Shimla vs Manali is the question we hear most from Ahmedabad families planning their first Himachal trip, and the honest answer is that they are two different holidays wearing the same "hill station" label. Shimla is a walkable heritage town two hours above Chandigarh, with a UNESCO toy train and snow that mostly arrives in January. Manali is a valley town four hours further north, with far better snow odds in December, Solang Valley for activities and the Atal Tunnel road to Sissu. This guide compares both on the things that actually decide the trip: how long you will sit in a car, when snow really falls, what the activities cost in rupees, who each place suits, and how to reach them from Ahmedabad. Facts are as of October 2026 and prices are indicative; they change with the date you travel.
Quick verdict: Shimla or Manali?
Pick Shimla if you have 3 nights or less, are travelling with parents over 65 or children under 5, want the toy train and colonial-era walks, and are happy with "maybe snow" rather than "snow for sure". Pick Manali if you have 4 nights or more, snow is the main reason for the trip, you want skiing, paragliding or a day at Sissu, or it is a honeymoon and you want a river-view room away from a crowded town centre. If you have 6 nights and the budget for the extra driving, doing both in one loop (Chandigarh → Shimla → Manali → Chandigarh) is the most common plan we book for Gujarat families, and it works well from mid-December to February.

Getting there from Ahmedabad: the part most guides skip
Both towns are reached through Chandigarh, and this is where the comparison starts. As of October 2026 IndiGo flies non-stop Ahmedabad–Chandigarh (6E 6506) departing 20:35 and landing 22:20, a 1 hour 45 minute hop. The return (6E 6395 at 09:30 or 6E 112 at 17:25) also runs daily. On Kiwi.com, a mid-December return for two adults with check-in bags showed fares from about ₹31,000 for both; prices vary by date. Because the outbound lands late, we book a hotel near the airport in Zirakpur for that night and start the hill drive after breakfast. Nobody should drive mountain roads at midnight in winter.
From Chandigarh the difference is stark. Shimla is 115 km and 3.5–4 hours on a good four-lane-then-two-lane road, so you reach your hotel by lunch on day 1. Manali is about 300 km through Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, and even with the new tunnels it takes 8–9 hours. That is a full travel day each way, which is why Manali needs 4 nights to feel like a holiday and Shimla can work in 3.
By train, the daily 19411 Gandhinagar Capital–Daulatpur Chowk Express leaves Gandhinagar at 10:00 and reaches Chandigarh at 07:31 the next morning (about 21.5 hours; sleeper from around ₹580, 3AC about ₹1,510, 2AC about ₹2,155 as of October 2026). It suits seniors and large families who prefer not to fly, and it arrives at the right time of day to continue to Shimla by road or by toy train from Kalka. There is no direct Ahmedabad flight to Kullu–Bhuntar airport, and Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport has very few flights, so Chandigarh remains the practical gateway for both.
Snow: when it really falls in each place
This is where most Gujarat families get disappointed, so let us be precise. Shimla town sits at about 2,200 m and, going by IMD climate normals, December delivers only about 7% of its annual snowfall, while January and February together deliver about 86%. The realistic snow window in Shimla is mid-January to mid-February. December 2024's early snowfall in Shimla was widely reported as the first in over two decades, which tells you how unusual it is. For snow around Shimla in December you drive up to Kufri (16 km) or, better, Narkanda (60 km, 2–2.5 hours), which holds snow longer because it is higher.
Manali is the opposite case. The town itself (about 2,050 m) gets irregular snow, but Solang Valley at 2,560 m usually has thin snow by Christmas and good cover from January, and Sissu at 3,100 m on the Lahaul side of the Atal Tunnel has snow from early December in most years. In January 2026 the Manali–Atal Tunnel–Lahaul road was fully blocked by heavy snow on 23 and 27 January, and The Tribune reported more than four feet of accumulated snow at Solang by 5 February 2026. That is wonderful for photos but it also means winter plans must keep one spare day, because the tunnel and the Solang road close for clearing after every big storm. Rohtang Pass is closed to tourists from roughly November to May and reopened only by mid-May in 2026, so do not book a December trip expecting Rohtang.
Our rule of thumb: for guaranteed-looking snow in the third week of December, Manali (via Solang or Sissu) beats Shimla clearly. For a late-January trip both work, and Shimla's Kufri–Narkanda belt becomes a serious option at lower cost. For a detailed odds table by week see our guide to snow places in India in December.
What you actually do in Shimla, with prices
Shimla's charm is that very little of it involves a car. You walk The Ridge and Mall Road, visit Christ Church and the Gaiety Theatre, and take the ropeway to Jakhu temple. The Jakhu ropeway lists a return ticket at ₹470 for adults and ₹400 for children aged 3–12 (plus GST), a 6–8 minute ride instead of a steep 40-minute climb, which matters if you are travelling with parents.
The Kalka–Shimla toy train is the one thing you should not skip. As of March 2026 fares, the Himalayan Queen (52455) leaves Kalka at 11:55 and takes about 5 hours, at ₹265 in chair car and ₹475 in first class; the Shivalik Deluxe (52451, 05:45) costs ₹595 in first class; the Him Darshan Vistadome is ₹630; and the ordinary Kalka Shimla Express (52453, 06:20) starts at ₹65 in second sitting. Coaches are unheated in winter, so carry a shawl. Book on IRCTC the day the 60-day window opens, because the Vistadome and Shivalik Deluxe sell out first. Our usual plan is toy train up and car down, which saves a day.
Kufri, 16 km away, is the standard half-day trip: Kufri Fun World charges around ₹250 entry (9:30–17:30) and horse and yak rides are negotiated on the spot. In a weak winter, Kufri's snow can be thin, which is why we steer snow-hungry families to Narkanda and Hatu Peak instead.
What you actually do in Manali, with prices
Manali days revolve around Solang Valley, 13 km north of town. In the snow season the practical skiing window runs late December to February. Short beginner ski sessions were advertised at roughly ₹575–₹850 per person in September 2026 and full-day lessons with equipment from about ₹2,999; renting skis and boots on your own runs about ₹500–₹1,000 and a snow suit ₹250–₹400 per day. Confirm what the quoted price includes (guide, gear, GST) before paying, because the session length is what decides value. Paragliding is a summer-and-autumn activity: short joy rides cost about ₹1,200–₹1,600 and medium flights ₹2,500–₹4,000, but in December–February the high flights mostly pause and only short rides run on clear days. Zorbing, snow scooters and the Solang ropeway are priced on the spot and change with the season.
The second must-do is the Atal Tunnel (9 km) to Sissu on the Lahaul side, about 40 km from Manali. It gives you the best snow in the region in December and the Chandra river valley views, but it is the first road to close after a storm, so keep it for a flexible day. In town, Hadimba temple, Vashisht hot springs and Old Manali's cafés fill the evenings. Non-Himachal taxis pay a green tax of ₹200 for a car, which is built into the rate if you book a private car through us.
Who should pick which
Honeymoon couples
Manali wins for most couples. The riverside and orchard-side hotels around Aleo, Prini and Naggar give you privacy, Solang gives you one "adventure day", and a December Sissu drive is as romantic as it gets in India. Shimla suits couples who prefer a heritage hotel, slow walks and cafés over snow activities, and it is the better choice if you only have a long weekend. Our honeymoon packages can be built either way with a private car, which removes the one thing couples hate: sharing a tempo traveller with strangers.
Families with young children
Shimla, without hesitation, if the youngest is under 5. The 3.5-hour drive from Chandigarh is manageable, the toy train is the highlight of the trip for children, and you are never far from your hotel. Manali's 8–9 hour drive with a toddler is tiring and a stomach-upset risk on the winding Mandi–Kullu stretch. With children aged 8 and above, Manali's snow and Solang activities become worth the drive. Compare it with our family holiday packages if you want a longer Himachal circuit.
Parents and seniors
Shimla is kinder to seniors on the road but not on foot: the town is built on steep slopes, and many Mall Road hotels involve stairs or an uphill walk from the nearest car drop. We pick hotels with lift access and a flat approach. Manali is flatter in the hotel belt but demands the long drive and colder nights; anyone with breathing or heart conditions should check with their doctor before a Sissu day at 3,100 m. For both, carry regular medicines, book travel insurance that covers trip cancellation (winter road closures are common), and keep the first day light.
Groups of friends and teens
Manali, for the activities, the café scene and the snow. Add a night at Jibhi or Kasol if you have 6–7 nights.
Veg and Jain food: what to expect
Both towns are easy for pure-veg travellers in the town centre. Shimla's Mall Road and Lower Bazaar have Punjabi and Gujarati-style veg restaurants and plenty of chana-kulcha, and Manali's Mall Road has a dense cluster of pure-veg and Jain-friendly restaurants that cater to Gujarati groups, so Jain food (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) is a hotel-kitchen request rather than a problem. The gap is on excursion days: Kufri, Solang and Sissu have only tea, Maggi and pakora stalls, and nothing Jain. We pack a thepla-khakhra box for those days and ask the hotel to send a packed lunch when needed. Mention Jain or Swaminarayan dietary needs when you book so the hotels are briefed in advance.
What it costs from Ahmedabad (indicative, as of October 2026)
Treat these as planning bands, not quotes. Flights Ahmedabad–Chandigarh return for two with bags: from about ₹31,000 in mid-December, more over Christmas–New Year. Private car from Chandigarh: a 3-night Shimla trip needs far fewer kilometres than a 4–5 night Manali trip, which is the main reason Shimla is cheaper per night. Hotels in both towns run from roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500 per night for clean budget rooms, ₹4,500–₹7,500 for good 3-star rooms with heating, and ₹9,000 and up for premium resorts, with sharp rises for 24 December to 2 January. Our live Himachal listings show a 5-night Shimla and Manali combination from about ₹18,000 per person excluding flights, and Manali-only trips from about ₹18,000–₹19,000 per person for 3–5 nights depending on hotel class; see the Manali tour packages from Ahmedabad page for the current price table, and our Himachal tour packages for longer circuits. If you want snow but a smaller budget, our Kashmir in December guide is the comparison to read next, since Srinagar has a direct-ish flight and Gulmarg has more reliable December snow.
Two sample plans
Shimla in 3 nights (ideal for seniors and young children)
Day 0: Evening IndiGo to Chandigarh, overnight near the airport. Day 1: Drive to Kalka (30 minutes), toy train to Shimla, evening on The Ridge and Mall Road. Day 2: Kufri or Narkanda for snow (Narkanda if it is January), Jakhu ropeway on return. Day 3: Slow morning, Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre, Lakkar Bazaar for wooden toys; optional Mashobra or Naldehra drive. Day 4: Drive to Chandigarh, afternoon flight home.
Manali in 4 nights (ideal for honeymooners and snow-chasers)
Day 0: Evening flight, overnight at Chandigarh. Day 1: Full-day drive to Manali via Mandi and Kullu with a lunch stop at a pure-veg dhaba. Day 2: Solang Valley morning (ski session or snow play), Hadimba temple and Mall Road evening. Day 3: Atal Tunnel to Sissu, back by late afternoon; this is your flexible snow day. Day 4: Naggar castle and Vashisht, café evening in Old Manali. Day 5: Drive to Chandigarh, late-afternoon flight home. Swap days 3 and 4 if the tunnel is closed.
For 6 nights, do Shimla (2 nights) then Manali (3 nights) with the 250–260 km, 7–8 hour drive between them on day 3, and keep the last night in Chandigarh so the flight is not at risk.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shimla or Manali better for snow in December?
Manali, through Solang Valley and Sissu. Shimla town gets only about 7% of its annual snow in December; its snow season really runs mid-January to mid-February, with Kufri and Narkanda more reliable than the town.
How far is Shimla from Manali?
About 250–260 km by road via Mandi and Kullu, which takes 7–8 hours with stops. It is a full travel day, so plan it as one.
Can we do Shimla and Manali together in 5 days from Ahmedabad?
Only if you accept three long drives in five days. We recommend 6 nights for both, or choose one: 3 nights for Shimla, 4 nights for Manali.
Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Shimla or Manali?
No. As of October 2026 the practical route is IndiGo's daily non-stop Ahmedabad–Chandigarh flight, then road. Kullu–Bhuntar has no Ahmedabad flights and Shimla's airport has very few flights of any kind.
Which is cheaper, Shimla or Manali?
Shimla, for the same hotel class, because it needs fewer nights and far fewer car kilometres from Chandigarh. Hotel rates themselves are similar in both towns.
Is Jain food available in Shimla and Manali?
Yes in both town centres and at hotels on request. On excursion days to Kufri, Solang or Sissu, carry your own snacks because only tea and Maggi stalls operate there.
