1,000 per person, sledging and snow-bike ₹500–1,500 per activity, shikara ride ₹700–1,200 per hour.

All prices are indicative, vary by date and hotel category, and rise sharply from 21 December. The same trip in the first week of December is usually 20–30% cheaper than the last week. Travel insurance is worth adding for winter trips because weather cancellations are common – see our travel insurance page.

A simple 5-night Kashmir in December plan

  1. Day 1 – Ahmedabad to Srinagar: direct flight, check in to a heated hotel or houseboat on Dal Lake, evening shikara ride, dinner at a pure-veg bhojnalaya near Dalgate.
  2. Day 2 – Srinagar: Shankaracharya temple at sunrise, Hazratbal, Mughal gardens, old-city shopping, kahwa by the lake.
  3. Day 3 – Srinagar to Gulmarg: early start, Phase 1 gondola (pre-booked), snow play at Kongdoori, Phase 2 only if the weather is clear, overnight in Gulmarg so you get the meadow to yourself in the morning.
  4. Day 4 – Gulmarg to Pahalgam: drive via Pampore saffron fields (around 4 hours), afternoon at Betaab Valley, pony ride along the Lidder.
  5. Day 5 – Pahalgam to Srinagar: Aru Valley in the morning, return to Srinagar, last-evening shopping for pashmina and dry fruits.
  6. Day 6 – Fly home: midday flight to Ahmedabad.

Couples who want more snow and fewer drives can swap Pahalgam for a second Gulmarg night; families with seniors often do Srinagar 3 nights with day trips instead. Everything we plan is private and customised – no fixed groups, no tour manager, your own car and your own pace. Frequently asked questions

Is December a good time to visit Kashmir?

Yes, if you want snow. Gulmarg is reliably white from mid-December, Srinagar may see its first snowfall in the last ten days, and the valley is quieter than in summer. It is not the month for tulips, treks or lakeside gardens in bloom – for those, come in April–June.

Will I see snowfall in Kashmir in December?

Snow on the ground in Gulmarg is near-certain by mid-month. Actually watching snow fall is a matter of luck – late December gives the best odds, especially after Chillai Kalan begins on 21 December. Early December is drier and sunnier.

Does the Gulmarg gondola run in December?

Yes. Phase 1 runs on most days; Phase 2 closes frequently in December–February because of wind and snow. Book Phase 1 online in advance on the official JKCC site and treat Phase 2 as a bonus. Tickets are about ₹800–850 and ₹1,000–1,050 per person respectively, subject to revision.

Is Kashmir in December suitable for senior citizens and small children?

Yes, with care. Stay in hotels with central heating rather than houseboats for most nights, keep the Gulmarg day short, carry thermals and medicines, and avoid the Phase 2 gondola (altitude and cold). Private trips let seniors rest while the younger group plays in the snow.

Is there pure veg and Jain food in Kashmir?

Yes. Srinagar has dedicated pure-veg bhojnalayas near Dalgate with Jain options, hotels in Gulmarg and Pahalgam cook veg meals on request, and we confirm no-onion-garlic cooking at booking for Jain families. Carry theplas and dry snacks for the gondola day.

How much does a Kashmir trip from Ahmedabad cost in December?

Indicatively, a 5-night private trip starts around ₹55,000–75,000 per couple for the land package, plus about ₹22,000–28,000 per person for return flights in early December. Christmas week costs noticeably more; prices vary by date and hotel category.
