Kerala Vs Kashmir For Honeymoon: Guide For Ahmedabad Couples

Overview

By Vibrant Holidays Team · Published 27 October 2026

Every wedding season, the same question lands on our desk on C G Road: Kerala or Kashmir for honeymoon? Both are India's most-booked honeymoon destinations from Ahmedabad, both are at their best between November and February, and both cost roughly the same once flights are added. Yet they are completely different trips. One is warm backwaters, spice-scented hills and a houseboat for two; the other is snow, shikaras and a wood-fired room in a Himalayan valley.

This guide compares Kerala vs Kashmir for honeymoon the way we do it with couples in our office: weather on your actual dates, real flight fares from Ahmedabad, what a 5-night trip costs, how easy pure veg and Jain food is, and the kind of couple each destination suits. There are two day-wise plans at the end so you can picture the week.

Quick verdict: who should pick which

Pick Kashmir if you are marrying between late November and February and the idea of snow, Gulmarg's gondola and a kangri-warmed houseboat on Dal Lake excites you both. Kashmir in winter is the more dramatic, "once in a lifetime" honeymoon, and it is the one couples post about.

Pick Kerala if you want warmth, slow mornings, Ayurvedic massages, a private houseboat and zero worry about flight disruptions or road closures. Kerala is the easier, gentler honeymoon, and the better choice if either of you dislikes cold or if you are travelling in March to May, when Kashmir is between seasons and Kerala's hills are still pleasant.

Budget is a tie. On land, Kashmir is slightly cheaper per night; but Ahmedabad–Srinagar flights cost roughly ₹7,000–9,000 more per person than Ahmedabad–Kochi in December, which cancels the difference. Expect a 5-night honeymoon in either destination to start from about ₹1,05,000–1,20,000 per couple with flights (indicative, varies by date and hotel category).

Weather on your dates: the real decider

Most Gujarati weddings fall between November and February, so this is the window that matters.

Kerala, November to February

The monsoon has finished by late October and the whole state turns green and dry. On the coast (Kochi, Alleppey, Kovalam) days are 28–32 °C with sea breeze; nights are a comfortable 23–24 °C. Munnar and Thekkady at 1,500–1,600 m are 10–22 °C, cool enough for a jacket at dawn, perfect for tea-garden walks. Humidity is at its yearly low. December 20 to January 5 is the busiest, costliest fortnight, with houseboat surcharges of 30–50 % and resort rates often double. The Sabarimala pilgrimage season (mid-November to mid-January) also fills Kottayam–Pathanamthitta roads, so plan transfers with time in hand.

Kashmir, November to February

November is autumn's tail end: chinar leaves turning red, clear skies, 5–15 °C in Srinagar, first snow in Gulmarg. December brings proper winter: Srinagar 0–10 °C by day and sub-zero nights, Gulmarg and Pahalgam −6 to 5 °C with snow on the ground most years by mid-month. Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest spell, starts on 21 December; this is when Dal Lake edges freeze and Gulmarg is at its white best, but fog can delay Srinagar flights by a few hours. January and February are the surest snow months. For couples who want snow without the extreme, the first three weeks of December and the last two weeks of February are the sweet spot.

Getting there from Ahmedabad

Kerala

Kochi (COK) is the honeymoon gateway, with daily non-stop flights from Ahmedabad: IndiGo 6E 6391 departs 17:05 and lands 19:30, and SpiceJet SG 685 departs 18:30 and lands 21:05. Return SG 686 leaves Kochi at 21:50 and reaches Ahmedabad just after midnight. In our December search, a return for two cost ₹36,000–38,500 including a checked bag each. Trivandrum (TRV) is the alternative if you end at Kovalam. For couples who prefer rail, the Ahmedabad–Ernakulam journey is 30–35 hours, realistic only if you have time and want to save about ₹25,000 per couple.

Kashmir

Srinagar (SXR) from Ahmedabad is usually one stop via Delhi or Chandigarh, taking 4.5 to 6.5 hours door to door. IndiGo runs a non-stop Srinagar–Ahmedabad flight (6E 6165, 15:20–17:35) on selected days, which is worth building your return around. December fares for two were ₹50,000–56,000 return in our search, so budget ₹25,000–28,000 per person. Book 6–8 weeks out for honeymoon dates, and always choose the earliest morning departure out of Srinagar in winter, because fog delays build through the afternoon.

What a 5-night honeymoon costs: Kerala vs Kashmir

These are indicative per-couple ranges for a private, customised trip with a car and driver, breakfast, one houseboat night and sightseeing. Flights are added on top using the December fares above. Peak Christmas–New Year dates can be 20–40 % higher.

Category (5N/6D) Kerala, land only Kashmir, land only
Standard (3-star, deluxe houseboat) from ₹65,000 from ₹55,000
Premium (4-star resorts, premium houseboat, candle-light dinner) from ₹95,000 from ₹80,000
Luxury (5-star or heritage, private pool villa / luxury houseboat) from ₹1,60,000 from ₹1,40,000

Add ₹36,000–38,500 (Kerala) or ₹50,000–56,000 (Kashmir) for two return flights in December, and the all-in standard honeymoon lands at roughly ₹1,05,000 for Kerala and ₹1,10,000 for Kashmir. In other words, pick on experience, not on price. Where Kashmir saves money is the hotel bill; where Kerala saves is the airfare and the absence of weather buffers.

Two cost notes couples often miss. In Kerala, a premium one-bedroom houseboat is ₹15,000–20,000 per night in season and includes lunch, dinner and breakfast; the deluxe class is ₹8,000–12,000. In Kashmir, the Gulmarg gondola is about ₹800 per person for Phase 1 and about ₹1,000 for Phase 2, booked online only through the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal, and Phase 2 sells out two to three days ahead in snow season. A Dal Lake shikara ride is ₹700–1,200 per boat per hour at official rates, and boatmen quote lower in winter.

Veg and Jain food: which is easier?

Kerala is easier for strict vegetarians, and both are workable for Jain food with planning. Kerala's everyday cooking already has a huge vegetarian side: appam with vegetable stew, puttu and kadala curry, avial, thoran, sambar, and the full sadya on a banana leaf. Houseboat cooks will happily do an all-veg menu if you tell the operator at booking, and we specify no onion-garlic for Jain couples in the booking note. Kochi, Munnar and Thekkady have Gujarati and Marwari restaurants, and most 4-star resorts run a Jain menu on request.

Kashmir's famous food is Wazwan, which is meat-heavy, but Srinagar's Boulevard Road and Dal Gate area has a cluster of pure-veg dhabas (Krishna Vaishno Dhaba, Vishal Vaishno Dhaba, Radha Ki Rasoi, Delhi Di Rasoi) that serve Punjabi and North Indian thalis, and a few in Gulmarg state they serve Jain food. Kashmiri Pandit cuisine also has excellent vegetarian dishes: dum aloo, nadru yakhni (lotus stem in yoghurt), haak (collard greens) and chaman (paneer). Pahalgam and Gulmarg have fewer options, so we arrange veg or Jain meals with the hotel in advance and carry theplas and dry snacks for long drives. Kahwa, the saffron-almond green tea, is vegetarian and the best thing to drink on a cold evening.

Romance factor: what you will actually do

Kerala

Mornings start late. In Munnar you walk through tea estates and sip cardamom tea at Top Station; in Thekkady you take a bamboo raft or spice-garden walk; the Alleppey houseboat moors by 5:30 pm and you eat dinner on the deck under fairy lights; Kovalam or Marari gives a beach sunset and a couple's Ayurvedic massage. The feel is private, slow and soft. The downside: Kerala is popular with families and groups in December, so choose resorts with adults-oriented settings or private pool villas.

Kashmir

Kashmir is cinematic. A shikara on Dal Lake at sunrise with mist on the water, a night in a carved-walnut houseboat with a kangri (fire-pot) in your lap, pony rides and snow fights in Pahalgam's Betaab Valley, the gondola up to Apharwat where the Pir Panjal range unfolds, and a saffron-and-walnut shopping afternoon in Srinagar. The feel is grand and adventurous. The downside: cold mornings, early sunsets around 5:30 pm, and the need to accept that one plan may shift because of weather.

Kerala honeymoon: 5-night sample plan

  1. Day 1 – Ahmedabad to Kochi, drive to Munnar (4 h). Evening flight 6E 6391 lands 19:30; stay overnight in Kochi, or if you take a morning connection, drive straight to Munnar past Cheeyappara waterfalls.
  2. Day 2 – Munnar. Tea Museum, Eravikulam National Park (Nilgiri tahr), Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point; evening at a tea-estate resort.
  3. Day 3 – Munnar to Thekkady (3 h). Periyar Lake boat ride, spice plantation walk, optional Kalaripayattu martial-arts show.
  4. Day 4 – Thekkady to Alleppey (4 h), houseboat. Check in around noon, cruise through Kuttanad villages, sunset on deck, dinner on board.
  5. Day 5 – Alleppey to Kochi (1.5 h) or Marari Beach. Fort Kochi walk, Chinese fishing nets, candle-light dinner; or a beach day at Marari.
  6. Day 6 – Fly home. SG 686 departs Kochi 21:50, giving you a free day for shopping on MG Road or a Kathakali show.

Kashmir honeymoon: 5-night sample plan

  1. Day 1 – Ahmedabad to Srinagar (via Delhi or Chandigarh). Arrive by afternoon, check into a Dal Lake houseboat, sunset shikara ride.
  2. Day 2 – Srinagar. Shankaracharya Temple, Nishat and Shalimar gardens (bare but beautiful in winter), old city walk, saffron and pashmina shopping; dinner at a pure-veg dhaba near Dal Gate.
  3. Day 3 – Srinagar to Gulmarg (2 h). Gondola Phase 1 and 2 (book both online in advance), snow play, sledging; overnight in Gulmarg if you want the snow-at-the-window experience.
  4. Day 4 – Gulmarg to Pahalgam (4 h). Stop at Avantipora ruins and saffron fields of Pampore; evening by the Lidder river.
  5. Day 5 – Pahalgam. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley by local taxi, pony ride to Baisaran meadow (weather permitting), bonfire night.
  6. Day 6 – Pahalgam to Srinagar (2.5 h), fly home. Choose an afternoon flight so morning fog has lifted; 6E 6165 to Ahmedabad at 15:20 on days it operates.

Packing in one line each: Kerala needs cottons, one light jacket for Munnar, swimwear and repellent; Kashmir needs thermals, a down jacket, waterproof shoes with grip, cap, gloves and sunglasses for snow glare. Neither destination needs a permit; carry a photo ID for check-in.

How we plan your honeymoon from Ahmedabad

Vibrant Holidays has planned honeymoons from our C G Road office for 12 years, and every trip is private and customised; there are no group departures or tour managers. We match the hotel category to your budget, build the itinerary around your wedding date, note veg or Jain meal needs with every hotel and houseboat, and keep a buffer day in Kashmir winter plans. Explore our Kerala tour packages from Ahmedabad and Kashmir tour packages from Ahmedabad, or browse all honeymoon packages. If snow in December is the plan, read our guide to Kashmir in December first, and if you are still weighing a beach honeymoon abroad, compare with our Bali honeymoon cost for a couple. Domestic trips need no visa or forex, but we do recommend travel insurance for Kashmir winter dates because of weather delays.

FAQ: Kerala vs Kashmir for honeymoon

Which is better for honeymoon, Kerala or Kashmir?

Kashmir is better if you want snow, mountain scenery and a dramatic trip between December and February. Kerala is better for warmth, privacy, a houseboat night and Ayurveda, and it is the safer choice if you dislike cold or travel between March and May. Costs are similar once flights from Ahmedabad are included.

Which is cheaper from Ahmedabad, Kerala or Kashmir?

Land packages are 10–15 % cheaper in Kashmir, but Ahmedabad–Srinagar flights cost about ₹7,000–9,000 more per person than Ahmedabad–Kochi in December. A standard 5-night honeymoon works out to roughly ₹1,05,000 per couple for Kerala and ₹1,10,000 for Kashmir, indicative and varying by date.

Is Kashmir safe and open for honeymoon in December?

Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam host thousands of couples every winter and hotels, houseboats and the gondola operate through December. The practical risks are weather related: snow can close the Gulmarg road for a few hours and fog can delay Srinagar flights, which is why we keep a buffer day and book afternoon departures.

Can we get Jain food in Kerala and Kashmir?

Yes, with notice. Kerala houseboats and resorts prepare no-onion-garlic menus if told at booking, and Kochi, Munnar and Thekkady have Gujarati restaurants. In Kashmir, Srinagar's Dal Gate area has pure-veg dhabas and some Gulmarg restaurants state they serve Jain food; for Pahalgam we pre-arrange meals with the hotel.

How many days are enough for a Kerala or Kashmir honeymoon?

Five nights is the comfortable minimum for both: Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey–Kochi in Kerala, or Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam in Kashmir. Add two nights for Kovalam or Marari beach in Kerala, or for Sonamarg (summer only) and a second Srinagar night in Kashmir.

Is a houseboat better in Kerala or Kashmir?

They are different experiences. A Kerala houseboat cruises the backwaters for a day and night with your own cook. A Kashmir houseboat is moored on Dal or Nigeen Lake, works like a floating heritage hotel with carved walnut interiors, and you use a shikara to come and go. Many couples do one night of each type on a combined trip across two seasons.
