Paro
Paro is a valley town in Bhutan, west of the capital, Thimphu. It is the site of the country’s only international airport and is also known for the many sacred sites in the area. North of town, the Taktsang Palphug (Tiger’s Nest) monastery clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley. Northwest of here are the remains of a defensive fortress, Drukgyel Dzong, dating from the 17th century.

Hereafter, you move on to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong. This used to be a Buddhist monastery of which only ruins remain today. This place was constructed during the years 1644-1649 to symbolize the victory of Bhutan over Tibetan-Mongol armies. If you are lucky to visit the place on a cloudless day then you will be able to view Bhutan’s holy peak, Mt. Jumolhari.
Enjoy your breakfast and embark on the trek to the Tiger’s Nest. Trekking to the site takes around 2 hours. This sacred Buddhist site is also called Paro Taktsang or Takhtsang Goemba. The site is built around the cave where Guru Rinpoche flew to on a tigress’ back and meditated here for 3 days. After a hatful of fun at this place, get back to your hotel and hit the sack to shed the weariness of the day.
After your breakfast, embark on the tour. The Chela La Pass is at an elevation of 3988 meters making this the highest motorable pass of Bhutan. This is about an hour’s drive through thickly-forested roads which in itself is an excellent botanical splendour. Mt Jumolhari, Jichu Drake and other adjoining peaks can be viewed from this pass.In the afternoon, enjoy a mesmerising drive to Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought invaders many centuries ago. Enroute to the Dzong, you can get an amazing view of the snowy dome of Chomolhari , the ‘mountain of goddess’.
