Visa needed?
Yes, a short-stay visa is required before travel. Romania has been a full member of the Schengen area since 1 January 2025.
How to apply
Fill the application on Romania's official eVisa portal (evisa.mae.ro), upload the documents, then appear in person at the Romanian mission.
Visa fee
The common EU short-stay fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12; the Romanian Embassy confirms the amount payable. Not refunded if refused.
Processing time
Under EU rules a decision is normally made within 15 days, extendable up to 45 days. Romania advises applying at least 2 weeks before travel.
Stay allowed
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period; entry and exit days both count.
Validity
Decided by the embassy for each application.
Passport
Issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months after your planned exit, with at least 2 blank pages.
Where to apply in India
Consular Section of the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi, which covers all of India. No appointment; first come, first served (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 10:00-12:00, Wed 13:30-15:30).

Documents usually needed

  • Completed and signed application form (eVisa)
  • Two recent colour photos, 3 x 4 cm
  • Passport issued within 10 years, valid 3 months beyond your exit, with 2 blank pages
  • Documents showing the purpose of the trip, accommodation and return
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of funds of EUR 50 per day, at least EUR 500
  • Travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000
  • Documents translated into Romanian or English by an authorised translator

How to apply

  1. Create your application on evisa.mae.ro, between 3 months and 2 weeks before travel.
  2. Upload the supporting documents (PDF or image files, up to 2 MB each).
  3. Go in person to the Consular Section in New Delhi with the originals and copies; processing time is counted from this day.
  4. Receive the decision by email and collect your passport (Mon-Fri 12:00-12:30).

Important to know

Romania's foreign ministry says a valid Schengen visa with two or more entries, whose entries and days are not used up, also lets you enter and stay in Romania within the stay it allows.

Border police can refuse entry even with a visa if you cannot show you meet the entry conditions.

Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully working: fingerprints and a facial image are recorded at the Schengen border.

Apply to Romania only if it is your main destination (longest stay), or your first stop when stays are equal.
