Mauritius vs Maldives for honeymoon is the question we hear most often at our C G Road office between October and February, when most Gujarati weddings happen. Both islands are visa-free for Indian passports, both have turquoise water, and both show up in every honeymoon brochure. Yet they are very different holidays, and the right answer depends on three things: your wedding month, how you like to spend a day, and how much of the budget you want to put into the room versus the flight. This guide compares the two from Ahmedabad with live fares, rupee costs, the weather calendar, veg and Jain food, honeymoon perks and entry rules, all as of November 2026. Prices are indicative and vary by date.
Mauritius vs Maldives at a glance
| What matters | Mauritius | Maldives |
|---|---|---|
| Flying from Ahmedabad | Overnight, one stop (Bengaluru or Mumbai), 12–15 hrs door to door | Daytime, one stop (Mumbai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru), 6–9 hrs |
| Best months | April–June and September–December; January–March is cyclone season | November–April (dry); May–October is the monsoon and the deal season |
| Entry for Indians | Visa-free up to 60 days; online All-in-One Travel Digital Form before you fly | Free 30-day visa on arrival; IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours of the flight |
| 5-night cost per couple incl. flights | ₹2.2–3.2 lakh in a 4★ beach resort on half board with island tours | ₹2.4–3.6 lakh in a 4★ beach villa; ₹4–6 lakh in a 5★ water villa |
| Style of trip | One island, many places: waterfalls, temples, markets, catamaran days, a hired car | One resort island, nothing to “see”; the villa, the lagoon and the spa are the trip |
| Veg and Jain food | Easy: Indian-origin population, dal puri on the street, Indian restaurants in Grand Baie and Flic-en-Flac | Depends on the resort; pick one with an Indian chef and tell them in advance |
| Hidden costs | Few; the flight is the expensive part | Speedboat or seaplane transfer, US$12 green tax per person per night, US$100 departure fees per person, 17% GST on extras |
Flights from Ahmedabad: the first real difference
This is where the two islands separate before you have packed a bag. We ran a live search on Kiwi.com on 4 November 2026 for two adults with checked bags, travelling 20–25/26 January 2027, which is peak honeymoon season.
Maldives: the cheapest return was about ₹85,500 for two people, flying SpiceJet SG655 Ahmedabad–Mumbai at 07:00 and IndiGo 6E1141 Mumbai–Malé at 14:00, landing at 16:05 the same afternoon; back on IndiGo 6E1132 Malé–Mumbai at 09:15 with an Ahmedabad arrival at 17:00. IndiGo via Hyderabad (6E383 at 11:30, 6E1137 landing 17:25) was about ₹87,300. Either way you leave home after breakfast and are in your villa before sunset. Booked 6–8 weeks ahead outside the festive weeks, ₹20,000–32,000 per person return is a realistic planning band.
Mauritius: the cheapest return was about ₹1,51,900 for two, on Akasa QP1905 Ahmedabad–Bengaluru at 18:45 connecting to IndiGo 6E1861 at 04:05, landing in Mauritius at 08:30; the return 6E1862 leaves Mauritius at 09:30 and you are in Ahmedabad at 21:10 via Bengaluru. Air India via Mumbai (AI2494 at 21:00, AI2241 departing 02:00 and landing 06:55) was about ₹1,64,000. The Bengaluru–Mauritius leg alone is nearly six hours, and both options mean a night spent in an airport and a plane. Outside peak, ₹55,000–75,000 per person is the usual band.
So the flight to Mauritius costs roughly ₹30,000–65,000 more per couple and takes twice as long. Remember that when you compare resort prices: Mauritius looks cheaper on the hotel voucher, and the flight claws part of that back. Fares change daily; treat these as a planning range.
The weather calendar decides more than the brochure does
Most couples we plan for marry between November and February, and this is the single most important section for them. The two islands have opposite seasons.
The Maldives is at its best from November to April: the dry north-east monsoon, flat lagoons, 28–31°C and the clearest water of the year. That is exactly the Gujarati wedding season, which is why Maldives honeymoons in December and January look so good in photos. The price is that December–February is also the most expensive window, with festive-week surcharges and minimum stays over Christmas and New Year.
Mauritius runs the other way. It sits in the southern hemisphere, so December–March is its hot, humid summer and January to March is the official cyclone season; February is usually the wettest month. Resorts stay open and many weeks are fine, but a cyclone warning can keep you inside for two or three days, and that is a real risk on a six-night honeymoon. The sweet spots are April–June and September–November: 22–28°C, calm seas, low rain and no cyclone risk. July and August are cooler (16–23°C) and breezy on the east coast, which suits sightseeing more than swimming.
| If you marry in… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| November–December | Either; Maldives if you want guaranteed sun | Maldives is in peak dry season; Mauritius is warm with short showers and the cyclone risk is still low |
| January–March | Maldives | Mauritius cyclone season; February is its wettest month |
| April | Either | Maldives still dry and hot; Mauritius turning pleasant with prices easing |
| May–June | Mauritius | Mauritius’s best honeymoon weather; the Maldives monsoon starts, though resort deals are good if you accept showers |
| July–August | Mauritius, west or north coast | Cool and dry in Mauritius; mid-monsoon in the Maldives |
| September–October | Mauritius, or Maldives on a budget | Mauritius calm and warming; Maldives rates are low and the sea usually brighter than in June |
What the money buys: a 5-night cost comparison in rupees
These are the bands we quote for a couple from Ahmedabad for five nights, including flights, as of November 2026. All figures are indicative; the exact number depends on date, resort and how early you book.
| Cost head (5 nights, 2 people) | Mauritius – 4★ beach resort | Maldives – 4★ beach villa |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights from Ahmedabad | ₹1,10,000–1,55,000 | ₹45,000–95,000 |
| Stay with meals | ₹90,000–1,40,000 (half board, airport transfers, north and south island tours, a catamaran day) | ₹1,70,000–2,40,000 (half board, speedboat transfer) |
| Entry paperwork | ₹0 (visa-free; free online form) | ₹0 (free visa on arrival; free IMUGA) |
| Government fees outside the package | None charged separately | About ₹9,500 per person: US$100 departure tax + airport fee in economy; green tax US$12 per person per night is usually billed by the resort |
| Extras: dinners outside the plan, spa, excursions | ₹20,000–35,000 (a restaurant dinner for two is ₹2,500–4,000; Chamarel entry about ₹1,600 each) | ₹30,000–60,000 (resort prices are in dollars plus 17% GST and service) |
| Typical all-in total | ₹2.2–3.2 lakh | ₹2.4–3.6 lakh |
Two things stand out. First, the totals end up closer than most couples expect: Mauritius spends on the flight, the Maldives spends on the resort. Second, the Maldives has a ceiling Mauritius does not. A 5★ water villa with a pool, seaplane transfer and full board is ₹4–6 lakh for five nights, and once you are there, every coffee, every excursion and every spa hour is priced in dollars at about ₹95 to the dollar plus tax. In Mauritius a 3★ half-board stay brings the whole trip down to about ₹1.7–2.3 lakh, and a tasty dinner in Grand Baie costs what it would in Ahmedabad’s better restaurants. Our forex desk can load a card in US dollars or euros before you leave either way.
How a day actually feels on each island
If you want the honeymoon where nothing is scheduled, the Maldives wins without a contest. Your resort is the whole island; a lap around it takes ten minutes. The day is the villa deck, the house reef, a sunset cruise, a couples’ spa hour and dinner. There is no sightseeing to feel guilty about missing, and no traffic. After day three some couples get restless, which is why we usually suggest four or five nights rather than seven, or a split stay with two nights on a local island such as Maafushi before the resort.
Mauritius is an island with roads, towns and a history that will feel oddly familiar. Roughly two-thirds of the population traces its roots to India, Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely understood, and the sacred lake at Ganga Talao has a Shiva temple that pilgrims walk to on Maha Shivaratri. In six nights you can see Chamarel’s seven-coloured earth and waterfall, the Black River Gorges viewpoints, Port Louis market, the Pamplemousses garden and the red-roofed church at Cap Malheureux, spend a day on a catamaran to Ile aux Cerfs, and still have two full beach days. Couples who would be bored by a single resort should choose Mauritius; couples who want to switch off completely should choose the Maldives. Our day-by-day Mauritius 7-day honeymoon itinerary shows how those days fit together.
Veg and Jain food: the honest comparison
For most Gujarati couples this is the deciding factor after the budget, so here is the practical reality.
Mauritius is the easiest long-haul destination we sell for vegetarians. Dal puri and gateau piment are street food, every supermarket sells Indian spices and pickles, and the north (Grand Baie) and west (Flic-en-Flac) have Indian restaurants a short taxi from the resorts. Resort buffets on half board include dal, rice, vegetable curries and salads every night. Pure Jain food, without onion, garlic and root vegetables, is not standard, so we send the request to the resort kitchen in writing before you travel and confirm it again at check-in; in our experience the 4★ and 5★ properties handle it well with a day’s notice.
In the Maldives everything you eat comes from your resort, so the resort choice is the food choice. Larger 4★ and 5★ resorts that host many Indian guests keep an Indian chef, a dedicated vegetarian section at the buffet and can prepare Jain meals if told in advance; smaller boutique islands may offer little beyond pasta, salads and grilled vegetables. Local islands have Maldivian cafés where veg options are thin. Two rules keep couples happy: book half board or full board at a resort known for Indian guests, and carry theplas, khakhra and dry snacks for the villa, which is allowed. Our Maldives honeymoon packing list covers what you can and cannot bring in.
Honeymoon perks: carry the marriage certificate
Both islands reward honeymooners, but only if you prove it. In Mauritius the big resort groups run standing honeymoon offers: as of November 2026, Beachcomber’s offer gives 30% off the room and meal plan, daily lunch for half-board guests, sparkling wine and a couples’ experience on stays of four nights or more, for weddings within the last 12 months, and the certificate must be shown at check-in. Maldives resorts work the same way; Anantara’s honeymoon offers, for example, ask for proof of marriage within the last year and add an in-villa setup, champagne and chocolates on a four-night minimum. Terms differ by resort and change each season, so we check the current one when we quote. The practical tip is simple: carry the marriage registration certificate, not just the wedding card, and tell us the wedding date when you enquire so we can book under the honeymoon rate.
Entry rules for Indian passports (as of November 2026)
Mauritius: Indian passport holders are stamped in visa-free for tourism, for up to 60 days, with a passport valid for six months, a confirmed hotel booking, a return ticket and proof of funds. Before you fly, you complete the free All-in-One Travel Digital Form on the Mauritian government portal, which combines the immigration, customs and health declaration and gives you a QR code; airlines may ask to see it at check-in. Travel insurance is recommended, not mandatory.
Maldives: Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a six-month-valid passport, a confirmed resort booking and a return ticket. Each traveller submits the free IMUGA traveller declaration online within 96 hours of the flight; filing earlier than 96 hours makes it invalid, and the departure declaration was discontinued in August 2024. Only use the official imuga.immigration.gov.mv site; paid “assistance” sites are resellers.
Entry is always at the immigration officer’s discretion and rules change, so we confirm the current requirement for your dates and fill the forms with you before departure. A short travel insurance policy is worth it for both: it covers the cyclone-delay risk in Mauritius and the medical-evacuation cost in the Maldives, where the nearest hospital is a boat ride away.
Two sample 5-night honeymoons
Maldives, 5 nights, 4★ resort by speedboat
Day 1: morning flight from Ahmedabad via Mumbai, speedboat from Malé, sunset on the beach. Day 2: house-reef snorkelling, couples’ spa. Day 3: sandbank picnic or dolphin cruise. Day 4: a free day, with a floating breakfast if the resort offers one. Day 5: sunset fishing or a private beach dinner. Day 6: morning speedboat back for the 09:15 Malé departure, home by evening.
Mauritius, 5 nights, 4★ west-coast resort
Day 1: overnight flight, land at 08:30, rest and beach. Day 2: south tour of Chamarel, Black River Gorges and Ganga Talao. Day 3: catamaran day to Ile aux Cerfs with a veg lunch arranged. Day 4: north tour of Port Louis, Pamplemousses and Cap Malheureux. Day 5: free day on the beach, Le Morne sunset. Day 6: morning departure, home at night. Packages for both are on our Mauritius tour packages and Maldives tour packages pages, with current price grids.
Who should pick which
| If you… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want the overwater villa and total privacy | Maldives | Mauritius resorts are beachfront; the overwater villa is a Maldives thing |
| Get restless after two days at a pool | Mauritius | Waterfalls, temples, markets, a catamaran, a hired car |
| Are strict Jain and nervous about food | Mauritius, or a large Maldives resort | Indian food is everywhere in Mauritius; in the Maldives the resort must be chosen for it |
| Dislike night flights or have only 5 days off | Maldives | Daytime flights, in the villa by sunset, four nights is enough |
| Have a budget under ₹2 lakh for everything | Mauritius 3★, or a Maldives local-island split | Both fit; a full Maldives resort stay does not |
| Want parents to approve the photos and the food | Mauritius | Temples, a familiar culture and dal puri reassure everyone at home |
Our verdict
For a wedding in the Gujarati peak season, December to February, the Maldives is the safer honeymoon: it is in its best weather, the flights are short and daytime, and four or five nights in a beach villa with half board comes to ₹2.4–3.6 lakh for two. For a wedding from April to June or in October, or for a couple who wants to see and do things rather than only rest, Mauritius gives a longer, fuller holiday for ₹2.2–3.2 lakh, with the easiest vegetarian food of any long-haul island. If the budget stretches to the Maldives water villa, nothing else gives that photograph; if it does not, Mauritius at 4★ feels more luxurious than the Maldives at 3★. Couples still torn between a resort-only trip and a touring trip may find our Maldives vs Bali honeymoon comparison useful too, and every option sits on our honeymoon packages page.
FAQs: Mauritius or Maldives for honeymoon
Which is cheaper for a honeymoon from Ahmedabad, Mauritius or Maldives?
At the same hotel grade the totals are close: about ₹2.2–3.2 lakh per couple for five nights in a 4★ Mauritius resort against ₹2.4–3.6 lakh in a 4★ Maldives beach villa, including flights, as of November 2026. Mauritius has the cheaper floor (3★ half board brings it to about ₹1.7–2.3 lakh); the Maldives has the higher ceiling (5★ water villas at ₹4–6 lakh).
Is January a good time for a Mauritius honeymoon?
It is the start of cyclone season, hot and humid with the highest rainfall of the year in January–March. Many January weeks are fine, but if your dates are fixed in that window the Maldives is the lower-risk choice. For Mauritius, aim for April–June or September–December.
Do Indians need a visa for Mauritius or the Maldives?
No visa in advance for either, as of November 2026. Mauritius stamps Indian tourists in visa-free for up to 60 days after you file the online All-in-One Travel Digital Form; the Maldives gives a free 30-day visa on arrival after the IMUGA declaration filed within 96 hours of your flight. Entry remains at the officer’s discretion.
How many nights are enough?
Four to five nights in the Maldives; five to six in Mauritius, because the overnight flight eats a day and there is more to see. Seven nights in the Maldives is only worth it at a resort with several restaurants and activities, or as a split stay.
Which is better for pure veg or Jain couples?
Mauritius, clearly: Indian food is part of the local cuisine and resorts handle veg requests daily. In the Maldives choose a larger resort with an Indian chef and inform them in writing before arrival; we do this as part of the booking.
Can we combine Mauritius and Maldives in one trip?
There is no direct flight between them and the connection runs back through India or Sri Lanka, so a combination costs a day and a second long-haul fare. A more practical pairing is Dubai with Mauritius (8–9 nights) or Sri Lanka with the Maldives, both of which we plan regularly.
