If you have been dreaming of the Kandy to Ella train — the blue carriages, the tea gardens, the Nine Arch Bridge — here is the honest status first: as of October 2026 the train does not run from Kandy. Cyclone Ditwah damaged long stretches of Sri Lanka's upcountry line at the end of 2025, and only the Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section has reopened (on 20 June 2026). The good news is that this reopened section is the most scenic part of the whole route, and with a private driver it fits neatly into a Sri Lanka trip from Ahmedabad. This guide covers what is running, timings, fares in rupees, the 30-day booking rule, which side to sit, and how we plan it for Gujarati families, couples and parents.
Kandy to Ella train status as of October 2026
The Kandy–Ella journey runs over Sri Lanka Railways' Main Line. After the cyclone, the line is being rebuilt in pieces, and the status changes almost weekly. This is what we verified at the end of October 2026:
| Section | Status (late Oct 2026) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo Fort – Peradeniya / Kandy | Closed (reopened 2 Oct, suspended again 25 Oct after bad weather; Peradeniya bridge under rebuild) | Colombo to Kandy is by road (about 3–3.5 hours) |
| Kandy – Hatton – Nanu Oya | Closed for cyclone repairs | Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is by road (about 3 hours) |
| Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla | Open since 20 June 2026 | The scenic ride you came for: about 2 h 25 min |
Engineers quoted a December 2026 target for the Nanu Oya–Great Western stretch, which would reconnect the hill line, but no through timetable has been announced. Our planning rule is simple: for trips until the end of December 2026, assume you will board at Nanu Oya. If the full line reopens before your date, we switch you to the longer ride at no extra cost.
How the scenic ride works now: Nanu Oya to Ella
Nanu Oya is the railway station for Nuwara Eliya, about 8 km (20–25 minutes) below the town. Trains run daily in both directions on the reopened section (timings as published for 30 October 2026 — confirm the week you travel):
- Train 1005 – Nanu Oya 09:00 → Ella 11:25 (continues to Badulla). The one we recommend: morning light, clearer skies, and you reach Ella in time for lunch.
- Train 1015 – Nanu Oya 14:30 → Ella 16:55. Softer afternoon light, but mist and rain are more likely after 2 pm in the hills.
- Return direction: Ella 09:52 and 15:52 to Nanu Oya, useful if you are doing the ride the other way round.
Delays of 15–30 minutes are normal, so we never put a tight connection after the train. The route runs through Ambewela's dairy country, climbs to Pattipola (Sri Lanka's highest station, roughly 1,900 m, where it is often jacket-cold), then drops past Haputale's ridge-top views and the tea estates before Ella.
The Nine Arch Bridge is after Ella, not before it
This catches many first-timers. Coming from Nanu Oya, the train stops at Ella first and crosses the Nine Arch Bridge a few minutes later, between Ella and Demodara. If you get off at Ella you will not cross the bridge. Two fixes: stay on one more stop to Demodara (about 15 minutes, the train also loops under itself there) and take a 3 km tuk-tuk back to Ella for a few hundred rupees; or get off at Ella and walk to the bridge viewpoint the next morning (a 30–40 minute walk, or a short tuk-tuk ride) to photograph a train crossing. For families with seniors we usually do the second, because the walk can be done at an easy pace and the viewpoint cafés have seating.
Tickets and fares in rupees
Sri Lanka Railways sells two kinds of tickets on this line, and the difference matters for Indian travellers used to IRCTC:
- Unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day. Nanu Oya–Ella is listed at around LKR 300 in second class and LKR 160 in third class (about ₹85 and ₹45 at roughly ₹1 = LKR 3.5, as of October 2026). Cheap, but no seat is guaranteed; on busy days people stand for the whole ride.
- Reserved seats (first-class observation saloon, reserved second and third class, and the tourist-oriented "Ella Odyssey" services) open for booking 30 days before travel. Reserved fares on the reopened section were quoted at roughly LKR 3,000–5,000 per person (about ₹850–1,450) in mid-2026; they vary by class and service, so treat these as indicative and check the exact fare when the date opens.
The practical problem: the online reservation portal needs a local mobile number for its OTP, and in season the reserved coaches sell out within hours of release. Local agents and hotels charge LKR 500–1,000 per ticket to queue for you. When Vibrant plans your trip, our Sri Lanka partner books your reserved seats on the morning they open and sends the e-ticket on WhatsApp, so you only need to turn up 30 minutes before departure with your passport.
If reserved seats are gone, do not cancel the ride. Our drivers reach Nanu Oya an hour early, buy second-class unreserved tickets, and get you on the platform before the crowd; a 2 h 25 min ride standing by an open door is still one of the best things you will do in Sri Lanka, though we avoid this with grandparents.
Which side to sit (and the open-door photo)
From Nanu Oya towards Ella, sit on the left side for the valley views and the tea estates; on the way back from Ella, sit on the right. The famous "hanging out of the door" photo is possible in second and third class, where doors stay open; first-class observation saloons have fixed windows and air-conditioning, so you get the big rear window instead. For a honeymoon couple we book second class reserved — the best mix of views and comfort. For parents above 65 we book first class, because the seats are wider and the carriage stays calm.
Tips for Gujarati families, seniors and Jain travellers
Food on board: there is no catering. Vendors walk through selling wade (fried lentil snacks, usually veg but fried in shared oil) and tea. Carry theplas, khakhra and fruit from Nuwara Eliya; our drivers can pick up a packed pure-veg or Jain breakfast from the hotel before the 09:00 train. Bottled water and tissues are a must — the toilets are basic.
Cold start: Nanu Oya and Pattipola sit above 1,800 m. A 9 am departure in December–January means 10–14 °C on the platform. A light jacket and a shawl for seniors is enough; by Ella it is warm again.
Luggage: this is where a private trip beats a group tour. Your bags go in the car with the driver, who drives from Nuwara Eliya to Ella (about 2 hours) and meets you at Ella station. You carry only a day bag, which makes the open-door ride and the station steps easy for parents.
Mobility: platforms are low and carriage steps are steep. If someone in the family uses a walking stick, tell us in advance; we book first class, ask for a seat nearest the door, and keep the driver at the platform to help with boarding.
Kids: children love the ride, but keep them seated near the window rather than at the open door. The 2 h 25 min length is just right — the full Kandy–Ella run, when it returns, is nearly 7 hours and we often advise families to do only part of it anyway.
Getting there from Ahmedabad and fitting the train into your trip
Colombo is a short hop from Ahmedabad. For mid-December 2026 dates we found return fares from about ₹41,000–44,000 per person (two adults travelling together, economy, as of October 2026; prices vary by date): FitsAir flies non-stop AMD 02:45 → CMB 05:45, returning CMB 22:30 → AMD 01:45, and one-stop options via Chennai on Akasa + SriLankan land around 5 pm. Indians need an Sri Lanka ETA applied for online before flying; we handle the application with your trip, but approval is always the authority's decision.
Here is the 6-night plan we are using for December 2026 and January 2027 departures while the Kandy line is shut:
- Day 1 – Colombo → Kandy: land early on the non-stop, drive to Kandy via Pinnawala elephant orphanage; evening at the Temple of the Tooth.
- Day 2 – Kandy: Peradeniya botanical gardens, Kandy Lake, a Gujarati thali dinner (Kandy has pure-veg Indian restaurants near the lake).
- Day 3 – Kandy → Nuwara Eliya by road: about 3 hours with stops at Ramboda Falls and a tea factory; overnight in Nuwara Eliya, the "Little England" of Sri Lanka.
- Day 4 – The train: 09:00 Nanu Oya → 11:25 Ella. Driver meets you with the bags. Afternoon Little Adam's Peak (an easy 45-minute climb) and Nine Arch Bridge at sunset.
- Day 5 – Ella → South coast: drive down via Ravana Falls to Bentota or Mirissa (4–5 hours), with a Yala or Udawalawe safari as an option for families.
- Day 6 – Beach: Bentota river safari, turtle hatchery, or simply the beach.
- Day 7 – Colombo departure: Galle Face and shopping before the night flight home.
Couples often swap the beach nights for a private villa; parents travelling with grandparents often drop the safari and add a night in Kandy. Everything is private and customised — no fixed departures, no tour manager — so the train day is built around the 09:00 departure and your pace. Package ideas and 2026 prices are on our Sri Lanka tour packages from Ahmedabad page, and the family holiday packages page shows how we pace trips for three generations.
When the full Kandy to Ella line reopens
Once the Hatton–Nanu Oya and Kandy sections are back, the classic ride returns: the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains leaving Kandy in the morning and reaching Ella about 6–7 hours later, with reserved first, second and third class and the observation car on selected services. The same 30-day booking rule applies, and seats on the morning trains sell out even faster than Nanu Oya–Ella ones do today. For that version, sit on the right side from Kandy. We will update this page when a through timetable is published; until then, treat any website still showing Kandy departure times as out of date.
Before you go: three small things
Carry Sri Lankan rupees in cash — Nanu Oya has no reliable ATM, and the nearest ones are in Nuwara Eliya; we arrange forex for your trip before you fly. Buy travel insurance that covers trip delays, because weather can suspend hill-country trains at short notice, as it did on 25 October 2026. And keep the train day in the middle of your itinerary, never on the day before a flight.
FAQ: Kandy to Ella train
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in 2026?
Not from Kandy. As of October 2026 only the Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section is open (since 20 June 2026). You reach Nanu Oya from Kandy by road in about 3 hours and take the train from there. Engineers have targeted December 2026 for the next section, but no date is confirmed.
How long is the Nanu Oya to Ella train?
About 2 hours 25 minutes on the timetable (09:00–11:25 or 14:30–16:55), often 15–30 minutes more in practice.
How far in advance should I book the Ella train?
Reserved seats open exactly 30 days before the travel date and sell out within hours in December–January and April. Ask us to book on the opening day. Unreserved second- and third-class tickets are sold at the station on the day.
Which class is best for a family with elderly parents?
First class (observation saloon or air-conditioned reserved) for comfort and calm; second class reserved if parents are fit and want the open-door experience. We avoid unreserved travel with seniors.
Which side should we sit on?
Left side from Nanu Oya to Ella, right side from Ella back to Nanu Oya. Once the full line reopens, sit on the right side from Kandy.
Is vegetarian or Jain food available on the train?
No proper meals are served; only tea and fried snacks from vendors. Carry food from the hotel — we arrange packed pure-veg or Jain breakfasts for the morning train.
