Cheapest International Trips from India (2026 Cost Guide)

Twelve foreign trips that an Indian traveller can do for roughly ₹30,000 to ₹85,000 per person all-in – with the visa position for each, the months when fares fall, and where the hidden costs sit.

"Cheap" means different things on different websites. Some lists quote only the hotel rate, some quote a flight sale fare that existed for one afternoon, and some ignore the visa fee, the arrival levy and the airport transfer that together add ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 per person. For a real decision you need the whole bill: return economy flights from an Indian metro, four to six nights in a clean 3-star hotel on twin sharing, airport transfers, a few days of sightseeing and the entry paperwork.

That is what this guide prices. Below you will find a ranked table of the cheapest international trips from India with realistic per-person cost bands, a visa table showing exactly what an Indian passport needs as of October 2026, the cheapest months for each country, which Indian city gets the lowest fares to where, and a list of savings that actually work. Every country also gets a short "who it suits" note, because the cheapest trip is pointless if it is wrong for your family or your interests. Entry rules were checked on government and embassy sources and recent official announcements; rules change, and we check them again before you book.

Cheapest foreign trips from India, ranked by total cost

Bands are per person on twin sharing, for the trip lengths shown, and include return economy airfare from a well-connected Indian metro (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru or Ahmedabad), 3-star or good guesthouse stays with breakfast, airport transfers, core sightseeing on a shared or private basis, and visa or permit fees. They exclude most lunches and dinners, shopping, optional activities and travel insurance. The lower figure is an off-season booking made six to eight weeks ahead; the upper figure is a normal season week.

Country notes: what the money buys and who each trip suits

Nepal – the lowest bill, the most flexible

Two nights in Kathmandu for Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur, then three in Pokhara for the lakeside, Sarangkot sunrise and the Annapurna views. Hotels are inexpensive, vegetarian food is everywhere and the Indian rupee is widely accepted in ₹100 notes (higher denominations are not). Suits: first-time travellers abroad, pilgrims, seniors, and anyone who wants to test international travel without a visa. Skip it if you want beaches or nightlife.

Thailand – the most trip for the least effort

Bangkok and Pattaya on a short break, or Phuket and Krabi if you can add two nights. Hotel rates are low, transfers are short and the shopping and street food are cheaper than in Indian metros. Pure-veg and Jain meals need some planning outside the main areas. Suits: friend groups, young couples, families with children. Skip it if you dislike crowds in December.

Sri Lanka – a short hop with variety

Tea country, a hill train, Buddhist sites and a beach in one week. The free ETA has removed the last fee. Ground transport is by private car, which keeps costs higher than Nepal. Suits: South Indian travellers (flights from Chennai, Kochi and Bengaluru are short and cheap), families and anyone following the Ramayana trail.

Malaysia – an easy city break

Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves and the Genting Highlands cable car, with Langkawi if the budget stretches. Low-cost carriers keep fares down from Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Tiruchirappalli. Suits: families, first-time international travellers and shoppers.

Vietnam – the best value for a full week

Hotel, food and domestic flight costs are among the lowest in Asia, so a seven-night trip costs little more than five nights elsewhere. Ha Long Bay cruises, Hoi An's old town and the Ba Na Hills are the big draws. Suits: couples and curious travellers who want something less familiar than Thailand. Vegetarian travellers should expect to rely on Indian restaurants in the cities.

Dubai – cheap only in certain months

From June to August the hotels drop sharply, and the malls, aquariums and indoor parks make the heat manageable. In December the same room can cost three times as much. Suits: families from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala who have short, frequent flights, and shoppers.

Bhutan – affordable if you travel smart

The SDF of ₹1,200 per night is modest for Indians, but car hire and hotels are not cheap. Flying to Bagdogra and driving in through Phuentsholing is usually far cheaper than flying to Paro. Suits: seniors, nature lovers and families who prefer quiet sightseeing. See our Bhutan packages.

Bali – long flight, low daily spend

Private pool villas in Ubud can cost less than a standard Goa resort in peak season. The longer flight (usually one connection) is the main cost. Suits: couples and friends who want villas, rice terraces and cafés.

Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan – the new budget options

Almaty and Baku became popular because they feel unlike anywhere else on this list – mountains, European-style boulevards, snow in winter – and both are within about four hours of Delhi on direct flights. Ground costs are moderate. Suits: young travellers, couples and anyone who has already done Thailand and Dubai.

Singapore and the Maldives – the stretch picks

Neither is cheap on the ground. Singapore becomes affordable when airfare sales line up, and a guesthouse stay on a Maldives local island costs a fraction of a resort, but local islands have no alcohol, dress rules on public beaches and fewer facilities. Choose them for a specific reason, not as default budget trips.

Cheapest months to travel, country by country

Airfare from India peaks around Diwali, Christmas–New Year and the May school holidays, regardless of the destination's weather. The cheapest windows below avoid both the Indian peaks and the destination's own high season.

Which Indian city gets the cheapest fares to where

Your departure airport changes the ranking more than most people expect. Flying out of a hub with direct budget-airline routes can save ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 per person compared with a connecting itinerary.

Departure cityCheapest short-haul tripsTypical flight time
DelhiKathmandu, Almaty, Baku, BangkokAbout 1.5 hours to Kathmandu; about 3.5 – 4.5 hours to Almaty, Baku and Bangkok
MumbaiDubai, Bangkok, ColomboAbout 3 hours to Dubai; 4 – 4.5 hours to Bangkok
AhmedabadDubai, Bangkok, SingaporeAbout 3 hours to Dubai; about 4.5 hours to Bangkok
KolkataBangkok, Paro or Bagdogra for Bhutan, Kathmandu, Kuala LumpurAbout 2.5 hours to Bangkok
Chennai, Kochi, BengaluruColombo, Kuala Lumpur, Malé, SingaporeAbout 1.5 hours to Colombo; 4 hours to Kuala Lumpur
HyderabadDubai, Bangkok, Kuala LumpurAbout 3.5 – 4 hours

If your city has no direct route, it is often cheaper to take a domestic flight or an overnight train to the hub than to buy a through-ticket with a connection. We price both options for you.

Money-saving tips that actually work

  1. Book flights six to ten weeks ahead for short-haul Asia, and three to four months ahead if your dates touch Diwali or Christmas. Last-minute "deals" from India are rare in peak weeks.
  2. Fly midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are commonly cheaper than Friday evenings by a meaningful margin.
  3. Choose visa-free or free-permit countries. Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives save you visa fees and agent charges altogether.
  4. Price the baggage. Low-cost carriers sell fares with only cabin bags. Adding 15–20 kg each way can wipe out the saving; compare with a full-service fare.
  5. Stay central, not cheap-and-far. A slightly dearer hotel near the metro or the beach saves taxi money every day.
  6. Use shared transfers for airports, private cars for sightseeing days. That mix balances cost and comfort for families.
  7. Take a forex card or an international debit card with low markups, and carry some US dollars for countries like Vietnam and Cambodia. Airport exchange counters give the worst rates.
  8. Combine two cheap countries on one ticket – Thailand with Cambodia, Malaysia with Singapore, Azerbaijan with Georgia – when time allows. The second country adds far less than a separate trip.
  9. Buy travel insurance anyway. A single doctor visit in Bangkok or Dubai can cost more than the policy.

Sample budgets: three real-world cases

Couple from Delhi, 5 nights in Nepal, March

Return flights about ₹12,000 – 16,000 each, 3-star hotels ₹2,500 – 4,000 per room per night, a private car with driver for Kathmandu sightseeing and the Pokhara road transfer, and entry tickets. Total around ₹32,000 – 42,000 per person.

Family of four from Mumbai, 4 nights in Thailand, August

Return flights about ₹18,000 – 24,000 per person in the low season, a family room in Pattaya and Bangkok, Coral Island trip, Safari World and transfers. Total about ₹38,000 – 50,000 per adult, slightly less for children sharing beds.

Two friends from Bengaluru, 6 nights in Sri Lanka, September

Short flight to Colombo, no visa fee, a private car for Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and the south coast, 3-star hotels. Total around ₹48,000 – 62,000 per person.

All three are private trips: your own dates, your own car and driver, with veg or Jain meals requested in advance and confirmed in writing.

Cheapest International Trips from India: FAQs

Which is the cheapest country to visit from India?

Nepal is the cheapest international trip for most Indians. There is no visa, flights from Delhi and Kolkata are short, and hotels and food are inexpensive. A five-night Kathmandu and Pokhara trip costs roughly ₹28,000 to ₹45,000 per person including flights. Travelling overland via Gorakhpur or Raxaul reduces the cost further.

Which foreign trip can I do under ₹50,000?

Nepal, Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Genting) and Sri Lanka can all be done for under ₹50,000 per person including return flights, if you travel outside Diwali, Christmas and May and book six to eight weeks ahead. Vietnam and Dubai are possible near that figure in their low seasons.

Is Thailand visa-free for Indians in 2026?

Yes. From 15 September 2026 Indian tourists can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days, down from the earlier 60 days. You must fill in the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing and carry a return ticket and proof of funds. This is as of October 2026.

Is Sri Lanka visa free for Indians?

Not exactly visa-free, but free of charge. Since 25 May 2026 Indian nationals receive the 30-day tourist ETA without a fee. You still have to apply online before travel and receive approval. Avoid unofficial websites that charge for the free ETA. Rules change, so we check again before you book.

What is the cheapest international trip for a couple from India?

For a couple, Thailand and Vietnam give the most for the money: low hotel rates, cheap food and plenty of beaches. Expect ₹75,000 to ₹1,30,000 for two people for five or six nights including flights. Nepal is cheaper, but couples looking for beaches usually prefer Thailand.

When are international flights from India cheapest?

Fares are usually lowest from mid-January to March (outside Holi and long weekends), and again from July to September, when Indian schools are in session and many destinations are in their low season. Diwali, Christmas–New Year and the May school vacation are the most expensive periods to fly out of India.

Do Indians need a visa for Malaysia?

Not at present. Malaysia allows Indian citizens a 30-day visa-free stay for tourism under a scheme currently valid until 31 December 2026. You must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within three days before arrival. For trips in 2027, wait for the extension notice before buying non-refundable tickets.

How much does a Bhutan trip cost for Indians?

Indians pay a Sustainable Development Fee of ₹1,200 per adult per night, with half rate for children aged six to twelve. Including flights or the road route from Bagdogra, hotels and a private car, five nights cost roughly ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 per person. Entering by road through Phuentsholing is usually the cheaper option.

Is Dubai cheap for Indians?

Dubai can be affordable in June, July and August, when hotels cut rates sharply; a four-night trip then costs around ₹45,000 to ₹55,000 per person including flights and the e-visa. From November to March prices rise steeply. Flights from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kerala are short, which keeps airfare reasonable.

Which countries can Indians visit without a visa cheaply?

The cheapest no-visa options are Nepal, Bhutan (with the nightly SDF), Thailand for up to 30 days, Malaysia for up to 30 days, Kazakhstan for up to 14 days with QazETA registration, and the Maldives with a free visa on arrival. Sri Lanka requires an ETA, but it is now free for Indians.

Is Vietnam cheaper than Thailand?

On the ground, yes: hotels, food and domestic flights in Vietnam are generally cheaper than in Thailand. Airfare from India can be slightly higher and Indians need an e-visa costing USD 25. For a short four-night trip Thailand usually wins; for a week or longer Vietnam often works out cheaper.

How can I save money on my first international trip?

Pick a visa-free or free-permit country, travel outside Indian holiday peaks, book flights six to ten weeks ahead, fly midweek and compare baggage costs on low-cost airlines. Stay centrally to save on taxis, use a low-markup forex card and take travel insurance, because a medical bill abroad costs far more than the policy.
