One of the most famous and historically significant temples of India is the Khajuraho of Madhya Pradesh. There are Hindu and Jain temples in this group which provide a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of ancient times.

Another very famous and religiously and historically significant temple in India is the Somnath Temple of Gujarat. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, It is believed that this was constructed by Soma or the Moon God, who was freed from a curse by Shiva. However, this was demolished and reconstructed several times, despite which it has always been a center for celebrating many religious festivals.

Shri Siddhivinayaka Temple of Maharashtra is a very famous in India dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Records state that this was built in 1801, serving to the religious pursuits of the residents and tourists. There is another temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, known as the Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati, near Mumbai where the former temple is located. The Mahaganapati Temple is also important from the perspective of history.

A very fascinating temple of India is the Amarnath Cave Temple in Jammu and Kashmir, where the idol of Lord Shiva is found in the form of a stalagmite formed of ice, which can be seen only after trekking through a challenging route that leads up to the shrine.

The Golden Temple of Amritsar is one more addition to the list of top most visited in India. This temple was built during the 16th century and was originally named as Harmandir Sahib. People started calling it as Golden Temple after a portion of it was damaged and later reconstructed with gold.

Other famous temples of India include Puri in Orissa, Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Gujarat, Parthasarathy Mandir in Tamil Nadu, Shreemadnant Mandir in Kerela, Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttar Pradesh and many more.
