Just about 80 kms from Srinagar is the beautiful valley of meadows called Sonamarg. Literally meaning meadows of gold. Would advise to travel as early as possible so that you miss the traffic and have more hours in your hand to spend in Sonmarg and if you reach early you might also go to Zozilla Pass and come back. It is worth the 3 to 4 hrs you will be spending The taxi that you would be taking to Sonmarg would not be allowed to show you around the place. You will have to either hire mules or take a local taxi.If you take the mules they will take you towards the Tajiwas glacier and not show you around other places whereas if you take the taxi they will take you towards Baltal, Fish point and then the last point which is towards the glacier. Be ready to bargain hard. If you travel between Aug to Nov don't expect to see any snow except of the glacier and that too from quite a distance. Baltal is what I would call an offspring from the marriage of Kasmir & Ladakh. You will get to see lush greenery fading into stark rocky mountains. There is confluence of river coming from Tiger Hill and the one coming from the Amarnath Cave. Your driver/guide might tell you lots of stories on Tiger Hill and show you the spots from a distance but I am not too sure how much is to be believed.
The locals say the best time to visit is around April and I would like to take their word and surely visit this place once again in April
