Goa in December is the one month when the beaches, the weather and the calendar all line up, which is exactly why it is also the month when a last-minute plan from Ahmedabad goes wrong: the 4 am IndiGo is full, the Candolim hotel you liked is quoting double, and the shack you remember from a March trip has a queue. This guide is written for Gujarat travellers, with what December actually feels like, what has changed for 2026 (Sunburn is no longer in Goa), the indicative flight and hotel costs we are seeing, what pure-veg and Jain families should know, and a short list of what to book in which order.
Goa weather in December: what the numbers mean on the beach
December is the driest and most comfortable month of the Goa year. Daytime highs sit around 31–32°C, nights drop to about 20°C, the sea stays around 28°C and rain is close to nil, with roughly ten hours of sunshine a day (as of October 2026, long-term averages). Humidity is lower than in October or February, so a 3 pm walk on Candolim does not feel like a Mumbai afternoon.
Two practical consequences for an Ahmedabad family. First, early mornings and evenings are the best beach hours; between 11 am and 3 pm the sand is hot and children tire fast, so plan the fort, the church or the spice farm for that slot. Second, the sea is calm and the water-sports operators are all running, which is not the case in monsoon. There is no need for a jacket at any point, but a light stole helps on the 4 am Ahmedabad departure and on a late ferry crossing.
Three Decembers in one month: pick your window
Travellers say "Goa in December" as if it were one thing. It is three different trips, and the price and crowd gap between them is large.
1–20 December: the quiet premium window
Weather is already perfect, but schools in Gujarat are open after the Diwali vacation (5–25 November 2026) and the Christmas crowd has not arrived. This is the window we recommend to couples, senior parents and anyone who wants Goa without a queue. The Serendipity Arts Festival runs in Panjim from 13 to 20 December 2026 (11th edition; dates announced by the organisers in May 2026), with exhibitions, music and theatre across the city's heritage venues. For a couple it is the best fortnight of the year to walk Fontainhas in the evening.
21–26 December: Christmas week
Hotels fill from the 22nd. Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at the Panjim church (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) and at the Old Goa churches is open to everyone and is worth attending even if you are only going for the carols and the lit-up façades; dress modestly and reach early, because the squares are full by 11 pm. Markets at Anjuna and Arpora run late into the night in this week.
27 December – 2 January: New Year week
This is peak Goa. Flights from Ahmedabad and hotel rates are at their highest, beaches at Baga, Calangute and Anjuna are crowded with groups from across India, and the Gujarat crowd is large enough that you will hear Gujarati in every second shack. If New Year on a Goa beach is the point of the trip, book now; if it is not, come in the first half of the month and save a third.
What has changed for December 2026: Sunburn and the big parties
A lot of older guides still sell December in Goa around Sunburn. As of October 2026, the Sunburn Festival 2026 is scheduled for 18–19 December at Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai, not Goa; the organisers' own event page lists the Mumbai venue. Goa's December 2025 season also saw most of the large 31 December music festivals cancelled over music-rights costs and permits, and local trade reports said hotel rates were cut by 10–15% as a result, with footfall down from the previous year.
For a family or a couple from Ahmedabad this is good news, not bad. The beaches are calmer, the hotel pricing is more negotiable than it was in 2023–24, and New Year's Eve is now mostly resort dinners, shack parties and the fireworks that Baga, Calangute and Palolem still put on. If your group wants a ticketed EDM night, plan it as a Mumbai stop rather than expecting it in Goa.
Flights from Ahmedabad in December: fares and which airport
Ahmedabad has non-stop flights to both Goa airports: Dabolim (GOI) in the south-centre and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX) in the north. Flight time is about 1 hour 40 minutes. Indicative return fares we checked on 29 October 2026 for two adults with checked bags, non-stop, economy:
| Travel window | Route | Indicative return fare, 2 adults* |
|---|---|---|
| 9–19 December | AMD–Dabolim (GOI) | from ₹29,800 (about ₹15,000 per person) |
| 12–19 December | AMD–Mopa (GOX) | from ₹34,800 (about ₹17,400 per person) |
| 26 December – 4 January | AMD–Dabolim (GOI) | from ₹42,900 (about ₹21,500 per person) |
*Indicative fares seen on a flight-search engine on 29 October 2026; they change daily and rise as seats sell. Treat them as a planning range, not a quote.
Choose the airport by your hotel, not by the fare. Mopa is the shorter transfer for Arambol, Morjim, Ashvem, Mandrem and the Anjuna–Vagator belt (roughly 35–45 minutes). Dabolim is closer to Candolim–Calangute–Baga (about 45 minutes to an hour) and much closer to South Goa stays at Colva, Benaulim, Cavelossim and Palolem. A Mopa landing with a Palolem hotel means two hours on the road at the start and the end of the trip, which is the single most common planning mistake we fix for Ahmedabad families.
The 4 am Ahmedabad departure is the cheapest on most dates and lands you in Goa before 6 am, which gives you a full first day but a tired one; for senior parents we usually book the evening departure and keep day one light. If you would rather go by train, the Ahmedabad–Madgaon services take 18–20 hours and are a sensible option for a large family group in the first half of December when berths are still available; by the 20th they are not.
Hotel costs in December: North vs South, and what a week really costs
Indicative December room rates in Goa, per night for a double room with breakfast, as of October 2026, vary by date and rise sharply from 22 December. A clean 3-star in Calangute, Candolim or Colva starts from about ₹4,500–7,000 in the first half of the month and ₹7,000–12,000 in Christmas–New Year week. A 4-star resort with a pool runs ₹9,000–16,000 early in the month and ₹15,000–25,000 at New Year. Five-star beach resorts at Cavelossim, Candolim or Arossim start around ₹20,000 and can cross ₹40,000 a night between 28 December and 1 January, and most of them insist on a compulsory gala-dinner charge on the 24th and 31st, often ₹5,000–10,000 per adult, so ask before you book.
For a couple from Ahmedabad, a 4-night, 5-day December trip in a good 3-star with flights, breakfast, airport transfers and a scooter or car for two days works out to roughly ₹45,000–60,000 for two in the first half of the month, and ₹65,000–85,000 for two in New Year week. A family of four in two rooms or a family suite, with a private car for the whole stay, should budget about ₹85,000–1,20,000 early in the month and ₹1,20,000–1,60,000 at New Year. These are planning ranges from the trips we have put together this season, not package prices; the Goa tour packages from Ahmedabad page has the current itineraries and starting prices.
Getting around: taxis, scooters and the app question
As of October 2026, Ola and Uber do not operate in Goa; the state has kept outside aggregators out. The two app services that do run are GoaMiles (linked to Goa Tourism, serving both airports) and the state's Goa Taxi App, together covering a few thousand of the state's tourist taxis. Both are reliable from the airports; inside the beach belts you will still be quoted flat fares by stand taxis, and in December those fares go up with demand. Our working rule for families: book a private car with driver for the full stay (about ₹2,500–3,500 a day for an 8-hour, 80-km package in December), because three or four point-to-point taxi rides a day cost more and waste time. Couples who ride comfortably rent a scooter at ₹400–600 a day; carry a valid two-wheeler licence, wear the helmet, and do not ride after the shack dinner.
Veg, Jain and Gujarati food in Goa in December
Goa is far more vegetarian-friendly than its party image suggests, and December is the easiest month because every kitchen is open. In the Calangute–Candolim–Baga belt there are pure-veg Gujarati and Rajasthani thali houses on the main road, and most beach shacks will do a veg thali, paneer dishes, dal-rice and Maggi without being asked twice. For strict Jain food, say so at booking: a Jain meal without onion and garlic is routine in hotels used to Gujarati guests, but a shack cook needs 15 minutes' notice. South Goa has fewer options, so for Jain families staying at Colva, Benaulim or Cavelossim we usually arrange breakfast and dinner at the resort and keep lunch flexible.
Two Goan vegetarian dishes worth ordering: a Goan veg xacuti or mushroom xacuti (a coconut-and-spice curry, ask for it mild), and bebinca, the layered coconut-egg dessert; most bakeries also sell eggless versions in December. Christmas sweets (kulkuls, doce, neureos) appear in Panjim and Margao shops from mid-December and travel well as gifts back to Ahmedabad.
A 5-day December plan that avoids the crowds
This is the shape we use for first-time December visitors from Ahmedabad: North Goa beaches at the start while you have energy, Old Goa and Panjim in the middle, and a calmer South Goa finish.
- Day 1 – Arrive, Candolim. Land at Dabolim, check in at Candolim or Sinquerim, late lunch, sunset at Sinquerim beach below Fort Aguada.
- Day 2 – North beaches. Morning water sports at Baga or Calangute before 11 am (parasailing, jet ski and banana boat are all running in December), afternoon rest, evening at Anjuna or Vagator for the cliff sunset; Saturday night market at Arpora if your dates allow.
- Day 3 – Old Goa and Panjim. Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral in the morning (go before 10 am in Christmas week), lunch in Panjim, an evening walk through the painted lanes of Fontainhas, and in the 13–20 December window the Serendipity Arts Festival venues along the riverfront.
- Day 4 – Spice farm and South Goa. Drive to a spice plantation near Ponda for a guided walk and a Goan veg lunch, then check in at Colva, Benaulim or Palolem for a quieter last night.
- Day 5 – Beach morning and depart. Early beach, dolphin boat from Palolem or Cavelossim if the sea is flat, and an afternoon flight home from Dabolim.
Families with children under eight should swap the Day 2 water sports for the morning at Calangute's calmer southern end and keep Day 4's spice farm, which children enjoy more than another beach. Senior parents do well with the same plan at a slower pace, with Day 3 split into two half-days.
Book in this order
For December, the order matters more than the destination. Book the Ahmedabad–Goa flights first, because the direct flights sell out and the alternative is a one-stop via Mumbai that doubles the day. Book the hotel second, and for Christmas–New Year week do it before mid-November; by early December the good 3-stars in Candolim and Colva are either full or holding only their highest rate. Book the New Year's Eve dinner or party third if you want one, because resorts cap numbers. Everything else, including water sports, spice farm, cruise and the Old Goa visit, can be booked on arrival. Travel insurance for a domestic trip is optional, but for senior parents we recommend it; the travel insurance page explains what a short domestic policy covers.
Who should pick Goa in December, and who should not
Pick Goa in December if you want warm beach weather without rain, a short direct flight from Ahmedabad, and a trip that works for three generations at once. Couples get the best of it in the first three weeks; families get it any time the school calendar allows; senior parents are most comfortable in the first fortnight. Skip Goa in December if your idea of Goa is the big-festival New Year scene (that has mostly moved or shrunk), if you want empty beaches (come in February–March instead), or if the budget is tight and the dates are fixed to New Year week, when a 4-night Kerala trip at the same price buys a houseboat night and cooler weather; the weekend getaways from Ahmedabad guide covers the shorter alternatives.
Goa in December: FAQs
Is December a good time to visit Goa?
Yes. It is the driest, sunniest and most comfortable month, with highs near 32°C, nights around 20°C and almost no rain. It is also the most crowded and the most expensive month in Christmas–New Year week, so the first three weeks are the better value.
Is Sunburn 2026 in Goa?
No. As of October 2026, Sunburn Festival 2026 is scheduled for 18–19 December at Mahalaxmi Race Course, Mumbai, according to the organisers' event page. Check the official site before planning around it.
How much does a Goa trip from Ahmedabad cost in December?
For a couple, a 4-night trip with flights, a 3-star hotel, breakfast and local transport runs roughly ₹45,000–60,000 for two in early December and ₹65,000–85,000 in New Year week. A family of four should budget about ₹85,000–1,20,000 early in the month and ₹1,20,000–1,60,000 at New Year. All figures are indicative and vary by date and hotel.
Which airport should I fly into from Ahmedabad: Dabolim or Mopa?
Choose by your hotel. Mopa (GOX) is closer to Arambol, Morjim, Anjuna and Vagator; Dabolim (GOI) is closer to Candolim–Baga and much closer to all South Goa beaches. Dabolim fares from Ahmedabad were also lower on the mid-December dates we checked.
Is pure veg and Jain food available in Goa?
Yes, especially in North Goa, where Gujarati and Rajasthani thali restaurants and veg-friendly shacks are common. Jain meals are easy in hotels if requested at booking; in South Goa, arrange them at the resort.
Do Ola and Uber work in Goa?
No, as of October 2026. Use GoaMiles or the Goa Taxi App from the airports, or book a private car with driver for the stay, which is cheaper for families than repeated taxi rides.
