Alleppey Vs Kumarakom Houseboat: Which To Book?

Alleppey and Kumarakom sit only about 16 km apart on the same Vembanad backwater system, yet a houseboat night in each feels different. Alleppey gives you the narrow canals, paddy fields and village life that the Kerala photos promise, with the biggest choice of boats at every price. Kumarakom gives you open lake water, a bird sanctuary and resort-style stays with fewer, mostly premium boats. This guide compares the two on scenery, crowds, cost, food and ease of reach from Ahmedabad, so you can decide which one to book, or how to combine both in one trip.

Short answer: book Alleppey if you want the classic canal cruise, a wide choice of boats and the lowest price per night. Book Kumarakom if you want quiet lake views, a luxury resort night and birdwatching, and your budget is higher. Many of the Gujarati families and couples we plan for take one houseboat night from Alleppey and one resort night in Kumarakom, which gives both experiences in two days.

Alleppey vs Kumarakom at a glance

What you compare Alleppey (Alappuzha) Kumarakom
Water you cruise on Punnamada Lake plus a dense network of canals through Kuttanad paddy fields and villages Eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, Kerala's largest lake; open water, inlets near the bird sanctuary
Scenery Close-up village life, coconut groves, toddy shops, children waving from the bank Wide horizons, sunsets over the lake, Chinese fishing nets, herons and kingfishers
Crowds (Oct–Feb) Busy; boats queue on the main channel at noon and anchor in clusters at night Quiet; far fewer boats, so you anchor alone
Number of boats Largest fleet in Kerala, from basic to ultra-luxury Limited fleet, mostly premium and luxury
Private overnight boat, 1 bedroom (as of November 2026) From about ₹7,000–10,000 deluxe, ₹12,000–15,000 premium, ₹18,000–25,000+ luxury From about ₹10,000–20,000 premium, ₹20,000–50,000+ luxury; few budget boats
Resort or hotel night Wide range from about ₹3,000 upwards Mostly lake resorts from about ₹12,000 upwards
From Kochi airport About 85 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by road About 100 km via Kottayam, 2.5 to 3 hours
Nearest railway station Alappuzha (ALLP), in town Kottayam (KTYM), about 15 km
Best for First-timers, families, groups, budget to mid-range Honeymoon couples, seniors, luxury travellers, birdwatchers

Prices are indicative, quoted by operators as "from" rates, and move with the date. The same boat can cost up to double between 20 December and the first week of January, and 20–50 percent more around Onam, Diwali and Christmas. June to September monsoon rates run 15–20 percent lower.

Alleppey: the canal cruise everyone pictures

Alleppey's boats leave from the Punnamada finishing point and the nearby jetties around noon, cross the lake and then turn into the canals of Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala where fields lie below the water level behind bunds. This is where the famous scenes happen: a church spire over a coconut grove, women washing steel vessels on the ghat steps, a school boat ferrying children home. The standard overnight cruise runs about five to six hours on day one, anchors by around 5:30 pm as the rules require, and does a short one-hour cruise after breakfast before check-out at 9 am.

The strength of Alleppey is choice. There are one-bedroom boats for a couple, two- and three-bedroom boats for a family of four to six, and bigger boats for a joint family of ten or twelve. Categories matter more than the brand name: a deluxe boat usually has air-conditioned bedrooms only at night (around 9 pm to 6 am) with an open-sided lounge; a premium boat runs the bedroom AC full time and often has a glass-enclosed, air-conditioned dining area; a luxury boat adds an upper deck, bigger bathrooms and sometimes a jacuzzi. For a May or October trip, when the backwaters are humid, the full-time AC of a premium boat is worth the extra ₹4,000–5,000 a night.

The weakness is the crowd. In the December–January peak, dozens of boats leave together at noon, so the first hour on the main channel feels like a slow procession, and boats anchor close to each other at night. If you want the canals without the queue, book for the first half of October or late February to mid-March, when the weather is still pleasant and the fleet is only half full.

Kumarakom: open lake, birds and resort comfort

Kumarakom is a cluster of islands and a village on the eastern bank of Vembanad Lake, about 15 km from Kottayam town. A houseboat here spends most of its time on open water, with a few inlets and village canals, and a stop at Pathiramanal island where migratory birds rest. The sunset over the lake is the main event. If you have already done Alleppey once, Kumarakom is the version that feels new.

The village is better known for its lake resorts than for its boats. Big resort properties sit on the shore with pools facing the water, Ayurveda centres and buffet dining, and most couples and senior guests we plan for prefer a resort night here with a two- or three-hour private day cruise, rather than sleeping on the boat. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a 14-acre reserve on the lake bank, is open roughly 6 am to 6 pm with a small entry fee of about ₹50 per person (as of November 2026; confirm on arrival). The best months for migratory birds are November to February, which matches the main Gujarat travel season.

The trade-off is money and choice. Kumarakom has a limited houseboat fleet, mostly premium and luxury, so the cheapest private overnight boat costs more than a comparable boat in Alleppey, and resort rooms start where Alleppey's mid-range hotels end. Reaching it also takes about half an hour longer from Kochi airport.

Which one for your kind of trip

Honeymoon couples

If the houseboat night itself is the highlight, take a one-bedroom premium or luxury boat from Alleppey, and ask for a candle-light dinner on the upper deck. If privacy and a pool matter more than the cruise, a Kumarakom lake resort with a sunset day cruise is the better buy. Our Kovalam vs Varkala comparison covers the beach half of a Kerala honeymoon.

Families with children

Alleppey wins. Children enjoy the changing canal scenery, the duck farms and the village jetties far more than a wide lake, and a two- or three-bedroom boat keeps everyone together. All classified boats carry life jackets; still, keep children under five away from the open deck edges and prefer a boat with a railed upper deck. Our Kerala with kids guide has the rest of the family plan.

Parents and senior citizens

A houseboat has steps, a narrow gangway and a bathroom that moves with the water. For parents above 65, or anyone unsteady on their feet, book a Kumarakom resort and take a day cruise, or choose an Alleppey boat with a ground-floor bedroom and no upper deck. See our guide to travelling with senior parents for pacing and medical tips.

Joint families and friends' groups

Only Alleppey has enough three-, four- and five-bedroom boats to take a group of eight to twelve, and the per-head cost drops sharply on a bigger boat. Two boats cruising together is the usual arrangement for groups above twelve.

Food on board: pure veg and Jain

Every private houseboat has its own cook, and lunch, evening snacks, dinner and breakfast are cooked on the boat, so the menu is yours to fix. The default is a Kerala sadya-style spread with fish fry, which most Gujarati guests swap for a pure-veg menu: red rice or white rice, sambar, avial, thoran, pappadam, banana chips and payasam, with chapati on request. A Jain menu without onion, garlic, potato and other root vegetables is possible, but it must be written into the booking, because the cook buys provisions before you board at noon and cannot change the basket mid-cruise.

Three practical tips from the trips we plan: carry theplas, khakhra and a jar of pickle for the evening tea, as the snack is usually a banana fritter or a Kerala banana chip; ask for less coconut oil if the family is not used to it; and tell the operator about diabetes or low-spice needs in the same message as the Jain request. In Kumarakom resorts, buffet dinners carry a vegetarian counter, and the bigger properties will prepare Jain dishes with a day's notice.

Getting there from Ahmedabad

Fly to Kochi (Cochin International, COK). Non-stop flights from Ahmedabad take about 2 hours 35 minutes, and on a sample search for 18–23 December 2026, a return fare for two adults with checked bags started from about ₹47,000 on SpiceJet and IndiGo non-stop services (as of November 2026; fares change daily). From the airport, Alleppey is about 85 km (2 to 2.5 hours) and Kumarakom about 100 km (2.5 to 3 hours). A private cab for the transfer costs roughly ₹2,500–3,500 one way.

By train, several direct services run from Ahmedabad to Ernakulam in about 30 to 32 hours, including the Tirunelveli Humsafar Express and the Okha–Ernakulam Express; some trains continue down the coast to Alappuzha station, so check the route when you book. The train suits a slow family trip or a large group; for a four- to six-night holiday, the flight is the practical choice.

Timing matters for the houseboat day. Check-in is at noon and the boat anchors by about 5:30 pm, so you need to be at the jetty by 11:30 am. A morning flight from Ahmedabad lands too late for a same-day boarding; plan to arrive the previous evening and stay in Kochi or Alleppey town.

A 4-night plan that covers both

  • Day 1, Kochi: Evening flight from Ahmedabad, stay in Kochi. If you land by afternoon, see Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets and the Jew Town spice lanes.
  • Day 2, Alleppey houseboat: Drive to Alleppey by 11:30 am, board at noon. Lunch on board while crossing Punnamada Lake, canal cruise through Kuttanad, anchor by 5:30 pm, dinner on the deck.
  • Day 3, Kumarakom resort: Short morning cruise, check-out at 9 am, drive about an hour to Kumarakom. Afternoon by the pool, sunset day cruise or a canoe ride into the village canals.
  • Day 4, Kumarakom: Early visit to the bird sanctuary (best before 9 am), Ayurveda massage, lake-view lunch. Evening drive to Kochi, or add Munnar.
  • Day 5, Kochi: Fly home, or extend with 2 nights in Munnar for the tea-estate half of the trip.

A Munnar + Alleppey houseboat + Kumarakom resort itinerary over 5 to 6 nights is the most common Kerala trip we build for families from Gujarat; the Kerala tour packages page lists the current itineraries and price bands, and the Kerala trip cost guide breaks down the full budget with flights.

Five booking checks before you pay

Book only a Kerala Tourism-classified boat and ask for the classification category in writing, as the "deluxe" and "premium" labels are set by operators, not by a common standard. Confirm whether the boat is private or shared; shared boats are cheaper but you share the deck and the menu with strangers. Ask for the cruising hours and whether the boat anchors in a quiet spot or in the main cluster. Check the cancellation rule for monsoon alerts, when the authorities can suspend cruising on short notice. And carry mosquito repellent, a power bank and any medicines, because the boat moors away from shops for the night. Our travel insurance page explains cover for trip cancellations.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kumarakom better than Alleppey for a houseboat?

It depends on what you want. Alleppey has the classic canal scenery and the widest choice of boats at the lowest prices; Kumarakom has quieter open-lake cruising, birdwatching and luxury resorts, at a higher cost. First-time visitors and families usually prefer Alleppey; couples and seniors who want a resort night often prefer Kumarakom.

How much does an Alleppey houseboat cost per night in 2026?

As of November 2026, a private one-bedroom boat for two starts from about ₹7,000–10,000 (deluxe), ₹12,000–15,000 (premium) and ₹18,000–25,000 or more (luxury), with all meals. Two-bedroom boats for four start around ₹14,000 deluxe and ₹20,000 premium. Rates rise 20–50 percent in peak weeks and can double over Christmas–New Year.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Standard overnight cruises check in at 12 noon and check out at 9 am the next morning. Boats stop cruising and anchor by about 5:30 pm under state rules. Day cruises run roughly 11 am to 5 pm.

Can we get Jain food on a Kerala houseboat?

Yes, on private boats, provided it is confirmed in writing before travel. The cook prepares all meals on board and buys provisions before boarding, so a Jain or pure-veg request made at the jetty cannot be met.

Can we do both Alleppey and Kumarakom in one trip?

Easily. They are about 16 km apart. The usual pattern is one night on an Alleppey houseboat followed by one night in a Kumarakom lake resort, or a Kumarakom-to-Alleppey one-way cruise that some operators run.

Which is the best month for a houseboat from Ahmedabad?

October to February has the pleasant weather and the migratory birds, with late December the most expensive. Early October and late February to mid-March give the same weather with fewer boats. June to September is the monsoon: cheaper and green, but cruising can be suspended on heavy-rain days.
